Among the many subjects at Hogwarts one could take in their seventh year, astronomy wasn't one of Cassidy's strongest - but she was doing it anyway. It involved a bit too much memorization for her taste; but she did like the connection the subject had to divination, one of her absolute favorites. The stars were a great aid in divining the future. Alas, her homework tonight had absolutely nothing to do with that - just a bit of stargazing tonight - but she actually found herself sort of excited all the same. She'd invited Jasmine to come study with her, and was currently waiting for the girl to show up and hoping she hadn't made a total fool of herself. Cassidy didn't even really know why she was feeling that way. When did she start caring what people thought of her? She shook her head and sighed, steeling herself against it and refusing to let the nerves bother her. Whether Jasmine showed up or not (please let her show up), Cassidy had homework to do. She wasn't really sure what she was going to do with her life after this last year at Hogwarts, but slacking off now wouldn't do her any favors. Cassidy climbed down from the tower buttress she sat on once she heard the clock tower strike the hour. She started setting up her telescope and rolling out a piece of parchment for a star chart, holding it down against the slight breeze on the top of the tower with her inkwell and her textbook. Star gazing with Cassidy. Something about it sounded sort of romantic and really appealing. Jasmine wasn't sure why staring up at tiny bright blobs in the sky was supposed to be lovey dovey or why she was looking forward to it with Cass, of all people. She didn't think of Cassidy in quite the same way as she thought of her other friends and found herself paying a little more attention to what the seventh year did or how she moved and when the Slytherin laughed there was a strange thrill in her chest. It was confusing but pleasant and why the seventh year Gryffindor was taking faster and longer strides up the endless stairs towards the astronomy tower.
The cocky and confused Gryffindor arrived at the meeting spot, perhaps a few moments late. "Hey!" she called, breathless when she spotted her homework companion setting up for the task of the night. "Hope you've not been waiting too long?" Jasmine lifted the textbook tucked under her arm for emphasis. "I forgot this and had to run back to Gryffindor tower." Mostly true, she'd dashed back with plenty of time but spent a good few minutes pacing the common room trying to figure out why her heart was racing and her palms were sweaty. Jas stepped over to where Cass was set up... The Slytherin must put love potion or something in her shampoo because she smelled really, really... really nice. "We can share the same telescope, yeah?" That would save her the trouble of setting it all up and give her an excuse to stand just a little bit closer.
Jasmine tucked windblown curls back behind her ear, the breeze wasn't strong but coupled with the almost-autumn air it made for a chilly night. She pulled into herself a bit, arms folded tightly as she shivered. "S'abit cold, isn't it? You'd think that Professor L would've given us some essay or something, not stick us out here to freeze to death." Enough griping, the sixth year reached into her bag for a quill. "So, star charts. What's first? They all look the same to me."

Right on cue (or clock tower chime, whatever), Jasmine appeared at the top of the tower. Cassidy heard her before she saw her, and a smile spread over her face before she even got the chance to turn around. "No, you're right on time," she shook her head, tilting it at the last chime of the clock. Jasmine showed her textbook, and Cassidy nodded in approval. "Good thing; mine's currently occupied." She pointed back to where her textbook was doing a half-assed job of holding the curling, fluttering parchment down. She chewed on her lip as Jasmine approached, gaze lingering on the girl. She wanted to say something funny - impressive, even - but for the life of her, it was like all that breeze at the top of the tower had whipped the words right out of her.
"Oh, yeah, of course," she said quickly to the other girl's request, caught a bit off guard what with all the lingering gazes and whatnot. Smooth, Cassidy - but she did really like the idea of sharing a telescope with Jasmine. You know, because it was cold out here and...stuff. She unconsciously mimicked Jasmine, tucking her own wild curls behind her ear as they bounced in agreement with the Gryffindor's observation. "Better now than December, I guess. I love this weather though." She cast an appreciative glance way down below, at the grounds slowly turning to their autumn colors.
Jasmine again brought her back to the present, to their task at hand - which, unfortunately, did not involve gazing at fall leaves or girls with curly hair, but rather the stars. "Star charts. Right." Cassidy turned back to her setup and flipped open the textbook at the corner of the parchment. She rummaged through the pages until she got to a section on the northern sky. She tapped her chin in thought as she looked. "Hmm. I guess...the North Star?" She ran her finger along the lines of text. "Polaris. That one's supposed to be easy. It's riiight..." She trailed off as she looked up, and then ducked her head down to look through the telescope. She pointed up, a little to the right of right above their heads. "There. I think." She dropped back down to search the textbook again. "Part of Ursa Minor..." Her head swiveled back up. "Eh? That doesn't look like a little bear at all..." Cursed Astronomy. And people complained that tea leaves were hard to read...

Jasmine was an observant one. Some might think she was all brute and no think (especially the way she's prone to stomping around threatening to break the noses of people who wronged her or bullied others) but she noticed things like the look she got from Cassidy, complete with nervous lip chewing. Her eyebrows arched questioningly, asking "You alright?" Cassidy was acting strangely, so was she. They made a funny pair, all looks and awkwardness.
The awkwardness didn't let up when she asked to share a telescope. "Cool." she said in an attempt of smoothing out whatever was hanging in the air between them, nodding and rendering the whole hair trucking useless. Her own ringlets bounced, falling in front of her face as she nodded and Jas rolled her eyes up as if she could stare the hair down. The Gryffindor sighed and before she could stop herself a hand was reaching out to twirl a lock of Cassidy's hair 'round her finger. "I like your hair much better than mine. Mine's always falling in my face but yours sort of sits perfectly all the time." Bluntness was definitely a Gryffindor trait, Jasmine wasn't one to mince words or beat around the bush. Cassidy was a very pretty girl and Jas sort've just wanted to run her fingers through the seventh year's hair but was satisfied with the twirl of a single lock. She disentangled her finger.
Jas peered over the edge, nodding in agreement with Cassidy's weather opinion. "Yeah, it's nice enough, I guess." she shrugged and the girls focused in on their actual reason to be shivering up in the high tower. Jasmine couldn't help but notice how utterly adorable Cassidy was when she was concentrating on her work, fingers running along the text to keep her place and attention bouncing up and down from the sky to the book and back again. The sixth year found herself grinning as she watched the Slytherin work through the North Star and laughing openly when she declared that the star didn't look like a bear. "Or a sea witch, for that matter." Ursa and Ursula always sounded the same to her. Jas laid a sweaty, slightly trembly hand on Cass's shoulder to guide her aside so she could look through the telescope, lip caught in between her teeth as she squinted into the telescope. "It looks like a dot next to other dots which are next to even more dots."

"I'm fine. Perfect," Cassidy answered quickly, grinning slightly even though the color spread through her face. She was making a fool out of herself, she knew it, but it was hard not to smile at her companion for the evening. They managed to work their way through the awkwardness, anyway - for a moment. Cassidy laughed as Jasmine scolded her hair, and then almost immediately froze up when the other girl's hand was in her hair. She watched the strand of hair twirl round and round, smile creeping up into her eyes. "Thank you. Your hair is so pretty, though. I'd kill for ringlets like that." Cassidy laughed nervously and ruffled the hair on the other side of her head, eyeing Jasmine's hair shyly. She only wished she was smooth enough to wrap one of those curls around her finger, but that would be the definition of awkward.
When the pair of students eventually managed to look away from each other, they looked to the stars - and neither of them seemed very impressed. Cassidy looked up at Jasmine's mention of a sea witch, staring at her blankly for a moment while her brain caught up with the reference. Jasmine was a Muggleborn, that was right. Cassidy had gotten familiar with Muggle movies thanks to her other Muggleborn friends throughout the years. "Definitely not big enough," she grinned. She again froze up when she felt Jasmine's hand again, this time on her shoulder. She stumbled not so gracefully out of the way so Jasmine could look. While the girl did so, Cassidy pored over the textbook again, laughing at the girl's comment. She filled up a quill and took it to the parchment, sticking a little dot and labeling it 'Polaris' right near the middle. Then, back to the textbook. "Apparently there's another dot called...Kochab? Or something. Sort of curved up away from Polaris. Do you see it? They're both supposed to be really bright right now. Supposedly." Cassidy looked up into the sky without the aid of the telescope, searching for the brightest stars.

Perfect. Cassidy certainly was, Jasmine could agree with that statement. The blush only accentuated her cheeks and her smile and Jas found herself enjoying their homework meeting already. Not many people enjoyed homework but then not many got to work with Cassidy as a partner. Something about the Slytherin made the day (or night, in this case) seem a little brighter. The Gryffindor paused at the sound of her laugh and grinned before reaching out for her hair.
"You're sweet." said Jasmine, her own cheeks taking on a reddish color when Cass complimented her wild curls. They weren't something she was fond of herself, they had a mind of their own and liked to fall in a way that made her look homeless, in her personal opinion. It was her family curse, her mum and twin sisters were all equally afflicted with terrible, unruly hair. Jasmine raised her eyebrows, asking "You sure you alright?" with an amused smile plastered across her own features. It was sort've funny the influence she suddenly had on Cassidy, who'd been her friend for awhile and should be comfortable. When her finger was free of the other girl's hair she laid a hand against the Slytherin's forehead, giggling. "You're acting strange, but you're not running a fever."
Her muggle reference nearly seemed to fly right over Cassidy's head but she caught it at the last moment. "Not nearly big enough, you're right." Jasmine twirled her own curl around her finger mindlessly as she peered into the telescope. The sixth year lifted her head at the name 'kochab' "Sorry, did you sneeze?" Bright.. Bright. She leaned back over the telescope, squinting in and searching the skies. "They all look bright.. I suppose this one here's a little brighter than the others."

Oh, gods. Jasmine had to be toying with her at this point, amused as she looked at the effect she had over Cassidy. Cassidy couldn't hide it if she tried. She didn't know why, but suddenly being around Jasmine just made her nervous. Maybe something had changed about the Gryffindor over the summer, something that kept drawing Cassidy's eye back (she'd always been pretty, though). For the time being, Cassidy just put it down to getting back into the swing of things with her friends. Living around pretty girls took some getting used to after a summer of just seeing her brothers, right? "I'm always strange, aren't I?" Cassidy laughed it off, rolling her eyes. "I'm just...in a good mood. A really good mood." She nodded. That was that. Yep.
That was totally the reason she couldn't stop giggling, either. Totally. "You're supposed to say bless you," she teased, poking Jasmine in the side with her elbow as the Gryffindor leaned down to observe the stars. Cassidy looked where she looked. "Yeah...I think that's it." Who knew, really. That star was going to be Kochab on Jasmine and Cassidy's Amazing Star Chart, at any rate. "We should probably throw some glitter on this when we're done. Maybe Professor Lau will give us extra credit." Cassidy inked it in, and then went back to the textbook. "And...one more in that constellation...right above the last...Pherkad? What?" She shrugged away from the textbook and its strange names, temporarily mystified by the nuances of astronomy, and moved right against Jasmine to peek up into the telescope. "Do you see it?"

Cassidy seemed to like her joke, giggling and poking her in the side which earned a "Hey!" from the Gryffindor as she shooed the girl's hand away, giggling right along. They determined the bright blob they were looking at was going to be Kochab, the sneeze like star and Cass had the fabulous idea of adding glitter. "Oooh, I like that idea. He likes sparkly things, doesn't he?" she tilted her head to observe the probably inaccurate star chart. "We'll go with snake green. Maybe he won't notice we have no idea what we're doing." She returned to her telescope, searching the skies for a star called...." What did you call me?" She asked, peeking up again and grinning at her own joke. "I don't think you're supposed to say that in pleasant company." And the current company was very pleasant, Jasmine decided. No one she'd rather freeze up on the astronomy tower with. That freezing was mitigated as Cassidy pressed in against her. She felt warm and soft and lots of other wonderful adjectives. Jasmine was flustered by the closeness but didn't want to move away because it felt so right. It couldn't be right, though, could it? Her eyes were drawn to Cassidy's very pretty mouth when she asked her question and before she knew what she was doing, the Gryffindor had the Slytherin's chin in her hand. There was some sort of magnetic pull, dragging her in as she closed the very small space between them. Her house was known for it's boldness, after all. Her lips were millimeters away from Cassidy's when something behind her, a voice or a clearing of the throat or something, startled Jasmine and she jumped away from the Slytherin. Her eyes were wide with confusion and she shook her head, running a hand through curly locks. What was that? As close as they had been seconds ago, there was a nice healthy space between them now. A couple feet, at least. The flustery feeling was gone, allowing her to think a bit more clearly "I--sorry. I don't know what-- Oh!" Never mind that, the sound! Jasmine whipped around to find the sparkle loving professor himself, Professor Elias Lâu standing behind them. "Hello Professor." And their star chart didn't even have any glitter on it yet.

Elias had been enjoying classes so far; his students seemed to like them even though they had to climb ten billion stairs to get to his office and/or classroom. He certainly thought it was worth it, even when it was chilly out, but not all students shared his academic obsession enthusiasm with the heavens. He'd been surprised at how many students had reported enjoying his assignment - and more pleasantly surprised at their efforts. On the majority, the constellations were right.
He hadn't intended to interrupt anyone doing an assignment. He'd just wanted to check the stars - after all, he was keeping detailed charts, used in an experiment involving properties of different types of charmed stones - but he was pleasantly surprised to hear a pair of students chattering away as they did their work. They became silent as Elias approached, and he peered around the corner just in time to see one of the girls lean in to do something decidedly not very academic in his Astronomy tower.
Not wanting to embarrass them much, Elias cleared his throat loudly, causing the girls to startle. A tiny, amused smile lit his features as one of them adjusted themselves and babbled nervously, then held up a hand as she realized he was here. "Hello," he greeted, amused. "Watson, Bradshaw. Any luck with your star chart?"

Jasmine had the most adorable giggles; they made it hard for Cassidy to stop giggling herself. At this rate they weren't going to get anything done besides a tummy ache from too much laughter - not that there had been much hope for them in the first place. Two stars in and they were already considering bribing their professor with shiny things. "He is sparkly," Cassidy said with an appreciative smile for her Head of House, who she much preferred to some of the former ones. "We'll have to throw in a little red and gold, too," Cass nodded, observing Jasmine as she observed the star chart. "He's always on about house unity...I reckon he fancies Professor King. They're always together." She winked conspiratorially at her Gryffindor companion. Perhaps Professor Lau had the right idea.
The giggles began again as soon as the talk turned back to the stars and their downright silly names. "Sorry," she stuck her tongue out at Jasmine. And then they were right next to each other, and very quickly Cassidy was no longer mystified by the stars but rather the girl right next to her, staring at her. Cassidy turned her head with a slight intake of breath at how warm and tingly Jasmine's fingers felt against her chin. At that moment her whole world was Jasmine, the girl so close she completely took up her field of vision, blocking out even the stars...
But of course - Professor Elias Lau, Head of Slytherin House, and Professor of Astronomy, couldn't have anyone blocking out his precious stars. Almost as if on cue the man came bursting (not really, but it did feel rather intrusive to two girls caught up in a moment) out onto the tower. Honestly, Cassidy didn't notice or even hear him. Jasmine so suddenly pulling away from her was what clued Cassidy in, and she whipped her head around wildly to find who was spying on them. And oh Merlin, it was their bloody professor! Her Head of House! Cassidy's expression matched Jasmine's, even her mannerisms matched as she nervous ran a hand through her hair. Cassidy didn't know who to look at. Jasmine, who was apologizing and Cassidy didn't really understand why - or Professor Lau, who wasn't giving her a lot of time right now to try to understand what the heck just happened.
"Uh." Yep, there was an answer. Cassidy cleared her throat, her fingers going nervously to fiddle with the star chart as the professor asked about it. "Maybe you...maybe you should take a look at it?" The more seconds that passed, the harder Cassidy was finding it to look at Jasmine now.
