Donnie had always felt upset since he heard about the plight of the house elf. The 13 year old could not understand why an entire race of creatures would be happy in, what he saw as, slavery. How could anyone like doing work for nothing and being mistreated and abused in such a way? It made him feel so annoyed to think of the poor house elves being kept down and oppressed. It was probably due to their lack of education, that they were told that was their lot in life and that is that. Not given a chance to advance beyond themselves or experience anything other than work.
The youngster had been vocal about his views on this, probably boring anyone to brink of tears when he went off on a tangent on this issue. However, the Ravenclaw seeker had decided he should do something more about it than just complain to fellow wizards. He wanted to do something more about it, he wanted to play his part in the liberation of Elf kind from those who would subjugate them.
If truth be told, Don had never really met a house elf not really. He read about them and their position in books. His sister had urged him to talk to the elves and get their point of view on the situation but the Welsh lad dismissed her. He didn’t believe that the house elves understood their situation enough to have an informed position on it. How could you know that the experience you were having wasn’t right if you didn’t know of any other experience to begin with? At least that is how he felt about the situation.
He was slightly worried that he might get in trouble for this. What he was about to do was probably against the school rules. Although he didn’t think he was about to do anything back and he certainly wasn’t going to do anything extreme. It wasn’t like he was going to plant clothes about for the house elves to try and trick them into freedom, or some other underhanded scheme to get the house elves free.
No, what he thought was the best way to do it was to educate the house elves about freedom and their rights, to encourage them to work together to fight for better rights and to get people to sign petitions and letters to the Ministry and the Headmaster calling on them to treat the poor house elves better.
The Ravenclaw seeker entered into the kitchen carrying a bunch of leaflets which he proceeded to hand out to the house elves. The literature was written to be easy to understand and was simply pointing out that they would be asking for money in turn for work, or have some days off or not be pushed about by other wizards as much. ”Here….” he said to a house elf as he pushed a leaflet into their hands ”Take this….”, ”Freedom for elves.” He ignored the less and enthusiastic reaction he seemed to be getting. Donnie had expected nothing less.
