Hogsmeade had cleaned up nicely after the troll incident. There were still some signs of the chaos that had occurred, but for the most part it was business as usual. Aside from the Halloween decorations and students in costume. Frankly, Hayden was a little surprised they had been allowed back down here after what had happened. Maybe the headmistress assumed the situation was in hand now. Not that Hayden was complaining. She was supposed to meet Ari today, and she would brave just about anything to make that happen. November first was right around the corner, raising all sorts of worries about Toby. Was he going to get his registration sorted in time? Would that be better or worse than the alternative? What if the Ministry really did try to take him away? Would he push Hayden out again if things went south? To be worrying about that on top of her OWL year and trying to navigate her relationship with her new adoptive parents (via the occasional letter, which just made things even more awkward), suffice it to say Hayden was a little stressed. In light of all that, a few trolls trampling Hogsmeade almost seemed trivial. It had happened. It got sorted out. The end.
Hayden’s eyes roamed the Halloween decorations on the street as she waited in front of the Three Broomsticks for Ari. Orange and black were everywhere. Not to mention pumpkins, bats, and fake spider webs. The place had gone all out. Hayden had never really been much for Halloween though. People always wanted to dress up, and in recent years she hadn’t had either the money or the transfiguration skills for a decent costume. So while some of her classmates wandered around dressed as this or that, Hayden was in jeans and a jacket plus a blue beanie trimmed in copper (from beanie-obsessed Uncle Isaac) with a blue scarf draped loosely around her shoulders (from Connor, who was thrilled to finally have another Ravenclaw in the family). She had a satchel over her shoulder with some pencils and paper just in case Ari felt up to some art while they talked. That seemed to have become a thing, much to Hayden’s delight.
Speaking of which. A small smile touched Hayden’s face as she caught sight of Ari heading her way. There was a time Hayden would’ve stood there and waited. But things had changed over the summer. Now Hayden took a few steps forward to meet Ari partway, wrapping her arms around the counselor in a hug as soon as she was close enough. That was another fairly recent development, something that had started shortly before school. Hayden was slowly getting used to all the hugging and touching from the O’Brien clan, but Ari was the only person so far she would actually initiate hugs with. She held on longer than she needed to, just savoring the hug. It felt safe. Hayden was still getting used to that. “It’s good to see you.” That was about the closest she came so far to admitting she actually cared about someone. She finally pulled away so she could grin up at Ari. “How've you been?”
