It wasn’t unusual for Hayden to wander off alone. In fact, with the exception of meals and classes, she spent almost all of her time by herself in some part of the castle or grounds. Sometimes Helena Ravenclaw came along and the two talked. But most of the time it was just Hayden. Which was just fine by her.
Today she had ended up seeking refuge down near the lake with her sketchpad. Although she wasn’t strictly speaking alone. The Giant Squid had come in close, and one of its tentacles broke the surface, almost as if it were waving. Hayden couldn’t help smiling. How could Muggle sailors have been so afraid of the creatures? This one certainly seemed friendly enough.
Her smile slid into a more neutral expression as she heard footsteps. She looked over her shoulder, craning her neck just a little to see around the tree she was leaning against, and found herself looking up at a prefect from her house. He certainly seemed nice enough, if a bit awkward at times. But why was he out here? She hadn't done anything wrong that she could think of. Well, aside from maybe sneaking off to visit the Thestrals. But nobody who cared should know about that. “Hey,” she said, her tone a bit uncertain. Maybe he was just out here for the same reason she was – peace and quiet.
