Jihoon Oh |
Wandmaker's Apprentice / 21 years old, born May 5 / Halfblood / Male |
Single || Pansexual |
APPEARANCE
Played by Namjoon Kim (link)
DESCRIPTION: Jihoon is in possession of killer dimples, variably coloured hair, and a face which can be either baby-faced and innocent or a sudden revolution of sharp angles and sparkling eyes. Bearing glasses almost all the time - except when he's lost them again - his expression underneath is either a) absent-minded, b) killing you with a grin, or c) adorable. He walks quickly and with his shoulders straight, though his expression is often miles away, particularly when he's in one of his Moods. For someone who looks so outwardly self-possessed and attractive (see: dimples), he's actually a terrible flirt and a total dork. More on that below.
PERSONALITY
POSITIVE TRAITS:Genius wandmaker-in-training, excellent memory, large vocabulary and ability to quote poetry at will, super adorable, good bunny dad when he's not distracted, really good with his hands, has respect for people's talents and is of the opinion everyone has something they're good at, sweetheart deep down, open-minded and fair
NEGATIVE TRAITS:Distractable, awkward flirt, can be Very Intimidating when people irritate him, Cannot Cook to save his life, impressively good at angsting himself into existential circles, will forget to eat or sleep or pay social dues on occasion, can be grumpy and appear grouchy or unfriendly but really just needs love
LIKES:
DISLIKES:People who are impatient, cold drinks, not being wanted, the colour green for some unknown reason, forgetting his train of thought or being interrupted, people who tell him to get contacts or ask him how many fingers they are holding up.
HOBBIES:Taking care of his bunny, reading and studying really old poetry from both Europe and East Asia, being very expressive, intimidating people, gazing at cute people from afar and then using terrible pick up lines on them, being rejected for said terrible pick up lines, existential sulking, being fond of his cousin Jiyoung but not too fond because is that kid a nuisance sometimes, making coffee, forgetting to drink the coffee in a burst of inspiration, grumbling at cold coffee, indulging his sweet tooth, working out because he feels guilty, getting take out because he can't cook to save his life, secretly writing poetry and imagining new wands.
GENERAL PERSONALITY:Jihoon is an interesting personality. One might class him in the Distracted Genius group, wherein he neglects personal health and hygiene, social duties and all other niceties for pursuit of his craft (either poetry or wandmaking, either of which can consume him for hours on end). He's also rather gruff and blunt in person, particularly as he's grown, but that is how he shows he cares. He affects a persona that seems like he doesn't care about others and doesn't want to take care of people, but is actually kind of needy, and truly likes taking care of others. He will never admit this, particularly as social interactions with him are often awkward and halting as he tries to figure out exactly how to do this socializing thing. Really, Jihoon is quite the sweetheart. When in a good mood, he is known to quote long swathes of poetry, make bad jokes, flash an adorable, dimpled grin, and drape himself over the nearest people. He's really a sweet person behind the existentialist poetry, brilliant mind and gruff exterior - you just have to get to know him.

Character History: Jihoon's family has always been a close one. His mother and her sister married his father and his brother, and while each set only had one child, the six functioned as an extended family unit. Jihoon was born in Korea while his father was working in Britain. His mother, along with his aunt and uncle, were still living in Korea at the time. As the Choi girls were both witches, they managed quite nicely, using a mixture of household magic and business smarts to run their own family business. Eventually, the group decided to move to England, when Jihoon was about 2 years old. As Jiyoung was on the way, Jihoon and his mum moved first, and helped make England feel a bit more like home for when the other three arrived. Jihoon picked up English easily as he learned it from a young age, and he and his father helped the rest of them learn as they all settled into the community, both magical and non. As such, they missed the first Wizarding war entirely, though they were going to be a bit closer than they would have liked to the second.
The Choi sisters were both very talented at Charms, and as such, they grew a small magical/non magical general store in a quiet town a short distance from London. Jihoon and Jiyoung grew up together in and around this business, running around shelves and getting into trouble which Jihoon would invariably have to drag Jiyoung out of (and/or take the blame for). The two, just like their two sets of parents, got along very well, and looked after each other in their own way - AKA, Jihoon made sure Jiyoung was eating and not causing havoc on a sugar rush, and Jiyoung made sure Jihoon didn't just read all day. It was therefore a bit of a wrench when Jihoon headed off to Hogwarts first, the first in his family to go to that prestigious school - packed off on the train with a load of uncertainty, new books, and glasses a bit too big for his face.
However, he had a bit of solace - the wand in his hand. He'd wavered between it and a wand of Walnut, but the Hornbeam had felt just right - like it was humming some soothing melody to him, or reciting a line of old poetry that you had to work through to understand, but filled you with peace when it did. The old man who'd supervised his choosing had said knowingly that Jihoon had a knack with wands, and that if he listened just right, he might be able to hear them - and sure enough, Jihoon thought he could. It was comforting, and his wand was always tucked up his sleeve after that, nestled right near his pulse.
He was going to need the comfort. Jihoon was sorted into Ravenclaw, though he wasn't quite sure what that meant. The Sorting Hat assured him that he would fit in just nicely - wit and wisdom, creativity and curiosity - and so Jihoon took his place at the Ravenclaw table, feeling a bit like a fish out of water. However, he was adopted by a small study group into his first year, and somehow by 3rd year, amongst the chaos that Umbridge caused, was promoted to the head of the group, where he fit in nicely - and could keep an eye on Jiyoung, who arrived the year after to cause all the mischief Hogwarts could manage.
Being a couple years after the infamous Golden Trio, Jihoon managed not to be a) petrified, b) attacked by dementors, c) eaten by a dragon, or d) have any Death Eater encounters. The magical world seemed like it was a rather dangerous place - a far cry from the happy, insulated town they'd grown up in and its small community - and Jihoon worried about his Muggle dad and uncle constantly. He was very nearly not allowed to go in his fifth year, and almost didn't. However, one night lying in his room listening to his wand, Jihoon realized that if he didn't go, Death Eaters might come visiting their sleepy village, and that thought very nearly made him sick. So off he went. That year was terrible. He did his best to keep his head down and immersed in his studies, took a lot of bruises from older Slytherins and the Carrows for younger students, and the entire year culminated with his OWLs being thrown out the window in May, when Jihoon woke to hear shouts from the common room and padded down the stairs to find a Carrow hanging like an ugly seal from the ceiling. He wasn't old enough to fight, but he herded everyone he could out through Hogsmeade (especially 13 year old Jiyoung, who he had to forcibly remove from the Great Hall) and then sat nervously, hands twisting around his wand, for what seemed like years as the fighting went on.
When the dust settled, things were resolved - or as resolved as they would be, Jihoon figured. The Order went about cleaning up and Jihoon went about his studies, taking comfort from the fact that those, at least, didn't change. When he graduated, he went straight back to Ollivanders and became an apprentice. He'd had a knack in his school days for guessing what kind of wand his classmates had (his second least favourite phrase, after "how many fingers am I holding up," is "Joon, what's my wand made of?"), and, despite his OWLs being postponed, had good marks in every subject - no Hermione Granger, but still pretty smart. After the Ollivander relative who was now running the place looked at Jihoon's wand, he accepted him without question, and Jihoon started his long apprenticeship. Soon enough, he was being allowed to mostly finish entire wands, sequestered in the back of the shop for long hours without noticing what time it was.
In November 2002, under a year ago, Jihoon's hometown was attacked by Death Eaters. His mother and aunt were involved, as some of the few wizards living in the area... but a harsh curse to Sooyung's midsection left her legs useless. Though she is rather cheerful about the whole ordeal, particularly as not a single one of her chickens was harmed (nor the other residents of the town killed), Jihoon still feels guilty about it (though there was literally nothing he could have done) and is prone to the occasional fit of gloom. As a result, he's been poor (well, worse than usual) about writing his mother, and Jiyoung is feeling the effects of Jihoon's misplaced worry via constant hovering and nagging. About 8 months later, he seems to be cheering up, though there was a period of rather morose poetry that will never see the light of day.
