The last of the students filed away down the ladder as Ryuu put away his supplies contentedly; it had been a long day, but he was starting to become confident in his ability to teach so many bright minds. Although it was clear that a high percentage of the student body was skeptical of Divination as a whole (surely due in part to the last Divination professor, who was apparently now in the Canary Islands), they seemed to be warming up to the subject and their new professor marvelously.
Late afternoon sun turned the little tower room cheery and bright as Ryuu trotted about, clearing things away. The last professor had left something of a mess up here, heaps of papers and half-melted candles and chipped teacups everywhere, and it had taken a solid week to air away the strange, musty smell that had sunken into the curtains. He'd replaced broken crystal balls with new ones, stacked interesting books on the shelves, and added a few little touches of his own, and as he surveyed his progress he couldn't help but feel a little smug. Now this was a Divination Tower to be proud of.
It was also, he thought, sufficiently pleasant for meditation. Sixty-five years of practice told him that peace and quiet was all very well, but nothing could come of trying to meditate in a dungeon, no matter how tranquil. The correct surroundings were important, and this airy tower room with its sweeping views of the Scottish vista would certainly suffice. Folding himself up into a position that didn't look possible for someone so old, Ryuu closed his eyes and turned his thoughts inwards. Ah, serenity.
Unfortunately, it only lasted for a moment. Somebody pulled on the trapdoor rope, and the ladder clattered noisily back down to the floor below, followed by the sounds of climbing feet. Inwardly sighing with regret, Ryuu opened his eyes to face the visitor.
