After spending some time flying out on the pitch, something Jasmine had been itching to do since the first day of the summer holiday, she was feeling much better and happier. The air was right where she belonged, she was certain. Nothing compared to soaring just beneath the clouds, wind in your hair. Her day would have continued to be pleasant had she not encountered a rather dour Ravenclaw who eavesdropped on her conversation with a friend about her anxiety over what's gone on in wizarding Britian. The insolent sod had the nerve to interject and the word 'mudblood' was thrown. A punch was nearly thrown also but house pride restrained the sixth year just enough to stomp away without violence although it would have made her feel very good to knock a tooth or two out. Fists were clenched at her sides, trembling from the effort it took to remain restrained as she marched herself right on down to the Transfiguration classroom, pounding hard with one fist before letting herself in. Corey King was Head of Gryffindor, and heads of houses were there to hear about things like this, to listen to stark raving mad rants and pat their students on the head for not hauling off and hitting people who bloody well deserved it. And maybe, just maybe the man could soothe out some of her fear. Her restraint broke the moment she was over the threshold. "Bloody hell! I want to punch someone, Professor King. I want to punch them so much! Knock their smug little smile right off her ugly face!" Ah, she was trembling, fists still at her sides and she paced back and forth in front of the man's desk. "The bloody wanker had the audacity to call ME a mudblood. I didn't even think people called anyone that anymore! If I would've had my broom I'd have beat her with it!" Fear flower children who carried big sticks, for their temper was burning hot and took no prisoners. "I didn't actually punch Gibson. Prat's not worth the loss of points. She'd run sobbing straight to the Headmistress." With her rant done, angry adrenaline filtering out of her system, Jas collapsed into one of the empty chairs in front of Professor King's desk. Her shoulders slumped and she looked down at her hands for a moment. Vulnerability was difficult for her, she was a Gryffindor for Christ's sake. They weren't supposed to be scared, they were lions. House of Bravery and all that. When she looked up she was considerably softer, not gunning for the blood of a mouthy blood purist but genuinely concerned. "People are saying the Death Eaters are coming back and they'll get rid of the muggleborns for good this time. That's not true, is it? It couldn't be true." _________________________________________ Corey King

Not surprisingly at all, Corey loved his work as Head of House. He found it very similar to being a father, Papa Lion over all the little Gryffindor cubs - and when work took away so much of his time with his own children, he definitely appreciated this feeling. He thought his students appreciated him, too, generally - not every kid outright cried for their mummy and daddy their first couple of weeks back at Hogwarts, but he got the feeling that most of them secretly missed that parental guidance and comfort. He knew he did when he was a student, even surrounded by brothers as he was. So, Corey was here to teach and scold and set things straight, yes, but he was also here to guide and counsel. And sometimes, just to listen.
He definitely listened to that knock, ringing out through his office something fierce. He looked up from his desk with a look of mild surprise to find Jasmine Watson barreling into his classroom and office. Well, not surprise that it was her, really - she certainly wasn't the meekest of mice in the castle. Apparently she wanted to punch someone. So much. Punch them so much. Corey restrained his grin beautifully, and it fell immediately upon hearing just why Jasmine wanted to punch someone's smile off. Mudblood. His face reddened at the word, some of Jasmine's anger transferring across time and space to his own heart (though he definitely wasn't going to go around punching any students). "They shouldn't say it; it's a slur," he added, matter-of-fact, to her rant. He wouldn't make Jasmine rat on the girl by asking for her name - that wasn't really the Gryffindor way - but he made mental note of the surname she slipped out, to keep watch for. "What house? I think it appropriate to have a few words with their Head as well." He left the question sort of open ended, in case Jasmine saw issue with that. Corey was strong willed and hardheaded but many of his students were too - it was only right for them to have a say in problems they brought to him.
With a momentary handle on that immediate problem, Jasmine looked spent. "I appreciate your restraint either way, Jasmine. We haven't garnered enough house points for fights yet, hey?" He tried, a small smile on his face, but on top of looking done Jasmine also looked...concerned? Yeah, definitely concerned. Her words were concerning to Corey, as well. "I don't think that's true," Corey spoke candidly, shaking his head. From his experience, kids didn't really like being lied to for the sake of comfort. Corey felt when he spoke honestly and uncensored, his words were more memorable than momentary false comforts. Even if he was a bit idealistic in his beliefs. "There's as much good as evil in this world, I don't think something like that would ever be successful. The only way it could is by scaring you into submission." He raised an eyebrow at the girl, imploring her to ponder this. The biggest weapon the Death Eaters had, then and now, was fear - incidentally, the one weapon their enemies had complete control over. If they all refused to be scared, the power over them was gone.

Professor King said what she already knew. They shouldn't say it. But shouldn't didn't mean much to the sort of people who would use slurs. It didn't make her feel any better or slow her pacing. Speaking of punching, Jasmine curled a fist. "Should say it!" She agreed, smacking her first against her own palm. "But they did and I could------Punch them!" She searched for a better word, something less violent and more mature than punching or beating them with her broom handle but she didn't find it. Nothing else spoke to the current heat and intensity of her temper. It wasn't that she wanted to cause grievous bodily harm necessarily, she just wanted to hit the girl until her frustration and anger died down. "Ravenclaw. I wouldn't expect that from them, too logical to buy into that blood purity rubbish but I s'pose every house has their losers." At least it wasn't stereotypical Slytherins. Ignorance and being an arsehole wasn't confined to just one house.
When she settled down Professor King was practically agreeing with her over the loss of points. Sort of. Not that hauling off and hitting someone who tried to demean you wasn't worth the loss but that the house didn't have enough points to compensate for it. Angry features lightened slightly when she cocked half a grin. "Not yet. But we will soon enough." Jasmine was confident in nearly every area of her life (save for appearance, but what teenage girl was very secure in that department?) including her House's ability to annihilate all the others in the house cup. Maybe when they gained a little bit of a lead she would reevaluate the whole breaking the girl's nose idea.
Something Jasmine didn't enjoy about being a teenager was adults tendency to sugar coat or gloss over things. While Professor King wasn't exactly doing that she didn't feel like he was being completely honest with her, not if he didn't think that was true. "Blimey, sir. Haven't you been reading the Prophet?" Maybe he was hiding his head in the sand. "Death Eaters were responsible for what's gone on in London, and at the hospital. I read this weird paper called a Quiggle or something that thinks they're connected to the Werewolves in that one village. How can you think they aren't coming back?" 'Back' felt like a weird thing for her to say. Going into her sixth year now, she was removed from much of the conflict in the wizarding world having been safely tucked in the muggle one. "I've heard stories about how it was like when they were stronger. Imprisoning muggleborns for allegedly stealing wands from wizards." She tilted her head, fidgeting with a single curl out of nervous habit. "I know there's good in the world, that doesn't worry me. The return of evil does. I sort've like my wand a lot and I could never survive Azkaban, they don't have a quidditch team."

Corey knew all too well how futile it was to try and call down a Gryffindor's fiery temper. Telling Jasmine to calm down would, likely, have the exact opposite of the intended effect. It was that way for Corey, anyway. He hated nothing more than being told to calm down. There were far too many injustices in this world to try and stay calm all the time.
Still, they really couldn't go around just punching whoever they wanted. And Corey definitely couldn't condone it in the impressionable young people he was supposed to be responsible for. "Or," he raised a finger, requesting just a fraction of Jasmine's attention from her current anger - just for a moment. "Or, you could show them that true Gryffindor spirit, and how easily you can rise above such petty things. And then show them what's for later this term on the pitch." He finished with a shrug - take it or leave it. He knew when he was really angry about something, alternatives didn't work on him. He focused and fought until he got what he wanted. But his Gryffindors were as diverse as they were similar - and teenagers, especially, seemed to change by the day sometimes. Who knew what would work, but Corey would keep trying until he found it.
And so it was a Ravenclaw, harassing one of his students. Corey nodded at that; he knew their Head wouldn't stand for such a thing, either. Most of the professors at the school were good folks, really - though nothing else was to be expected of a school run by Minerva McGonagall. "Everyone has their flaws," he agreed with a sigh. "Maybe this will become a learning opportunity for them." Corey would certainly try to make it that way, anyhow. Everything was a learning opportunity to him.
Talk of house points seemed to quell Jasmine's anger somewhat, and Corey felt an ease slip into the smile on his face. "You're darn right we will. And we want to see that Great Hall decorated in red and gold this year, don't we?" Jasmine was a Quidditch player. Combined with being a Gryffindor with a fiery temper, Corey was pretty confident in believing she was probably a competitive person - as was he. To him, there was no better way to render someone's hate and ignorance useless than to shove it in their face just how inferior it was.
And while that tactic seemed to work to at least settle Jasmine down for the time being (no face punching today, hopefully), Corey's words obviously didn't mean much at all when their conversation swerved into heavier territory. He nodded sympathetically at Jasmine's grievances, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back in his chair. "I'm not saying they won't come back," he shook his head. "I have no intention of scaring you, but obviously you're old enough and aware enough to see that their presence will probably always be in this world; definitely in my lifetime, probably in yours, too." He sighed. "I just don't think you need to worry about it ever being like it was again. Really. No Azkaban for you. The world is changing, Jasmine. Werewolves - perfect example. With all that's going on with them, even with how scared the papers try to make you of them - there are people out there trying to protect their rights. Good people. That kind of thing didn't happen when I was a kid - there's a growing consciousness in our world." Corey paused once he realized he was rambling, dropping his forearms onto the desk and leaning on them with a light smile at Jasmine. "I guess I'm just trying to say, the same thing would happen for muggleborns, if it came to that. It's not as easy for one dark idea to have as much influence these days."
