October 31th : Tobias has just returned from registering It was done. There was nothing he could do anymore but wait. Professor Odili had brought Tobias back to the castle and they had a cup of tea. But there had been no conversation. The Gryffindor didn’t want to talk, he wondered if he even could talk. He felt… empty. While his eyes were red from all the tears they’d shed, they were done crying. Now he was just tired and lost. The other students in the hallway were already dressed up in Halloween costumes. Oh yeah it was halloween tonight… Even if Toby had a costume all he wanted was to curl up in bed and end the day. Every time he passed someone, he couldn’t help but wonder how much longer he could go unnoticed. Surely some people already knew, mainly staff and Gryffindors. But the whole school? It was only a matter of time before parents started writing the school. The Gryffindor sighed and decided to move towards the Gryffindor tower. There where he had returned to again. He wore the hood of his robes over his head, so that even if somebody took a glance at him it was hard to see the look on his face. Nobody liked to be seen in a weak moment. Especially not someone who had a couple of enemies walking around here. When he passed through the fifth floor corner near the Ravenclaw common room, he thought to have caught a sight Hayden Pierce O'Brien. She was walking a few meters in front of him, her back turned towards him. While he saw her, she didn’t see him. Toby opened his mouth to call out for her but he couldn’t get any noise out. Then he walked, his legs couldn’t carry him that fast but he somehow managed to catch up with her. Toby didn’t know why he was doing this. But somehow he felt safer around a friend than being alone in the Gryffindor common room. He reached out and grabbed the sleeve of her robe, pulling her to a stop. That was it. He couldn’t do much more to tell her he needed her.

It had been one hell of a weekend, that was for sure. Between helping Alec fend off trolls in Hogsmeade on Saturday and finally spending some time with Ari on Sunday, it was easily the most excitement Hayden had seen in a long time. But she wasn’t thinking about any of that right now. Nor was she thinking about Halloween. No, as she headed down the hall toward Ravenclaw Tower with her sketchpad and pencils in a bag over her shoulder, she found herself thinking about Toby. The registration deadline was tomorrow. Had he sorted things out? What had he even decided to do? They wouldn’t really take him away, would that? She had actually toyed with writing Claire to ask some of her questions, but all adoptive awkwardness aside, she had been stopped by the sickening feeling that she probably didn’t want to know the answers.
So instead Hayden was left to worry. She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t even notice the Gryffindor boy fall in behind her until he caught hold of her sleeve. People rarely tried to get Hayden’s attention in the halls. She was quiet and kept to herself, and most people didn’t seem to register her existence outside of the occasional encounter. A fact that sat just fine with Hayden. So who would want her attention? She was genuinely curious as she turned around. Her expression brightened as she recognized Toby under the hood, only to fell again when she saw his red eyes. Toby wasn’t the crying sort. He yelled and hit things. If he had been crying, then something was very, very wrong. “Hey. Are you okay?” Hayden glanced up and down the hallway at the students around them before taking hold of his wrist and tugging him into a nearby classroom that was thankfully empty. Once they were inside with a closed door protecting them from prying eyes, Hayden turned her own worried gaze back to Toby. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Had he gotten in another fight again? He didn’t look hurt. Maybe it was about the registration. Sweet Merlin, what if they really were trying to take him away? Hayden didn't know if she could handle a blow like that. She tried to stay calm and give him a chance to explain, but she could feel her stomach twisting itself into worried knots.

Even if Hayden had already noticed him, Toby continued to hold her sleeve. Which was something he rarely did aside from today apparently. Physical contact usually made him uncomfortable but now he just wanted to make sure she was really here. More importantly that she wasn’t going to leave him. Even if she promised him and he knew she would keep it, he couldn’t help but feel like the world had given up on him. Toby opened his mouth to answer her question but he couldn’t bring out any sound. “......I…..” A very mild single letter came out. Was he okay? Physically yeah, he was unharmed but he’d gone through a lot of stress today. He had a mental shut down.
Then Hayden pulled him with her. Even if he would have wanted to pull back he wouldn’t have had the strength to do so. He gazed up to her only to alter his eyes a moment later. What was he going to say? Could he even speak? His gaze returned to Hayden as he doubtfully bit his lip. “Can… C-can you read me a story?” The Gryffindor finally spoke, realize he couldn’t talk about where he had been today. Not now at least it would come later. Now he spoke his needs; distraction, trusted company and peace.

Toby wasn’t the sort to initiate physical contact. Not that Hayden really was either, so they tended to get along just fine. Usually the closest they got was sitting beside each other with their shoulders almost touching. But now Toby had hold of her sleeve, and he was very much not letting. Something was wrong. Very wrong. That was confirmed by his apparent inability to get a word out. Hayden hadn’t felt this helpless since she watched the burning store collapse with her parents still inside. Toby was hurting, badly, and there didn’t seem to be anything she could do.
Her worry only increased as Toby failed to meet her eyes. But then he was talking, barely. Offering up something she could do. Hayden nodded. “Sure.” She had the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in her satchel with her art supplies. A gift from Connor. Apparently he was reading them to Micah and wanted Hayden to be caught up when she came home for Christmas. Although she would probably have all three finished by that point. But that wasn’t what mattered here. Hayden let go of Toby’s hand so she could sit down against the wall, silently waiting for him to join her. She pulled the book out of her bag and flipped past the bookmark to the first page. Might as well start at the beginning. There she paused briefly. On a sudden impulse, she reached over and took Toby’s hand in her own so she could give it a small squeeze. Then she started to read out loud. It was a quaint beginning for a book. Calming. Or at least it had been for Hayden. Maybe it would calm Toby down enough that he could talk about whatever had happened. Hayden's mind was racing even as her mouth moved over the words. Maybe she should write to Ari. Or Claire. Toby was her only real friend, for Merlin's sake. There had to be something she could do. Something more substantial than just giving him a moment of distraction.

If Toby could manage to from a smile in his current state, he would have done so when Hayden agreed on reading him a story. “Thank you,” he whispered, the only way he could let her know that he was grateful for her help. Today had been crazy, he was completely worn out and done with feeling all sorts of emotions. Rest was what he needed or he might collapse. Aside from the stress and fear he had felt, he was also deeply embarrassed for the way he had acted towards Professor Odili. He felt like he should apologize tomorrow but he might not because he was Toby and he almost never apologized.
As Hayden took a seat, the Gryffindor boy gazed over her not sitting down until she gave him the signal. He couldn’t help but feel dirty after all the looks he had gotten in the Ministry. Professor Odili had done something about it each time but a lot of times he had still caught the gaze before the Head of Hufflepuff could do something.
Toby sat down and stared at the ground as Hayden started reading the book. He only tensed up when she took his hand but relaxed in a mere second. That was when he sort of deflated. All the tension seemed to blow out like steam in a train. He fell limp against Hayden’s shoulder and buried his face in her clothes. His eyes closed as he continued to listen to the story. He didn’t think of anything, just her calming voice and the tale. Tobias would never ever have done a thing like this. But right now, he needed this type of comfort.

Hayden’s worry only got worse as she took Toby’s hand. He tensed briefly, as expected, but he didn’t pull away or lash out over the contact. Just the opposite. He seemed to collapse into Hayden, his face burying itself in her shoulder. Not good. It made Hayden feel utterly helpless. So she read. She read all about the hobbits and a birthday party and a strange ring left to Frodo. She wasn’t really sure how long she kept going. But finally, at the end of a chapter, she paused and looked over at Toby. “Do you want to talk about it?” she asked softly. There was no demand in her voice. If he wanted to talk, she would listen. And if not, she would keep right on reading. That seemed so small in the grand scheme of things. Such a useless little piece of comfort. But right now, it was all she could do.

As Toby was already calm and worn out this wasn’t needed to calm down. What he needed this for was to seek protection, distraction. He couldn’t help but think how badly he behaved in the Ministry. Professor Odili had been nothing but helpful and kind. How could he ever face the man after all the actions he pulled. Being in panic and fear was no excuse. The story about hobbits drifted him away from his deep thoughts or maybe it was Hayden’s soothing voice. Either way it seemed to work.
He would never admit this to himself or others but it actually felt good to be this close to someone. As long as it was someone he trusted and right now that role could only be suited for this Ravenclaw. Toby was half asleep when she asked him if he wanted to talk about it. He decided he owed her the information. Toby had held back on information all the time but now he was actually certain that they were friends, he could talk about things. Right? “It’s done,” he whispered. There was a small pause before he realized he wasn’t probably clear enough. “Professor Odili took me to the Ministry today.”
