Hit witch / 25 years old, born November 3rd / halfblood / female |
single || heterosexual |
APPEARANCE
Played by Phoebe Tonkin (link)
DESCRIPTION:Alex tends to walk with just a hint of a swagger in her step. She knows she can handle herself, and it shows in her confident attitude. So does her inherent mistrust of people. She uses her words to keep people at a literal distance, wearing her blunt sarcasm like aloof armor. Nothing gets to her, at least not visibly. Her clothes tend to be nice but with a hint of an edge, the result of growing up in wealth and rebelling against the rules that came with it. Her posture too reflects a less refined air. Away from her stern grandfather, she prefers crossing her arms or leaning against walls or draping herself across chairs with one ankle propped up on the opposite knee. Anything to subtly convey her refusal to be her family’s creature. Even so, her lithe movements hint at the fighter beneath, ready to spring into action at any moment. The steel in her eyes and voice makes what make-up she does wear seem more like war paint than decoration. She also has a habit of flaunting the werewolf scars on her arm, scratches sustained when she was a child. In short, she comes across as a strange mixture of rebel and soldier. Which is precisely what she is.
PERSONALITY
POSITIVE TRAITS: talented at martial magic/hand-to-hand combat, driven (won’t stop until the task is done), independent, observant, skilled at tailing/tracking, highly intelligent, knows how to think like her opponent, never backs down from a fight, thick skinned, resilient, resourceful
NEGATIVE TRAITS: acts like she doesn’t care, ends justify the means, disrespectful of authority, doesn’t play well with others, reckless, anger issues, holds grudges, keeps people at arm’s length, willing to play by the enemy’s rules in order to win (ex: using dark magic), has a sharp tongue, secretly incredibly lonely
LIKES: a good challenge, the thrill of the chase, being out and about at night, beating anyone at anything, things that offend the strict upper class (metal music, partying, ripped pants, etc.), dueling, coffee, sharp pointy objects (knives, swords, etc.), card games that require bluffing, large dogs
DISLIKES: being undervalued/dismissed, werewolves and vampires, high heels, not having control, Christmas (her mom died around then), people who aren’t willing to get their hands dirty, being stereotyped as a spoiled rich girl, what she perceives as injustice (although her concept of morality is admittedly a little skewed), high society events, early mornings
HOBBIES: knife throwing, going to bars, playing with her dog, being a vigilante
GENERAL PERSONALITY: Most people try to fight their demons, but Alex tends to embrace hers. If you can’t beat them, join them. That doesn’t make her any less of a fighter though. She’s strong and driven, and everything life throws at her just tends to make her hit back harder. But while her reckless determination and willingness to do whatever is necessary might make her superb at her job (if slightly infuriating to her superiors), they also tend to complicate her relationships. Most people get irritated with her hot head and cool attitude that seems not to give a damn about anyone. But in truth, Alex cares far more than she lets on. Life has simply taught her to turn her heart off to hide how lonely and desperate for love she truly is. On the outside though, she’s a tough as nails survivor who can hold her own just as well in a drinking contest or snark match as she can in a duel. Just because she hasn’t found anyone worthy of her loyalty (aside from her dog) doesn’t mean she doesn’t understand the concept. And if anyone ever came along who finally managed to earn her trust, they might be surprised to discover what a fierce and devoted ally this lone wolf could truly be.

Other Family: Krieger (her German Shepherd), Dietrich Jäger (grandfather, wealthy and powerful German wizard)
Character History: Like any child’s story, Alex’s begins with her parents. Her father was the oldest son of a proud wizarding family. While not pureblood, their pedigree was impressive enough that those who touted pureblood philosophy could stand to have them around. The family was only just clinging to the bottom rung of high society when Nicholas entered Hogwarts. But he was a cunning lad, and he took advantage of his sorting into Slytherin House to ingratiate himself with several of his wealthy housemates by using his brains to their advantage. By the time Nicholas graduated, he had wormed his way securely into the elite.
His contacts earned him a job at the Ministry, where he quickly climbed the political ladder. It was while on a business trip to Germany that he met Karolina. The German witch came from another strong magical line that fell just shy of pure. Her father Dietrich was one of the most powerful wizards in Germany with his hands discreetly in the pockets and schemes of just about every major player. As such, Karolina had grown up as a princess. She was recently widowed, having lost her first husband in a duel that left her to raise their infant son. But she was beautiful and smart, and joining their families would be beneficial to both sides. While there might initially have been a spark of love between them, it soon died, leaving them in a partnership of convenience rather than a true marriage.
A year into the marriage, little Alexandra was born. She was given her mother’s last name, just like her brother, since it carried more weight, especially as the family was living in Germany. Nicholas felt little for his daughter, who he saw mainly as a tool. Karolina, however, was gradually changing due to motherhood. Her focus began shifting from power to her children. She became determined to do whatever was necessary to defend them and give them a good life. And out of that determination, true affection was born. She fiercely loved both Alex and Franz, who were as close as twins despite being only half siblings. Had Karolina been allowed to raise them into adulthood, it seems likely her love would have tempered Nicholas and Dietrich’s influence and turned both children into fierce but ultimately good warriors. Fate, however, was not on her side.
Alex was four when Lord Voldemort was defeated back in England. While the Warwick family had slightly dark leanings (as, coincidentally enough, did the Jäger family), Nicholas had been clever enough to cover what subtle support he had leant the Dark Lord. However, the quest of the British Ministry to hunt down many of Voldemort’s remaining followers led a number of them to scatter across the continent. A few days before Alex’s sixth Christmas, Karolina took the children out to a Christmas market. It should have been their nanny, but young Alex had asked her mother to take them instead. That would prove to be a highly unfortunate twist of fate. Just as they were about to head home, a werewolf attacked the market. Karolina was killed before she could get her wand out. Franz, all of ten years old, panicked and fled, leaving young Alex alone. She was saved from being bitten or killed only by a combination of her first act of magic – causing several wooden and ceramic goods from nearby stalls to explode, pelting the werewolf with shrapnel – and the intervention of a brave young wizard who managed to apparate her away before the enraged werewolf could finish her off. She did sustain scratches from the werewolf’s claws, the scars of which she still carries. But she was alive, unlike her mother.
Everything changed after that. Nicholas was deeply affected by his wife’s death, realizing all too late he had developed genuine feelings for her somewhere down the line. In his grief, he became obsessed with werewolves. Namely killing them and ending their curse. Suddenly Nicholas was spending all his time researching the creatures. He gathered information on any field that might be of service – tracking, werewolf laws, how best to take down a raging beast. About a year after Karolina’s death, he got it into his head that Alex should learn the same. She had been living with her brother and grandfather in Germany since her father had returned to his native England, so Nicholas asked for, and was granted, partial custody of his daughter, for whom Dietrich had little use.
From then on, Alex’s life was split into two parts. Half her time was spent in Germany, where her grandfather taught her about etiquette, culture, high society and power. The other half was spent with Nicholas in England being groomed as a hunter. He trained his daughter in subjects ranging from woodcraft to dueling. While the methods of both men were harsh (and in the case of Nicholas, highly questionable, especially as Alex was only a child), there was no denying the results. Alex was a quick learner who proved highly talented when provided with the proper motivation. Unknown to her father and grandfather, and perhaps even to Alex herself, that motivation was a deep craving for love. She remembered just enough of her mother to understand how very much she had lost. Franz too had turned away from her, blaming his sister for their mother’s death as a way of coping with the enormous guilt of knowing he had almost abandoned Alex to the same fate. That left Alex effectively alone. So she threw herself into each task she was presented with in the hope that it would someday be enough.
When she turned eleven, Alex was accepted into Durmstrang Institute like her brother. While she did well enough in her classes, particularly those that would further her father’s goals, friends were hard to come by. The werewolf scars Alex bore made her a bit of a freak. It didn’t help that her older brother, growing colder by the day, had established himself as a force of social power at the school. No one wanted to risk running afoul of manipulative Franz. The combination of the loneliness and the anger Alex was feeling over the state of her life resulted in more than her fair share of fights, both physical and magical. That made her enemies, which led to bullying as it became increasingly apparent Franz really didn’t give a damn about his friendless younger sister. But the gruff dueling professor saw potential in Alex and began offering her private lessons in both his subject and martial arts as an outlet. A few months after the lessons began, Alex let loose on one of her worst tormentors. The injuries she inflicted landed the boy in the hospital wing for a week. The month of detentions Alex received was more than worth the screeching halt it brought to her status as a prime target for bullying.
The majority of her school years passed in something of a blur. Breaks were spent either training with her father or playing at being a cold princess in her grandfather’s circles. At school, Alex became a fierce lone wolf who made it abundantly clear that she didn’t need any friends anyway. She excelled in most of her classes, showing a particular aptitude for martial magic and what of the dark arts the students were taught. The TriWizard Tournament occurred during her sixth year, but despite all her skill, the potential champions had been limited only to those students who were of age. Since their selection would take place mere days before Alex’s seventeenth birthday, that put her out of the running and saw her left behind at Durmstrang with the rest of her peers. Initially she was irritated at losing the chance to prove her worth. But eventually she decided Hogwarts would’ve been too soft a place to spend her final year anyway.
Upon graduation, Alex applied for training as a hit witch. Her father approved of the choice, believing it would give her even more valuable training towards dealing with werewolves. Her grandfather took a little longer to come around. Eventually, however, he saw the value of having a family member in law enforcement. And despite some authority issues and the initial prejudice against the rich girl playing at being a hit witch, Alex quickly proved she had it in her to be superb at the job. Near the end of her training, Voldemort was defeated again. His rise to power hadn’t affected Alex much in Germany. Her father, however, saw this as his chance to finally strike at the werewolves who had served the Dark Lord. In his zeal, he got himself killed by a pack leader. News of his death left Alex surprisingly numb.
She stayed in Germany for the next few years, building up her career as a top notch hit witch. What time she had left was spent tracking werewolves. Her hatred had tempered slightly over the years, leaving her willing to let alone any that kept themselves contained during the full moon. But she had no problem with putting down any beast that failed that test. A work mission to track down a vampire who then slaughtered several of her colleagues got vampires added to her hate list, and she found herself supplementing her previous education by her father to better find and combat them as well. Vampire hunting began to take up the larger portion of her vigilante hobby seeing as the beings tended to leave more bodies in their wake. But Alex still kept a close eye on werewolves, putting them down as needed. All in secret, of course. Such practices were technically illegal, although many in society would probably have chosen to look the other way much like her grandfather did. He saw it as clearing out the magical ranks, something that sat well with his idea that wizards and witches were above all other forms of life.
It was February 2003 when word came of escalating werewolf attacks in England. That alone might have caught Alex’s attention, but there were also confirmed sightings of the werewolf who had killed Alex’s mother. The lure of finally getting justice for Karolina was too much for Alex to resist. She applied for a job at the British Ministry, much to the disapproval of her grandfather and brother, who had been carefully groomed as Dietrich’s perfect heir. But Alex’s stubborn nature won out. She moved to England and quickly settled in. Despite her rebellious streak and the fact her family name carries no real weight in this country, her talent as a hit witch keeps her in fairly good standing with her bosses. Plus she provides a rather unique specialization in criminals who aren’t strictly human. While the job rarely calls for her to track down monsters of that particular variety, she still does plenty of hunting in her down time. And if all this talk of tightening legislation regarding werewolves comes to fruition, well, let’s just say Alex would be more than happy to help enforce it, on the books or off.
MISCELLANY

Former House: Durmstrang

Amortentia: roses, hot chocolate, cinnamon
Magical Abilities: Wandless magic - Her father saw the skill's value and put tremendous emphasis on making Alex learn it. She's far from an expert, but she has enough practice that she could probably bail herself out in an emergency. Probably.
