If you boiled him down to the raw stuff, the stuff that made Corey truly Corey, you would probably better understand his need to try to father nearly everyone he met. It all sort of went hand and hand with his values as a Gryffindor. He was protective, as the dickens. He was encouraging - to the point of being pushy, but he just wanted people to be their best. And he always believed in their best, too; Corey could be idealistic and optimistic to a fault, but he always meant well.
And most of all, Corey was stubborn. His own, actual daughter called it nagging. Corey didn't nag, for Merlin's sake. He was simply very, very persistent. And yes, okay, a bit pushy. When he thought he was right about something, you'd be hard pressed to stop him from pursuing it. This showed most often in his attempts at fatherly advice - if he saw potential in someone and for some reason, they weren't reaching it, Corey was going to do everything in his power to rectify that. Whatever it took. Perhaps he got too involved in the lives of others - but in his opinion, the world would be a very lonely place indeed if everyone just minded their own business. No one would get the help they needed because in his experience everyone was too afraid to ask.
Corey saw a lot of potential in his students, naturally. That was just one of his duties as Head of House as well as Professor, right? Most students needed a little push every now and then - and some, a hearty shove. Case in point - @julia7. A couple years ago, the boy had all but disappeared from Hogwarts. Corey, of course, noticed. The boy was a Gryffindor, and Corey watched all his Gryffindors like a hawk. With all the other things that occupied his time, Corey didn't have as much time as he would have liked to track the boy down - but he did look. Some people got in contact with him and eventually, Corey found Toby again. The boy had changed, in more ways than one (and some more obvious than others), but none of that really mattered to Corey. He remembered the Toby he knew and what he'd seen there in his heart of hearts, and really he was ecstatic to have found the boy alive.
Over time, Corey managed to convince the boy to come back to Hogwarts. There would be some hiccups, sure, but Corey couldn't think of a better place for the boy. Time passed, and Toby was now officially back at Hogwarts - and apparently, causing trouble. After hearing about the incident at the career fair, Corey felt partly responsible. The beginning of term was always a whirlwind; Corey was a busy man, and that chronic curse of never having enough time struck again. He hadn't been able to spend the time with Toby he thought the boy needed.
Well, he would remedy that right now. He summoned Toby and awaited the boy in his classroom with the door open, occupying himself with a book until the boy appeared.

The last days Tobias hadn’t really shown himself from his best side. He’d skipped a few classes because he got the feeling that if he went, things would only end in a disaster. Like what happened during the career day. This was the most recent and heaviest incident. The headmistress even had to come. While last year he had seemed to make many improvements, this year started off troublesome. Tobias was more tense and his tantrums seemed to happen more frequently than before. He was scared and uncertain what the future would bring, if there even still was a future for him.
Apparently King got informed about the incident because Tobias was called to his head’s office. Even if Tobias would die before he’d admit it Professor King was a very special person to him. The man had come looking for him while everyone else turned their back on him. Even when the man learned about the situation he didn’t let Toby down. The man was there when he needed someone the most. And he was given another chance. In some way King was the closest person he had to a family. Well aside for Pat, but Pat was a pigeon and Toby was more looking after it than the other way around.
He was always glad to see the man but right now he was afraid he was going to get another lecture. Toby didn’t want to anger or disappoint the man, if he wanted anyone to be proud it was King. The Gryffindor entered the transfiguration office but didn’t quite know what kind of face to pull when he entered. King was one of the few people who had actually seen him smile (and cry), others had only known him as neutral or angry. The boy wandered over to the man’s desk and tilted his head to read the cover of the book the man was reading. “Anything interesting?”

The arrival of Toby at the door brought a gentle smile to Corey's face as he looked up. No matter what trouble he was getting himself into, Corey was proud of the boy. He always would be. It took a lot of guts to even just go on after all the things Toby had been through. And even if there were setbacks, the boy did indeed have accomplishments under his belt. He was back in school; that took a lot, too. Corey knew he could do it.
At Toby's question, Corey laughed and closed the book, sitting it on his desk and spinning it around so he could see it better. "A history of the Puddlemere United Quidditch team. Did you ever think you would catch me reading something like this?" It was no secret that Corey didn't understand a lick about the sport, or really care to. "I'm trying to brush up my knowledge for Rosie's sake. It's all the girl will talk about these days." Corey's daughter was absolutely Quidditch mad, and like the overly involved father that he was, he would get involved in her hobby even if it killed him (with boredom).
"Have a seat," Corey turned back up to look at Toby. "Want anything to drink?" He stood to go to the small cabinet behind his desk where his tea kettle laid in wait. While he busied himself with a cup, he looked back over his shoulder at Toby with a measured glance. "You're not in trouble with me, by the way, if that's what you're thinking. We just haven't gotten a chance to talk much since school started back. I thought we might catch up, if that's okay."

Corey was laughing at his question. That was good, right? Or was it because he said something silly? Feeling tense as he was he couldn’t bring himself to smile back. Not that he smiled a lot in general. He was however caught off guard when he was shown the title. Quidditch? His eyebrow rose. Since when did Corey like Quidditch? He got his answer sooner than expected. “Ah,” he mumbled as his eyes trailed away. Of course it was for his daughter. Toby didn’t want to seem jealous so he forced himself to seem interested. Also maybe if he could get Corey to talk about something else he might forget to get angry with him for causing a scene in the great hall. “How… How is she doing? D-did she make it to the team?” Well that could have gotten out smoother.
The Gryffindor didn’t sit down when he was asked to, nor did he reply on the offer of a drink. Only when Corey told him he wasn’t in trouble he sort of deflated and simply fell limp in the chair. What? Toby was slightly confused. “Erm… Sure.. I suppose.” Toby didn’t quite know what the man wanted to catch up on. He’d see what he would ask and if he needed to reply in a lie or not. Many things happened that he didn’t want Corey to know. He wanted the man to think well of him, that all the trouble he had gone through to help Toby hadn’t be a waste of time. But that was far from reality.

Corey felt a pang of...something, at the way Toby's eyes trailed away at the mention of Rosemary. Corey tried to make a conscious effort to not talk about his kids so much in front of the boy, but that was hard going for Corey. He talked about his kids all the time. On some level, though, he knew it bothered Toby. Because he wasn't one of Corey's kids, as much as the man sometimes treated him like one. Toby could be, maybe one day...Corey certainly wasn't opposed to the idea of adopting the boy - but he didn't even know if Toby wanted that. The situation was more complicated than it was with his actual children. Toby was almost at an age where he could make his own decisions, and was already making some of them. Corey didn't want to press anything on him that would stress the poor boy out more.
Toby tried, and it made Corey smile. "Not this year, unfortunately. She's a bit torn up about it; but she'll be fine. There's always next year." Corey was both sad and relieved the girl hadn't made the team. He needed another year or so to accept the fact his daughter wanted to play the one sport that happened hundreds of feet in the air.
When Corey turned around to make tea, there was silence. He didn't even hear Toby move, much less answer him. He turned around and said what he said mostly just to unfreeze the boy. Corey went ahead and made two cups of tea, setting them on his desk as he sat back down. "Alright, great," he smiled, stirring in milk into his tea. "How's the start of term been, overall? Are you settling back in okay?"

The Gryffindor gazed up with watery yet shimmering eyes when he saw the man smile. He wasn’t really tearing up but he couldn’t fully suppress the feeling and smile that was threatening to break through his face. Toby felt giddy. Had he done good? Was Corey proud of him? He could be good and kind with some effort. See he could do this; being a normal child. Then his face fell realizing that the head of his house was possibly smiling because they spoke of Rosemary. Tobias wanted to hate the girl for keeping Corey to herself but he couldn’t bring himself to hate on her. If anything he admired her even if he was jealous of what she had and could do.
He felt terrible for having a slight victorious feeling when he heard she didn’t make it to the team. Because he hadn’t either (heck he hadn’t even tried because he knew he’d be terrible) which placed them on the same level. Yes he might see her as his rival but not one you wished ill upon. “I’m sure she’ll make it next year,” he said in a last effort.
Toby hadn’t noticed himself that he had frozen up. Not until his teacher turned around while he was making tea. Sitting in the chair he gazed around the room before Corey spoke to him again. He slowly nodded. “Fine I guess.” Aside from that incident during career day. “I love Hogwarts,” he said suddenly before he caught himself and closed off his mouth with both of his hands. His pale cheeks reddened up. He hadn’t meant to say it out load. But because he feared being expelled it just slipped out.

"Next year," Corey nodded in agreement, and then he dropped it. It took the man physical effort not to talk about his kids all livelong day, but he would refrain for Toby's sake. He'd almost caught the boy smiling, just now, and Corey wouldn't rest until he coaxed it fully onto his face for more than a millisecond.
Corey needed Toby to smile, because he was otherwise unconvinced that the boy was as 'fine' as he said he was. Corey would worry himself to death over any of his students - and even more so over one he'd invested so much of his heart in at this point. He genuinely cared about the young Gryffindor and it was heartbreaking to him that the boy just couldn't find happiness.
Or maybe he had found some. It certainly seemed that way, because Toby looked so overwhelmed by his own expression of love for Hogwarts that he might explode. Or maybe he was just embarrassed, having that moment of vulnerability in front of Corey. That bothered Corey, either way - he wanted the boy happy and he wanted the boy comfortable. "Me too," he said, smiling for him. He took a sip of tea. "What do you love the most about Hogwarts? I think my favorite thing is probably...Gryffindor tower. It's the part of the castle that feels the most...castle-y, to me."

Tobias wouldn't admit it easily but he was glad they were done talking about Corey's children for now. He didn't want to start hating them just because he was jealous. But he found it hard not to be envious. Whenever he came across them, he tried to ignore their presence. Not because they were terrible people or anything, it was simply because he always felt that bitter taste whenever they were near by. Smiling and laughing. It was not that he wished to take that happiness away from them or any of the students. He only wished to experience that happiness himself. Maybe some day but it was hard to remain optimistic after being rejected so many times.
The Gryffindor boy didn't know what had gotten into him. It had never been his intention to admit so openly that Hogwarts was the best thing he had in his life. The realization shocked him and he also felt embarrassed for such a stupid confession. Cool kids always pretended not to like school. But Hogwarts was everything he longed for in life; a stable warm environment. Big blue eyes gazed up at the adult on the other side of the desk when Corey told him he too loved this school. To keep himself distracted, Toby took the cup of tea and held it with both hands in front of his mouth. He blew the warm steam away. The boy was hesitant to answer the question and listened to his teacher instead. When the adult was done talking, he knew he had to reply or a silence would fall. "I-I like... That there is always food," he mumbled against his cup his eyes glanced down at the desk. It was a great thing. The last month of summer he'd spend on the streets, wondering if he would even get to eat that day. Not having to worry about such things and just eating whenever you wanted was a blessing. "It's always warm and there is a bed for me." Again sleeping outside on a bench in the park wasn't great. "The potion makes it more bearable... And I learn a lot of new things," he said that last part with a little more enthusiasm.

Toby's answers were unsurprisingly heartbreaking. Where other children might list the Quidditch matches or the Hogsmeade trips as their favorite thing about Hogwarts, it made sense that Toby just liked the food and the warmth. Corey wouldn't for one second let that show on his face, how deeply that dug at him, though. He was just beyond happy Toby had those things, and that he accepted them. "Have you ever been in the kitchens? I don't think students are technically allowed down there...but I think it's one of those things every Hogwarts student needs to see once in their time here. The house elves will make sure you won't need to eat for a week afterward you visit them," he smiled. Giving Toby permission to break a rule, probably not his proudest Head of House moment, but the boy deserved a feast just for him more than anyone.
Corey nodded more solemnly then, at the mention of the potion. He would make no promises now, but he would do everything in his power to make sure the boy always had his potion going forward. He and D'Angelo made quite a bit of money, if it came to that. The next thing Toby said made Corey split back into a grin. He was pretty sure Toby wasn't just saying it to appease him, either - he actually sounded excited about learning! "That's right, no finer education than Hogwarts! What's your favorite subject nowadays, anyway?"

Toby’s cheeks coloured red when Corey asked him if he’d ever been to the kitchens. The kitchens were his secret hiding place. So obviously he had been there before. Mostly because students weren’t allowed there and he’d be left alone. Besides that the food was a heavy factor too. If he told his teacher he’d been there, he’d both admit on breaking the rules and betray his hiding place. A pair of big blue eyes gazed up at the man. “Uhu, I-I will go there some time,” he mumbled slowly looking away as if he feared the man could read the truth in his eyes.
“Um...” The Gryffindor thought when he had to pick his favorite subject. “I don’t know,” he admitted. Of course it was Flying but that class wasn’t cut for him. “I think dueling,” he mumbled still not sure of an answer. This was where he could’ve taken points by answering with transfiguration. But he didn’t want to lie for the sake of being liked.

Toby looked so afraid to admit to his rule-breaking, and honestly, it was heartening for Corey. Toby wasn't a bad kid. He wasn't heartless or uncaring, not in Corey's opinion. He was just in a bad, bad situation. "Try the pecan biscuits sometime; they don't usually serve them up in the Great Hall, but they are melt-in-your-mouth delicious." Corey was still smiling. He just wanted Toby to have this safe space, to feel like everything was okay. To be happy enough to actually be interested in something. Corey was maybe putting on a little, getting over enthusiastic about the things Toby was saying just to encourage the boy. "Is that right? Dueling? Not my best subject; surprisingly enough, I always tend to resort to trying to turn my opponent into a duck." He grinned. "Have you got a favorite spell?"
