Amy settled into an armchair in the Gryffindor common room. It was nice to be back in Hogwarts again for another school year. In many ways Hogwarts and the Gryffindor Common room seemed like home than her actual home back in Wales did. Not that they had a bad home life or anything of the kind. Her parents were loving and the council house that the Westwoods lived in was nice enough, if small. However there was always something....magical, if you excuse the pun, about Hogwarts. And being a Gryffindor was something special she felt.
The 14 year old took out her flute from her robe. The young witch loved music and loved playing her flute. After years and years of practice she was finally started to become rather good at it as well. Music, to Amy’s mind, was another form of magic that could bring out all kind of emotions out of you or teleport you to another time and place. It had a power to captivate and mesmerise both for the person listening and the one playing the music.
She placed the flute to her lips and started to play a little tune. It didn’t really matter to her if she was going to disturb people by placing her music. Besides it was early in the year so it wasn’t like many other people were going to be studying or doing anything that much so hopefully they would excuse her flute playing. Heck maybe they would even enjoy it.

Madi hated History of Magic. Hated it. The class was nothing but a bunch of boring information about who had died when and why people should care. Very rarely was the reason actually good enough. But the bloody class was required, at least until she got out of her fifth year. So for now she was stuck with the class and its ridiculous essays. It had been ten bloody days, for Merlin’s sake. Who assigned an essay this long after only ten days?
Trying to do homework in the common room probably wasn’t a good idea. Lots of distractions to be had. Although Madison was actually rather hoping for a distraction at this point. Anything to get out of doing this bloody essay. Sadly, distractions seemed in rather short supply today, leaving her with no choice but to write on. Or try to. It was bloody slow going.
And then the flute started. Which might have been a rather welcome distraction at any other time. But right now Madi was grumpy and trying very hard to focus. Which made the flute nothing short of irritating. Especially given who was playing it. Madison had never gotten on very well with Amy Westwood. The younger girl was bossy and stubborn and a stickler for rules. She drove Madi mental. So that fact that it was her playing the flute didn’t help matters. “Can you keep it down?” Madi asked grumpily. “Some of us are trying to do homework.”

The Welsh witch-in-training was enjoying her own music and didn’t really notice that she was causing a disturbance to others. Not that she cared much if she did. Amy was in her own little world of wonder from her music.
However, Amy did stop playing when Madi told her to keep it down and said that some people were trying to do homework. For a moment the 14 year old considered if she should put her flute away and go and play it elsewhere but then why should she? It was just as much her common room as it was anyone else and she had every right to enjoy it as anyone other Gryffindor.
Besides which she didn’t really Madison too much. The 5th year seemed to have a bit of a problem with the Welsh lass and, if truth be told, Amy had an issue with her as well. The feeling was mutual as they say. Maybe if it had been another housemate Amy might have been more considerate towards them. As it was and given how grumpy the older girl was being, she decided not to be compliant.
”Not really....” she said matter-of-factly. ”...besides which you would be much better doing your homework in the library if you want some peace and quiet. I mean, seriously, this is a common room. It is hardly going to be the most silent and peaceful place in the world. With all the little first years excited about their new year and everyone else having a good time and doing their own thing. Maybe the Ravenclaw common room would be quiet with all the nerds who reside there. But even they go know to go to the library for real peace.” the 4th year shook her head. Honestly, why did a girl a year older than her have to be told to go to the library to do her homework. You would think they would know better?
As if to ensure that her defiance should be left in no-uncertain doubt the stubborn young lass put her flute back on the lips and returned to playing it once more.

Of course Amy wouldn’t stop playing. Why did she always have to be so full of herself? Madi rolled her eyes as Amy smarted off. “It’s quiet enough for homework when you’re not ever there squeaking away.” Truth be told, Amy wasn’t half bad with a flute. But Madison was already in a sour mood, and something about Amy just tended to rub her the wrong way. “Besides, if it's so noisy in here, how can you possibly concentrate on playing?” Madi's voice was practically dripping with sarcasm. “Wouldn’t it be easier to go play outside?”
But no. Amy went right back to playing, this time clearly intent on being irritating. Fine. Two could play that game. After a quick glance around to be sure Liza was nowhere in sight (couldn’t act up too much in front of her best friend and now head girl), Madi picked up a scrap of parchment and waded it into a ball that she threw Amy’s direction. It collided nicely with the side of Amy’s head. It wasn’t big enough to hurt, but it would definitely get the point across. Madison quickly swung her gaze back to her homework, bending over the textbook with a perfectly innocent expression.

Amy didn’t react when Madison accused her of ‘squeaking away’ she felt that the girl was trying to get a rise out of her with that remark and the 14 year old did not want to give Kingsley that kind of satisfaction. The Welsh girl knew how good she was at flute music and she wasn’t going to let anyone else bring her down. ”Maybe I can concentrate because I am more intelligent than you...” she said to Madison Kingsley as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. ”As I said, if you are having trouble concentrating the library would be the best place for you. Or maybe the hospital wing? The healer might be able to brew up something to help you focus a bit more.” The Gryffindor forth year knew that was a bit mean but didn’t care. Soon she returned to playing her flute just to be aggravating to the older girl. She was expecting a reaction from her but being hit in the side of a head by a paper ball was not what she was expecting. It didn’t hurt but it was still annoying. She briefly considered bursting out into tears to try and upset Kingsley and make her feel bad but she had a feeling that wouldn’t work. Instead she simply rolled her eyes, picked up the paper ball and marched over the Kingsley. ”Oh real mature” she said as she carelessly tossed the parchment ball back on the girl’s desk. ”You really should be trying to set a good example to the younger students, you know. Throwing around paper balls and acting like a 8 year old is not exactly something that first years look up to in an older pupil.” the Welsh witch spoke in a serious tone of voice, before shaking her head.
