Still officially married but no longer together || Heterosexual |
APPEARANCE
Played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (link)
DESCRIPTION: Graham is of average height and weight. He has a board jaw-line and sharp features. His eyes are blue and look always tired but alert. While he is lucky to still have a thick mop of hair, his half long blonde hair is starting to grey at some parts. But this is more obvious in his beard. During his golden days, he wore his hair short cut. With his life falling apart, the once proud man neglected his body. While he always used to be well dressed and show off his rich status, he now wears work robes. They'll get torn anyways, what is the point of wasting money on stuff that gets destroyed anyways. He is covered in scratch and bite marks from the werewolf attack, not even his face was spared. He has tried magic to cover it up but some cursed scars are too hard to hide. His lower left arm barely has any unharmed skin left. This was the arm where he had his dark mark. The werewolf first bit in this arm, ruining the image for the first time. It was also flayed and burned so he no longer has the mark (he lost that honor, the dark lord did it himself). He always wears long sleeved clothing even in summer to hide his disfigured arm. I'm going to mimick the scars from this pic on other photos I'll add to his signature
PERSONALITY
POSITIVE TRAITS: Runes, Charms, Gaining Information, Strategy, leadership qualities, ambition, determination, cunning, thinking things through before acting, planning, keeping authority, keen to do what he thinks is right, quick learner never accepts the first answer
NEGATIVE TRAITS: Short temper since he became a werewolf(even when he tries to control this to maintain his manners), not restrained to use unforgivable curses and other dark magic for the sake of his family, attracts bad luck for some reason, can be really rude to those the thinks are not worthy for this world. Easily falls into blaming himself and loathing himself(mostly the werewolf part of his), seems cold and distant at first sight.
LIKES: Sitting at the fire place with a glass of whiskey while his wife is knitting and Kalli is playing peacefully, his family, exploring new knowledge and magic. honor, making a difference
DISLIKES: Being disrespected/ having his pride hurt, naive people, seeing his loved ones in danger, having to wait a long time, most magical creatures especially werewolves, the full moon.
HOBBIES: He used to be found of studying new magic and the old runic language. However he has no more time for such privileges as hobbies.
GENERAL PERSONALITY:
Graham often is very silent and doesn't talk much unless he is asked to. This is because he often was told to do this. It was a form of respect which he kept using during the years. Often a man who first thinks about what the consequences are before handling, he is a strategist and an excellent planner. Or at least this was how he once was when he still had the time to think without being under pressure all the time. Even when Graham can appear cold and harsh at first sight, his intentions are good. He’s a very loving father and friend and tries to keep his circle small so he cannot be betrayed easily. Being betrayed by the people he loved has made him wary of everyone. The amount of people he trusts can be counted on one hand. Graham feels tense all the time, as if if he stops paying attention to his surroundings, someone will stab him in the back. He is very much aware of his position of former Death Eater (traitor) now werewolf. The latter he hasn't quite accepted yet, Graham was always a proud man and he is utterly embarrassed about his condition. He was always the kind of person who'd call werewolves filthy inhumans and now he ended up being one himself, the creature that killed his parents. He'll do everything to prove that he isn't like other werewolves and will first of all deny to be one.

Character History:
Graham is born the second son of Alberik Avery and Rowina Avery nee Rosier. "Seen and not heard; that's what children should be," is a statement he heard a lot during his childhood. He was brought up in a strict environment but with care. While his parents were blood purists, they were no cruel people originally and treated their children decently. Perhaps a little strict and old fashioned but they did love and supported their sons. Ever since they were young, Alastair and Graham were shown that people were not equal let along creatures. The family had a house elf which Graham wasn’t treating well either (he regretted this in his later years)
While he was more talented and intelligent than his easily manipulated elder brother, he was the lesser favourite kid (mostly BECAUSE he was hard to manipulate). Graham had a mind of his own and wanted a logical reason why things had to go a certain way. So in the beginning the bloodpurist parents had a hard time convincing him. Some things made no sense to him or seemed unnecessary. Both brothers were jealous of each other in some way. Graham was jealous for the affection that Alastair got and the brother jealous of Graham's talents.
1970 the war started, Graham was 8 so he grew up with all the hate and chaos pushed towards him. His brother was 6 years older than him and already in Hogwarts. Mr. and Mrs. Avery were already at the dark Lord’s side as Alberik Avery had been a friend of Tom Riddle during their school time. He was one of the first Death Eaters. Meetings were often held in their mansion of which the little Graham grew curious and often tried to listen. Whenever he was caught the house elf Mimi got the blame. Luckily he learned how to sneak and find clever hiding spots. He didn’t exactly know what the adult world was about but he could feel the intimidating powerful atmosphere.
When he was old enough to go to Hogwarts himself, his brother was already in his last year. Being in the middle of a war, Graham knew not to get involved with others too much. He chose his friends strategically and mostly focused on his studies. Being a serious student, people were eager to have him in their study group. Often his parents encouraged him to make friends with other children with Death Eater parents. However Graham could only stand a few. He was always very picky with who he kept around him.
Girls only started to get interesting in his fifth year. He didn’t quite know how to deal with his first crush. There was this very cute ginger girl in the book club of which he was a member too. Susan Abbey was a Hufflepuff of the same year as him. Graham didn’t know why he felt giddy whenever they worked together but he decided he enjoyed the way she made him feel. What he didn’t know was that she was a muggleborn witch who was taken in by her halfblood neighbors to keep her safe during the war. So even if Graham knew his parent’s wouldn’t be all too happy with him liking a half blood it wouldn’t be a down right disaster. Still to be sure he kept it silent and his feelings to himself.
Months passed and to his surprise Susan approached him, confessing her feelings. Graham who wasn’t a social expert and had no experiences in this whatsoever made quite a fool of himself. In the end they could laugh about it and decided they would try. She brought up a side in him which he never knew. Graham always followed the ruled but now he was willing to sneak out of the dungeon to go to the basements so they could meet and talk (and kiss). His sneaking skills from his childhood finally came in handy. It was exiting and he felt alive.
To top things off, he first became an uncle in 1977 when his brother became father of a little boy named Alec. It was a wonderful time and Graham was eager to meet the little boy. At this point Alastair had already joined the Dark Lord. His parents had informed him that it might be his time soon.
In 1978 when he was only 16 when his parents took him to a Death Eater meeting and slowly was forced and convinced to join the dark side. This was mostly because his parents found out him secretly dating a girl. Who after further expectation by the Avery family turned out to be a muggleborn. His parents wanted to ensure his safety may Voldemort win, which really seemed to be the case at this point. He took part of the ceremony and joined his parents and brother. As final test he had to kill the girl he loved. If he did this it’d prove his loyalty and how far he was willing to go. Graham first thought he was incapable of harming another human being. But once he had slipped the poison in her drink at a date where she assumed he’d eventually ask her to marry him, he was surprised how easy it was. The poison was slow. Spending her last hours pretending he didn’t know what was ahead was the hardest part. She died in his arm as he whispered ‘I’m sorry’. But he knew that from this point there was no turning back. He’d never be pure again now he had blood on his hands. This had a heavy impact on him and he actually grew scared of what his parents and their evil friends were capable of. Out of fear and because he did love his family, he stayed. When he returned to the Dark Lord with Susan's dead body, he received the Dark Mark. He was 17 at this point.
A year later his parents introduced him to Catherine Fawley, a girl one year younger than him. Ironically she was a Hufflepuff too so Graham was a bit wary at first. He really wasn’t ready to stumble in another relationship after what happened last time. The Fawleys still claimed to be pure of blood and the Averys and most of the world believed this lie. However where the Fawleys were neutral, the Averys were Death Eaters. The Fawleys knew it was a huge risk to marry their child to the son of a Death Eater (little knowing that Graham was a Death Eater himself now). However seeing that the Dark Lord was winning they went with it and softly pushed the two young adults to marry. This happened a year later.
The relationship was not one of love. It was purely for alliance. The Averys hoped to draw more pureblood families over to the Dark Lord while the Fawleys wanted to ensure their safety in a reign of the Dark Lord. Their ideals didn’t exactly line up but things seemed fine. Catherine Fawley now Avery was a whole lot different from the soft spoken Susan Abbey. She was quite the fierce girl and mostly decided how things went. If she wanted a room to be purple, then the room was purple the same day. Poor Mimi was quite worn out the first weeks when Catherine moved in. However despite their differences Catherine and Graham found a friendship and slight attraction to each other.
Eventually Graham managed to forget about Susan and started focusing on a life with Catherine. He started his hitwizard training as soon as he graduated. If he managed to claim a position in the Ministry, the Dark Lord’s reign would be stronger. For each pawn placed in a political place, he grew in strength. Catherine wasn’t very fond of the secrets her husband kept from her. She didn’t understand what was so important or why Graham had to be a part of this. However she had no strength to go against him or his family. And decided she’d just pretend not to know the bad things he was doing. If she ignored the thing, it’ll eventually stop existing for them. Graham was starting to become a little jealous of Alastair who now had two beautiful sons. Only at this point Catherine said she didn’t want to raise any children during the times of war. But both had a wish to become parents.
31 October 1981, the war abruptly stopped. The Averys were in panic, they lost. The ministry was hunting death eaters all Averys feared their time had come and they’d all spend an eternity in Azkaban. The Order wasn’t the only enemy. Alberik Avery worked at the Creature control department and loathed creatures maybe even more than muggles and muggleborns. When he sent men to slaughter the cubs of pack leaders, werewolves revolted and waited around Mr. Avery's house for the full moon. The brothers were already no longer living here so they weren’t present when the attack happened. They heard the next morning and Graham was filled with anger but knowing they had to stay low and pretend to live a normal life he could do nothing. He hated creatures (Especially werewolves) from now on. In the meantime he tried to do the same as his brother did: cover up all tracks. Graham had to disguise his dark mark daily and even use dark magic to pass the hitwizard controls. Being a hitwizard himself gave him one step ahead; he managed to destroy files of evidence which would lead to the connection of the Avery family to the Death Eaters.
His brother was taken however but had pled the Imperius Curse and thus been set free.
Life went on and Catherine and Graham finally fell in love and decided they wanted to have children, now their lives were peaceful. Alastair and Juliana Avery got their third child and first daughter: Ashley Avery. At this point Graham couldn’t be more jealous. At least their lives were somewhat stable even if she had to help him get over his traumas. He had a rather good job at the ministry and he was only climbing the ladder. He left the hitwizard office to be a member of the Wizengamot. Their child wishes weren't fulfilled, after two years of trying Catherine still wasn't pregnant.
1986 was a dark year for the Avery family. Juliana had taken her youngest two children with her to visit a high class friend of hers. This family was also supportive of the Dark Lord. Graham hadn’t known about this meeting until he heard of what happened afterwards. His brother’s wife and one of their sons died in a fire. Aurors of the Ministry had come to bring new evidence which would lead to the host family being tied to Death Eaters and it ended in a fight with friendfyre. Only Ashley had managed to escape because she was playing out in the garden with a house elf. This was the first time Graham’s eyes fully opened and saw that war brought nothing good. However as the war was done, there was nothing they could do. If loved ones got hurt through war, then the war was not worth fighting. His brother seemed isolated in this period and Graham and Catherin took in their niece for a lot of moments. Meanwhile their relationship with Ashley (his brother’s youngest child) grew to be more father/daughter than uncle/niece. Another year later they were blessed with pregnancy only to have their dreams crushed by a miscarriage. The loss would always have a hole in their hearts but it mend a little as they still had their niece Ashley who'd become like a daughter to them.
Graham was more excited about Ashley’s first year than her actual father was. He and Catherine went to Diagon Alley to shop for a wand and other requirements for school. They also brought her to the train and waved her goodbye. A miracle happened that same year. Unexpectedly Catherine found out she was pregnant. They were both terrified and happy but luckily everything went well. The child was named Kallisto (short Kalli) after Catherine’s mother. Catherine’s attention drifted from Ashley to her own daughter but Graham’s love and attention remained unchanged. When he suggested naming Ashley godmother of their child, Catherine thought he was joking at first. When she found out he was serious, she was sure he’d lost her mind. Catherine had already promised one of her friends that she could be the godmother but that plan seemed to be ruined now Graham finally spoke his mind (Catherine always had been the one wearing the pants)
That summer Graham knew his brother was going to riot at the 1994 Quidditch Cup, he did not join in. He wanted to cut all ties with the Death Eaters and saw no purpose in this act. At this point he didn’t believe that the Dark Lord would return. Still loyal to his family, he kept the knowledge to himself.
The return of Voldemort took Graham by a surprise. He had no intentions of returning back to war and wanted to focus on his daughter but because other Death Eaters had ratted him out he had no choice but join forces again. This was when the fights with his wife started. Catherine was done with all this stuff and just wanted them to raise their long wished for child in peace. However Graham thought he had to do this to create a safe world for their daughter.
He did what he had to do; Graham went on meetings and joined special task forces. He joined his brother’s mission in fall 1995 where they were sent to steal a prophecy in the Department of Mysteries. Graham (who still worked for the ministry) had smuggled them in and Alastair used the imperius curse on someone from this department. Graham was friends with this person and felt guilty for allowing his brother to do this. They wore robes and masks but still he was scared someone would find out who they were. This mission failed and Graham had to watch his elder brother getting punished. Because he had done his part (luring the Death Eaters into the Ministry) he remained unpunished. This didn’t really matter as the punishment given to his brother hurt him too. It has been his wish to do this in order to prevent their children from having to go through this. And when he saw Alec (his nephew) being forced to join their forces his hopes were shattered. Graham tried to plead with Alastair to stand up for his son but there seemed no other way.
Next spring in 1996 there was another attempt on gaining the prophecy. Averys were put at a lower point and no longer in charge of the mission. This mission was led by Lucius Malfoy who had come to ask Graham for consult as he had succeeded his part of the last mission. Graham had no intention of standing in the spotlights and shared some battle tactics. Malfoy only decided to use a few. This was the first time in a very long time that Graham was exposed in such a big combat since a long time. He’d always done the information gaining, placing listening devices, falsifying documents kind of missions. Now and then he was sent to assassinate but he wasn’t keen on big battles which held risks. Graham preferred to operate solo or in small groups. This was utter chaos. Masked again he followed his elder brother into combat and battled with several of the order members. During the battle he became overwhelmed with all the chaos, death and suffering that he snapped and took a fire place back to a small local pub. He fled during battle, because he was afraid to lose his mind and go crazy like most other Death Eaters. This is something his brother still hates him for as Alastair was one of the Death Eaters to be taken to Azkaban. If Graham had been there, he could have saved his brother.
Graham returned home the next day. He’d broken down in the pub and drank until he could no longer walk. But he knew he didn’t want Catherine, Kalli, Ashley or Alec to see him in this state. Alec was now nineteen but not fit to take after his little sister. Ashley stayed with Catherine and Graham. While Graham tried to convince Alec to stay as well, his nephew only sneered at him yelling it was Graham’s fault that his father was in Azkaban now.
More and more he began to doubt why he even was loyal to the Dark Lord. What had they gained from it? So far it had only destroyed his family. Graham regretted his past decisions, the Dark Lord made him to terrible things and he was close to losing himself in the madness. This was when he started taking secret action against the Dark Lord. He sent several anonymous short messages to the members of the order (at least the ones he had managed to track down) as well as the other enemies of the Dark Lord. These messages contained crucial information on mostly upcoming attacks and plans. At this point he trusted nobody besides his family. He worked on his own and while he did this he went to convince his wife that they should move places. Catherine was furious; her husband was even more stressed and mysterious than usual. She started to threaten to run away with Kalli, leaving Alec and Ashley with him. She claimed that the Avery family would destroy everything she held dear and that they were all evil.
During July of 1997 he heard news of Dumbledore being killed followed by a break out of Azkaban. Graham wasn’t included in any of these events as he was busy with his team’s mission to make the under the imperious curse Pius Thicknesse the new Minister of Magic. This succeeded. Graham had played out all the ministers of magic which came and went since the return of Voldemort. He supported Cornelius Fudge’s denial until he was proven a fool by the Dark Lord’s reveal which resulted in him resigning. With Rufus Scrimgeour he made sure that the man was an easy target for the Dark Lord and that all attempts the new Minister had taken to restore somewhat of peace failed.
At this point he had already decided no longer to be loyal to the Dark Lord. He was still among Death Eaters and used that position to work against them. It was Graham’s original plan to use the puppet Pius Thicknesse to slowly work against the Dark Lord, blaming it on a mind resistance however his plans never made it that far. He was found out by the Dark Lord himself. Fenir was sent to kill the one being Graham loved most: His daughter. The Dark Lord assumed that if he got rid of her, Graham had nothing left to fight for and would become loyal again (after a big retraining session of course). It was the Christmas break of 1997/1998.
Full moon was upon the sky and danger was ahead. Graham was not aware of what was going to happen. He was working in his office on new battle plans when he heard a scream followed by bumps against a window and eventually breaking glass. With his wand ready he ran downstairs and found a beast standing before Kalli and Catherine. It was about to jump and tear the women to shreds. Graham was just in time; he pushed Catherine and Kalli aside and yelled they should flee to Mungo’s. While he was saying this he felt sharp fangs piercing through his left arm, followed by claws tearing his face. His wife and daughter was safe but he was at the mercy of a blood thirsty werewolf. A werewolf he had seen before and even when not in control would probably 100% enjoy what was going on now. Graham fought he sent several curses towards the beast to fight him off. But he was bitten again in his waist this time, claws running over his chest. They struggled and at one point he was certain he was going to die. A part of his upper leg was torn out and devoured by the creature. Graham’s last attempt was to set the werewolf on fire which then fled out of the house. Alone, all he could do was waiting until he bled to death. A shaking squeaking little elf came out of a cabin (Catherine had ordered Mimi to stay there). The Elf who looked as if she were to faint, took her master’s hand and disappeared him to St. Mungo’s. From then everything went black.
Graham didn’t remember his arrival and he wouldn’t wake until after a few days. He had just barely made it and at one point the healers were sure they’d lost him. Closing the wound on his leg was the hardest task it almost got amputated.
When he did wake up he wasn’t sure if he was grateful to be alive or not. Graham who already hated werewolves more than anything was now one. His wife was furious with him for bringing their child in danger and kicked him out of the house. Instead of being at his side when he needed her most, she turned her back and told him to stay out of their lives. She came across as hateful but honestly she was terrified of seeing the after effects on her husband.
And it didn't seem like he was escaping the dark lord soon either. During his recovery, Death Eaters snatched him before he could flee and was brought to the mercy of the Dark Lord. Who put him under the cruciatus curse and eventually flayed and burned Graham's arm. The words echoed in his mind 'don’t think I'm a merciful lord, you only keep your arm because you need it for the tasks I'm about to give you. But you’re no longer worthy of my mark of honor. Squirm pest.' Instead of almost making it to the inner circle be was to be one of the blood hounds, forced to work under the man who turned him. And the worst part was that Alastair knew the Dark Lord planned to have his wolves attack Graham's house. He hadn't done anything to warn his little brother. Graham hated every bit of his new existance; he fought more with the other wolves than that he did what was told. The Death Eaters came very close to killing him because they grew tired of him killing other blood hounds. These months were the darkest of all. His first transformation was with the bloodhounds and unlike anything he ever imagined. The whole time he was in pain and scarred of what was going on. He never had lost control of his body before and it was a terrifying experience. During these months he’d killed more innocent people than he ever killed anything in his whole life. But he had no choice.
He somehow managed to escape when the wolves he was with weren’t paying attention on him and fled. In May he heard news of the Dark Lord being defeated and he felt a weird empty hole in his heart while he should feel peace. Now he had to deal with the after damage. His brother died during this battle, leaving Graham with unresolved feelings.
He lost everything; his job, his status, his family and his friends. Graham decided to take on a secret identity for the time being. Both the remaining Death Eaters and Blood Hounds were after him, either to punish him or to use him to let out their frustration on. Seeing he had ties with Death Eaters in the past; he also is running from the current ministry and members of the Order. While he might have switched sides and betrayed the Dark Lord, he doubts that they’ll see it that way. He is trying to keep contact with Ashley through letters. She’s helping him but he has trouble letting her. It’s a matter of pride. In his eyes he is supposed to look after her instead of the other way around.
Wanting to get rid of the wolf at all cost, he found out that the closest he could get was learning how to master the wolfsbane potion. He was in an ingredient shop trying to sort things out where he happened to stumble across Ashley.
He tried to contact his wife and daughter several times but was often sent away. Ashley consulted Catherine and tried to convince her that she should give Graham another chance. Catherine eventually knew that their little angel deserved to have a father and let them meet several times a week. But he wasn't allowed to return until fully until he would have his life on track. This meant: break all contacts with Death Eaters, master the wolfsbane potion, get a new job and restore his overall reputation. At this point Ashley sees Kallie more than Graham. He only gets about half an hour each week to hug her and read her a bed time story. Now Catherine does it to remind him what he can have if he works hard enough to earn it. She may never love him again but they could at least try to be an as normal couple for the sake of the little one.
