The new job was not her ideal one. Rosabella would much prefer to be working elsewhere, but she was new in the country, and had decided to start small. If she quit now, it wouldn't be a good work reputation for the future. Besides, she doubted there were many places she was even allowed to work now. If anyone found out about her, her chances at anything would be ruined. She wasn't the best waitress, either. It involved talking to a lot of people, and those people seemed to enjoy engaging her in conversation. She was tired and not in the mood for chatting, but they were her customers so she had to put up with it. Now, at least, the pub was a lot quieter, and Rosa finally had some time to herself. Collapsing into one of the customer stools by the bar, Rosa summoned her bag. When it reached her, she began to pull out her drawing implements and box of paper. The paper was of her own design - a box from a deck of cards held sheets of paper charmed to enlarge when tapped with a wand. Tapping once enlarged it to A5, twice to A4, three to A3, and four to A2. It made it much easier to carry it around without it getting crumpled. Now, she took one piece of paper, and tapped it twice before reaching for her pencil. Her eyes scanned the pub, and eventually fell on the window through which a huge castle could be seen. Rosa smiled. It was perfect - old and beautiful. Putting her pencil to the paper, she began to sketch the outline. Unfortunately, she hadn't done much when she heard approaching footsteps. Rosa looked up to see Danielle 'Dani' Carson, one of her co-workers coming towards her. "I-I'm sorry," she began protesting, her voice soft, not wanting to give herself a bad reputation so quickly. Taking a break to draw while on shift couldn't possibly be a good thing. "I was just— T-there was no one in, s-so I thought..." Rosa trailed off, her cheeks going pink, and her eyes slipped away from the other witch, landing on her outline of the beautiful castle.

The new girl made Dani nervous. It was that simple. Okay, it wasn’t really. It was actually incredibly complicated and delicate and therefore prone to collapse. Because Rosa had been at Ivermorny for Dani’s last two years. They had been in different houses, thank Merlin, so they hadn’t exactly been what one would call friends. But there was a vague familiarity and enough friends of friends connecting them that this could all be very, very bad. So far, Dani had done a pretty good job of steering clear of Rosa. Not in any obvious way. Just casually staying away whenever the job allowed. Which was made easier by the fact that Rosa didn’t seem to want to interact either and Meg was a little too busy with the whole Theo mess to notice Dani was keeping distance from their new colleague. But how long could this really last? How long before Rosa realized Dani was using the wrong last name? Or that whatever gossip had worked its way through the alumni grapevine about the werewolf attack last August and a student getting injured at Christmas was actually referring to Dani? How long until Rosa put together enough pieces to destroy the shaky life Dani was trying to build here? It had Dani worried. Especially on top of everything else already going on in the wizarding world.
Today though… Today something was different. Maybe because the pub had slowed down enough for Dani to actually look at Rosa for once. Not just glance over the vaguely familiar face, but really look. And what she saw as she wiped down a set of mugs behind the counter surprised her. Rosa looked tired. And lonely. And maybe just a little lost. That was when it finally hit Dani. She was new here, just like Dani had been back in January. (Merlin, had it already been eight months since she came to England?) And from the looks of things, she could probably use some help making friends. But it was when she pulled out the paper and pencils that Dani’s heart truly melted. Rosa was an artist. She had forgotten that. Or maybe she had never known it seeing as they hadn’t really run in the same circles. Dani looked around at the bar, which really didn’t need any more cleanup after the slow night they were having, and then back at the girl with the pencils. It was enough to melt through the anxiety surrounding Dani’s heart to the quiet and caring girl beneath it. Maybe reaching out was worth the risk.
Setting down the cloth she was using, Dani picked up her satchel from its spot behind the counter and walked around the bar to one of the seats beside Rosa. The serve saw her coming and immediately began apologizing. That only made Dani feel for her even more. She held up her hands in a nonthreatening gesture, a quiet smile creeping across her face. “Easy. You’re not in trouble. I promise. It’s a slow night.” She set her satchel down on the bar. “I wouldn’t do that while the owner’s around. But since he’s not…” She shrugged. What the man didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him. As if to prove the point, Dani said down on a stool and tugged her sketchpad out of her bag, giving Rosa a small smile as she did so. She flipped past several pages of plants and streetscapes and a few unfinished sketches of Meg in her garden before finally finding an open page. As she pulled a pencil out of one of the pockets inside her satchel, her eyes fell on Rosa’s drawing. The outline was only just beginning to take form, but Dani could already tell what it was supposed to be. The wondrous castle atop the hill had always fascinated Dani too, partly because she had never been there and partly because it just made such an intriguing subject. “You’re pretty good.” The words were spoken down to her own paper as she started the first few lines of a whisky bottle behind the counter. The one the Irish boy from a few nights ago had liked. If Rosa wanted to talk, she could take things from there. If not, Dani was perfectly happy to sit here and draw in silence.

Danielle didn't react in the way Rosa expected her to. She seemed rather cool about it in fact. Rosa's flush dampened slightly, and she managed a small smile that said she was relieved. And then Dani was… joining her? Rosa's eyes were drawn to the sketchpad - plants and avenues and some of people. Some were finished and others weren't, but the talent in the drawings was very evident. Dani's voice broke her train of thought and she looked up in surprise. "No," was her immediate reaction. She hadn't let too many people see her sketches - and her sister was always one to comment on her talent. And Rosa was always one to deny it. Rosa's blush returned at her sudden answer, however, and she tried to turn the compliment around, to keep the attention off of her. "Yours were b-better, certainly. You definitely have a gift." That was the best she could do, but it was sincere, even if it wasn't articulated well.
When a silence fell, Rosa put her pen back to the paper and began to add to her own drawing, but her eyes were drawn to the girl beside her, who was beginning her own sketch. For whatever reason, she hadn't seen much of Dani over the past few weeks of her starting, and she hadn't had a chance to actually look at her co-worker. There was something familiar about her, and Rosa's head tilted curiously at her. She didn't know many people from London, so it was a surprise that the face was bringing any sort of memory up. When Dani inevitably looked up, Rosa blushed again and her eyes slid to the window. "What's that castle?" she said, saying the first thing that came to mind in an attempt to cover up the fact that she had just been staring. Her intelligent brain now working somewhat, she added. "Is it Hogwarts?" Rosa's French accent was still there, perhaps a little lighter than it once had been, but enough that 'Hogwarts' sounded far more like ''Ogwarts' than anything. Her eyes went back to her drawing, and she picked up her pencil once more, continuing the sketch while she waited for an answer.

Rosa reacted pretty strongly against the compliment. That was okay. Not everyone was good at accepting praise. Dani might be slightly more adept, but being in the spotlight for too long could make her pretty uncomfortable as well. She shrugged in response to the returned compliment. “Which is how I know you do too.” She smiled warmly before settling in with her pencil. She didn’t get to draw nearly as much as she would like to anymore. It was nice to be able to just lose herself in the work and breathe.
Except she couldn’t quite get lost in her drawing this time, no matter how insistently her mind was thinking about Bran the musician and the way he had made her laugh. It was a little hard to focus when she kept feeling eyes on her neck. Dani glanced over at Rosa only to find the server watching her intently. Crap. What if she started putting things together? She didn’t seem to remember Dani so far, but the brain was a fickle thing. A single expression or turn of phrase might be enough to remind her. Rosa quickly looked away though, blushing as if embarrassed. And then she was asking about the castle. The tightening knot in Dani’s shoulders began to relax as the server seemed to move on. “Yeah. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Kinda makes you wonder if it’s that beautiful inside too.” It occurred to her too late that she had just given away the fact that she had gone to school other than Hogwarts. One more piece that could potentially jostle Rosa’s memory. Well, there was nothing to be done for it now.
Except maybe changing the subject. “You’re new to England, right? You settling in okay?” The words were cast out there casually, although Dani's focus was completely on Rosa despite her eyes being locked on her hand moving across the page. Truth be told, Dani could be just as motherly as Meg when the occasion called for it. She just tended to be the one in need of mothering where Meg was concerned. But checking in on someone who had just moved here, a boat Dani had been in herself only a few months ago, made for a refreshing change of pace. It was nice having someone else to focus on. It made all of Dani’s own problems seem so much further away.

Rosa wasn't good at handling compliments (at school they had nearly always preceded someone asking for something - usually last-minute help with homework that always ended with Rosa doing all the work), but Dani knew how to twist it so that the server was forced to concede, giving a slight nod and allowing her small smile to return. Rosa's eyes found her paper, but were drawn back to the girl beside her after a moment. It was only the faintest memory, and Rosa couldn't quite catch it to figure out who the girl was.
Changing the subject briskly seemed a good choice, and Dani changed with her, not pressing the fact that Rosa had been staring. Rosa nodded her agreement with her co-worker. It certainly was beautiful, and looked wonderfully old. She wondered if it was just as beautiful inside, and was going to ask Dani, but the woman was already speaking the same thought. Rosa's eyes flicked to Dani, her eyes curious. Did that mean she was foreign too? Attended a different school? Perhaps school was where she knew her from. But Dani was changing the subject almost as fast as Rosa had before. But Rosa decided not to pry, because she really didn't have the social skills to do so, it didn't seem too important, and Dani hadn't pressed her for her actions when she had changed the subject before.
Rosa hesitated over how to answer. But it made no difference, because she was clearly new, and looking lost all the time certainly didn't help. "Yes, I– well, I am okay," she settled with. She was still living with her parents, worked to keep herself busy, had made no friends, and her only one had gone off to school, to Hogwarts, to live for a year. Oh, and she now turned into a wolf once a month, the ministry wanted her to register herself as an animal, and she hadn't told anyone. Her 'settling in' to England wasn't going as well as she might have hoped, but she wasn't going to tell Dani that. Instead, Rosa returned to her drawing. Finishing the outline, she reached towards her satchel again, with her wand arm, and summoned her chalk. Then, thinking the better of that idea (what a mess she would make - particularly on her hands, and she couldn't serve anything like that, should a customer appear), reached in - her arm covered nearly to her elbow, and placed them back, before grabbing her coloured pencils instead.

Dani very nearly raised an eyebrow at Rosa’s answer. That wasn’t at all convincing. She didn’t want to pry though. “That’s good,” she said instead. She turned her gaze back to the bottle taking shape on the page. Thinking about the Irish musician who had ordered that brand made her feel warm inside. Like a shadow of happiness. He’d been sweet and funny, if incredibly flirty, and it had made her forget about all the mess in her own life. But right now the person she should be focusing on was Rosa. The question was how much to say. At what point would her words accidentally tip her hand?
“I didn’t do too well when I first got here,” Dani admitted, eyes still on her pencil moving across the paper. “I didn’t know anyone, so it was hard.” Being a secret werewolf certainly hadn’t helped matters. “It took a while before I actually made any friends. A few months, actually. Meg, the other bartender, she had to sort of force her friendship on me. But I’m glad she did. She’s been really good to me.” She stilled her hand to look over at Rosa. Hopefully this wouldn’t be the straw that broke the apparent amnesia. “I know you don’t know me very well. But if you need anything – work advice, a friend, whatever – let me know. Or Meg. She makes great tea. And I’m sure she’d love having someone else to mother.” The corner of her mouth twitched upward in a hint of a smile. Meg certainly seemed to have a habit of collecting strays. “I know it’s rough right now. But it’ll get better eventually.” Why was it so easy to say those words to someone else when it was so hard to believe them in the midst of her own mess? Somehow caring for others always came easier to Dani than caring for herself. But then again, Rosa seemed like she might need someone to look out for her a bit. And Dani certainly needed the distraction. Maybe they could help each other. Assuming Rosa didn’t suddenly realize who Dani was and blow up this whole situation.

Danielle was new too. Or she had been at least. At least a few months. Rosa didn't know much about Meg, but she'd seen the woman work, and she seemed so happy all the time. Rosa wished she could be as easy-going as Meg. She talked to the customers so easily while Rosa had to spend a good minute figuring out from afar whether they were ready to order or not. She'd kept her distance - as she had with most people so far. She didn't want to drag anyone new into what was now her mess of a life.
I know you don't know me very well. Rosa frowned internally. By now she was certain that her new co-worker was someone familiar, but she couldn't put her finger on it. But regardless of whether Rosa knew her, she was offering help. Rosa didn't want help - she didn't want anyone too close, because she didn't know what she'd do if someone found out about her. But she recognised the sentiment. "Thank you. I don't know Meg well, but she seems nice. She's good with the customers." That was something nice to say, right? Rosa wasn't very good with all the interpersonal skills that came naturally to some (like Meg, for example).
Rosa also appreciated the statement that was intended to give her hope. It wouldn't get better. She was caught - in a net of Lycanthropy and that was a net one couldn't escape. You either died or you got caught. And she couldn't see anything that would make it better. So she left it hangnig, not saying anything, but looking out the window and thinking about the conversation and her co-worker.
The more she thought about it, the more it bothered her. She couldn't figure out where she'd seen Dani before. Rosa wasn't usually one to pry, but this was frustrating her. "You haven't been to France have you?" Then, quickly thinking up a reason for asking such a non-related question, she added "I– It's just that Hogwarts is so beautiful, if you like it, I think you would like it." Rosa paused. "France, I mean."

It hadn’t taken much observation to know Rosa didn’t have the best people skills. Not that Dani minded. It just meant she needed people to reach out a little further. And while Dani wasn’t generally the most sociable person, she didn’t mind reaching out to people who truly seemed to need it. Rosa seemed to take Dani’s attempted olive branch fairly well. She even commented Meg, a subject that never failed to make Dan smile. “Meg certainly has a way with people.” Especially the damaged ones, although Dani didn’t say that out loud. She didn’t want Rosa taking offense. But between having Dani’s back on the full moons and offering a job to Graham just for coming in here all the time, Meg was certainly one of a kind. The world could use more people like her.
The question of France set Dani’s heart hammering. Rosa tried to cover it up, but it was too late. Dani could practically see Rosa trying to put together the pieces of how she knew her coworker. The young bartender dropped her gaze back to her sketchpad as casually as possible. She could not, absolutely could not, appear nervous. “Nope,” she said, somehow managing to keep her voice level. “Never been. What’s it like?” Maybe talking about France would keep Rosa from thinking about America. Although if this conversation went too much further into the past, Dani might have to create an excuse to disappear into the back. She didn’t want to just up and abandon Rosa. But if the girl figured out why Dani was familiar, she would want to know why Dani was here and using a different name. And then Dani’s carefully constructed house of cards just might crumble.
