Brits made good tea, but Gabriel was craving something a bit.. more. Coffee. The Auror needed a good dose of caffeine to help him cope with all the change in his life. He never imagined that his new coworkers would find him anything less than charming, perhaps he'd been insensitive about their dead friend but damn he didn't know the reason the transfer spot had become available, he just thought that someone retired. With his move to London came two brand new currencies. Brits didn't use dollars and cents like American No-Majs did. He'd gotten a hang of the galleon (Didn't the English wizards ever hear of paper money? For god sakes. Who wants to carry around a pocket full of heavy coins?) but pounds? Damn.
So, the tall blonde stood just outside The Leaky Cauldron on the magical side staring down a handful of crumpled pound notes and debating the merits of saying blast it all and Floo-ing back home. He understood things there, they were normal. Maybe he'd been banished to desk work, but people liked him and he knew how to pay for a god damn coffee. Maybe all tihs was a mistake, but how could it be when his intentions were so good? He came to make a difference.. Or maybe it was just to feel important.
Gabriel sighed and ran his free hand through long tangles of blonde, shoulders slumping under a feeling of utter defeat. Being a little bit on the spoiled side, he wasn't so quick to give up on something he wanted. A sad, blue gaze lifted from the bills clutched in his hand and searched the wizards and witches around him, one must have a kind face. He settled on someone who looked like they might help him and headed over while burying his free hand in his pocket. "Excuse me." He thought about calling them 'mate' like he'd heard others do but decided against it. "I can't figure out this No-Maj money.. Can you help me out? I really need a cup of coffee."

It was December. Where had the time gone? Christmas was almost here, and with it all of the memories Dani was trying to forget about. Normally she had the bar to keep her distracted. Or barring that there was Bran. But he was busy with some press thing and Meg would only let Dani hang around the bar for some many hours off the clock before she shooed her off to go get some rest. Or a life. So today Dani had stuffed a sketchpad and pencils in her satchel and found herself a bench near the Leaky Cauldron so she could sketch the people moving past. Diagon probably provided more interesting subjects, but there were also people gossiping about the creature legislation. And Dani could use a bit of distance from that for a while. Besides, there was beauty to be found in the everyday lives of nonmagical folk.
She was halfway through sketching a certain building whose architecture had caught her eye when someone actually decided to talk to her. Dani looked up, pushing her hair out of her face as she did so. She found herself staring up at a young man a few years older than she was. She probably would have tried to help him anyway. Dani was a kind girl despite her quiet demeanor. But something he said grabbed her attention. No-Maj. There was a term she hadn’t heard in months. Not that the accent hadn’t given him away, but still. “You’re American. My mom’s American. I lived there about for ten years.” Not that she sounded like it. A few weeks had brought her British accent back in full force. The corner of her mouth tugged upward ever so slightly as she added, “They call them Muggles here, by the way. Not No-Majs. Weird, I know.” What sort of a word was Muggle? At least No-Maj made sense. A little American maybe, but understandable.
Finding a fellow American had given Dani reason to warm up to the poor guy, even if she did get the feeling he might be a bit full of himself. It was a chance to hear if there was any big news in America. And to hear some of the familiar magical slang again. Dani glanced over at the building she had been sketching before closing her pad to slid it and her pencil into her satchel. She could always come back and finish the drawing later. It wasn’t like the building was going anywhere. “Come on. I’ll give you a hand.” What could it possibly hurt?

Apparently Gabriel was a lot better at this sort of thing outside of the Auror office. The friendly face he picked out did happen to be friendly, and he hadn't stuck his foot in his mouth the moment he opened it. He blinked at the deceleration of his heritage, momentarily thrown off. London was certainly throwing him for a loop but at least that was something he could take in stride. "Yeah." he nodded, frustrated expression easing into something friendlier. "I just moved here. What part were you in?" America was a lot like a bunch of different little countries stuck together. The accents even varied vastly depending on what part of what city you were from. The cultures were even different.
At least they were sort of kindred spirits. The woman didn't turn up her nose at his lack of accent and she found the word 'muggles' weird. "Muggles, right. I keep hearing that term, doesn't sound any less ridiculous." A hint of his normally charming smile crept across his otherwise defeated face. It was hell not even being able to buy a cup of coffee, it may have been his dramatic flare but he felt utterly useless and ineffective. It took a large swallow of pride for him to ask for help at all, luckily his fellow American did not look at him like he was crazy or pathetic for needing help, allowing him to retain a little bit of said swallowed pride.
And she was willing to help him. The smile grew, taking on a note of warmth. "You're my hero. I've had enough tea to last a life time. You know there's even a shop for it?" One day he decided to explore the ins and outs of the new wizarding community he was settling in and found his way to Hogsmeade and right into Madam Puddifoots. "Names Gabriel, by the way. Or Gabe. Yours?"

One thing could be said about Americans – they understood just how big their country was. They didn’t immediately ask if you knew their cousin who lived in Chicago. America was like Europe, made up of lots of different pieces. “I lived in the northeast, up near Canada. But we traveled around a lot. My mom’s an herbologist. What about you? What part were you from?”
The British certainly did love their tea. Although oddly enough, it was Dani’s American mother who was the tea addict while her English father preferred coffee. For all the sense that made. Personally, Dani thought anyone who didn’t like tea just hadn’t found the right flavor. But she wasn’t about to make this poor man feel any worse about himself by informing him of that fact. Instead she just nodded. “They certainly do drink a lot of it. Personally, I prefer the Butterbeer. Have you tried that yet?” The British wizarding drink wasn’t for everyone, but Dani was quite fond of it herself.
Gabriel. He looked like a Gabriel, although Dani couldn’t quite put her finger on why. “I’m Danielle. Call me Dani.” She finished securing her art supplies and put her satchel strap over her shoulder. “And don’t worry about the money thing. It took me a while to get it straight myself. I don’t know why they can’t just use a system based on tens. They do for everything else. So why do they have to complicate money?” Honestly though. The metric system made so much more sense than the American units. Why couldn’t they have carried that logic over to money? Dollars were so much easier to figure out than pounds or Galleons.

Northeast. He dipped his head in understanding. "Same, sort of. I'm from California originally." Where it was warm and sunny and not at all like London. "But I lived in New York for a time, working for MACUSA." The weather was a little closer to what he found here, but still not quite as dreary. It made him appreciate where he came from, it's like the sun hardly wanted to shine in such a miserable place. Maybe it reflected his mood, his inner turmoil at his relocation. With the musing rattling on in his mind, Gabriel tilted his head back to look up at the sky. It helped a little to know that wherever he was in the world, the sky was the same. It might look a little different from place to place, but there was only one sky for the whole entire world. Earth didn't feel quite as big and lonely then.
"I have, actually." he nodded again. While he was a big fan of sugar, butterbeer was sort of a shock for him. "I was expecting it to have actual beer." A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Alcohol, he was definitely a fan of that. Maybe if he was lucky he could find a little baileys for his cup of coffee. That'd surely perk him up. That and his current conversation. If things continued they way they were going then maybe he could make his first actual friend since he'd arrived there. Even better, it was someone who could commiserate with the cultural differences. And the money frustration.
"Dani." The name felt good on his tongue, easy to remember. Brits tended to have a lot of old and traditional sounding names. Harry, Ron, where the hell did the name Hermione come from? Draco sounded straight out of Greek mythology or something. Gabriel wasn't much better, but it was his, damn it. "Nice to meet you." He pocketed his hands as he waited for the woman to put away her art supplies. "What were you drawing?" Normally Gabriel would make some quip about being willing to lend his exquisite good looks for modeling in exchange for a date or something but his ego was sort've bruised and he was on his best behavior. Gabe didn't do well when he felt alone. Tens.. The Metric system. Ugh, another thing he'd have to get used too. His face fell at the mention of it, more adjustments felt overwhelming. "Maybe you could explain it to me over coffee. My treat." If she was going to help him buy it, the least he could do was buy a cup for her too.
