A year out from last year's World Cup, and Cassabelle was working harder than ever on her game. Both for herself - her dreams of representing her country in the Cup as of yet unrealized, but tantalizingly close, she could just feel it - and for her beloved Chudley Cannons. True, they never made it very far at all in the tournaments for regional teams, and not many Cannons ever ended up on the national teams in the Cup...but Cass loved them anyway. She knew her people had the potential (or the spirit, at the very least) and with just a little more pushing, they could do great things. She just knew it. Not everyone felt that way. There were plenty of people in the League, from rival players to officials to media folk, who beleaguered the poor Cannons captain - everywhere she went, she felt like. Cass felt more infamous for her supposedly cursed position than she felt famous for her Quidditch skills, and she didn't like that very much at all. Thus, today, she was getting away from it all, heading into Muggle London where people cared none at all about flying broomsticks and Quaffles and cared very much instead about some silly game that involved kicking a ball across the pitch. Ah, the simplicity of Muggles. The Muggles were also somber today, but Cass didn't mind that much either. They'd suffered terrible loss, technically at the hands of people like Cass, and she was mourning with them. Cass was incredibly lucky not to have any loved ones seriously hurt in either of the attacks, but that didn't mean she couldn't mourn. Cass wasn't a big fan of feeling sad, though. Thus when she remembered she had plans to meet up with her friend and former captain Ashley, she kept them. Looked forward to them, even more than usual. They could both use a little cheering up, she imagined - and plenty of coffee, of course. Cass arrived at the destined coffee shop in due time, entering and looking around for her friend to see if the girl had arrived yet. She breathed in deeply the scent of roasted coffee in the air - always such a calming smell - and it drew her to the counter in search of sacred caffeine. Ashley Avery

After the insanity of the hospital attack followed by the full moon, Ashley very much needed a break. Being at home brought arguing with Aunt Catherine, and there was only so much steam she could blow off at Quidditch practice without getting herself in trouble. Besides, this wasn’t the sort of thing yelling or fiercely returning bludgers could fix. What she needed was a day out. A day to just chill and forget about all of the insanity she hid from the rest of the world. But there were really only two people in Ashley’s life she would actually classify as her friends. And since Ophelia didn’t really go out much what with being a single mom and all, that just left Cass. Which was perfectly fine with Ashley. The two girls had bonded at school over Quidditch, competitive drive and emotionally distant parents who exerted far too much pressure. Granted, there were still huge chunks of her life Ashley had kept private. Things like having a werewolf uncle or getting her older brother sent to Azkaban. But as long as things didn’t get too personal, they go along just fine.
Cass was already at the counter ordering when Ashley arrived. (Thank Merlin for caffeine. Some days Ashley was pretty sure she bled the stuff.) The sight of the other Quidditch player brought a one-sided smile to Ashley’s face. The two young women might be fierce rivals on the pitch, but they were equally fierce allies off it. Coffee with Cass never failed to provide a welcome distraction.
Ashley headed up to the counter and nudged Cass with her shoulder. “Hey you,” she said, smiling over at her former housemate. A second barista asked if she wanted anything, so Ashley gave a cursory glance at the menu before ordering a caramel macchiato and a chocolate muffin. With that done, she turned her full attention over to Cass. "I see you finally pulled yourself away from the pitch." The smile on her face canceled out any sarcasm in her voice. It was easy to tease Cass about spending too much time on Quidditch since they were both far too addicted to the game. Ashley couldn't even count how many extra hours they had spent practicing together or sitting up late in the Slytherin common discussing strategies. Just one more thing she liked about Cass. Ashley honestly missed being on the same team as the younger chaser, but the competition had made them both them both that much sharper. And not seeing each other all the time just made these meetups that much more fun.

Black coffee, the dark roast please, was Cass' beverage of choice - its scent infiltrated the air and was simply too much to resist. She relinquished a few crumpled Muggle bills (from her mum's secret stash) from her pocket for the pleasure. Cass draped her arms across the counter as she waited, always taking up too much space for her lithe form but never really noticing it herself. When she felt a bump against her, she turned her head and smiled at her newly arrived blonde friend. "Hola," she greeted, nudging her back. Cass' coffee came out about the same time Ashley put her order in, and Cass wrapped her hands around the warmth of her cup while nodding approvingly of the other girl's choice. That sounded good; she may have to sneak a bite or three of that muffin.
Ashley's quip turned Cass' smile into a grin. She wrinkled her nose at her friend and raised her cup in the air. "Can't have me falling off my-," she caught herself short, casting a glance around. Muggles. Right. Any eavesdroppers probably wouldn't quite understand why Cass would be falling off a broomstick. "My game," she finished fantastically, with a wink. Before she could really miff up until they found somewhere a bit more private to chat, Cass turned most of her attention back to the counter, watching the barista make Ashley's order. She tilted her head toward her friend and eyed the girl scrupulously. "You doing alright? Been a hell of a month, huh?"

Cass caught herself just short of saying ‘broom,’ causing Ashley’s grin to widen. Right, the whole Muggle secrecy thing. Ashley tended to forget about that. Mostly because she wasn’t out around the Muggles much. Between the hospital, the Harpies and Kallie, she just didn’t have a lot of free time. Not that she really minded. But Cass recovered admirably. Ashley’s eyes twinkled teasingly in response. “Now that would be a shame. Who would try to stop me from scoring?” The Canons might not be the best team in the league (actually, to be perfectly honest, Ashley wasn’t totally sure how they were still even in the league), but Cass was a ridiculously good chaser. She and Ashley were a fair match, something that made for great competition.
The mention of recent events made the conversation a bit more serious. Ashley turned her gaze toward the barista finishing up her coffee. She could have easily slid on her traditional Slytherin mask and sold the idea that she was just peachy. But Cass had come from the same house, which meant she wouldn’t buy it. So instead Ashley shrugged. “Tell me about. The hospital’s been ridiculously busy. I’m exhausted. We all are. But I think it’s finally starting to calm down.” She reached out to toy with the edge of a basket of sugar and creamer packs. “I’m ready for this whole mess to be over.” She didn’t really want to talk about the hospital attack. About how she had hidden under a bed with a terrified seven-year-old beside her and a Death Eater’s shoes right in front of her face. It was too uncomfortable. If Cass asked about that day, Ashley would probably end up telling her. Cass was one of the only people she would really feel comfortable telling. But she wasn’t going to bring it up herself. She turned her head to look over at her friend. “What about you? You doing okay?” Not that Cass really had any connection to the whole mess as far as Ashley knew. But Cass was her friend, so she asked anyway.
The barista came back with Ashley’s coffee and muffin. She took them both with a polite smile perfected by years of pretending to care. Her eyes roamed the tables as she turned to face Cass. “Where do you want to go?” The place wasn’t totally packed, so there were still some tables that would offer a little privacy. Or they could take their drinks (and muffin, which Ashley had a feeling she was only going to get to eat half of) elsewhere. Ashley was game either way.

"Oh, probably all the rest of the Cannons." Ah, rivalry. Cass wrinkled her nose at her friend, grinning toothily. She loved the competition, and she loved even more that she and Ashley could talk smack to one another all the livelong day and still be friends at the end of it. Cass couldn't deny that the way many people felt about her team was true, but at least Ashley was witty about it.
With the turn of the conversation, Cass watched her friend carefully, frowning in solidarity with her. She didn't know how the girl did it. Ashley was just as dedicated to Quidditch as she was, plus she was a Healer. How did she possibly have the time? Exhausted couldn't have been a good enough word for what she was feeling, especially now. "I bet. You didn't get...hurt, or anything, did you?" Cass cast a cursory glance over the blonde, no obvious signs of injury that she could see. She probably would have heard about any said injuries, anyway. Injury didn't bode well for Quidditch players. "Oh my goblins, me too," Cass empathized quickly, and dramatically, with a long exhale of air. She was absolutely ready for the world to just get its shit together and get along. If she and Ashley, two rival chasers, could do it - surely anyone could. Maybe Cass' worldview was a little boxed in by her obsession with Quidditch, but still. It made sense to her. She returned to grinning at her friend, waving a hand at her question. "I'm fine, fine. Everyone's cool." None of her family was really associated with the hospital or any Muggle tourist attractions, thank Merlin. Her boyfriend was, but he was thankfully fine, too.
Ashley received her purchases and scouted a place to sit. Cass turned and looked with her, eyeing a table over by a sunny row of windows with no one else really close by. "There?" She pointed with her coffee.

Ashley had to grin when Cass fired back. While the younger woman’s loyalty to her less than stellar team made absolutely no sense, Ashley couldn’t help admiring it. And besides, she loved the banter. “They don’t scare me. I can outrun the lot of them any day.” Ashley could certainly tease Cass about them until the sun went down (and probably until it came back up), but it was all in good fun. She knew what that team meant to Cass, and she would never outright insult them. It was that very respect for one another that allowed them to stay friends while playing for competing teams. (Well, that and Ashley knew the Harpies could beat the Cannons.)
Okay, maybe exhausted didn’t quite cover it. Between Quidditch and the hospital, Ashley tended to spread herself pretty thin. But she liked both too much to give up either, and that enthusiasm tended to keep her going. Besides, caffeine worked wonders. Not to mention she knew a potion to help with tiredness. Or maybe it was just that famed Slytherin ambition refusing to let her to give up. Either way, Ashley always powered on, regardless of what state of havoc her life was currently in. She shook her head in answer to the question. “No. It came a little close at one point, but aside from not sleeping too well for a few nights, I’m okay. I got lucky.” She shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal. And maybe it wasn’t. She hadn’t actually been hurt, just scared. And even most of that she had been too focused on keeping Charlotte safe to actually process the possible danger to her own person. Cass’ dramatic sigh drew a hint of a smile back to Ashley’s face. Sometimes the world was just ridiculous. "Why can't people just behave like adults for a while? Is that really too much to ask?" People needed to grow up. Still, it was good to know Cass was alright, even if she hadn’t actually been involved in any of the chaos of recent events. Ashley felt just a little better hearing it from Cass.
Her friend pointed to a table, and Ashley nodded. “Works for me.” She led the way through the rest of the tables to the spot of sunshine and slid into a seat. Once they were both seated, Ashley narrowed her eyes at Cass and tugged her muffin slightly closer. “You’re expecting me to share this, aren’t you?” Obviously she would. Mostly because she would expect part of Cass’ muffin if the shoe was on the other foot. But she wouldn’t be Ashley if she didn’t pretend to put up a fight.

"Oh, come on. We're nothing if not fast," Cass laughed, throwing in a wink. Truth be told, if Quidditch was a broom race, the Cannons might have a chance. Unfortunately, the sport required a bit more skill than just zipping around the pitch, and that is where the problem lay. "If you would just drop that iron grip on the ball every once in a while..." They might be able to catch up with Ashley, but they wouldn't have a clue what to do when they got there (or maybe the clue, just not quite the skill). The little buggers; and oh, how Cass adored them.
She adored her friend Ashley, too, and was very happy to find that the girl seemed generally okay. She said was okay, but what Slytherin would ever admit when they weren't? Cass made sure to look her over carefully before believing her; she examined the girl's words, too, for anything hidden there. Ashley was candid enough to satisfy Cass, so eventually Cass relaxed back into a smile. "Good; I'm glad you're okay. I don't need any unfair advantage on the pitch." There, that was more their speed. That, and looking upon the world with that especially critical eye bestowed upon Slytherins. Cass shook her head at Ashley's observations, sighing. "I really think it is. Who raised these people?" She smiled knowingly at her friend, that being more of a jab at the pair of them than the world at large. Neither Ashley nor Cass' upbringing had exactly been helpful - but they'd both turned out alright anyway, in Cass' humble opinion.
Cass followed Ashley over to their table, snuggling into the warm sunshine as she sat down and got settled. Her coffee was cooling marvelously, and she sipped as Ashley got settled, too. She grinned at the girl over the lip of her cup when she suddenly got very muffin-protective. "No Bludgers around to protect you now, are there?" She giggled and shot her hand out, feigning going for the muffin much like she would a Quaffle. She wouldn't actually just steal someone's food right out of their hand - she had a proper upbringing, remember?

Cass had a point. Her teammates were fast. They just didn’t always fly the right direction. And when they did, they certainly didn’t know what to do with their target once they reached it. Not that Ashley had any intention of helping them. Quidditch was a competition, after all. “That would sort of defeat the purpose. And if your beaters had better aim, you wouldn’t have to worry about my grip.” A solid hit with a bludger could make even an experienced chaser drop the quaffle if it struck in the right place. Thankfully, while the Cannons beaters were definitely strong, they didn’t have the best aim. “Besides, I seem to remember someone saying she could fly circles around me,” Ashley said, arching an eyebrow. It was a good thing the two of them were a fair match or the slower one would never have heard the end of it. As it was, there was a fairly even amount of trash talking.
The concern was nice. Aunt Catherine had done a cursory check before going off about the dangers of Death Eaters. That was just her way. When she got worried, she lectured. And most of the questions at the hospital had been directed at what actually happened. There wasn’t much time to check in on the individual staff. So hearing that caring tone in Cass’ voice meant a lot. As usual, Cass promptly turned it into a joke. Ashley grinned as the mood instantly relaxed. “Please. You need all the advantage you can get.” Maybe it was the constant teasing that had some of the media convinced the two chasers didn’t get along. But truthfully, they were thick as thieves. Especially when it came to criticizing others. “Seriously. When the two of us are critiquing parenting, you know it’s bad.” Their parents as a rule had been less than no help in bringing up the two girls. (Well, Cass’ dad wasn’t so bad. But her mom definitely made up for it.) It was a miracle they had turned out as well as they had. Although it was also that very upbringing that had made them both into ambitious Slytherins and dedicated Quidditch players. So maybe it wasn’t all bad.
Ashley gave Cass her best irritated glare, even though she knew her friend knew her too well to buy it. “What makes you think I need a bludger?” High class upbringing aside, Ashley was very much a Slytherin with little problem getting her hands dirty. But a muffin, no matter how tasty, was not a hill worth dying on. Even a chocolate one. And no self-respecting Slytherin tipped their hand before its time. She broke the muffin in half and pushed the plate toward the center of the table. Her hand hovered protectively over the plate as she added, “Touch my half, and you’ll become the only one-handed chaser in the league.” But there was a twinkle in her eye. She tore a chunk off her half of the muffin and took a bite. Once she had swallowed that, she asked, “Jokes aside though. How are the Cannons doing?” Cass was the youngest captain in the league, after all. And as her friend and former captain, Ashley was duty bound to offer up what advice she could. So long as it all stayed general, of course. She wasn’t about to give up the weaknesses of her own teammates. But if Cass needed help making the rabble fall in line or wanted to discuss the strategic value of certain plays or combine their brainpower against another team, Ashley was all there.

"And here I thought friends were supposed to help each other out," Cass said in mock hurt, laying a dramatic hand over her heart and ruining the whole thing by not being quite able to drop her smile. She tried not to speak ill of her teammates, even in jest, because really they were trying their best and that's all she could ask - but that didn't mean one bit that Ashley didn't have a good point. Having some semblance of aim was just as important as hitting the ball hard enough, and her lovely Beaters struggled quite a bit with that still. Cass wrinkled her nose up at her friend, poking her tongue out. "That's right. And don't forget it. Fancy a race later?" She raised her own eyebrow, still grinning. Cass wasn't as horrendous a player as her team affiliation might suggest. She was at least average, just young. She matched up pretty well with Ashley in some aspects, and if there was one thing she liked more than teasing the dickens out of the girl, it was competing with her.
Cass rolled her eyes at the thought of advantage, laughing. "Please. Don't let the reporters hear you say that, now. I can already see the headlines: 'Chudley Cannon Cheaters'. It has too good of a ring to it not to lead." Cass considered one of her biggest problems to be the media. She loved seeing herself on the pages of Quidditch Quarterly, to be sure, but the pictures were usually accompanied by not so nice words. Bad for morale, that was. How could her players get better if the people watching were always tearing them down? Cass laughed again at Ashley's comment on parenting, nodding her head and sending curls bouncing. "Seriously seriously."
"Oho, I see!" Cass exclaimed after Ashley threw away her best Quidditch threat, her tone in itself challenging. She placed her hands on the edge of the table and eyed the muffin, looking between it and Ashley's face like she was waiting for her moment to strike. Good things came to those who waited, though, and eventually Ashley acquiesced and tore the muffin in half. Cass smiled and looked up. "Even with one hand, bet I could fly circles around you." She was really pushing for that race. The itch to get on her broom was always there, and it grew whenever Quidditch came up in conversation. Which was pretty much always, around Cass. She took a bite of muffin and chewed thoughtfully while she thought of how to answer Ashley's question. "Not too bad. I've got everybody convinced practice is actually an important event to attend now, at least. Mostly. Now I've just got to figure out what to do with them now they're all there." Cass tapped her chin, formations and charts crowding her brain. There was one team in particular Cass was always eager to scheme about with Ashley. "Got anything good on what Puddlemere's up to lately?"

Ashley couldn't help smiling as Cass' dramatic performance was ruined by her smile. "What do you call all that plotting we do against Puddlemere?" she asked, giving Cass a playful nudge with her shoulder. The Harpies might be good, but Puddlemere was really good. Which naturally made them the team Ashley and Cass talked about most. The enemy of my enemy and all that. The mention of a race made Ashley's eyes sparkle. "Always. Just pick the time and place. It's only fair, since you'll be the one losing." Actually, it was anyone's guess who would win between the two of them. The fact they both won more or less half the time was probably one of the main reasons they were still friends. Neither of them took well to being a constant loser. But they could handle a loss now and then when they knew they would probably be the one winning next match.
The headline was definitely a good one. Ashley laughed along with her friend. "Please. If the Cannons were cheating, I think you'd be a little higher in the league standings." It was true. No way cheaters would hang out at the bottom. Not that anybody who knew Cass would ever suspect her team of cheating. Cass might be competitive as all get out, but she was also determined to win fair and square, damn it. She didn't want there to be any excuses for her domination. She was like Ashley that way. Ashley had no problem bending the rules when it suited her. What Slytherin did? But if she was going to actually destroy someone, she wanted the devastation to be complete and total.
Ashley stuck her tongue out when Cass shrugged off her threat. "Even if you could - which you can't - it wouldn't matter because you'd have one heck of a time catching the quaffle. And you can't win if you can't score. But if you're just really itching for me to remind you who's faster..." She popped a piece of muffin into her mouth with a triumphant smile. Merlin, she loved teasing Cass. Mostly because the other girl could throw it right back in her face. No hurt feelings and no one crying foul. The teasing turned to more serious conversation then. Ashley's smile was genuine with no trace of teasing as Cass briefly discussed the Cannons. "Well, that's definitely a start. I'm sure you'll get them all whipped into shape eventually." It just might not be a particularly recognizable shape. But still.
The mention of Puddlemere made Ashley perk up. The self-proclaimed kings of the league, Ashley was always up for a chance to discuss knocking them off their golden throne. "Not much. They shuffled a few practices because of Stark's dad. There's a rumor they may try to pull her out for a few games, give her some time. But it's not confirmed. Besides, we all know how well that would go over." Adelaide Stark did not sit the bench. Ever. And anyone who tried to make her was in for a telling off the likes of which they had never seen. If anything, the loss of her father would probably make Stark even more ferocious on the pitch. She tended to channel everything she had into the game, much like Ashley and Cass. That attitude had given Ashley a very begrudging respect for the former Gryffindor. She shrugged and put another piece of muffin in her mouth. "That's about all I've got. You heard anything?"

"Good point, good point," Cass finally conceded, winking at her friend and nudging her back. She supposed they sort of had to be pretty darn good, helpful friends if they were on rival Quidditch teams and still scheming together to take down the big guys. They also had to be pretty darn good friends to challenge one another so incessantly and get away with it. That was one of Cass' favorite things about Ashley, really. She always kept Cass on her toes, ready to prove herself. Ashley fed her competitive spirit something wonderful. "I'll make you eat those words, Avery. If you're so sure, how about later today?" The competitiveness in her voice stretched all the way from her wide grin to her arched eyebrows.
Ashley was full of good points today. Cass couldn't help but laugh even harder at her musings about the Cannons and any possible cheating. "Well, there's an idea...," she tapped her chin and looked thoughtful for all of one second before dropping it to grin again. Cass would never cheat. As a former Slytherin she supposed it was somewhat expected of her to bend the world to her will, but such behavior reminded her far too much of her mother and Cass worked actively to be everything Mama Myers was not. The dedication and desire to be the best she couldn't deny from the woman, but by principle she aspired to be half the goodhearted person her father was. Even if it did make her look like a bloody Gryffindor sometimes.
There she was again! Ashley was three for three by this point, always ready to bring Cass' grandstanding challenges back to reality. Cass giggled at Ashley's look of triumph, shrugging and also indulging once more in a bite of muffin. "Like I said," she chewed, "We'll see who's right on the pitch." With that settled - with as much teasing as they were doing, they were bound to have a competition of skill soon enough - the conversation took a turn toward the more serious. Maybe not serious for most people, but for two people very dedicated to their sport, this was the meat of the conversation for Ashley and Cass. She nodded enthusiastically at Ashley's musings. "Definitely. I've got a good feeling about them this year, really. They're certainly shaping up into something." Cass found optimism looked much better on her as a captain than anything else the magazines and reporters suggested she might be.
Cass was happy to see Ashley perk up at the mention of Puddlemere, their reasons for excitement quite different from those of PU's fans. Cass would do just about anything to knock Puddlemere from the top, and she knew Ashley probably would too. Still...there was the matter of Addy Stark, as Ashley quickly reminded her. Cass liked the girl, and it was so tragic what happened. It almost felt wrong to scheme against her and her team right this very moment. "Poor Addy," Cass sighed. She nodded at Ashley. "She needs Quidditch, probably now more than ever. We should do something nice for her." Cass chewed at her lip and stared into her coffee, pondering what two rival players could do for a third. Maybe she would write the girl sometime at least...Leaving that thought to hang for now, Cass looked back up at Ashley at her question, grin returning slightly. "Not really. Just the usual about Wayland. Working extra hard, reaping the benefits, blah blah blah." Cass actually admired the captain of PU, but never in a million years would she let anyone else know that.

It was a wonder Ashley and Cass had gotten as little trouble as they had back at school given how much they fed off each other. “Oh, you’re on. And you’ll be the one eating your words, Blackburn.” With all this talking smack, no wonder the press thought they were rivals. Ashley wondered something what would happen if the Quidditch world ever found out they were actually good friends. Would anyone even believe it?
Cass had a point. The Cannons were definitely shaping up. “Now if we could just figure out what that shape is,” Ashley teased. She really did want the team to succeed, if only for Cass’ sake. So long as they didn’t do better than the Harpies. Although Ashley had a feeling that day was a long way off indeed. If it ever came at all.
Talk of Addy Stark dimmed the bright nature of the conversation somewhat. Cass showed far more sympathy than Ashley felt. “Yeah,” the blonde said noncommittally as she picked at her half of the muffin. She was sure it had been terrible, but she wouldn’t really know. She had never been close with her own father. His death had been almost more of a relief than anything, especially when it was followed by the nightmare of her brother’s trial. She had thought she had lost Uncle Graham at one point, so maybe she could relate on some level.
And then Cass was suggesting they do something nice. Ashley frowned, her nose wrinkling at the thought. “Do we have to?” Addy was still a Gryffindor, after all. And Ashley still had a pretty serious grudge against the house of the lion seeing as it was they who tended to torment those like her the most, even as adults. Cass might have been a Slytherin, but she wasn’t a pureblood. She didn’t understand the full magnitude of what it had been like. What it was still like sometimes. Although she had been on the Slytherin team the year it got attacked, an attack Ashley was still convinced had been orchestrated by the Gryffindor team. Point being, it was one thing to acknowledge that Addy was hurting. It was another matter entirely to actually go make nice. Maybe it was just the way the aurors were poking around the hospital after the attack and casting their suspicious looks at anyone with any form of Death Eater ties. Whatever it was, Ashley was getting tired of always having to play nice. Especially when she felt she had lost far more to this war than Addy. Yes, Julius Stark’s death was sad. But Ashley’s entire family had been ripped apart by the war. Five years on and the Avery clan was still recovering. What was left of it, anyway. And maybe that attitude was a bit cold on Ashley's part, but there it was.
The conversation lightened again as it steered toward Puddlemere as a whole. Ashley rolled her eyes at the mention of Wayland. “Witch Weekly put him on the Most Eligible list again. You’d think he was God’s gift to man the way they carry on about him.” Ashley might have some very grudging respect toward Wayland as a player, but the man himself drove her crazy. Or maybe it was just the way people always seemed to fawn over him. Honestly. The man was good looking, but not that good looking.

It was on, so on. Ashley stepped up to Cass' challenge beautifully, so it looked like there was going to be some broom racing later on in the day. Good. Already, Cass was getting restless from sitting still too long. She loved to talk and gossip with the best of them, to be sure, but she usually needed to be doing something else while doing so - jogging, yoga, whatever. The coffee probably wasn't helping either. Honestly, people like Cass didn't need caffeine - she was pretty much always ready to go. "See you on the pitch," Cass said, crossing her arms and sticking her tongue out, the whole tough-girl thing she always tried to pull off always ruined by proclivity for childish mannerisms and giggles. She couldn't help it that competition was just fun for her. That included smack-talking her own team - she nodded and laughed once more when Ashley suggested the Cannons definitely needed some sort of shape to aspire to now.
Ashley didn't seem so enthusiastic to talk about Stark, and even less so to actually do something for the girl. Cass shrugged it off and smiled at her friend, shaking her head. "No, we don't have to." She took another sip of coffee and glanced out the window, mind still wandering for a moment as she thought of what exactly she could do for Addy, at least. Maybe a workout, or something..."I'll think of something." Her attentions turned back to Ashley a moment later - or rather back to Alec Wayland, the bugger. She too rolled her eyes, hard, when it was brought to her attention that he had yet again been deemed Most Eligible (really, Cass already knew that, Witch Weekly was her favorite magazine and that picture of Wayland was a pretty good one...). "I'm sure we'll be hearing all about that at the games this year."

Thankfully, Cass didn’t try to prod Ashley into doing something nice for Addy. Just another thing Ashley liked about her. She didn’t try to make Ashley into somebody she wasn’t. The older Quidditch player did feel just the briefest flash of guilt as Cass decided to do something for Addy herself. But whatever. “I’m sure you will.” Once Cass put her mind to something, nothing could stop her. It was one of the reason Ashley didn’t worry too much about her friend coaching a team at the bottom of the league standings. Sooner or later Cass would whip her team into shape, and when she did, the rest of the league wouldn’t know what hit it.
Cass rolled her eyes a little too hard when Wayland was mentioned, almost like she was trying to sell an act. “Oh, I’m sure we will,” Ashley agreed drily. But her mind was somewhere else entirely. Was it just her imagination, or did Cass always press too hard when Wayland came up? Merlin’s pants on fire, did Cass have a crush? Surely not. True, it made perfect sense for a younger Quidditch player to admire an older one. But Wayland? Really? Maybe this theory would be worth testing. Ashley shrugged like she didn’t care before adding innocently, “Although the pictures of him are pretty good.” Not that she had actually seen them. But hopefully Cass’ reaction would tell Ashley where her friend really stood.

Tall, muscular and grinning. Alec stood just feet away from the pair of Chasers as they chatted about him. He was in line at the counter, arms crossed and mind wandering before the sound of his name caught on to a thread of his attention and jerked it over. The man tilted his head closer, eyes trained on the ground as he listened to them chat about him. It was true, his picture was in the Witch Weekly again and he was at the top of their Most Eligible list. A strange thing, because he didn't consider himself Eligible. Alec was chronically single and had yet to show interest of romance of any kind. That didn't stop the press from wild speculations. Alec only had eyes and heart for Quidditch, no woman could compare. (Maybe a man could, but he hadn't even entertained that idea.)
Slowly he inched up through the line, person by person 'til it was his turn to order coffee. When he had his coffee in hand ( light and sweet, lots of cream) he headed over to join his fellow Quidditch players, dragging a chair over and seating himself at their table. "Afternoon, ladies." Alec said before taking a long sip of his coffee and peering at the pair from behind the cup. "I doubt you'll hear about my bachelor status at the matches." Alec set down his cup and leaned casually back in his chair. "Or anything at all over the sound of your own frustration as Puddlemere slaughters your teams. Like always." His tone was polite as he spoke with just an edge of smugness. Puddlemere was good and as captain he was quite proud of that fact.
