Clay had spent the past few weeks making sure the scar from the bite was covered. It healed up nicely but injuries from werewolves scarred and didn't go away. No matter what you do. He wore long sleeves, which was easy to do when it's winter and freezing out. He tried charms but didn't like how it went. He hadn't told anyone that didn't need to know or hadn't pulled it out of him. Which meant Cass was in the dark. And it would stay that way for a little longer. Right now, Cass was over for dinner. Clay had gone big. Roses placed all over the floor that were now mostly shredded piles because of jinx. The lighting was lowered and candles lit the dining room table. They ate spaghetti because it was probably one of the greatest inventions ever according to Clay. He was going all out and being as romantic as he possibly could because he knew that there was a chance things were going to go down hill very fast very soon. After dinner, he went into his room to change out of the button up shirt he had worn to make the occasion all the more special. After dinner, he went into his room to change out of the button up shirt he had worn to make the occasion all the more special. When walking up to the door back to the living room he saw Cass and Jinx begging to be played with. He leaned up against the door. His left hand insistently covering the scar over his shirt. Merlin, she was beautiful. Clay truly had no idea how he had gotten so lucky. It broke his heart to know that he was hiding something from her but he just needed to make it to the full moon. It was only a few days away and he knew exactly what else was going on that day. But he could take the chance of her seeing like that if she didn't have to. HE didn't even want her to think that him being a full on werewolf if there was the tiniest chance that he just likes his meat raw now. He smiled at his girlfriend from where he stood. It was now or never. Clay took a deep breath first. "Cass, I think I've got to cancel on our date Thursday," he said from his spot at his bedroom doorway. He felt terrible but he wasn't sure what the full moon would bring for him. For them. Cassabelle Blackburn((OOC: you know. A few days before the full moon. Clay's place. Super Romantic.))

They hadn't been together for the longest time, in the grand scheme of things, but Cassabelle was undoubtedly in love with Clayton. It was hard not to love the man. There were a thousand little things and counting that he did, from the moment she met him, that charmed her from the tips of her ears to the tips of her toes. He was bloody handsome, for one thing. Cass unashamedly watched him with a little smile on her face until he disappeared into his bedroom before settling on the floor with Jinx, tossing little handfuls of rose petals in the air for the cat to swat at. He was kind and he was romantic as all get out. And he cooked a mean spaghetti. Seriously, what wasn't there to love?
Jinx was pretty great, too. Cass was so distracted by the playful little kitty that she didn't even notice Clay watching her until he spoke. She turned her head and looked at him with the same little smile from before, but it fell at his words. She tilted her head in confusion at him, tearing at one of the rose petals still in her hand. "But baby...," Cass chewed at her lip as she climbed to her feet and went to Clay, placing gentle hands on his hips. "That's our anniversary." He had been acting a little strange lately...distant?...and now this, but she chalked it up to work stress or something. This new legislation was probably hard on his job, and she felt a sudden pang of guilt for not keeping up with how he was doing like she should have been. She was a busy woman, too, but they always managed time for each other. Always. "What's happened?" In her mind, it obviously had to be something horrible. Like, death-in-the-family level. Maybe Cass was a bit spoiled in the girlfriend department, but Clay wasn't one to just cancel on her over nothing. They had to take advantage of the time they got.

Clay always made sure that Cass got the attention she deserved. She was amazing and he just loved spoiling her as much as he could. Time together was usually planned last minute at odd times of the day. It wasn't easy together and sometimes they had to go quite a few weeks without actually physically seeing each other. Love letters exchanged between them through their owls were very common. Clay went to every game of hers that he could make and when he was there all knew. They had to see each other in weird ways. But not once has Clay ever canceled on Cass.
He pushed himself off the door frame as he saw Cass get up. Clay's hands found their way to Cass's shoulders. He placed a kiss on her forehead. His hands moving up and down her forearms hoping the gesture showed her that he was still there. "I . . . I know," Clay couldn't actually look at Cass when he said this. His head looked down at their feet. He took a moment to look back up at his girlfriend's face. He was trying to read her expression. Was she concerned? That's not what he wanted. He knew for sure that he was upsetting her. He knew that was going to have to happen. It had to. He couldn't think of another way.
"Nothing has happened," he started to explain, "Jinx has to get some shots done. He doesn't do the vet well and Blue unintentionally bullies him. I want to be around so I can keep an eye on the two of them." Merlin, he was terrible at coming up with lies. Cats? Really? He could just owl CJ and ask him to come watch the cats. Which he was doing. Clay had asked his older brother to watch the cats for the night. Told him he was spending the time with Cass. The lies were getting too much. If all of this goes for the worse he has no idea what he'll do. "We'll do something the day after. I promise." He gave a weak smile. It wasn't convincing at all. He was going to have to tell Cass the truth. He couldn't lie to her.

Cass didn't like that Clayton wouldn't look at her. She didn't like it one bit. They'd never had a problem sharing everything and now he seemed like he was hiding from her. Not just one thing, but all of him. And she didn't like it. She ducked her head down to try and catch his eye until he finally looked back up at her. His eyes always gave her the most pleasantly funny feeling in her stomach, but right now it just felt heavy. He knew it was their anniversary, and he was still cancelling. Why?
For cats. Clayton was cancelling on her for his cats. Cass drew her eyebrows together, watching her boyfriend's face for some moments in a stupor - surely, he was joking. But no, he didn't laugh or smile. He couldn't celebrate his anniversary with his girl because he had to take his cat to the vet. Cass clicked her tongue in annoyance, frowning. It wasn't the reason that bothered her. She knew his cats were important to him and she quite loved the furry little beasts herself. "Let me go with you then," she said suddenly, trying her best smile for him. "And then we can hang around here and I can help you watch them. I'm easy, Clay, you know that. I don't need anything fancy. I just want to be with you." She snuggled into his touch, pulling him a little closer. The more he insisted on not seeing her tomorrow, that they would do something the next day, the less she felt like ever letting go of him. That's what was bothering her - not the cats, but the fact that it seemed like he didn't want to see her at all tomorrow. Cass tucked herself under his chin and looked up at him, frowning again. That smile on his face wasn't very Clayton-like at all. "Something's wrong. I can tell. It's not the cats."

If Clay could he would spoil Cass every second of every day. This anniversary just meant more to him than any other night. He didn’t want to just hang about his house. He wanted to take her to a fancy restaurant and make not just himself dress up all nice but have her dress up too. But that couldn’t happen if he was a giant wolf on the hunt. HE knew that there was a fifty-fifty chance of that being a thing but he didn't want to take that chance. Not with Cass. So he shook his head at her suggestions.
He took hold of Cass’s hands and moved them so he was holding them between them. With a deep breath, he let go of her and took two steps backward. ”I don’t want you to worry when it could be absolutely nothing,” he mumbled. He knew he had to tell her but he didn’t want to lie and say it was less than it really could be. Clayton was scared. He needed to tell Cass. Even if it was the last thing he wanted to do. ”I was treating a werewolf on the day of the eclipse,” he started, ”At the time we had no idea what was wrong with the person until much until the papers came out the next day and understanding of the whole day came to light,” his left hand found its way to his right arm. Just on the inside of his arm below where his arm bent. ”The patient bit me.”
He didn’t want to say more. He hoped he didn’t have to say more. He just stood there staring at Cass. His eyes scanning her face for a reaction. He wasn’t sure how he wanted to react. He had no idea how she even felt about the whole werewolf thing. He knew he had his thoughts. Thought it was no big deal to have the registry. Thought it was more helpful than harmful. Thought that it was good for a healer to have that kind of insight on a patient when treating them. He still believed in the last on but he wasn’t sure about the rest. He thought about it all more and looked into the law. It was a lot different than he originally thought.

Cass was perfectly content clinging to Clayton, even if he was acting weird, even if he wouldn't tell her what was wrong. When he pulled away, she pouted, holding onto his hands but then he took those away too. It all left Cass feeling uncomfortably vulnerable. She wrapped her arms around herself, growing cold in the perfectly comfortable temperature of Clay's apartment as he began to speak. When someone told you not to worry, that's all you could really do. What the hell was going on?
Cass trained her eyes on Clayton's, imploring him to speak as he mumbled and paused. Her heart just couldn't take the anticipation and it was beating constricts all the way up her throat. She couldn't talk either.
When he finally started his story, Cass' expression didn't budge. Clay started a lot of stories like that. He was a Healer and he worked with people injured by magical creatures - of course she always worried about him in that regard, but this was like an everything day for him, right? And he was good, Cass knew he was. Clay was smart and more than capable. Cass didn't understand the details of Clay's story like he did. Eclipse...that didn't really mean anything to her. To be perfectly honest, Cass was rather ignorant when it came to things that weren't Quidditch. It's all she had a brain for.
Werewolf bites, though. She knew what that meant. Even the bloody Muggles knew what that meant. Cass' hands flew to her mouth to smother the gasp that tried to escape her. Her eyes traveled down to the way Clay was holding his arm. She couldn't help it; she closed the space between them again, pulling the hand that was covering his arm into her palms. She didn't look at his arm. She just needed to touch him, hold on to him - her Clayton, her same old Clay, nothing different but the teeth marks in his skin.
"Are you...do you...do you change now?" She glanced back up at his face, whispering. Her brain felt like it was stuck on something, unable to catch up with the last few moments of this conversation.

Wouldn't it be nice if this story ended like the rest of Clay's stories? Wouldn't it be nice if Clay's life was just like all those fairytales he has always loved? Unfortunately for Clay, this wasn't as nice as he would like it all to be. He feared the worse and he had no idea where his Gryffindor bravery was now. Honestly, all the thinking and all the researching he had been doing lately made him feel so different.
He was a strong supporter of the Werewolf registry and now, well, now he had no idea what he thought of it. If the werewolf he had been treating was registered or had the information about their condition on their medical records or maybe even if there was just some way he could have known. Then he wouldn't have been put in this situation. At least that is what he thought. But even then he still would have treated the patient. He refused to turn people away. So, in the end, he probably still would have been bitten.
His chest hurt at even more when Cass tried to cover up her gasp. He still caught it and he wasn't sure what it meant. It just hurt him. Clay felt his eyes become glassy. He could practically feel the air shift around as Cass came closer to him. His head dropped once again and he watched the space between them grow smaller. He took this as a good sign. She wasn't going to leave him. Even though it felt like everything has changed. His hand was reluctant to move at first but it left his arm. HIs grip on Cass's hand strong. He didn't want to let go.
Clay's shoulders shrug at Cass' words. He wanted to say no. He wanted to tell her everything was fine and even if it wasn't okay for him to be the way he was if there was nothing to worry about. But his brain had been going a thousand miles an hour for weeks now and he not once said anything. "Maybe," he wasn't confident, something that was unnatural, "Maybe not," he shook his head. He probably was not helping with the whole don't worry about me thing he was trying to do. "Alright," he cleared his head, "when someone who is beaten by a werewolf in human form the gets werewolf sys toms. Meaning that they will crave raw meat, can be more prone to anger, and are sicker around the full moon. They do not turn," He felt like he was reciting his textbooks. "However, on the day of the eclipse so much happened that no one can say for sure. Werewolves, they didn't turn at all but they had the state of mind as a werewolf all day. Even those who took wolfsbane were out of control. I don't know if the eclipse will mess with what we know to be true about the type of bite or if something may have changed." Merlin, he wanted to pull her closer to him. He was just too scared. Not of her but of so many other things. And sometimes fear held people back.

Cass really didn't mean to gasp out loud. She regretted it the moment it slipped through her lips (and then her fingers, useless things). It wasn't a gasp of horror, or even shock, really...she wasn't sure what it was. All she felt was the sudden realization of what Clay was saying whip around her brain like a hurricane-force wind, and then it slipped right out of her. Like the information was so overwhelming she couldn't hold onto it.
She needed something to hold on to, and she picked Clay. She always picked Clay. Cass spent a lot of time in the air, body and mind, and Clay was the one solid thing that always brought her back to solid earth. She grabbed at his hand and tried to squeeze away that look in his eye. He let her have his hand, and he held on too, but he looked hurt. Cass had no idea how to even begin talking about this, but she could make him not hurt. Couldn't she? She needed to.
She was about to tell him to forget she even asked, it wasn't important right now, but he finally spoke. 'Maybe' was not the answer she expected. To Cass, this sort of thing seemed pretty clear cut. You were either bitten or you weren't, you either changed or you didn't. Luckily, Cass wasn't the Creature Induced Injuries Specialist here. Clay had an answer for her, it just took him a bit to get to it. Cass listened very closely, watching his lips as he spoke, running every word through her mind a second time just to be sure she heard it. Honestly, she loved when he talked smart. If the situation weren't so personal (and terrifying) she might have thought about letting him know that, little grin on her face as she went in to kiss him. Instead, she was too busy trying to figure out if her boyfriend was a werewolf or not.
Well - that was that. Cassabelle was always a pretty practical person; Clay didn't have a clear-cut answer yet, but it was clear-cut for her. He might turn, he might just crave raw steak on their date nights now, or maybe nothing at all would happen. It was clear to Cass that it didn't matter what happened, not to her. She loved Clayton. "Okay. I understand. So, we'll know on the full moon?" She still wasn't too clear on all the details, but those were nothing. She ran her hands up Clayton's arms, gingerly over the bitten spot, and clasped her hands behind his neck. "I'm going to worry about you regardless, so not telling me what's going on is a pretty silly way to try to get me to stop doing that." She did grin then, just a little bit. "But, Clay? I'm going to be right here, worrying about you. I'm not going anywhere. I don't want you to worry about that."
