The Wizarding World was about to be turned upside down, Gabriel could sense it. Every day it became clearer that some No-Maj's were up to something. He and Remus were investigating on the side which honestly was getting a bit exhausting. There was no time to unwind from his job protecting the denizens of wizarding London. He went from aurorship to investigating No-Maj's and back again, although working with Remus their relationship a fresh, exciting angle and made him fall a little bit more in love with the man every time they got together and counting down the moments 'til their next meeting when they were apart.
Currently, Gabriel was lazily patrolling a lonely offshoot at the back of Diagon Alley. Many of the shops were out of business and the street felt practically deserted. The sun went down and the whole place felt creepy. Not quite as bad as Knockturn, definitely not as sinister. Gabriel didn't pay much attention to said creepy feeling, too distracted by a different, more pleasent feeling that had lingered long after Gabriel and Remus' last goodbye kiss. Their relationship just made him happy all the time, which meant it was very easy to miss the subtle spine tingle and gut feeling that told him he wasn't as alone as he thought he was.
The blonde meandered down the cobblestone street, whistling a songless tune. His wand was carried loosely at his side, obviously relaxed. Gabriel was only patrolling to check out some reports of loitering and vandalism, likely a couple of young kids (anyone younger than him was a kid, thanks.) blowing off some steam. Everything seemed to be going alright and he was just about to move on to a more lively road when he passed by the mouth of a particularly dark alley. He was clipped in the shoulder by a very weak and dull red light. His wand gave a half hearted stir but remained firmly in his hand.
Normally he would respond to such an attack with a reflexive stunner spell but Gabriel had a personal rule against shooting off spells into an unknown darkness and the disarming charm, if that's what it was, was so pathetic that he couldn't be sure it was even an attack and not a stray from some sort of duel. "Lumos." the blonde commanded with a looped flick of his wand. He lit the alley up, revealing a young girl who couldn't be more than a year out of school. This felt unbelievably awkward. "Oh, uh.. Hello.. um.. Did you just...were you trying to disarm me or something?"

Cassidy was so desperate for something, anything...that it was very easy to ignore the slight, gnawing doubt that that something brought her. She really didn't know what this 'something' was...but it was something she could do to help her brother, something that gave her a little purpose - and Cassidy was desperate for it.
It wasn't like she was hurting anyone. Not really. People were hurting her brother, though...and that needed to stop. Cassidy needed to be able to protect him, and other people like him. And these people she'd met, the people who sent her down this alley today, they could help her do that. That's what mattered.
But if she was going to help them, she needed to practice. Cassidy preferred many other magical arts before spellcasting. It was too loud and too quick for her liking. But if magic was going to protect her and protect her brother, so be it. She would become the best damn spellcaster in England. So she practiced. She'd gone to Diagon Alley with the intention of making her way down to Knockturn, where surely people 'practiced' magic on one another all the time and no one really cared...but she lost her nerve at the first leering grin and turned right back around. She eventually wandered into a rather abandoned part of Diagon - and there she waited.
There'd been a few other people down here earlier, dirty looking things around her age, and she'd cajoled (read: bribed with bets) a few of them into practice. When her money ran dry, though, so did they. Cassidy wasn't ready to give up on today, though, so she waited in the growing darkness for someone else to come along. Someone she could surprise. Her newfound comrades were really pushing that point on her for some reason - that element of surprise - and Cassidy wasn't the most subtle of individuals.
From a shadow, Cassidy watched the new arrival to the alley. Such a pretty boy obviously did not belong here - Cassidy thought this meant he would be easy to take down. Being so new to this whole super-subtle ninja assassin thing, Cassidy did not note that the man was carrying his wand, or that he had quite a bit of muscle on him. She just saw a target. In true ninja fashion, she moved her wand slowly - just a bit too slowly - and whispered a disarming spell - just a bit too quietly.
She almost missed her target entirely, and the light her spell emitted was hardly enough to break the shadows around him. Cassidy swore under her breath and then squeaked out a much louder swear when the alleyway was suddenly flooded with light. She was spotted. Mission abort.
"Uh...whoops?" Oh gods, this was awkward. Cassidy wasn't good at playing dumb - but she couldn't reveal herself. She may be a shit ninja, but she definitely knew not to trust random strangers in alleys. "Sorry. Just...practicing. I thought I was alone. I was aiming for...that." She pointed to a trash bin behind the man. It was physically painful for Cassidy to lie like this, to make herself look so incompetent - but the less people knew what she was up to, the better. That's why she was here in the first place, practicing with miscreants rather than Jas or someone.

At least the awkwardness was mutual. Neither of them seemed quite sure at what to say, how to ask if he'd been essentially attacked. An attack on an Auror could be a pretty big deal but honestly.. To call that spell an attack would be an insult to dueling. It was weak and it almost felt reluctant, like it was cast out of stubborn obligation and not a true desire. Gabriel kept his wand out, because it wouldn't be the first time someone so young and unassuming got the better of him, but it stayed loose and relaxed by his side.
He turned his blonde head to see the actual intended victim of the spell, a poor old trash can that looked like it might've seen better days. "It's a good thing you were practicing." The auror quipped, refocusing his attention on the brunette. "Because that was terrible." If Remus were around he would've made some sort of jab about Hogwart's educational standards but not to worry.. he tucked that jab away for when he would tell the older man about it later. Anything to play up school rivalries. ("Don't they teach actual spellwork at that fancy castle of yours?") "I've seen my fair share of shoddy spellwork." His tone was light with amusement, lips curled into a cheeky, close-lipped smirk.
He was definitely going to laud Ilvermorny's superiority over Remus' head for this. Definitely. He could move on but it didn't really feel right to leave someone so young alone in such a shady place. "Is that why you were practicing in the dark?" Gabriel asked with a curious tilt of his head before he tucked away stray strands of blonde. "You know.. As an Auror I'm pretty proficient with that spell." He dropped his title pretty casually but Gabriel watched carefully for her reaction. "I could probably help you so you don't have to hide out in an alley when you practice."

Although it was working perfectly in her favor, Cassidy bristled at the man's evaluation of her spellwork. She didn't like being bad at things. At the same time, she knew she wouldn't be good at everything, and normally that didn't bother her. But here was some...some punk...insulting her competence. Some guy who's wand she had just almost stolen. Y'know, if she'd been a little better at aiming her spell...and casting it correctly...Cassidy huffed, more at herself than the man, and crossed her arms over her chest. "That's why I'm practicing."
In the dark. Practicing in the dark. She, she looked suspicious, but Cassidy had just as much right to be here as he did. She didn't have to explain herself to him. Yet - he didn't seem like he was going to move until she did. And, apparently lacking the spellwork to make him move, Cassidy was just going to have to talk. This was much easier to lie about, anyway. "I needed the space. My house is cramped. And I-," Cassidy was about to explain further when what the man said next shut her right up. Literally, she pulled her lips in between her teeth and shut all the way up. He was an Auror. Did...did she have the right to be here? Cassidy was suddenly feeling very nervous.
But she wasn't in trouble. The Auror, he was offering to help her. Cassidy matched his careful expression for a moment, trying to find some physical manifestation of why on Earth an Auror would help a random alley girl practice spells. She really could use the help... "Well, you are easier to hit than the rubbish bin." Cassidy relaxed slightly, into a smirk mirroring the one on the man's face earlier. She stepped a little away from her shadows and uncrossed her arms, hanging her wand halfway in the air. "Go on and prove it, then, if you're so 'proficient'."

Some punk, indeed. Little did either one of them know that their lives were going to go crashing into each other and this punk was going to become a big thorn in her side. Or vice versa. But for now, she amused him by getting so indignant at his teasing. "Gonna need a lot of practice, at that rate." He said while looking back at her alleged target, the trash can. "A lot." Could she hit the broadside of a barn? When Gabriel was done with her she would be able to hit any side of a barn. "And you're in the dark so people won't see who accidentally accosted them?"
The blonde nodded along as she tried to explain away her presence in the alley. He couldn't really empathize with a crowded house, living alone and all. His own home was comfortable and while he adored Remus he was satisfied with having his own space, for now. Later on things might feel different. Anyway, Cassidy was hit with the 'auror effect'. The one that made one clam up the moment they learned they were talking to someone from law enforcement. It was universal, he'd observed it in both No-Maj and Magical communities.
"You think so, do you? That's a lot of confidence for someone who's failed to disarm a trashcan." Gabriel teased as stepped away from the safety of her shadows, challenging him. Bold little thing for someone who just badly botched her own spell. He only offered to help to keep her from lurking in dark dangerous alleys, practicing spells but he was starting to like her already. Cassidy had a certain spunk that he could admire. Gabriel stood relaxed and grinning confidently for a long moment, building the suspense. Suddenly he gave his wand a quick, controlled flick forward, casting a non verbal disarming charm to separate the girl from her wand in a brief flash of scarlet light.

"If I can ever get back to it, that is," Cassidy said, raising a pointed eyebrow at the man. There was no way she could get any practice at all if they were just going to stand here and chat all night. She shrugged as he guessed at the other half of her suspicious behavior. "I'm a busy woman. This is the only time I could get practice in." She raised her other eyebrow this time, hoping to make it absolutely clear to this guy what she'd rather be doing other than talking to him.
Cassidy regretted every lie and snap she made at the man once he revealed he was an Auror. Acting like a brat was stupid on her part - she really needed to be more careful now. She also really needed help with her spells...and who better to learn from than an officer of the Ministry? Refusing his help would probably even look sketchy, considering where they were and what she was doing before he got there, so...Cassidy tried to relax and stepped out of the shadows. "Got your attention, though, didn't I?" She shrugged at him again, grin spreading across her face. He made it easy to relax, anyway. Cassidy crossed her arms and watched him as he played up his demonstration - and then, suddenly as that, her wand was out of her hand. He hadn't even said the spell! They started learning that at Hogwarts in her sixth year, but Cassidy never really got the hang of it. Neither did most of her classmates, really. This guy didn't look too much older than her, either. He was, admittedly, pretty damn proficient.
"Pretty good," she said, giving him a nod. "Give me my wand back so I can try again."
