There used to be a picture of a very happy, smiling Remus in his desk. It didn't quite match up with the broken man he'd met on the elevator at first, but he saw that man sometimes. A lot of the times, when they were together and especially when he was with his children. They were moving pretty fast, but his line of work was not for those who liked a slower pace. They were fighting back against the darkness and sometimes people lost limbs or their life, it made one appreciate the time they had and he wanted to make the most of it. With a third wizarding war looming on the horizon he didn't have the time to slow down and take things at a different pace. Plus, he was smitten and love drunk. If one asked, Gabriel couldn't quite put his finger on any one quality about Remus that he found so attractive, it was the whole package.
Gabriel arrived early to work this morning. He'd been arriving early and leaving late almost every day since he arrived and stuck his foot in his mouth. The blonde auror was determined to change people's perceptions of him, that he wasn't serious about his work. He belonged here and he loved every moment of it but he'd made a terrible first impression. He tried too hard, desperate to be liked and it blew up in his face. The office seemed to tolerate him as a whole, but no one was particularly warm. He tried to understand it, but it wounded him deep down. As confident as he seemed, Gabe was a sensitive and insecure man who needed people to like him. Remus liked him and he liked Remus and that was something. His early arrival also had an ulterior motive this morning. No one else was there yet when he strode over to his desk and carefully removed a framed photograph from his bag and set it up on the desk. It was the two of them together and while Remus wasn't smiling quite as brightly as he had been in the photograph that had lived in his desk drawer, they both looked happy.
People had personal items on their desk, so the picture wasn't really out of place but it was his first bit of personalization in his otherwise stark and organized workspace. Placing the picture meant something to him, that this was different. His past relationships had all been light and fun, but he didn't care enough about the people he was dating to want to see their face and reminders of them throughout the day. The tall auror sat down at his desk with a little smile on his face. He was happy and it showed, even as he reached for his quill to start on some unfinished paper work from his arrest the night before. He hummed a cheerful little song and beamed at his parchment. People filtered in to start their day and he would occasionally look up and nod a greeting.
He worked steadily on his paperwork, 'til he felt a pair of eyes on him. The feeling came from the direction of Meadow's desk. He didn't really get along with Meadows, while most tolerated him she seemed hell bent on pretending that he wasn't there. The smile on his face dampened a bit and he shifted uncomfortably under the gaze but was very determined not to meet it and continue with his task. Time wore on and he could feel the tension in the room between them. With a huff, Gabriel set down his quill and ran a hand through his long blonde hair, bracing before he looked up at the woman. Her eyes seemed to be not on him, but the picture on his desk. He looked down at it and back up to his coworker before very politely asking "Is there something I can help you with?"
