Transfiguration was by far Donald’s worst subject. The 13 year old just couldn’t figure out why he was so bad at it. The young boy was very good at charms and other such magic but transfiguration was a complete disaster for him. Was there something wrong with his magical aura? Was it his wand? Or was there just something wrong with him? He sighed deeply. It was something that puzzled him and something that he was determined to change.
To this end the Ravenclaw had decided to use the empty classroom to practice his transfiguration magic. The third year would not do anything that complex, at least not at first; he considered switching spell but had a funny feeling that could go badly wrong. And trying to change a pin cushion into a hedgehog was out of the question. The last time he tried that the results where....well, they were messy. No creature deserved to suffer like the abomination he managed to create with that. It still gave him nightmares, and don’t even get him started on the horrors that resulted from the time he tried to turn beetles into buttons!
No, it had to be something relatively simple and straight forward. At least he hoped it would be straight forward. He got an orange out on his pocket and placed it upon the table. He had a several oranges, grapes, apples and various fruits and vegetable with him if truth be told. They were important for the magic he was about to practice. He knew he needed help with this kind of magic but the last person he wanted to ask for help was his sister, Amy, he really didn’t want to give her something to have over him. That would leave him at a massive disadvantage. In all fairness to his sister she did offer to help him and promised not to hold it against him. But the spiky haired lad let pride get in the way of that offer.
The pale skinned boy focused hard on the object before him as he took out his wand. He pictured in his mind what he was going to do and concentrated hard. The Welsh wizard was going to try the hardening spell on it. He desperately hoped that it would work. Well he couldn’t really think of anything that would go horribly wrong with it in any case.
Taking a deep breath Donnie aimed his wand. This was it; this was the time of truth. ”Duro” he spoke as he did the motion and aimed. The orange started to harden slowly IT IS WORKING! he thought to himself rather excitedly. It was short lived. Soon the orange started, instead, to wobble before suddenly exploding. Covering the entire room, Donald included, in orange juice, bits of orange and orange peel.
Why did I fail.... he thought rather despondently still soaked with the remains of what was an orange. He didn’t feel like trying any of the other fruit now though. It would only make the room messier and he didn’t fancy making a fruit salad. He just sighed miserably.

Aje was scouring the castle. His scarf was missing, one that his little sister had made for him when he remarked how cold it was during his first winter in England. Scarves weren't commonly made things in Nigeria as the weather rarely called for more than a light jacket so it meant especially a lot to him, even if it was faded from years of use. The former auror grumbled under his breath as he stalked through the corridors, blaming the crime on Peeves. Who else could it have been? Every suit of armor, every nook and cranny on the fifth floor had been searched to no avail.
The large wizard was about to move on to a higher floor when a noise from one of the unused classrooms stopped him in his stomped tracks. Peeves, the cheeky devil! He must be causing more mischief. Aje changed course, heading off to the classroom. If it was the poltergeist then he was going to scold him something fierce until the little devil returned his scarf. He could tolerate a lot of antics, but theft of a sentimental object? That was too far. He barged in without knocking, a spell at his finger tips and he could feel the magic just below his palm ready to be cast.
Instead of a mischievous specter he found a small boy in blue robes. Actually, the robes were blue and orange and the whole room smelled like citrus. He eyed the mess while scratching absently at his chin. It appeared that fruit had been exploded "Confringo is above your year, is it not?" Aje tilted his head pensively. "Perhaps you are trying Bombarda? Is that younger? I am not familiar with the curriculum in the UK."

Donald almost leapt out of his skinwhen Aje Odili burst into the room. Was he in trouble? He didn’t mean to make such a mess. The young boy, with orange juice dripping from him, looked at the Professor with a worried look on his face. The last thing he wanted was to be yelled at by a teacher because of his poor transfiguration work. However the professor didn’t seem that annoyed, at least not from what the Ravenclaw could tell. He silently nodded at the Professor when he asked if Confringo was above him . While he was sure with practice he might be able to pull it off the 3rd year was also sure that if he tried that spell and it went wrong he could get into massive trouble. Bombarda he could do but again. Maybe he should lie to the teacher and say that is what he was doing? But then maybe that would just land him in deeper trouble. He looked at the Professor for a moment, almost looking like he was actually about to burst into tears, but he managed to just about keep his composure. ”I am so sorry sir...” he started apologetically “ ”...I...I apologise so much for making the mess I am really am sorry. I was trying to cast duro, a transfiguration spell and it didn’t work. I am really very sorry sir. I didn’t mean to do it honest....” well so much for Donnie keeping his composure. He started to apologise at length to the Hufflepuff head.

Aje was relieved that when he burst into the room he didn't find a pesky poltergeist, but a student. He was a little uncomfortable with the look on the boy's face, though. Worry or anxiety maybe? Whatever it was, he preferred when children looked happy. Childhood was such a precious gift and was too short to spend it being distressed. He often felt a little slighted in the childhood department, giving up his own to take care of his siblings when his father died. When he went to school things did improve, but he always felt that obligation and like the more innocent and carefree times of his youth had been unfairly occupied.
The small one confirmed that the first spell he had in mind was above his ability. When the child reached the verge of tears, Aje held up his hands in a pantomime of surrender, to convey that he came in peace. "No, no. You do not apologize, magic is very messy." Especially when one was learning how to control it. Personally, the professor felt like he had a close connection to magic. It was more personal for him, preferring to cast it with his hands where he felt like he had greater control. It was more natural and gave him a broader understanding. "And lucky enough there are spells to do the cleaning." The wizard's lips relaxed into a closed lipped smile at his own show of humor.
One part of the overdone apology did catch his ear, though. Duro and transfiguration. His school was known for Transfiguration and Aje was highly skilled in the branch of magic. "Duro is not a Transfiguration spell, it Is a charm. You are not changing what the orange is to be, you are enhancing it." His newly developed Professor-Mode kicked into gear, even though this wasn't his subject he found that he liked teaching and would hardly pass up on the chance to do so. Aje stepped over to the boy, practically grinning with glee. "There are four types of Transfiguration. Do you know them? I will give you the first one, vanishing." He waved his hand, palm up, over the boy to vanish the orange pulp from the Ravenclaw. "Because you take something and make it not exist. You change what it is into nothing."

Donald stopped his apology spree when Aje Odili held up his hands as he realised that, yet again, he had been apologising way too much. The Welsh boy however did bit his lip he was still unsure if he would be getting into trouble or not for what happened. It was a honest mistake though. Maybe the Professor would understand. However, to the relief of the 13 year old the Professor didn’t seem that cross with him. A small sigh of relief left the young boy’s lips. The youngster nodded when the Professor said that there was cleaning spells. He supposed that he probably could try and cast a cleaning spell to sort out the mess that he had made. Maybe, but perhaps not. His confidence was slightly knocked by his failed spell casting. It did trouble the Welsh wizard to learn that Duro was not a transfiguration spell. He frowned slightly. Donnie was pretty sure that he read somewhere that it was transfiguration spell. The pale skinned youth felt that charms were one of his strong suits and he felt even more disappointed that he struggled with one of those spells. Still he supposed that he was only a third year and he could not expect everything to come to him as if by magic. Although he could not help but wonder why he thought it was a transfiguration spell. Maybe that implied to him that it was something more psychological about his trouble with transfiguration rather than something about his own magical ability. That was something that the Ravenclaw boy decided to contemplate a bit. He felt a bit unnerved by the gleeful grin from the Professor however the Ravenclaw lad still listened carefully when the duelling professor talked about the different types of transfiguration. It was something that he learnt in first year and read in books. Still he listened carefully to the teacher as he said about the vanishing charm. Donnie flinched when the Professor waved his wand at him, wondering if he was going to punish him somehow for the mess that he had made. However all the Hufflepuff Head had done was to vanish the orange pulp from him. The pale skin boy gasped slightly. While he was still use to magic it was still something that was pretty impressive. ”I couldn’t even begin to try transfiguration like that.” he said half awestruck half forlorn.

It was puzzling to him when the boy flinched, Aje found himself to be very gentle but he supposed his large stature made it harder for people to see his true nature. It had to make itself known in it's own way, no one believed a well muscled giant when they told you that they were really very friendly. It would seem insincere. "No, I do not think so." he agreed with a nod. "Europeans view vanishing as advanced magic not suitable for the younger years, but where I come from we do not view it so. I could turn into a badger by age fourteen." He shrugged his large shoulders dismissively. "But most adult wizards here cannot even do that. The educational differences are very strange to me."
He examined the boy for any missed signs of orange pulp, but did not find them. Aje was satisfied with the job that he did. "Vanishing, I think, is one of the easier parts of transfiguration. You do not create, like conjuring." To him, making something into nothing was less complicated than making nothing into something. He flourished his hand over the desk to create an orange colored ball. "It is the closest i can come to replacing your orange. Do you know why?" As good as he was at Transfiguration even he could not create edible things from nothing. Gamp's law or something.
His professor mode was on a roll and he ran with it, settling his large frame into the desk's chair. "Why do you think you cannot cast Duro? Maybe because you thought of it as transfiguration and not a charm? Magic does not like to be confused, but it is very forgiving. You should try again, this time a charm." he nodded towards the ball, which was already quite soft and squishy. "If you explode this one, it maybe won't be so messy!"
[Hey! Sorry it took so long and it was a lil short, but I did want to remind you it's completely unnecessary to tag me in the thread if we're the only posters in it. I'll see the reply, no worries!]

Donald found it interesting as the Professor said that they learnt vanishing magic by the age of 14. He felt awestruck. Such transfiguration magic was well beyond him. If the Ravenclaw boy was entirely honest with himself he still struggled with basic first year transfiguration magic, yet alone third year magic or even more advanced. A wave of shame washed across the youngster. Why was he so inadequate?
It didn’t really help Don’s self-esteem when the Professor said that he felt that vanishing was one of the easier parts of transfiguration. The lad knew that it would be something that he could struggle with. Even if it was meant to be easy.
He watched as Aje created an orange coloured ball to replace the destroyed orange. The pale skinned boy looked thoughtfully as the Professor asked if he knew why he could not create fruit and after a while he decided to nod. “It is Gamp’s law of elemental Transfiguration. You cannot make food out of nothing.” he was pretty sure that he was correct with this. The young boy might not be good at the practical side of the transfiguration but he did feel he had a very basic grasp of the theory of transfiguration.
A rather sheepish look came across Donnie’s face again when the Professor said Duro was a charm and transfiguration magic ”Well, I remember reading it was transfiguration somewhere....” he said rather embarrassedly. He nodded when the Professor directed him to try it again. Maybe know he knew it was a charm his confidence would be a bit better.
The Welsh Ravenclaw pointed his wand at the ball and concentrate. He versioned the orange ball hardening in his mind. This time he could do it. He knew he could do it. He knew he will do it ”Duro” he said moving his wand in a motion. The ball shook a bit and did get slightly less soft but it was still rather soft. At least it didn’t explode this time he thought to himself rather glumly. It looked like even when he knew it was charm magic and not transfiguration it didn’t help. This update Don even more though, he felt Charms was his subject.
