Now this - this was an assignment Cassidy could get behind. Not just because it was divination, either; she loved everything about the subject. Palmistry was just a particularly intimate form of divination, personal - and as an intensely nosy person, this suited Cassidy just fine. She found herself doing it all the time anyway, grabbing her friends' hands randomly, reading their lines and trying to get inside their heads. Not a lot of people respected the art of divination, but Cassidy thought those people just didn't put enough thought into it. It wasn't like other subjects, where you could read it in a book and then practice it to perfection. With divining, you had to think on it a while before you could really do anything at all. Of course an introspective gal such as Cas would just eat that up. And now, thanks to this assignment, Cassidy actually had permission to be nosy with people's palms. She'd thought about asking Jasmine to help her study with divination, too - but honestly, the thought made her palms sweat. Instead, Cassidy set herself up in the divination tower and waited for someone to come to her while she fiddled around with the rest of her homework. Surely someone would stop by eventually. Cassidy liked being up here, anyway. She was a big fan of their new professor and the way he'd set up his classroom. At the sound of the trapdoor opening, Cassidy turned her head up from her textbook to smile at the new arrival. Bartholomew Caldeira and/or anyone else that wants to join~ We're doing this: homenumrevelio.boards.net/thread/804/divination-assignment-1?page=1&scrollTo=3309

Some might dismiss Divination as being goofy or nonsensical, but Bat actually thought it was rather interesting. While he preferred subjects like Ancient Runes and Arithmancy, Divination had its own kind of magic about it - and honestly, was there anything cooler than predicting the future? It was kind of an essential skill for those of the witchy persuasion, in Bat's point of view. The problem that he had with Divination was that a lot of it wasn't hard work, but talent and opening your mind - the opposite of how he usually studied. In Divination, you almost had to relax to do it properly and open yourself to the universe, as one former professor had said.
The new professor had just set an assignment - palm reading - and Bat decided to go and see whether there was someone in the tower who he could do the assignment with. He'd just finished an essay for Potions, something long-winded about hedgehog spines and their effects on certain healing draughts, and now he wanted a bit of a break. Thankfully, he didn't have to climb too far to the tower (he pitied those who resided in the dungeons, having to take all those stairs) and had only dropped his glasses once by the time that he reached the cozy room. It was a nice place to study, actually, comfy and lots of windows, and Bat felt his posture relaxing already as he looked around the room.
He spotted a Slytherin girl sitting with her books, and smiled a greeting in response, crossing the room to say hello. "Mind if I join you?" he asked, scratching at the back of his neck. "I was hoping to do that Divination assignment, but if you're busy..."

The new arrival was a boy - a Ravenclaw boy, and a prefect, it seemed. He returned her smile in kind and Cassidy sat up a bit straighter, happy to have a companion. Not all the students she ran into were exactly nice, and the residual prejudice of Slytherins didn't help much either - so if this one was smiling at her, they were already on the right track.
"Not at all; sit down," she nodded at the boy as he came across the room to her. She stuck her hand out. "I'm Cassidy. Seventh year." When the boy spoke his intentions, Cassidy's face lit up in a rare expressive moment. She grinned at the boy, nodding again. "That's what I'm trying to do, too. I was hoping to run into someone who's palm I haven't read a thousand times before." She ducked her head a bit sheepishly, color tinging her cheeks. Introducing herself as a divination nerd wasn't the greatest way to shake the reputation of being a divination nerd.

The girl looked friendly, and Bat relaxed a little bit, shooting surreptitious glances around the room. Honestly, he liked it here. Certainly it was safer than Duelling, which Jasmine had coerced persuaded him into joining, and it was comfy. He nodded thankfully at her acceptance and slid into a spot across from her, liking the way her expression beamed out at him when he mentioned the assignment.
Cassidy might not want to be known as a divination nerd, but Bat liked nerds. He roomed with nerds. He was a nerd. So he felt rather at home as she expressed her wish to read 'new' palms, and scrubbed his hands on his slacks before offering one to her. "Well then you're certainly welcome to read mine," he grinned. "I'm Bat, by the way. Well, Bartholomew, but only my parents call me that."

The boy agreed to let her read his palm, and Cassidy's smile widened. She immediately took his hand as he offered it, holding it upward in one of hers while she ran the fingers of her other hand over the boy's palm. There were all sorts of nooks and crannies there, just waiting to be assigned some meaning. Cassidy tore her attention away when the boy spoke again, giving her his name. "Bat - that's interesting. I like it." Not too often you met someone willingly going by an animal's name, of course Cassidy was going to like it.
As interesting as names were, Cassidy's attention soon drifted back down to Bat's palm. Just like she'd been taught time and time again when reading a palm, one should always start with the big lines. While the more interesting things may lie within the more nuanced parts of the palm, the lines were easier to read at first and painted a nice background for those more interesting things. Cassidy ran her thumb up and down Bat's life line, going from below his index finger down to his wrist. "Your life line is really long...and deep. Life's been pretty good to you so far, yeah?" She glanced back up at Bat, but was soon at it again, looking for more.
And there was indeed more - or so it seemed. Maybe it was just a trick of the soft light of the classroom, but she could have sworn she could see Bat's life line repeating itself, not twice but three times. Fainter each time, but it sure looked the same. "Oh - that's interesting." She sat his hand down on the table and went for her textbook, flipping through to the well-worn pages on palmistry. She browsed for a minute before finding what she was looking for. "You're not a twin, are you?" That seemed the easiest explanation for such a phenomenon, but there were others.
