Remus John Lupin |
Defense Against The Dark Arts Professor / 43 years old, born March 10th / Halfblood and also a werewolf / Male |
Married || Heterosexual |
APPEARANCE
Played by David Thewlis (link)
DESCRIPTION: Remus' eyes are icy blue, tired, wrinkled and bagged. They are still quite round and sharp, though. His hair is in that wonderland between very light brown and grey. Still mostly brown, but the grey is peeking through more and more. He wears it high and close to his head, though it still manages to look somehow windswept, no matter how neat he (or Dora) tries to keep it. He's lean and of slightly above average height. He’s lanky and a bit underweight.
Remus’ hands always seem to be moving, usually rubbing across the scars and stubble on his cheeks. If not there, they are stuffed in his pockets, tapping out invisible melodies. Remus has a gentle face with soft features and almost always a smile. He stands slightly stooped, with shoulders sloped forward. His pain and tension shows in his body, never in his face. The face is a cool mask, not wanting to broadcast what’s inside to the outside world. The pain only shows in how Remus holds himself.
PERSONALITY
POSITIVE TRAITS:Skilled and talented in magic, very tolerant and understanding, brave, good sense of humor, levelheaded and mature.
NEGATIVE TRAITS: Deep-seated shame in his condition as a werewolf, fear of rejection, placing loyalty over ethics/morality, pushes most people away from ever getting close, reminiscent to the point of mental absence at times.
LIKES: Leisurely strolls, red wine, hot pink is totally his favorite color (don't let him tell you otherwise)
DISLIKES: Bullying, intolerance, wolf imagery, unoriginal and/or harmful pranks.
HOBBIES: Making everything a teaching moment, conversing, having a good laugh, spending time with family, practicing magic, reading.
GENERAL PERSONALITY: Overall, Remus is a gentle and understanding person, with a complex that makes him believe this is not so. Even after all these decades, Remus struggles with his dangerous condition. He keeps most people at a safe distance from himself emotionally, because he fears he may one day hurt them. There are a few select people that have infiltrated those walls, however, and Remus is undoubtedly devoted to them. He would do absolutely anything for his loved ones. This is all well and good most of the time, but it does cause him troubles. While Remus is very committed to the equal treatment of all people, he will – with no hesitation – put his friends and family before any ethics and morality, even in his work.
Despite the inner turmoil, Remus is a pleasant person to be around. He hides his pain – physical and emotional – pretty well. He’s always happy to help or teach or help and teach. Over the years, he’s grown to quite like simple conversation as well. The sharp wit and humor of his youth has not faded one bit. Remus can be jovial at the best of times, and even still pulls the occasional prank, when the mood hits him.

Character History: Remus’ story really begins with his bite. He was bitten at such a young age – only five years old – that he really has no memories of life before the fact. Remus was bitten by a werewolf that his father had previously insulted, in retaliation. Fenrir Greyback crawled through Remus’ bedroom window and attacked him, presumably trying to kill him. Lyall managed to ward the werewolf off before that, but his son was officially transformed.
Remus’ parents were devastated, trying desperately to cure their child or at least make his pain a little more bearable. The boy’s transformations at the full moon were painful and terrible – and the older he got, the stronger both he and his urges got. The Lupins moved from town to town as the neighbors always grew suspicious, eventually. Remus was not allowed many friends, out of fear. His parents loved him very much; it would kill them to see their boy taken away or harmed because of something he couldn’t control. Thus, Remus’ childhood was a lonely one. He had to be locked up and warded with spells during the full moon, too, only adding to his misery.
As age eleven rang ever closer, Remus’ parents began to worry further. Of course, their son was showing signs of wizardry – but they doubted very seriously a young, volatile werewolf would be allowed at Hogwarts with the other children. Lyall attempted to teach his young son some things on his own – probably forming the basis for Remus’ interest and aptitude in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
The arrival, then, of one Albus Dumbledore at the Lupin home came as a shock. Dumbledore assured the Lupins that Remus would have a place at his school, and a safe place to transform in. Reluctantly, Lyall and Hope sent their boy to Hogwarts – a very wise decision, looking back. Remus was sorted into Gryffindor house. He made fierce and fast friends with a group of boys known as James, Sirius, and Peter. Once a month while at school, Remus was taken to a safe, abandoned shack in Hogsmeade, in order to live out his transformation in relative safety. Unable to control his urges, however, Remus often bit and scratched at himself while in werewolf form and locked up in the shack. He tried to hide his condition from everyone, but his close friends – James, Sirius, and Peter – were too clever to be lied to for long. They discovered what Remus was, and Remus was terrified that his only friends ever were going to leave him. Instead, the boys supported Remus, even learning how to become Animagi in order to keep him company during his transformations.
The group greatly enjoyed their time together at Hogwarts, calling themselves the Marauders. They kept each other company, discovered secrets, and of course, pulled plenty of pranks. Remus was by far the most reserved and mature of the group, though that didn’t stop him from joining in on the fun on occasion. He was eventually made a Prefect, but even that didn’t stop the shenanigans of his closest friends. During his time at Hogwarts, Remus was also hounded by a young Severus Snape, who eventually became the only non-Marauder student to discover his secret, though nothing very terrible came from it until much later.
Remus was a talented wizard with much magical aptitude, even learning nonverbal and wandless magic. However, his werewolf condition held him back severely in life. After Hogwarts, he could not hold a job because of the constant suspicion of his nature. His friend James supported him, and Remus joined the Order of the Phoenix with the rest of the Marauders. Despite the terrifying times, everything was okay, for a while. When James’ son got caught up in all the mess, however, people began to distrust Remus – even his former friends. When Voldemort was eventually defeated, the world grew a little bit brighter, but Remus fell into a very dark time. He lost the Order, all of his friends, and his mother. He did not want to burden his father ever again, so Remus took up living in a derelict cottage, alone and very unhappy. He was still very much unable to hold a job for very long, and lived in abject poverty for years.
Once again, Albus Dumbledore came into Remus Lupin’s life unexpectedly. He offered Remus a position at Hogwarts, teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. Remus was hesitant, just like his parents had been all those years ago, but by this time Wolfsbane potion had been invented. Remus was promised a supply, brewed by none other than Severus Snape himself. Remus took the job, and ended up meeting the son of his old friend James – Harry Potter. Remus stayed in this job for a year, eventually being reunited with his old friends Sirius and Peter. When the true nature of the situation that had gone down so many years ago came to light, Sirius forgave Remus. Remus had to resign at the end of the year – word had once again gotten out about his condition – but he was admittedly much happier this time around.
When Voldemort returned, Remus rejoined the Order. There, he met his future wife. He strongly resisted Nymphadora at first, afraid he would eventually hurt her, but eventually gave in. Remus was happy, for a time, doing missions for the Order and living with his old friend Sirius. Life once again cut that all short, taking Sirius from him for a final time during a battle at the Ministry. Remus pulled very much in to himself for a time after this, ignoring even his love Tonks. He spied on the werewolves for the Order; the work was soul-draining, but it kept him in minimal contact with the people that kept him alive.
Remus only made it through the next couple of years because of the lovely persistence of Tonks - or Dora, as he grew to refer to her as. She refused to give up on him, as did the Order (to this day Remus apologizes heavily for his standoffish behavior after Sirius' death). Slowly, Remus came back to himself again. He had a cause to fight for, and people he loved involved in it. He had purpose, and he met it wonderfully. Invigorated by this sense of purpose, he even allowed his weary little heart to pursue what it knew it wanted all along. He married Dora in short time.
Much inner turmoil surged through when, shortly after, they found themselves pregnant. With twins. Lycanthropy had never in history been passed down from father to child - but that wasn't enough to convince Remus. Luckily for him, and everyone in the Order that had to hear about it constantly, the twins came out more like their mother than their father. They were both Metamorphmagi. Remus was completely enamored with his children from the moment he met them, becoming the world's most anxiously protective father the instant they were born.
Good practice, because Teddy and Lily James were born almost exactly one month before the Battle of Hogwarts. Both Remus and Dora fought in the battle, very nearly meeting their untimely end. They both received extensive injuries, but lived to tell the tale - and help with the clean-up that ensued. Dora, as an Auror, saw to the Ministry side of Order business while Remus operated more covertly. His condition was still widely known and widely holding him back from employment - but he was more than happy to raise his children and help the Order eradicate their world's problems once and for all.
He went on like this for five years, bringing us to present day. More and more, a feeling grew in Remus that their troubles were far from over. Werewolves, among other creatures, were starting to face increased discrimination. He outright doesn't trust this new Minister. And always, always, he knows those with dark hearts are just waiting in the shadows for their next opportunity to rise. So, Remus has decided to do what Remus does best - teach. Practical things like defensive spells against dark arts, yes, but he also wants to teach the coming generations the values of loyalty and love, like he has always done.
MISCELLANY
Wand: 10 1/4", cypress wood, unicorn hair
Former House:Gryffindor
Affiliation:Order of the Phoenix
Amortentia: Old books because reading is fundamental, warm animal fur like a dog that's been lazing in the sun all day because nothing else smells closer to home, and bubblegum because he's a big fan of the color and it always reminds him of the scent.
Magical Abilities: Wandless magic - Remus has always been an adept and intelligent wizard. His involvement with the Order, along with the free time that came with not being able to find a job, prompted him to starting studying the art of wandless magic after he graduated from Hogwarts. He had plenty of help from some of the brightest wizards and witches of the era (Dumbledore among them), and with his own bright mind and plenty of Death Eaters to practice it against, had no troubles mastering the art over the years.
Corporeal Patronus - Once again, because of his skill in magic and desire to learn everything about it, Remus was eventually able to master a full-bodied Patronus in the form of a wolf.
