Animagi
Definition: an Animagus is a witch or wizard who can transform into an animal at will. This is a learned skill, rather than a hereditary one, and requires intense training and skill.
Other facts about Animagi:
- The witch or wizard does not choose the animal they become; their animagus form is a reflection of their inner traits and personality.
- Animagi are required to register with the Ministry.
- The purpose of becoming an Animagus is often one of concealment and disguise.
- An Animagus doesn't need a wand in order to transform, but can do so at will.
- Each Animagus has distinct marks that reflect physical traits they possess as humans and allow them to be more easily identified.
- The theory of Animagi transformation is taught in third year, but actually becoming an Animagus is not taught at Hogwarts; the process is lengthy and challenging enough that, while it can be taught while at Hogwarts, it is more typically learned after graduation when the witch or wizard is more advanced.
Site rules: For acceptance as an animagus directly from the character application, your character must be 25+ years old (and possess relevant experience or interest in the field). If you have a character younger than that who wishes to be an animagus, they must seek out a mentor and roleplay the training to become an animagus.
Legilimens
Definition: a Legilimens is a witch or wizard who can invade another's mind by using Legilimency.
Other facts about Legilimens:
- The most basic skill of a Legilimens is to detect if a person is lying, and read their thoughts, emotions, and memories.
- A more skilled Legilimens can influence the thoughts and decisions of their victims, and, in rare cases, even possess them.
- Legilimency is an extremely advanced form of magic, and requires a great degree of skill and practice to perform.
- Legilimency is not taught at Hogwarts.
- It is easier to perform Legilimency when eye contact is made.
- The incantation to perform Legilimency is "Legilimens", although an advanced spellcaster can perform the spell nonverbally and without a wand.
Site rules: For acceptance as a proficient legilimens or occulumens directly from the character application, your character must be 25+ years old and have completed the relevant study. We can accept less talented legilimens and occulumens as a young adult, and those who are younger (16-20) should seek out a mentor/teacher and RP learning it, much as in The Half-Blood Prince.
Metamorphmagi
Definition: a Metamorphmagus is a witch or wizard who can change their appearance at will.
Other facts about Metamorphmagi:
- Metamorphmagi are born, not made; the ability cannot be taught or learned, but is one that a person either possesses or doesn't possess at birth.
- The ability possesses a degree of heritability, as some Metamorphmagi transmit the ability to their children.
- Metamorphmagi can change into a multitude of different forms by changing age, sex, and features.
- Metamorphmagi have the potential to change their appearance to become entirely identical to another person, or to simply change pieces of their appearnce.
- The transformation does not require a wand or potions to take place.
- The appearance of a Metamorphmagus can be be influenced by the Metamorphmagus's emotional state; traits such as hair color and facial features can alter based on the inner state of the witch or wizard.
- These abilities are particularly useful when disguises or concealment is necessary.
Occlumens
Definition: an Occlumens is a witch or wizard who can prevent the invasion of their mind by a Legilimens.
Other facts about Occlumens:
- Occlumency is an advanced form of magical protection for one's thoughts.
- The most basic form of Occlumency involves clearing one's mind to prevent any thoughts from being detected.
- A more advanced form of Occlumency involves clearing the mind only of the thoughts, emotions, and memories that would contradict what the Occlumens wants the person invading their mind to believe, thus allowing the Occlumens to avoid detection of Occlumency and allowing deception to take place.
- Occlumency is one manner in which to resist the influence of Veritaserum.
- Occlumency requires a great deal of emotional and mental control.
Parselmouths
Definition: Parselmouths are individuals with the ability to speak Parseltongue, which allows them to talk with snakes.
Other facts about Parselmouths:
- The ability to speak Parseltongue is a hereditary ability.
- One of the earliest known Parselmouths is Salazar Slytherin, and it is suspected that modern-day Parseltongues are his descendants.
- Parseltongue sounds like a hissing sound similar to the sounds a snake makes and can therefore not be understood by people without this ability.
- Parselmouths can impose their will on snakes to an extent.
- Beginner Parselmouths have to be face-to-face with a snake or snakelike object in order to speak Parseltongue; more advance Parselmouths can speak it at will.
- The ability to speak Parseltongue has long been associated with Dark Wizards, although this reputation has been proven at times to be undeserved.
Site Rules: Parselmouths, due to the origin of their talents and their hereditary nature, will only be accepted in those who can make a reasonable argument for it.
Seers
Definition: Seers are witches or wizards with the ability to see into the future with their Inner Eye.
Other facts about Seers:
- The Inner Eye is a hereditary ability, but one that doesn't always pass down; having a Seer for a parent doesn't mandate that the parent's offspring will certainly be Seers.
- Seers make prophecies that are then recorded and stored in the Hall of Prophecy in the Department of Mystery.
- True Seers are extremely rare and, as such, people claiming to be Seers are often doubted.
- Centaurs are Seers, but their type of Divination differs from human Divination.
Site rules: Seers must have a history of the Inner Eye in their family; while it does not have to be direct (for example, your parent does not have to be the one to have it), it is necessary to be accepted. We will not be accepting Seers who spout random prophecies 24/7, please.
Wandless
Definition: Wandless magic is the performance of magic without a wand.
Other facts about Wandless:
- Wandless magic is extremely difficult to perform and is very volatile; as such, it is only to be attempted by the most skilled and disciplined witches and wizards.
- Children manifesting their abilities often accidentally use wandless magic, which is why pre-Hogwarts spellcasting is very much at the mercy of the emotional state of the child; this magic is almost always unintentional.
- Some cultures, such as Native American and African regions, always practiced wandless magic.
- Hand gestures can be utilized by the Wandless witch or wizard to help guide their spell.
- Elves and goblins perform magic without wands; as wands are known to increase the focus and potency of a spell, this is an enforced wandlessness that is highly contested by some goblin factions.
Site rules: Wandless magic is very difficult. As such, we will not be accepting individuals under 21 years of age with the ability. Up to age 26, the wandless magic must a) be rudimentary, as they are still studying it, and b) have a good background - e.g. a very talented student, history of a mentor, et cetera. You may, as with other abilities, RP training for Wandless magic.
The easiest course of action to apply for one of these abilities for your character is on the appropriate line in the character application. However, if you feel that your character would have one of these abilities and did not include it in the character app, please copy and paste the code below into a reply and an Admin will review your request.
Please note that these abilities are rare and will therefore be monitored across the site to ensure that there's not an excess of these abilities among the magical population; we would request that you limit the number of your own personal characters that have these abilities. If the ability is superfluous or unreasonable, it may be denied. Languages, magical or otherwise, do not count as a magical ability.
