Dani was late. She hadn’t been sleeping much lately between the recent full moon and worrying about the new Ministry legislation. It was only a matter of time before they decided to ban people like her from Hogsmeade altogether, and then Dani would be up a creek with no canoe. (Technically the expression was without a paddle, but her mom had always been given to tweaking it when things were particularly problematic.) Apparently her body had finally reached its limits because she had slept straight through her alarm. Not too far, thankfully. But far enough. She could only pray the owner of the Three Broomsticks hadn’t decided to stop by today. Meg had the day off, so there wasn’t any chance of her coming up with some rubbish excuse like sending Dani to mail a letter for her. But maybe Dani would get lucky and no one would be around yet to notice.
She tugged on her clothes in record time and pulled her hair into a ponytail before apparating to the back door of the Three Broomsticks. Maybe nobody was in yet. It wasn’t technically opening time, after all. And it was rare for there to be anybody besides the bartender around when the place did open. Especially when all the upstairs rooms were currently empty. Dani was still doing up the buttons on the blue plaid shirt over her tank top as she pushed open the back door. Most bartenders might tend to dress a little on the edgy side, but Dani liked her jeans and button-up shirts. Partly because it drew less attention from the creepy drunks. And since this place did as much business with school kids as adults, nobody seemed to mind.
With her eyes on her last few buttons, she didn’t really notice where she was going. A set of shoes entering her field of vision gave her just enough warning to draw up short before she ran straight into someone. “Sorry!” Dani looked up in surprise, but the face in front of her wasn’t familiar. The man was old enough to be her father. And the scars… Dani’s eyes widened as she got a good look at them. She had seen scars like that before - on her own body. “You’re…” A werewolf. He had to be. True, those scars could be from something else. Or maybe he had survived an attack without getting bitten. But between the scars and the all too familiar haggard edge to his features, somehow Dani just knew. She wasn’t really sure what to do with that. On one hand, the only other werewolf she had ever met had been the one that attacked her. That made this a little terrifying. On the other hand, she knew what it was like to have to live with lycanthropy. And Meg never would’ve vouched for him if he was dangerous. Right?
“…the new guy,” she finished awkwardly. “Meg mentioned you had started.” Dani hadn't been in the last few days herself. Meg had taken the shifts, a combination of covering for Dani after the full moon and needing some space from her brother still being under house arrest. Merlin’s pants, Meg! Did she know what he was? Surely she would’ve said something if she did. And not everyone would understand what those scars were. Most people probably just took them as battle wounds from the war. Come to think of it, the man did looked pretty beaten down. That was enough to tug at Dani’s heartstrings. Her hands had been wrapped around the satchel strap stretching diagonally across her chest, but now she uncurled her right hand and held it out. “Dani Carson. I’m the other bartender.”

Graham still couldn’t quite believe he actually had work. Paid work. People work. Sometimes he’d just wander around, having to take it all in for a moment. What a change this was even if he’d never imagined himself working in a place like this. Graham was early, he didn’t really have a place to go so he’d better come here and freshen himself up. Mimi had brought a clean set of clothes from the Avery mansion which he dressed himself in before handing his old set to the elf.
“I see you tomorrow Mimi. Watch over Kallie and Ashley for me and take care of yourself,” he said with a smile. The small old elf nodded. “Yes, master Avery,” she said to which Graham shook his head. “How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that. Please stand up and look me in the eyes.” Mimi was usually quite found of Graham especially as he actually treated her as somewhat of an equal which was very different from the other Avery males. However as she was the one who collected him after a full moon (and sometimes stayed in the same building during the transformation) and the most recent one had been only a few days ago, she tended to be a little scared of what he would do if she made a mistake. She’d seen the wolf and was scared of it. “Ahh! Mimi is sorry, Mimi is sorry! Stupid Mimi.” The elf started looking around for things she could use to hit herself with. “No, Mimi!” Graham pulled a lamp from her hands. “Don’t hurt yourself,” he waited a moment thinking of how to get this through. “That’s an order.” Mimi may be treated well but she still wasn’t a free elf. Graham needed her and didn’t dare to let her go. He trusted her and didn’t want to hire anyone else. He did give Mimi a little money so she could buy things for herself but technically she was still in service. “Okay, ma- sir… Mimi is sorry.” Graham sighed and dismissed the old elf.
The man turned to the mirror and bit his lip. His hair was combed his beard was reduced to proper stubbles and he wore a pair of clean robes. But his scars were still there which bothered him each day. Even a good clean could not erase his story from his face. Graham turned away, he still couldn’t gaze upon mirrors for too long.
He left the bathroom, still in thoughts he almost ran into someone. He just managed to stop in time and apparently the other person too. He gazed up and saw a woman he didn’t know. Which was often more a good sign than a bad sign. “I must apologize too, I didn’t mind my surroundings either,” he said with a calm smile. However that smile made a quick turn when she started talking again. It were not the words that alarmed him, it was the look in her eyes. They hold the same look as he’d seen before when people figured out what he was. She couldn’t have, not this soon. Not only based upon his appearance. Unless she knew exactly what these scars meant and if she knew he would draw assumptions as well. Only those who worked closely with werewolves(healers, hunters etc.) or those with werewolf scars themselves should be aware. Graham’s blue eyes narrowed as he bit the inside of his cheek. Darn this couldn’t be. He didn’t want to lose a job where he hadn’t even made a full week. All he could do was keep his face in check. So he turned it into unknowing curiosity during her pause.
When she finally finished her sentence he nodded. “Yes, you’re correct,” he said with a nod and could smile again when Meg was mentioned. Meg was the definition of kindness. He was so grateful for this chance that she gave him. The world needed more people like Meg. One way he’d repay her kind actions only he hadn’t decided how. The best he could do was protect this place with all his magical strength while working here. The young woman introduced herself. “Ah yes, Meg told me a little about you. If I remember correctly the two of you are rather close,” he started and accepted her handshake. “Graham. I look forward working with you.” Despite being out of it for years, Graham was a born businessman and he still had it. Be kind to colleagues and customers no matter what you may think of them. Even if he didn’t quite have an opinion about Miss. Carson yet.

Things got a little better after Dani’s awkward pause. Hopefully she hadn’t spooked him too much. But the man seemed to just move on, smiling a little at the mention of Meg. Dani nodded. “Yeah. She’s been really good to me. She’s something special.” Which Graham seemed to know, judging by his expression. That was a solid point in his favor. And apparently Meg had a thing for the broken ones, whether she knew it or not. Knowing that just made Dani even fonder of her.
The man took Dani’s hand and they shook. “Nice to meet you, Graham.” No last name. That was interesting. But seeing as Dani was using a false one herself, she wasn’t one to pry. People had a right to their secrets. Dani glanced around the stockroom, which was already pretty well in order. Meg had clearly straightened up a bit before she left last night. Maybe some therapeutic cleaning to work out her own frustrations. Seeing that most of her pre-opening work was already done, Dani turned her gaze back to Graham. “You want a drink? We don’t open for a little bit, and the butterbeer’s really good.” There was probably a little organizing to be done behind the bar, but she could do that and talk at the same time. Besides, maybe it would let her get to know Graham a bit. Her suspicion about him being a werewolf had intrigued Dani enough to pull her out of her usual shy mode. She wanted to try and get a feel for her new colleague. He didn’t seem like a dangerous threat. But was he a friend? Dani didn’t really know yet.

“I wouldn’t have expected any different from her,” he said with a smile. The woman was right, Meg was indeed a very unique person the world could use more of. She helped people she barely knew and shouldn’t care about. The younger generation really could serve as an inspiration for the elder ones. Sadly most people of Graham’s generation didn’t take the younger ones too seriously. It would be rather hard to get on Meg’s bad side. Well the Death Eaters had succeeded but Death Eaters weren’t really likable people. Not if one were to ask Graham and he met about the quarter of them.
And then there was the awkward quietness after a greeting. Graham had never been a social bee (unless he was drunk). He’d almost suggested getting to start working when Miss. Carson suggested having a drink. “Huh? Just before work?” He started before she continued. Sure he’d been a regular drinker for the past years but he knew drinking on the job was highly unprofessional. “Oh, butterbeer is not a bad idea.” Sure why not, he never drank butterbeer anymore. There was time as he had prepared and cleaned the kitchen already and checked expiring dates. “Have you been working here for a long time?” Graham asked but would guess the answer was no. Usually young people switched jobs often before they found what they liked. He still asked out of politeness.

Graham didn’t seem too sure about the idea of a drink. Dani shrugged. She wasn’t going to press him if he wasn’t interested. But if Meg had seen something in him, he was probably worth getting to know. “Consider it a welcome to the Broomsticks thing.” She could afford to cover two bottles. Besides, what the boss didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him. Graham seemed to come around after a second, and Dani smiled as she started walking toward the back of the pub. She glanced briefly over her shoulder at Graham’s question. “Not really. It’s been… about eight months now.” Merlin, had it actually been that long? Sometimes it felt like she had returned to England only yesterday. Of course, at others it felt like a lifetime ago. “My mother’s American, so we moved there when I was ten. I came back to England in January to get reacquainted with it.” Or at least, that was the story she told people.
Dani led Graham out of the back and to the bar, motioning for him to take a seat. The bottles of Butterbeer were within easy reach now that school was back in session. The kids went through it like candy on the weekends. A flick of Dani’s wand chilled the two bottles. Some people like it warm in the tankards, but Dani thought the flavor came out better than it was cold. She twisted off the tops and hand Graham a bottle. “Can I ask how you ended up at the Broomsticks, or is that too personal?” She of all people knew better than to pry. If he didn’t want to talk about it, that was perfectly fine. But if he didn’t mind, it would be nice to get a feel for her new colleague. Her werewolf colleague. Dani still hadn’t decided what she was going to do about that. Probably best to wait until she had a better idea of what sort of person he was.

“Eight months is quite a bit actually,” he said as they walked, his hands in his pockets. “Still like it here?” There was something about this place that made him relax. Or perhaps it were the people that worked here. It had been Graham’s first week but he’d actually enjoyed himself working among people. Which was something he didn’t always do, not even back then when he worked for the ministry. He tilted his head when Dani told him she’d lived in America until January. A part of him wanted to ask what made her leave America as he assumed she didn’t bring it up for nothing. However the past could be personal so he took a different route. “What made you chose Hogsmaede?” The quietness probably or perhaps the students during the school periods. Graham liked the cozy feeling the small village gave but it also had a nostalgia value. Back in the days where he was just a teen, when everything was simple. Before he got old enough for his parents to involve him with the dark arts.
After he was signaled to do so, Graham took a seat and gazed around the empty pub. It did look different in daylight. “Thanks,” he accepted the beer but inspected it first and waited for Dani to drink first before he sipped from the bottle. Even in a place where he felt somewhat comfortable, Graham remained who he was. Paranoid. Maybe not Dani but someone else could try to poison him or even them. Then an unexpected question came. “Huh? Oh.. Well I’ve always known this pub since I was little,” he told the bartender. “Alcohol brought me to this place.” It used to be the Leaky but since a Death Eater had seen him there which ended in a fight he had to go for a different place. “I’m not proud of it but I won’t deny it,” he shrugged. Yep he had been a regular drinker for years, it was not like his life depended on it but it made things easier. Now he had a job, he planned to tone it down. “Meg knew I was looking for a job and told me I should try it here, I thought she was joking at first,” he said with a small smile.

Eight months certainly felt like a long time. Eight months since she had seen or heard from her family. By far the longest she had ever gone. But before she could turn melancholy over it, Graham was asking another question. Dani nodded. “Yeah, I do. There’s interesting people that come through here.” Like the Irish musician from a couple weeks ago. “The other staff have all been great too. And I like the village.” Graham asked the natural follow up question of why here, and Dani had to think on that for a moment. “I don’t know. It’s… quaint, I guess. Cozy. It feels sort of homey in a way.” She had wanted somewhere calm and quiet after what had happened back home. Somewhere her parents wouldn’t think to look. That and the picturesque village had quite simply stolen her heart from the moment she saw it. “Sometimes it feels like the rest of the world is a million miles away, you know? Like the bad stuff that happens out there can’t reach in here.” It wasn’t true, of course. But sometimes it felt like it. Or maybe that was just the pub itself with its warm atmosphere and Meg always trying to cheer everyone up. Somewhere along the way Dani had actually gotten attached to this place. She hadn’t really realized it until this very moment, but it was true.
Graham waited to drink until Dani had done so first. A little odd. But it wasn’t Dani’s place to pry. Maybe he had a reason. He looked like someone who had been through a lot in his life, and not just from being a werewolf. He seemed a little surprised at her question. Maybe he wasn’t used to sharing about himself. Fair enough. Dani could respect that. He did answer her question though, to her slight surprise. And he was pretty honest about it. “We’ve all got things we’re not proud of,” she said with a shrug. Besides, Dani liked people who could tell the truth even when it wasn’t flattering. She still wasn’t totally sure how she felt about her assumption that he was a werewolf. The only one she had ever met was the one who had bitten her. But the more Graham talked, the more Dani could feel herself starting to like him. A small smile tugged at her mouth in response to his own. “Meg never jokes about helping people. And she’s not very good at taking no for an answer.” Dani’s tone was fond as she spoke though. Meg was quickly coming to mean the world to her. After Dani was bitten, what friends she had all had distanced themselves from her one way or another. Only her family had stood by her. Her family and now Meg. That meant more than Dani could ever express. And apparently Meg had a habit of taken in broken strays, even if she wasn’t aware of just how much the members of her growing collection her in common.
(OOC – I know you literally just replied to this, but I had a ton of Dani muse and I couldn’t help myself.)

Graham couldn’t help but smile as Dani spoke of the positive experiences in her work. He watched her as she spoke. Her words were sincere which motivated him for this job. She sounded like she finally found peace in this place after a long time of hectic. At least it seemed the case in Graham’s eyes. He couldn’t help but agree, this place was homey. Not just the pub but also the town. It felt as if it was far away from the big scary world. It was almost as if she could read his mind as she said almost exactly what he had been thinking. “It really does make you feel that way,” he said calmly as his eyes wandered through the room. Too bad it wasn’t the case. He had even fought in here at one bad night. But this place gave him a feeling he hadn’t felt in years. A certain calmth, a certain security.
At last he sipped the cold butterbeer. It was an old yet familiar taste. The man grimaced when Dani mentioned everyone had things they weren’t proud of. Graham was sure he could fill a book with things about him he wasn’t proud of and mistakes he had made. He wasn’t going to mention this of course. What one didn’t need to know, one didn’t get to know. It wouldn’t do any good on the atmosphere. His spirits perked up when Meg was mentioned again. “That sounds like Meg, alright,” he chuckled softly. “She insisted I at least tried once. And well, guess who won?” Graham needed to be convinced in almost everything luckily Meg had the quality of convincing people. He folded both hands around the bottle and leaned on the bar. “I swear that girl is going to places. Or not as it seems she found heart in this place.”
