It was a cold November morning when Donnie walked down to the quidditch pitch carrying his broomstick. He was wrapped up rather warmly with a Ravenclaw scarf on, his cloak and a nice woollen jumper. It was good to keep warm after all. Especially as he would be practicing his flying. If it was cold down on the ground then it would be even colder up in the skies.
The 13 year old boy stood in the middle of the pitch and looked up into the sky. It was a rather clear, although a bit windy. Still he should be able to practice his flying okay. The youngster wanted to keep up on his flying skills especially as he wanted to be Ravenclaw seeker. If he was going to be as effective as he can be in the matches and win the games for his house then he had to be on top form.
Donald did not have a fancy broom, in fact it was a rather old broom but it did the job well enough and it could still keep up with some of the top notch brooms about. Besides the felt that it was more about the person flying the broom than it was about the broom itself. After all flying was a skill and surely the best pilot could make the worst broom look like one of the best. At least that it what the working class boy told himself. His family couldn’t really afford a better broom after all.
The Welsh wizard placed the broom upon the floor and commanded ”UP” and his broom shot up into his waiting hand. He mounted his broomstick and kicked up rising higher and higher up into the air. He hovered for a bit as he looked down at the ground below. He was quiet high up into the air. But he felt very confidence in the air so it didn’t really bother him that much.
He flew in the air, diving quickly and pulling up just as fast, doing swerves and loops and u-turns. Don tried to do some more interesting stuff like barrel rolls but he couldn’t quiet pull it off. The tricks were kind of difficult to do. It didn’t matter too much though the Ravenclaw was enjoying flying anyway. This was just was just as much about him having fun flying as it was him developing his flying skills.
The pale skinned boy hovered up further up in the air and did a few more loops and turns. He was a very adept flier. He decided to practice some evasive manoeuvres. The young Ravenclaw students practice his swirls, twirls, hard turns and quick breaks. As if he was trying to avoid a bludger. Decided to be a bit more risky the Ravenclaw student decided to try to do a sloth grip roll It was a very dangerous thing to do and he knew it was risky but he felt like trying something more perilous. He leaned across his broom and attempted to roll down like a sloth and dangle upside down. However all the young lad managed to achieve was pulling himself very sharply to the right. Maybe that was out of his skill set for the time being. Maybe.

The actual Quidditch season couldn't come soon enough, as far as she was concerned. After months of very little broom flying during the summer holiday her skills were rusty at best. It was hard for a muggleborn to sneak away somewhere to kick off into the sky, even harder when they were slaving away in the mother's flower shop for enough coin to buy their very own brand new broom. It was a Nimbus, not quite as good as the newest Firebolt model but a big step up from the old cleansweep someone'd passed down to her in her second year. Even after two months back the Gryffindor didn't feel quite on top of her game and headed out to the Quidditch pitch with a quaffle tucked under her arm, armed with her wand.
As a Keeper, her skill didn't lay in actual broom handling so much but her evasive skills and sometimes... pure blind luck. She wouldn't deny it, some of the more desperate saves were nothing more than a bit of prayer and a bit of bold nerve. When she made it out to the pitch she stood on the grassy field, brown eyes skyward. Someone had beat her to it this morning, a small boy was already up in the sky. Ravenclaw, if she remembered him correctly. Jasmine set down her broom and watch him as he tried his hand at some chaser moves, her hands propped on her hips.
"Wicked!" she encouraged as the Eagle looped and rolled through the air. Whatever the last move was, though, he didn't quite get it and instead jerked off to the side. No matter, Rome wasn't built in a day or something. The Gryffindor keeper picked her belongings up again, throwing her leg over the broom to mount it before she kicked off and rose rapidly through the air, calling to the boy "Oi! You! Wanna practice your aim?" Originally her plan had been to enchant the quaffle to float on it's own but when there was a chaser...either an actual chaser or a hopeful there, why not practice together?
It was pure bliss up on the broom, the wind blew through her unruly curls and whipped around her gangly frame which chilled her to the bone in the very best way. "Soooo?" The Gryffindor hovered, passing her quaffle between her own hands. A brow quirked up questioningly as she tried to entice the kid to play with her. "How bout it? I'm the best Keeper's Gryffindor's had since Ron Weasley, let's see what you've got!" As rusty as she felt, there was certainly no lack of confidence from her.

Donald was startled by the shout of ‘wicked’ from below that he almost but not quiet fell off his broom. He looked around to see who was shouting words of encouragement. It was a girl’s voice that is for sure but he didn’t recognise it. It certainly wasn’t a girl that he knew. He watched as an older girl, a Gryffindor who was about a 6th year, flew up and joined him in the air. The young lad greeted the Gryffindor girl with a small smile. From the encouragement that the older lass had given him he was pretty sure she had not come up to tell him to bog off. Don flew over towards the girl as she called over to him. Her challenge for him to practice his aim was somewhat intriguing but he did doubt himself slightly. ”Well...” he said to the young lady in his lilting accent ”...I am really trying to become a Seeker rather than a chaser” he said with a small shrug. Still it was a tempting offer. He watched as the passed the quaffle between her own hands. He ridged his eyerows at the Gryffindor’s boast that she was the best keeper since Ron Weasley. ”I know Gryffindors are all boastful showoffs but that is quiet a claim...” he said to the older student with a raised eyebrow. The 3rd year considering asking a comment about her only being a girl but thought better of it. He knew only too well the trouble that sexist comments like that could get him into. Even if they were only said in jest. The Ravenclaw boy knew that it would not end well for him. ”As I said I am trying to be a seeker for Ravenclaw....but I can certainly try....” he said with another slight smile. ”....chaser is the secondary position I am after.” he added as he lifted his hands to be passed the quaffle. The 13 year old was not entirely confident as a chaser but he it might be fun at the very least to play with someone. Even if he was not entirely sure that he would be able to give her the challenge she seemed to crave. ”I am Donald, by the way, Donald Westwood...” ((OOC: Jasmine Watson sorry it is a slow response. She startled the kid, having been pretty quiet while observing 'til she decided to shout her enthusiasm at him. Ah well, he managed to keep on his broom and that was the important part. A wide grin was plastered across the Lion's face, it was hard not to smile when one was in the air even if it was cold, made colder by the thin atmosphere and wind. Before Quidditch, she didn't really care for the cold but now she thrived on the wind's frigid bite.
"S'always good to have a back up plan!" The Lion paused her tossing to spin the quaffle on the tip of her finger, although it wobbled and tipped from her finger and she caught it again. Nothing felt better than handling the Quaffle, it felt like home. "I wanted to be a Beater originally, didn't work out. The spots were all full. I think I'd like smacking things around." Jas caught the quaffle in one hand and swung her free arm as if swinging an imaginary bat. "But Keepings good too." She shrugged her shoulders, resuming passing her quaffle from hand to hand. "Those looked like Chaser moves. You were trying a sloth grip roll, weren't you? I think the key to that is shifting your weight correctly but I dunno." Keeper moves were a bit different, it was a 'throw yourself at the quaffle in hopes of blocking it' sort of method
She scoffed at being called a boastful show off. "S'not boasting if it's true, then it's just telling facts. We can't help it that we're better than all the other teams." Gryffindor pride and all, but they were pretty good. "Besides, showing off is more fun than having your nose to a book." He agreed to practice with her and she grinned "Wicked! Here you go. I'm going to throw you the quaffle and I know it's a foreign concept to the Ravenclaw quidditch players but you're s'posed to catch it, alright?" The smile on her face took on a note of cheeky smugness before she gave it an underhanded lob. "I'm Jas."
After, she sped off towards the hoops, adding a happy loop into her flight path. Once at the goal posts she hovered in front of the middle on. The Gryffindor shook back her curls and tamed them into a loose ponytail, tied back with a hair elastic from her wrist before getting into position. She was tense and ready, a lioness ready to pounce on her prey. This prey just happened to be the quaffle.

Don nodded at Jasmine Watson when he said it was always good at have a back plan. ”Only a fool would not have one.” he said in agreement with the Lion. He loved quidditch and flying so much that the idea of not being on the Ravenclaw team was upsetting for the 13 year old. While he still supposed he could fly recreationally he would still be disappointed for not being on the quidditch team. He watched the girl as she spun the quaffle on top of her finger. Despite it wobbling slightly it was still an impressive feat for anyone to do and the third year looked suitably impressed. Donald sized up Jasmine as she said that she wanted to a beater. The 6th year didn’t look like the type but then again he supposed that there was not really a type. Still he made a bit of a mental note when she said that she liked smacking things around. Perhaps it would be certainly safer not to try and wind this girl up too much. The Welsh wizard smiled sheepishly when she asked if he was trying to do the sloth grip roll and explained to him how to do it. ”The sloth grip roll can be quiet useful for avoiding blugers, so it is a good move to know as a seeker as well. Given that seekers get targeted a fair bit as well. But it is a difficult move to master.” he said again seeming rather sheepish towards the end. It was Donnie’s turn to scoff when Jas said that Gryffindor were better than all the other teams ”You are right, thinking Gryffindor is the best team in the school is not boasting. It id delusional” he said to the sixth year playfully. He hoped that it would be taken for the banter that it was intended to be. ”Besides, my noses it not in a book now.” he added rather matter-of-factly. As the Gryffindor said it was a foreign concept for Ravenclaw players to catch the ball Donald did let out a little chuckle. He supposed that he did deserve that comment. However he did make a mental note to make sure he didn’t drop the quaffle when it was tossed to him. It seemed like it would be cruel fate for him to actually miss the quaffle after that remark. As it happens, and much to his relief, he managed to catch the quaffle. ”Hey Jas” he said, now tossing the quaffle between his own hands. His eyes narrowed as he concentrated. The pale skinned boy flew in for the kill before taking aim of his target, the hoop, a releasing the ball.

Ravenclaws were an odd bunch, weren't they? A touch on the arrogant side, not that there was necessarily anything wrong with that. Jasmine had her own arrogance about her, mostly when it came to Quidditch and things like house pride. It spoke to her competitive nature, one didn't compete because they thought they had little to offer in the way of skills and/or competition. "The best way to avoid being hit by a bludger is to catch the snitch, obviously." she said, the corners of her mouth cocked into a bit of a grin. "That's Gryffindor's method, anyway. Seems to work pretty well for us."
Delusional? The gangly sixth year quirked up an eyebrow, the ghost of a smile still visible on her face. "You wish. Alright, tough guy. Let's put your galleons where your mouth is." If Ravenclaw was so good, surely it meant that the boy would be able to best him in a little quidditch practice, eh? Whatever she had to do, she wasn't going to let one single shot slip by her. Jas was built to be a keeper, she was thin and light which made maneuvering easier while her awkwardly long limbs were perfect for giving her a little extra each to defend her precious hoops with. Normally her long frame frustrated her, she didn't feel comfortable in her own skin. "A rare treat for you then, eh? Not fretting over falling behind in your studies?"
Jasmine was truly at home in front of the hoops. She was comfortable, as if there was nothing more natural than sitting on a broomstick. Jas sat dead center between the three, hovering in place instead of circling. She observed the boy as he got ready to throw, following his line of sight. Her muscles tensed up in anticipation and when he finally threw it she dove. The quaffle tried to sneak by, but she tipped the ball with her fingers, knocking it back from her rings.. barely. Just barely.

Donnie pulled a playful ‘yea, yea ‘ face when she said the best way to avoid being hit by a bludger is to catch the snitch and that the Gryffindor method. ”Well....you got to avoid the bludgers to get the snitch. You do know that seekers tend to get targeted a fair bit by the beaters. he said in a mock matter of fact tone before adding, in a more teasing manner ”...I know keeper is a relatively cushy position. I mean you don’t do all that much apart from hover in front of a few hoops.” he allowed himself a bit of a cheeky grin at the older lass.
The 13 year old chewed his lips when the girl challenged him to a 3 Galleons bet. That was a lot of money for the working class lad. Still to let the bet slip it would be very weak of him. ”How about 1 Galleon. It’s not that I am a coward......but 3 is a lot....” he said soundly very sheepish over this. He just hoped that the Gryffindor would accept his lower offer in good spirits and not tease him for being from a less well off background. He wasn’t chickening out but 1 was all he could afford, maybe 2 Galleons at a push. ”Also how will this work? Best of 5? So 5 saves or 5 scores?” it seemed like the most logical, and fair, way to him.
A tiny frown crept on his face when the 6th year teased him about not fretting over falling behind on his studies ”I like to keep on top of my studies so I am never behind” he said with a small shrug ”Besides quidditch is just as important” he stated as if it was a fact that everyone should know. In his view quidditch was life.
”Ooo...” he said as Jasmine made the save ”I was close but nice save there” the pale skinned boy retrieved the quaffle. ”But this one won’t be as easy” he added. Donald made the move for the right most hoop but right at the last second attempted a switch towards the centre hoop. He hoped that he would catch her off guard.
