Graham knew something was off. During his transformation the wolf acted different than usual. Like every full moon Graham locked himself in the tiny old wine cellar he bought from an old muggle. It was located at the outskirts of Godric's Hollow. Actually it was a few kilometers from the village but the easiest way to describe the place. The werewolf that took over Graham didn't cause as much damage as he normally did. Sure he was covered in nasty bruises mostly on his face and shoulders, his nails were broken and fingers were bleeding. There was a scratch here and then but no big bites. Because he was aware of what happened Graham could guess why he escaped. There had been other wolves near by. It was probably the forest but the oddness did strike him. This was the first time he caught the sound of howls since he was a free man. The wolf had been captivated and tried to work it's way out to join the others. Luckily the charmed fortress stood it's ground. It did was clear that the wolf was very eager to get out. Graham felt sore all over but at least this month he got away without any fatal wounds. Still he had some cuts that needed to be closed with dittany and silver or they'd stay open and get infected. Hopefully he could find Ashley and if not, bribe a healer and erase his or her mind afterwards. This time he didn't need Mimi's help. He dressed himself and apparated on his own. Upon his arrival he took the same entrance as he had last time and went off searching for Ashley or just a lone healer. He found one, it was not Ashley but it was enough for now. However before he could even get close she noticed him. Graham didn't get the chance to do his saying. Instead he was told to 'get in line'. If there was something he disliked it was being spoken too in such rudeness. While he could understand people disliked werewolves, he hadn't given any intention of being one yet (aside from the obvious scars). The woman was in a rush but Graham managed to keep up. Just before he could grab her arm, she already entered a big ward. Shit he wasn't supposed to- Merlin be damned. Graham knew this ward like no other. He forgot about the female healer and was completely sucked into what he saw. He once spend weeks in this place. Unconscious, near to death. And here he was again but it was far more crowded than he ever remembered it being. And those wounds, that smell of potions and salves. It was all too scarily familiar. His face was pale and his eyes wide. "What in Merlin's name happened?" He was stunned and shocked. The man spoke before he noticed he was standing in the middle of the ward where everyone could see and hear him. Most were too busy tending patients or fighting for their lives. But he didn't go unnoticed.

If Ashley had slowed down, she probably would have realized she was exhausted. But there hadn’t been time to slow down. Not since the injuries started flooding in shortly after nightfall. Everyone was too busy trying to save as many wounded as they could. Ashley had barely even noticed the sun was up now. But the adrenaline rush was starting to wear off now, leaving behind just a mind-numbing persistence. There wasn’t time to rest. The healers just had to keep going. They could rest when they were dead, as the saying went. Or when their patients were. (Admittedly a grim thought, but it was either be darkly humored about things or implode.)
Most of the action had been transferred up to the appropriate wing at least, although it was overflowing with patients and personnel. Ashley had just come out of a room and was taking a rare second to catch her breath while surveying the hallway when she caught sight of a familiar person standing only a short distance away. Uncle Graham. She had almost forgotten about his own lycanthropy in the chaos of everything else. But now a surge of relief shot through her. He was alive and he was vertical. That was more than could be said for many of the people in this hospital right now. She crossed the floor in a second, her arms coming up to wrap tightly around his neck. The weary hug only lasted an instant. There were people around, people who didn’t know who he was and would wonder why in the world reserved Ashley Avery was hugging him. Not that any of them seemed alert enough to have noticed. Even so, Ashley pulled away almost as soon as she had latched on. But the brief contact had been enough to reassure her. The events of tonight had dredged up painful memories of seeing a battered and broken Uncle Graham lying deathly still in a hospital bed. Seeing him here had eased Ashley’s mind considerably.
There was dried blood coating her hands and part of her robe, so she used her wrist to push away a strand of hair that had escaped her ponytail. She hadn’t had time to stop and fix it during the night. It would’ve just gotten blood in her hair anyway. “Are you okay?” she asked, looking her uncle up and down. His fingers were bleeding and he had a few other bruises. But nothing major. Nothing like the wounds she had seen that night. That was good. She pointed wearily toward the stairs. “Let’s go up to my floor. I'll help patch you up.” This floor was far too crammed for there to be any chance of finding an empty room. Some of the other wards had even been commandeered to make room for the overflow. But Ashley knew the plant and potions floor pretty well, so she was confident she could find a stray exam room to use.

Graham hadn't expected to meet Ashley here. Mostly because he couldn't find her earlier. But here she was and she looked rather worn out (like he was in the position to say such things). She then hugged him which may not be the best action to do in a crowded room like this for everyone to see. Still one could argue that everyone was too busy with doing what they had to do. As he felt her arms tightly around his neck a jolt of pain acceded from his shoulders and shuddered through his whole body. Apparently he was more hurt than he noticed at first. The wolf did slam his body with great force against walls, the headache and giant bruise on his forehead couldn't be denied. He probably broke his shoulders. He hissed in pain but stood his ground. The man was more captivated by what he saw rather than his own pain. He'd gotten sort of used to it. Besides he'd never sent either of his little girls away.
He noticed the blood on her hand, his own hands reached to touch hers just to make sure it was not her own blood. Thank Merlin it wasn't. Graham nodded at her question but his eyes showed he wasn't really there. She pointed at the stairs and suggested they'd find a place where she could heal him but Graham was still staring into the room they were. "No," he said shortly, finally blinking. These people needed her help more than he did, he'd survive a couple of days even with these scratches open, his bruises and broken shoulders. He couldn't be selfish, enough people died because he was selfish. Still his brain couldn't progress it all. It didn't make sense, there were way too many people. Usually it was just one to three people each month. This time the hospital was overflowing. "Ashley, what happened?" His blue eyes shot straight to his niece, he demanded answers.

It didn’t escape Ashley’s notice the way her uncle stiffened, almost as if she was hurting him. And that bruise on his head was pretty nasty looking. Ashley reached up to very carefully touch the edge of it where it wouldn’t hurt much. “That doesn’t look good. How does your head feel?” He might very well have a concussion, which was far more serious than a rather impressive collection of odd bruises.
Uncle Graham reached out to touch her blood-stained hands. “It’s not mine,” Ashley assured him wearily. “At this point, I’m not really sure whose it is.” She had seen so many people in the course of last night that they had all sort of blurred together. Uncle Graham shut down her offer to look at his injuries, and Ashley narrowed her eyes in trademark Avery stubbornness. “You need help.”
Her words barely even seemed to register as her uncle demanded answers about what was happening. Ashley sighed. This subject would be a pretty sensitive one for him. “Werewolf attack. Godric’s Hollow. We’re not really sure how many of them there were, but it was a pretty large pack. There’s rumors some of them might have been on wolfsbane, but it’s not confirmed yet. The hospital was flooded with victims a couple hours after dark, and we’ve been running ever since. I think it’s finally starting to slow down there.” She studied her uncle’s face as he processed all of that. There must be a hundred different things running through his head right now. His head which also happened to be injured. “You really need to let me have a look at those injuries,” she informed him. “All the worst injuries have already been tended to, so anybody who dies now is out of our hands. And you need help just as much as they do.” She very much doubted he would actually listen to her. But Ashley could be extremely forceful when she wanted to be. If she had to bully him into a supply closet and knock him out so she could do her job, then so be it.

Graham blinked in confusion, where was he again? Ashley was in front of him, blocking his view. Was he home? No there was so much noise around him, the sounds irritated his ears and worsened his headache. He turned his head to view his surroundings. Mungo’s? Oh… right, he remembered. Ashely was approaching him Graham automatically arched back when she tried to touch him but his body would only move a little. “I’m fine,” he mumbled an unconvincing lie. It felt as if someone was banging his skull with a hammer from the inside out. When he’d woken up he thought to be fine because there hadn’t been any immediately visible wounds. For one moment he’d truly believed he’d get an easy full moon for once. He cheered too early.
His heart eased a little when Ashley assured him that the blood on her hands wasn’t hers. He sighed in relief. Thank Merlin. He’d personally track down and kill all werewolves involved if one even dared to scratch her.
When Ashley started talking he wasn’t even sure anymore what he expected. His mind had made conclusions on it’s own and he’d hoped by asking they were proven wrong. Instead reality seemed even worse than what he had made up. Werewolves under influence of wolfbane attacked Godric’s Hollow. They were with clear mind when they did this. He should have known. The werewolves that killed his parents had also planned the attack in their human mind. As did Greyback when he attacked the Avery manor and many families before hand. They used their condition as a weapon. Those monsters, Graham had yet to meet a decent werewolf. Lupin didn't count. If that man wasn’t as pampered by his family and friends, he’d surely be a different person.
The more he heard the darker his eyes seemed to turn. He stared at the ground, reading it as if a book was printed there. “I see.” Was all he could say. What was there to say? What was he going to do. The reason why his wolf had acted different was because there were other werewolves near. And they weren’t positioned at the forest side… Graham’s turning place the wine cellar was near Godric’s Hallow. He needed a new spot before people would wrongly connect him with the attack. Not that he’d been seen yet but it was only a matter of time. They’d see him the same was as he saw these terrible creatures. And the fact that Graham felt the urge to kill them all didn’t promise much good.
“I need to help,” he said firmly when Ashley once more pushed to aid him. “I need to… I want to help.” His voice turned weaker and insecure. What was he going to do and for what? Trying to prove that he wasn’t like those fiends that slaughtered these people without hesitation? And who was he going to prove this to? To these people? To Ashley? To himself? The man groaned and started biting his already broken and bloody nails in frustration.

Uncle Graham insisted he was fine, but someone who was fine didn’t pull away like that from being touched. They didn’t hold themselves like they had just been run over by the Knight Bus. “No you’re not,” Ashley informed him bluntly. Why did he have to be so stubborn all the time? Why couldn’t he just let her help?
Maybe telling him what had happened hadn’t been such a good idea. Ashley could see the change roll across his face. He was pulling back now, putting up walls as assessed the situation. Damn it. Of course this would be hard for him. It was hard for her too, and she wasn’t the werewolf here. Then he suggested helping, and Ashley’s gaze softened. She caught hold of his hand to stop himself from making his injuries any worse. “You want to help? Then let me help you.” She shook her head fiercely before he could protest. “The worst injuries are already taken care of, and I won’t be any good for the others if I’m worrying about you. Which I will be if you don’t let me help.” Uncle Graham would do anything for Ashley, and she had no problem at all leveraging that against him. If suggesting his refusal would hurt her was what it took, then so be it.

Graham knew he was being stubborn. Perhaps stubbornness was just impressed in the Avery genes. It could also be his parental pride of not wanting to accept needing the help of the ones he tried to protect. He was aware that they were getting nowhere. Ashley reminded him where his priorities laid. If it’d help Ashley to sleep at night and feel better, he’d swallow his pride or what remained of his pride.
She held his hand, Graham looked at their touch. Her hand still felt familiar even if it had grown from a children’s hand to that of an adult. All he’d ever done was for her and Kallie. “Alright, do what you have to do. However; when you’re finished you’ll take a break and rest. Think about your own health. If what you say is true then they wouldn’t mind you recovering for half an hour. What good is an overstressed healer indeed?” Graham let that settle in with her for a moment before he continued. “There is a cafe in this building right? I’ll pay you lunch, or breakfast whatever it is at this time.”

The notion that helping him would benefit Ashley seemed to finally make Uncle Graham crack. He relented wearily, and a surge of relief washed over Ashley. She meant what she had said. She really would have been worried about him. And apparently he was worried about her too, as evidenced by his insistence that she rest. Ashley smiled a little in spite of herself. “Fine. I promise I’ll take a break. After I patch you up..” She glanced around the hallway crowded with tired patients and staff before pointing toward the stairs. “Upstairs is probably better. I doubt we’ll find a spare room on this floor, and I’d rather not patch you up in the hallway. Besides, I think we’ve wiped the medical supplies clean out down here.” Mass casualty events tended to do that.
Uncle Graham offered to buy her food, and even if she hadn’t been starving (a fact she had only just noticed at the mention of food), Ashley would have consented. Making this seem like a give and take would ease his pride. Although she really didn’t know where the money for food would come from. But if it made him feel better, that was enough. “There’s a tearoom up on the top floor. And food actually sounds really good. Although I don’t really know what time it is either.” They had both had one hell of a night. Food would probably help.

Graham nodded, he could live with this result. "Okay, I follow you. You know this place better than I do," he told her and turned his gaze once more into the ward with all the sobbing patients. He wondered how many of them didn't have wonderful people like Ashley in their lives who'd still stand by them after this. Catherine seemed still doubtful about all this even if it has been some time now. He knew they couldn't stand here all day feeling sorry and guilty so he followed after Ashley wherever she was taking them.
"Good let's go there after you're done." Graham wasn't hungry. It was even more likely that everything would come out again if he tried to eat. He felt sick his insides were still a little shaken from the transformation. However he needed his coffee and a glass of water. If anything he needed to sit down for a moment and make sure Ashley was being taken care of.
