She couldn’t breathe. That was Dani’s first truly coherent thought. Something was filling her lungs, and it wasn’t air. She coughed furiously as she rolled over and pushed herself to her knees. Her eyes were stinging. It was dreadfully hard to see. Her addled brain was having a hard time processing what was happening. Warm. She was warm. No, make that hot. That made no sense. The insulation in here was terrible. She should be freezing. Then her nose finally kicked in, and suddenly the whole world seemed to snap into focus. Smoke. She was surrounded by smoke. That crackling sound behind her was fire. Dani craned her neck to look over her shoulder, her eyes widening as she saw the wall of flames behind her. What the hell… She pushed herself hastily to her feet, and her hand knocked against something that rolled across the floor. Her wand. Why was her wand beside her? She’d hidden it under a floorboard so the wolf wouldn’t destroy it. How had she gotten it out? The bloodied ends of her fingers as she scooped it up answered that question. Somehow she had gotten the board up. But how… Bloody hell, what had happened to her arm? She was still clothed more or less, which was odd. The wolf had struck before she’d been fully prepared. But most of one sleeve was gone, burnt around the edges. There was a serious burn on her arm that her brain was only now registering the pain of. What in the hell had happened? A horrific creaking sound echoed overhead, and then part of the roof was crashing down behind her. Dani yelped as she dove out of the way. Shit. Escape now, questions later. She broke into a run across the wooden floor, leaping over a hole in the rotting floorboards. It was almost impossible to see in the thick smoke. Her lungs were burning as she coughed furiously. Where was the bloody door? The shack had seemed like a good idea before the full moon. Some place a little more secluded than her apartment since the Prophet seemed to be right about increased aggression. Any noises that escaped her charms would be ignored as the building being haunted. And its decrepit state would cover any damage the wolf caused. But she had no idea where in the house the wolf had taken her, and there wasn’t much time to figure it out if the rising heat in the building was any indication. The ground disappeared in front of her, leaving her pitching forward. A series of hard knocks indicated she had managed to find the stairs. She slammed into the bottom, and sharp needles shot up her leg from her ankle. No time to deal with that. She could see the door now through the haze, a patch of flames separating her from the exit. Dani whipped her wand through Aguamenti. The heat of the fire turned most of the water to steam, but just enough survived to clear a narrow corridor to the exit. And then there were the wards. Dani furiously coughed her way through the counter spells to the charms she had used to lock herself in. The second floor groaning overhead added extra urgency to her frantic movements. Finally they were all down. A shove knocked the door open, and Dani tumbled out onto the ground beyond. She managed to catch herself on her hands and took a few stumbling steps forward, far enough to get herself out of reach of the building. There she collapsed. She twisted around to stare up at the shack. Smoke was coming out of the windows, and tongues of fire had licked through part the roof. But how? Where had the fire comes from? A gust of cold November air hit the exposed nerves of her burned arm, drawing a hiss of pain from Dani’s lips. She looked down to try and examine it. Her eyes, however, were caught by her hands. It was easier to see them now that she was out of the smoke. The ends of her fingers were bloody. She had accepted that initially, but now it made no sense. The claws should’ve taken the brunt of any injury. And then there were the marks on her hand that ran up her other arm. They were only skin deep. Not from claws. More like… fingernails. The memories slammed into her like a horse kicking her in the head. She hadn’t turned. Well, she had. It was confusing as hell. Her mind had gone like usual. But the wolf hadn’t appeared. It was like the wolf’s mind had been trapped in a human body. Somehow the eclipse must have screwed with the transformation. And then the wolf had dug up her wand… Her eyes widened in horror as she looked back up at the building. Her savage mind had been capable of casting magic. She had started the fire. With the wand or just her own hands she wasn’t entirely sure. But she had set it. Sweet Merlin, what if she had gotten out? The damage she could’ve done… And then her frozen blood turned even colder. Rosa and Graham. Were they okay? What if they had gotten out? What if they had hurt someone? A loud crack sounded behind her, and Dani jumped. There was a man behind her in green robes indicating the hospital. Which as far as she could tell was in cahoots with the Ministry. If he tried to tend to her burned arm, he would see the werewolf scars around it. And that would mean Azkaban. Dani didn’t even take the time to think. She hurled a knockback jinx toward the man, and then she was on her feet, running down the hill as fast as her pained foot would go. There were trees near the bottom. Maybe she could lose him there. In hindsight, it would’ve made far more sense to apparate. But the last few minutes had her far too rattled to think straight. The cold morning air wasn’t helping her smoke-filled lungs. It was dreadfully hard to breathe as she stumbled and slid her way down the hill. She made it to the tree line at the bottom, but only just. She had barely reached cover when her injured foot caught something, sending her hurtling towards the ground. Dani cried out as she pushed herself up on hands and knees. She rolled over a bit so she was sitting with her back against the rough bark of a tree. Her foot definitely felt sprained or broken now. The exposed nerves of her burned arm were screaming in agony. Plus there were her bloody fingertips and a myriad of other scratches and bruises. And she was still fighting for air. A tear escaped unbidden down her face, leaving a clean trail through the thin layer of dirt and soot on her face. The sound of dead leaves crunching underfoot signaled that the man from the shack had found her. Dani lifted her wand in his direction, although it was trembling slightly. “I don’t want to hurt you.” Her voice was desperate and raspy from the smoke but no less firm. She didn’t want to hurt anyone. But she wasn’t going to let the Ministry toss her in a cell and throw away the key. Not like this. She was not just an animal they could chain up. If she had to fight for her life, then so be it. Tristan McAlister(OOC - I had a little too much fun with this, which is why it's so long. Sorry, not sorry.)

Tristan was starting to hate the moon and he supposed that werewolves would share his sentiment. The shift had been hell and only felt like it was getting worse by the hour. The end was in sight, the sun was due up soon and then he could go home and cuddle up with his cat and sleep away all the horrible things he'd seen in the course of twelve hours. Maybe add some liquid anesthesia in the form of firewhiskey if sleep wasn't enough to take the edge off. The large man had just eased his frame into one of the couches in the break room with a cup of coffee when they were to be sent out again. His 'temporary' partner while Theo was away was already snore deep in a nap and he didn't bother to wake him. The man, Hobbs, was fairly useless anyway and it was a simple enough and didn't sound too wolfy. A fire in Hogsmeade, the shrieking shack to be specific. Someone likely got a little too ambitious with their wand on their drunk walk home from The Three Broomsticks. He would only be there as a formality, the building had been unoccupied for ages.
He apparated to just outside the shrieking shack. The sun had only barely poked up beyond the hill. He'd been soclose to getting off. Tristan didn't have much time to appreciate the sunrise as he was hit square in the chest with a knockback jinx nearly the moment he materialized. When someone was so large they tended to hit the ground very hard and Tristan was no exception, smacking against the packed earth with a groan. Rolling on to his stomach, he just barely saw his attacker as she fled down the hill. She was just a blur of long, singed hair. The Medi-Wizard hauled himself to his feet, brushing wet grass and dirt off of his robes. The running suited him just fine, the woman obviously didn't want help and if she had stuck around he might have felt morally obligated to help her. Let her go, whoever it was looked like they were old enough to make the decision for themself.
With his arms folded, Tristan turned his attention to the burning building. Whoever was supposed to come put the fire out was taking their time. A lot of fires had been set across England and Scotland today, at least one had been the home of a werewolf intentionally set ablaze by the neighbors to 'get rid of the problem' , the fire suppression team was likely running behind and their hands were undoubtedly full. The blonde wizard considered trying his hand at it, the sooner it was out the sooner he could go home, and had even gotten his wand out when he heard a cry behind him. Damn his often overlooked sense of compassion. The blonde huffed, ran a hand through his hair and over his face before he retrieved the medical pack he'd dropped when attacked and made the trek down the hill.
She was a small body leaned against a tree, so dirty and covered with soot that she nearly blended right in to the dirt. As he approached the woman drew her wand and he stopped right in his place. Despite having a wand pointed at him, Tristan remained relaxed and casual, hands in the pockets of his robes and shoulders slouched. "Why hurt me when you're doing such a bang up job of hurting yourself?" The Medi-Wizard arched his eyebrows at his question. Nutter. "S'fine if you don't want my help. I'll just wait 'til you pass out before saving your life." He withdrew his arm to make a show of checking his watch "Shouldn't be long now. I might still be able to make breakfast."
And wait Tristan would. He watched the woman, arms crossed over his chest and face decidedly neutral. "Feeling a bit cold yet? That's not the weather, that's shock. Don't worry, soon you won't feel anything at all." He tilted his chin up to look at the sun as it crawled higher in the sky. "Enjoy the sun while you can, things will go dark in a bit. Maybe you'll see it later, maybe not. Things get a bit more complicated when you do actually pass out." Biting comments were his way of trying convince his patients that he actually had their best interest in mind without showing the softer sides of his heart. He was a former Slytherin after all, emotion was something reserved for those closest to him.

The man didn’t seem scared. Which made perfect sense considering how small and pitiful Dani probably looked. And he had a point, unfortunately. Dani knew enough about healing to recognize that her body was exhausted. Between that and the burns and a hint of blood loss, passing out was pretty much inevitable. She needed help and fast. But. “I’m not going to the hospital,” she informed him even as her wand hand trembled. The Ministry would be watching the place after a full moon. “They’ll put me away, and I didn’t do anything. I haven’t hurt anyone. Only me.” She was saying too much, and somewhere in the back of her mind she knew it. But the burned nerves in her arm were starting to scream, and her fingers stung from bloodying themselves prying up floorboards, and the chill air felt like shards of glass on her smoke-filled lungs. She felt more like a scared child than she had in a long time. The thought cut through her chest like a knife. She wanted her mother. She wanted to curl up in a corner and be told she was going to be fine. But her mother wasn’t there. Somehow she had to get out of this herself.
The healer was still talking as Dani started to shake. He was right, damn it. She was going to pass out soon, and then he was going to do his job anyway. At least if she was awake she could keep an eye on him. But how could she trust him? The only healer she knew was Meg’s brother... Hang on. Dani swallowed hard as she set her teeth against the chattering. “Theo Ashland. Do you know him?” They must work together, right? If he knew Theo, if he was someone Theo trusted… It wasn’t much, but it was the best test Dani had right now.
She bit down on the inside of her mouth as she forced herself to lower her wand. Her hand remained tightly curled around it as she set it in her lap. If he tried anything, she could knock him out. Or something. Dani had never really had to hurt anyone to keep this secret. She wasn’t completely sure she had it in her. For others, maybe. But for herself? A breath of chill air sent her into a coughing fit, and she leaned forward as she tried to catch her breath. Merlin, this was a mess. Had Graham and Rosa’s nights gone like this? There wasn’t much time to worry about them because the healer had reached Dani now. She watched him with wide frightened eyes, hand still tight around her wand. Once he got a closer look at the scars around the burn stretching up her arm, would he still see an injured girl? Or would he see a monster? There really wasn’t any way to know.

Tristan found the woman's words....strange. Maybe a bit alarming. Most people who were injured wanted to stop being injured, get some pain medication in them and stop bleeding or burning or whatever. He glanced back towards the shack, briefly considering if he should return and search for another victim. Pieces started to fit together for him, girl bloody and burned the morning after the full moon and scared of being hauled away. "At this rate the morgue might be a more appropriate destination." he told her, voice even and a mask of indifference plastered across his face. If his spidey sense was correct, if she was what he thought, that was her business. The Ministry may have an increased presence at St. Mungo's but her condition beyond the immediate life threat was between her and the Ministry and not something he particularly cared about. The moon had set, she wasn't dangerous aside from the wand pointed at him.
Wands in his face didn't necessarily rattle the tall blonde, having gotten in his fair share of drunken duels and wrestled more than enough confunded patients. Besides, she was injured and shaking, the unsteadiness of the wand did little to intimidate him. The young woman was obviously in pain and that pushed on the sensitive parts of his shielded heart. For someone who prided himself on his guarded emotions, he really did care and didn't like to see discomfort. At her question he tilted his head, it wasn't a very easy question to answer anymore. Did anyone really know Theo Ashland, given what had happened? Murder and lies... "I thought I did." he admitted, perhaps more philosophical than the situation called for. "He" was "is my partner."
His answer apparently satisfied her and she lowered her wand and the tension eased out of his muscles, relaxing his posture slightly. Tristan moved closer, steps sure and steady. The Medi-Wizard regarded his injuries with an expert eye. The scratches were superficial but the burn... One could lose a lot of body heat through a full thickness burn and the almost-winter air wouldn't help. The scars were... interesting but he didn't falter. Tristan eased his wand out of it's pocket, taking her injured arm to expose the burn. "I would appreciate it if you could refrain from hexing me while I'm trying to help you." He flourished his wand over the wound, muttering an incantation under his breath, a spell to take the heat out of the burn and help soothe some of the pain. Once the charm was cast, Tristan set his wand down and rummaged through his trusty jump bag, fishing out a some supplies.
"If you insist on avoiding the hospital you'll have to take extra care to keep your wounds free of infection." the blonde explained, uncorking his bottle of wound cleaning potion. "Your skin is your immune system's first line of defense." He applied a liberal amount of the potion to the woman's wounds "And it doesn't work when it's all burnt off, especially when you've gone rolling around in the dirt." He picked up a thing or two from his time with Theo (the git) and often talked his way through his treatments. When he was satisfied the wound was clean he recorked the bottle and set it next to the woman. Next up was burn paste. "This'll help the wound heal up, but it'll take a few days at least. You'll need to clean it and reapply the paste twice daily. You can have these." His kindness would also buy him an opportunity to visit the pharmacy and just maybe he could catch Eoin there, who said good deeds didn't pay off? He coated the girl's wounds in a healthy amount of the paste and set to dressing the wound, wrapping her arm in a clean bandage.

The man’s answer to her question was odd, to say the least. But he did sound like he knew Theo. And as more than just an acquaintance at that. Not that it provided much reassurance. Dani hadn’t particularly cared for Theo the one time she had really been around him. He was too emotional and explosive. But it was the only connection she had at this time. So she forced herself to lower the wand.
Dani’s muscles were tense as the man approached. Just because she had to trust him didn’t mean she had to like it. She flinched as he touched her arm, but not from pain. More out of fear. But he didn’t freeze or attack her or start cursing her existence. He just took it all in stride. Dani let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She did tense up briefly as he drew his wand, but she forced herself to relax again when he seemed to be directing it at her arm. Her voice seemed to have disappeared, leaving a nod her only response to his request. There was a strange tingling in her arm, and then the pain eased considerably. Dani leaned her head back against the tree as the sharp agony slowly receded to a manageable level. Ironically, it was only now that she realized just how much it had hurt. Tears welled up in her eyes again as the full weight of the situation set in. Dani turned her face to the side, trying to wipe her face on her sleeve before it got too obvious. She probably didn’t accomplish much more than rearranging the light layer of soot on her cheeks, but it was the best she could do for the moment.
The man was talking again, and Dani nodded. “I’ve got some practice at that,” she said, her voice croaky from the smoke. At another date, there would have been a hint of self-deprecating humor in her tone. But now her voice just sounded flat. She sniffed to be sure the tears were at bay as the man applied burn paste to her arm. The light rebuke that followed was almost funny given the situation. “I hadn’t exactly planned on that.” Her tone lightened ever so slightly, only to drop again as she added, “On any of it.” She could just barely see smoke rising from the direction of the shack through what foliage was left on the trees. It seemed to be contained though. People had probably shown up to deal with the fire.
Before she could nervous about that, however, the healer was giving her supplies and instructions. That struck her for some reason. Aside from Meg, he was the first person since reaching England that she had allowed to help her. Maybe that shouldn’t mean much, but it did. She had to swallow before she could manage a scratchy, “Thanks” in response to his kindness. She looked down at her side where her wand rested all but forgotten in her hand. “Sorry I knocked you down. I thought…” What had she thought? That he was there to take her away? To eliminate a threat? Whatever it was, she certainly hadn’t expected him to help her.
She looked back up, her eyes wide and her voice small. “Please don’t tell anyone.” It wasn’t fair to ask him to lie. Not after he had just patched her up. But if the Ministry found out he had helped a werewolf, they might come looking. A lot of people came through the Three Broomsticks. How long would it take to match any description he gave to the bartender at the pub? Maybe she should have picked a less public place to work. But there could be no backing out now. Not with Graham and Rosa and Meg there. Dani just had to hope this healer she didn’t even know would decide a girl with a burn wasn’t worth mentioning.

Tristan did not waver one bit, not even when she flinched. If he paused, gave her time to think, then she might change her mind and decide against treatment. That could be a fatal decision for her and as much as he played the part of tall and aloof former Slytherin, he cared. His heart was steel plated, a hard outer shell protecting the softer bits underneath. With his upbringing it was necessary and something hard to shake. He couldn't show the girl that he cared about her wellbeing because that would make him vulnerable, simply out of the question.
She seemed to relax as he worked, whether it was because he was starting to establish a connection or because the pain was easing. Either way, it made things easier for him, he could let his own guard down. People were tense before hexing, one didn't go from relaxed to hurling curses in an instant. Tristan glanced up at the young woman's face just in time to see her turn away and take care of a tear and he gave her the privacy to grieve her injuries, returning his own blue eyed gaze to her arm. That was his business, everything else... the scars marring her skin and the tears running down her cheeks were her business. Hers. Not his. Not his.
Tristan nodded along, lips turning up in the slightest hints of a smile at her barely lightened tone. The wound looked better already, if he did say so himself. "Don't mention it." Really. Don't. Giving away supplies wasn't exactly smiled upon, especially with the inventory in the pharmacy all cocked up but it was the only way he could be almost sure she'd take care of her wound and not just brush it off. Wizards weren't immune to infection and he didn't know what sort of fire was smoldering back at the shack. Cursed fire, regular fire... Magic had so many varieties. He was pulled out of his musings by a statement that sounded like it was actually meant for him.
"You're just full of good decisions this morning." Knocking him down, tumbling down a hill after fleeing a burning building. Her next statement coaxed his eyebrows up a bit, a small hint of humor tugging at the corner of his lips. "You think I'm going to tell anyone a girl half my size knocked me on my arse? A man's got to have his pride." They didn't need to say it out loud, actually he'd prefer if the thing stayed buried in speculation. Things were cleaner that way. After the bandage was done, Tristan took her hand and was going to check capillary refill in her fingers to assure the bandage wasn't too tight but found a bloodied, ground mess at the tips.
The Medi-Wizard knit his eyebrows for a moment, turning over her fingers and examining her hands before returning to rummage through his bag. "I don't have any, but murtlap essence will take the sting out and promote healing. Here." He did produce a small vial full of a teal colored liquid. "For your throat, you'll be able to breathe a little easier." The blonde's gaze settled on her wand for half a moment before he uncorked the vial himself and held it out for her. "Does anything else hurt?"

Good decisions. Right. That would’ve been funny if it weren’t for the smoke still rising and the burn covering a solid portion of her arm. The shack had certainly sounded like a good decision. And maybe it had been, given what Dani had just done to the place. If that had been her apartment… She really didn’t fancy the idea of being homeless. She probably should’ve been grateful that she had burned up the shack instead, but it was hard to look on the bright side after the events of the last few hours.
The man’s response to her plea almost drew a smile from Dani. Almost. The twitch at the corner of her mouth was small, but it was definitely there. “Well, when you put it like that.” He seemed to mean it despite the joke. And that certainly helped. Dani’s grip on her wand relaxed as he bandaged up her arm. If he was going to make a move, he would’ve made it by now. She almost expected him to stop now that the worst injury was dealt with, but the sight of her bloodied fingertips sent him digging back through his bag. “They’re really not that bad. I’ve had worse.” The last year had given Dani something of a mental scale for injuries – what needed treating right away and what she could live with – and after bone-deep scratches that couldn’t close on their own, some missing skin on her fingers barely even registered. She had to remind herself that normal people didn’t think that way. Mostly because they didn’t collect enough in one night to require a hierarchy.
Dani nodded along to the instructions. She didn’t have any of that stuff, but maybe Meg could swipe some from Theo. Then the man was holding out a vial of liquid. Dani hesitated purely on instinct. Taking the vial would require setting down her wand. And while the healer could easily have overpowered her as it was, the thought still made her nervous. A cough tearing through her throat finally made up her mind. She let go of her wand and reached out to take the vial, holding it up to her lips. The stinging began to ease as the liquid coated her throat. No longer feeling like she had swallowed a porcupine, Dani carefully shifted her burned arm just to see how bad it was. Not good. Not terrible, but not good. Work tomorrow was going to be loads of fun.
What hurt. Everything or very nearly. But the aches of the transformation couldn’t be helped, and the usual bumps and bruises weren’t worth bringing up. Really the only big thing left was her ankle. Dani shifted her leg a bit to draw it closer to her body, wincing a bit as she did so. “I did something to my ankle. I think it’s sprained.” A careful touch of her fingers confirmed that assessment. She turned her gaze up toward the healer. “I can take care of it though. I’ve done it before.” The statement was intended to reassure him. His duty was done. He needn’t feel obligated to stick around. It never really seemed to occur to Dani that people might help someone like her because they actually wanted to. A fact that probably said far more about her than it did of mankind, but there it was.

The more relaxed the woman grew the easier it was to do his job, yes but he also enjoyed it more. Tristan enjoyed the feeling of doing something decent in the world, fixing something that was broken. In a way it was his attempt to atone for his parent's sins, wash away all the wrong they'd done in the world and the wrong ways they taught him to think. Healing grounded him, too. Mudbloods, Squibs, and Purebloods... the spells all worked the same on them. If healing saw no blood purity, neither would he. At least, the was the idea but it was a little harder in practice to toss out years of being groomed to think one way or another. Oh, his parents would roll over in their cell and hospital bed if they saw him caring for a werewolf, of all things.
He wasn't really a fan of the 'I've had worse' ideology, that's for sure. It didn't matter, she might've had worse but she'd never had him as a Medi-Wizard before (if she had, maybe she wouldn't of knocked him over) and he waved her off with a dismissive hand as he rummaged through his supplies. Murtlap essence.. Of all things not to have. He usually carried a steady supply. It was a dead useful little substance, on par with dittany with it's array of uses. At least he had something to relieve her throat and he offered it out to her after uncapping the vial. Her hesitation drew up his eyebrows in surprise. She couldn't still be all anti-trust could she? And after he'd dressed her burn. "If I were planning on poisoning you," he started calmly, voice cool and even "I wouldn't have gone through the trouble of patching you up first." But she did drink it, eventually and then he could focus on other things.
Her ankle was bothering her and that was a relatively easy fix except she was busy assuring him that she could take care of it herself. There was a sarcastic comment on the tip of his tongue but a small part of him took pity on her and he swallowed it right back down choosing something a bit lighter. "I'm a full service Medi-Wizard, I take care of everything from burns to breaks." Sprains too, but it wasn't nearly as catchy. Tristan rolled his wand between his fingers thoughtfully, considering various spells and settling on the simplest and most common one. The limb didn't look disfigured or blue, the injury was likely a clean break or a minor sprain. "It's going to feel hot, then cold and then it will feel better. Episkey!" He pointed his wand at the affected appendage with a flourish and the injury would heal.
With that out of the way, Tristan looked towards the smoke coiling above the shack. "They'll be moving on shortly. I wouldn't recommend you trying to apparate just yet but The Three Broomsticks is close by and you can use the floo network there."
