While there were still many in the world who endorsed the Slytherin/Gryffindor rivalry, it would probably surprise most of them to know that the current Heads of Houses were not among them. When it came to Quidditch and House points, perhaps, but otherwise the two of them were quite friendly. They'd bonded over trying to fix the magnificent rift that had opened between their Houses following the second wizarding war and had been comrades in arms ever since. With the exception of the Quidditch Cup. At that point, all bets were off. In some ways, they were very different. Elias had only his parents, sister, and cat, whereas Corey had his entire adorable family. Elias was a façade a mile thick and Corey was very honest and trusting.... but in some ways, they were similar: strong-willed, romantic, loyal. It worked as friends and co-workers, and because one could liken them to the Houses they represented, perhaps there was hope for House unity after all. The two of them certainly hoped so, which was why they had their annual meeting to discuss the relationship between their two Houses. Of course, neither Elias nor Corey were willing to meet in someplace ordinary, like a café.... thus, this year's picnic on the shore had been born, and thus why Elias was carrying a large basket and a larger straw hat. Somehow the hat and his normal sparkling eyeliner worked, though nobody who looked at him could explain how, especially as he was dressed in white shorts and a strangely liquid-looking purple shirt. That was the real magic. Thus accoutred, he stepped onto the sand, instantly taking off his flip-flops and peering around, looking for Corey. Hearing a shout from one side, Elias turned with a large cat's smile for his co-worker and friend. " Looks like we have lovely weather for it," he greeted, adjusting his magnificent hat. " Where would you like to sit?" Corey King

While the Heads of Slytherin and Gryffindor were too weird (see: fabulous) to live their lives meeting in boring old cafes and restaurants, they were also much too rare to die in this sweltering summer heat - so if they were going to have a picnic, they were going to do it somewhere worthwhile. The shore was such a place, with its nice constant breeze and occasional spray of refreshing sea mist, so the shore it was. Corey stood at the line of tide as he awaited his friend and coworker, toes wiggling in the sand. His loafers (never in his life would Corey be caught in flip-flops; not even in his death, actually) were stashed safely away in a canvas tote slung over one arm, schmoozing away next to a bottle of champagne and a tiny cocktail umbrella he fully intended to Transfigure into a full-sized beach umbrella if that blasted sun threatened to get even one watt brighter. He would have glared at his heavenly mortal enemy from behind his sunglasses had it not also threatened to blind him.
Instead, Corey looked down, to check his watch. He turned away from the water to spot Elias traipsing out onto the beach in all his purple glory, basket in tow. Corey smiled and started toward the man to meet him, shouting his greeting ahead of time over the crash of waves. That life-saving breeze whipped around him as he walked across the sand, rustling his loose blue button-up in a pleasant way. It went wonderfully with his coral shorts, he thought - but not nearly as wonderful as that hat looked on Elias.
"It's gorgeous," he agreed as he finally caught up with his friend. "Finally, a break from this heat. I love the hat, where did you get it?" Corey tapped his chin thoughtfully as looked around for the perfect place to lay their claim. He pointed back to the place he came from, a bit further in where the sand wasn't wet from the tide but also not as rocky as the further reaches of the beach. "There? I brought an umbrella if we need shade."

It was a lovely day - almost obscenely so, the sun warm but not too hot and the smells and sounds of the water rounding out Elias' senses nicely. His smile was wide and genuine, not the charming grin or the insincere smile that were second nature but the smile of a younger man, one who was just there to enjoy the water and the company. And speaking of company - Elias turned after Corey's shout and caught sight of his friend, hidden behind sunglasses and barefoot like he was, waving in reply. The two of them could have been modelling for a fashion shoot right on the beach, Elias thought with great satisfaction as he traipsed over to meet Corey midway.
"We always pick the nicest spots," Elias practically chirped happily, tilting his hatted head towards the sun. Rather like a large cat himself, he was wont to get languid and sleepy in the sunshine, but right now he felt very refreshed. Raising a hand to his very large hat, Elias patted it fondly. "This little boutique in Bath," he confided, "But I added to the brim." Elias grinned. "I like your shorts," he added as they peered about, and followed Corey's gesture to what appeared to be the perfect spot. "Excellent," he agreed, and started off, bare toes padding through the sand. The feeling was very pleasant, and though Elias was already practically purring, his smile grew. "So, how are the kids?" he asked, tilting his head thoughtfully. "Adorable as usual?"

"Who could expect anything less from the two of us?" Corey remarked with a grin, observing with great glee that the two of them were quite possibly the two most fashionable beach goers in this Very Nice Spot on the beach (not that there was a crowd out here, but still...the two of them obviously had good taste). Corey also observed with glee Elias' hat as he spoke of it, making a note to badger him later for the name of that boutique because he could already just tell it would be right up his alley. He hadn't been to Bath in a while, anyway... "Ohh, very nice. It really gives it that special Elias Touch," Corey nodded, wrinkling his nose in a smile at his very fashionable friend. Seriously - purple. Who else did he know who could pull off such an interesting purple? His smile widened at Elias' compliment, and he spoke his thanks as they took off back down the beach.
"Getting cuter everyday," Corey answered the questions about his children, not bothering to hide the brag in his voice one bit. They were his pride and joy; spending five minutes around the man would make that clearly evident, and as a good friend, Elias seemed to just know by now to ask after them first thing. "Rosemary's trying out for the Quidditch team this year," he also couldn't hide the slight concern in his voice at this, but his smile remained, "And Remy's very interested in this whole walking business. I expect he'll be up and running soon. Ryan is...still a big fan of dirt." Even if he could truly talk about his children all day, Corey consciously limited himself to one update per child, for the sake of his friends' sanity. It was his turn to tilt his head at Elias as he turned and grinned at the man. "How are you doing? What have you done with your summer?"

The two Heads of House together were quite disgustingly cheerful, really. It was a miracle their students put up with them (or perhaps it was just magic)... and Elias beamed at the thought, pleased with himself, his friend and (at the moment) the world. "Thank you," he chirped and bowed with a flourish of his magnificent hat before they headed off down the beach to the accompaniment of Corey's family news.
As always, it was... adorable. Elias chuckled. "Sounds like a handful," he remarked pleasantly. "I'm sure Rosemary will do very nicely. And you're always on hand to watch all her games!" he reminded cheerily. "At least only one of them can fly," he added with amusement. One flying child was rather enough, let alone three. Elias only had room for one cat child in his life right now, and le Comtesse d'Mew did not fly. Just pounce. Elias rolled his shoulders at the question, stopping on the spot to eye their picnic place. "I'm well. I helped my parents repaint their entire house," he admitted. "And they deplored my eyeliner. But my sister likes it, so that's well enough." Elias sniffed. Eyeliner was a great necessity in life, and it was shocking that anyone felt differently.
He rooted around in the basket with his wand hand and sneakily cast an enlargement charm as he pulled the blanket out. Snapping it out briskly and admiring the loud orange spots, Elias plopped down his basket and turned to Corey. "After you," he gestured grandly, and adjusted his hat to underline his point.

Corey's children were a handful, two handfuls really (if only he had three hands sometimes), and he of course loved every second of it. The fact that Elias clearly knew and acknowledged this solidified over and over again why Corey liked the man so much. They were opposites in so very many ways, the whole supposed House rivalry thing just the tip of the iceberg, but he'd been comfortable around Elias pretty much from the moment he'd met him. He was just, simply put, a good person.
And he tried to ease Corey's worries over his flying child, which Corey very much appreciated in this time of his life. "You're darn right. You just watch, by the end of this term I might just be the new Quidditch referee." That was a joke, a painfully obvious one. No matter how much his daughter loved the sport and how many games he would inevitably end up paying intensely close attention to (maybe he should ask Elias to borrow a telescope...), Corey didn't think he would ever understand the sport fully. He just didn't have it in him. He chuckled at Elias' reminder that at least it was only Rosemary flying. "For now," he tacked on, with a wag of his finger. Oh, gods, that was a scary thought. Ryan would kill for a chance on a broom, the little daredevil. Corey dropped the thought before he really had a heart attack, right on this beach. He focused on Elias' news instead, eyeing his friend as he spoke. "Yeah? How did that go? Are they doing alright?" They were reaching that age where asking after a friend's parents started to feel appropriate. Corey's own mother and father were getting up there in age, moving a bit slower than they used to. Corey chuckled again at Elias' eyeliner anecdote. "She's a good one, your sister. If it's any consolation, I also really like the eyeliner." Corey often found himself envious of Elias' confident style. He didn't think he himself could really rock eyeliner anyway, and his husband probably wouldn't be a fan either, but it would be nice to at least have a chance to give it a go...
The pair soon arrived at their spot and Elias spread out a delightfully loud blanket for the both of them. Corey grinned at the other man and proclaimed his thanks for the grand gesture of chivalry (Elias knew how to play on a Gryffindor's weakness, didn't he) and settled in on the comfy blanket, crossing his short legs. He placed his tote bag in front of him and, as an afterthought, dove in to retrieve the umbrella and his wand. With as much stealth as Elias, he turned the thing from cocktail size to beach size, and stuck it in the sand behind them. Satisfied, he reached back into his bag for one more thing - a camera of the wizarding variety. Corey liked to document most of the occasions of his life, a habit he picked up as a young man traveling the world. He looked back up at his friend, waiting for Elias to sit. "I assume you know by now what comes next," he grinned and waggled the camera at him.

The two of them settled in nicely, chatting as if they'd just taken up the threads of a previous conversation without any awkwardness. Elias wiggled his toes in the sand in a wordless expression of glee, liking the texture under his toes, and nodded along at Corey's talk of his children. He really liked hearing about Corey's kids - they seemed to have a very lovely little family, and listening to Corey gush was just like taking a big drink of hot chocolate or something equally pleasant. It warmed the cockles of his heart, if hearts had cockles.
"And let Gryffindor win all the matches?" Elias teased, raising an eyebrow and poking at Corey's knee. "I'm sure. Headmistress Minnie might even go for that." She probably wouldn't. She was notoriously fair, but Elias knew she was a lion at heart. Tilting his head, hat flopping about, Elias chuckled. "For now," he agreed. "You have a few more years on a training broom."
Elias' family was not as adorable as Corey's (well, his sister might be) but they were family all the same. "They seem to do be doing well so far. Mum's spry as ever, dad's having a few joint issues but nothing too big." He shrugged. Aging was not something that he preferred to think about, though he supposed the older he got the more outrageous he could be without question. That was an amusing thought. "Other than their sad lack of taste in eye makeup, they're well. I wonder where I got my impeccable fashion sense from," Elias mused. He smiled at Corey's compliment to his sister and hummed thoughtfully. "Never wanted to try cat's eye makeup yourself?" he teased.
Elias dropped onto the blanket after Corey had seated himself, getting comfortable in a stretched-out, boneless position reminiscent of a sunbathing cat. Adjusting the rim of his very large hat so that he could see his friend, he noted that he was holding a camera, and laughed, turning on his side and striking a modelesque pose. "Is this the part where you say 'work with me, darling'?"

"Excuse me, us Gryffindors are all about doing the right thing, thank you," Corey laughed and attempted to flip his hair, which ended up being more of a bounce of curls that looked more adorable than fierce. He wasn't good at fierce unless he meant it - then his lion's heart beat strong - and he was even less skilled in the nuances of house rivalry. Even when he was a student it didn't make much sense to him. He knew Gryffindors who were cheaters and bullies, and Slytherins who were great friends and helping hands. He reckoned everyone probably had a little bit of each house in them...but to keep up appearances as Gryffindor Head, he of course had to indulge in the occasional teasing of the Slytherin Head himself, who dished it back just as well. Even on this warm summer day, Corey had to suppress a shudder at the thought of his middle child wanting a training broom anytime soon. The way rivalries dictated it, any 'true' Gryffindor wouldn't be such a worried, overprotective parent. And that was all the evidence Corey needed to know the stereotypes were rubbish.
Elias' parents were doing well, which made Corey smile. "Glad to hear it." Joint issues were nothing in the grand scheme of things, right? Corey already found himself getting sore in the joints on some particularly wet mornings, as well. Elias' musings made Corey laugh. "That's all you. Signature Elias. You should start a line." Honestly, Corey didn't think it would be a bad idea. Elias was an academic but he certainly had a creative flair, too. Corey had to laugh again at the thought of himself in any sort of expressive makeup. He just didn't have the face for it. "Maybe in a dark room where no one can see it. No way I could rock it like you do, my fabulous friend."
Fabulous Elias was happy to indulge Corey's picture-taking habit, apparently, making Corey grin widely. "Work with me, darling," he laughed, holding the camera up and snapping a few shots of his friend's pose before leaning over next to him, squishing their heads together (very careful of Elias' hat, of course) and holding the camera up for a picture of them both. Satisfied, he stowed the camera away back in his back. "There. Let Super Important Head of House Meeting, Summer 2003, officially commence." He grinned and poked at the picnic basket Elias brought, wondering what delicacies awaited them inside.

"Sure they are," Elias agreed, eyes crinkling up at the corners as Corey flipped his hair. He was going to get laugh lines, he knew it, but that was a small sacrifice to make. Better laugh lines than a furrowed brow and frown lines, anyways. "All your lions are just little angels." Elias grinned freely, not meaning a word of the sarcasm - some lions were angels, other were not, but so were people from all other Houses and schools. Still, teasing his friends was one of his hobbies, and since they were Heads of House, how better than to tease Corey? Perhaps, he mused as he bumped Corey's shoulder with his companionably, they were even setting a good example. Rivalry should be healthy, friendly, to help their students strive to do better rather than tear each other down, and that's exactly what the two of them did.
He nodded in agreement, hat flopping about, and pursed his lips thoughtfully. "Whatever would I call it? A portmanteau of my names? Some 'star' pun?" Elias brightened. "Oooh, I know. 'all that glitters'." it was tempting, but business wasn't his forte. Elias put the thought to the back of his mind for later and considered his friend's face thoughtfully, tilting his own head this way and that and holding his fingers up like a picture frame. "Well, you certainly don't need any contouring. Your cheekbones are great." He winked.
Elias posed and blew kisses at the camera until Corey plopped down next to him and took a commemorative shot. He beamed at the camera and then bopped Corey on the arm in a friendly manner as he announced their meeting's beginning. "Wait, wait," he said, holding up both hands. "Serious meetings of this sort should not commence without the champagne." he peered at Corey's tote hopefully. "I brought afternoon tea! There should be fancy sandwiches in there. And devilled eggs. And other things." He reached into his bag and started producing the food, which by all rights should not have fit in it. As he did so, he acquiesced and started their usual discussion. "So, how do you think we're doing so far?"

"Every single one of them, little angels," Corey wrinkled his nose, eyes twinkling, and mimicked Elias' grin. They both knew that was downright untrue. Talk of the evils of stereotyping aside, Corey's little Gryffindors were quite disposed to being the opposite of little angels - if his detention records had anything to show for it. But he loved them all the same. How else was he going to enact his fatherly nature if the kids didn't make a bad decision every once in a while?
Corey had advice for good decisions, too, of course - good decisions like convincing Elias to start a fashion line. "Oooh, that's perfect! And literally, everything - covered in glitter," Corey teased, grinning again. He liked the way Elias always seemed to sparkle, actually. The man was a scholar of the stars and the way he seemed to reflect one was all sorts of romantic and fantastical, of which Corey was a big fan of. His love for such things nearly rivaled his love for compliments - nearly. He waved a hand as Elias considered his cheekbones, feigning modesty. "Oh, you." Come on. Corey knew he had great cheekbones.
So he, of course, had to fit them into at least one picture in their little beach photo shoot. When that was done, he was officially ready to begin - and nearly beside himself when Elias reminded him of the most important aspect of their meeting. "Oh, how could I forget!" He rummaged around in his tote as Elias pulled food from his basket, eyeing the wares appreciatively. Champagne bottle finally in hand, Corey set it on the blanket and reached beside him into the sand, procuring two translucent and shining shells. "These will do nicely." Discreetly, hiding both the shells and the wand he slipped from his pocket between the two of them, Corey tapped the shells and transfigured them into intricately decorated, nautical in nature, champagne glasses. He passed one off the Elias with a smile before filling them both with champagne and toasting the Slytherin Head of House.
"You know, I have a good feeling about this year," Corey mused after a sip of champagne, in answer to Elias' question. "Things aren't really getting better in the world at large. We both know that. But I think we've also seen how we can use those things to bring the students together in solidarity. I think I'd be interested in trying to pursue more of that this year. What do you think?"
