It was a beautifully sunny day out, and Madison was completely bored, at fact that generally tended to spell trouble for Gryffindor’s point count. She probably had some homework somewhere she could be doing. But why waste weather like bent over a boring textbook? No, Madi wanted to do something fun. Alas though, most of her friends were currently tied up in some class or other. That left her wandering aimlessly through the castle looking for something to do. She was passing by the courtyard and seriously considering the idea of setting off a Weasley product in the library just to watch the chaos when she caught sight of a familiar face tucked into one of the alcoves in the wall that partially separated the courtyard from the walkways around it. Perfect. @julia3 was both a prankster and one of Madi’s teammates, which naturally made him one of her better friends. And also prime entertainment.
She headed across the courtyard to Mikko with a grin. “Hey you.” Madi jumped up onto the low ledge with him, setting her back against the other side of the alcove so she was facing her teammate with her legs straddling either side of the stone. “You look about as bored as I feel. Care to do something about it?” Smudge had been seated in Mikko’s lap, but he got up to wander over to Madison. She’d always had a soft spot for the darn cat. “Hey Smudge. How you been?” She picked the cat up and set him in her lap so she could stroke his fur. As her fingers moved back and forth, something strange caught her eye. Madi frowned and bent closer. Were those scars? She carefully parted the cat’s fur as Smudge protested loudly. What she saw made her eyes widen in shock. He looked like he’d been attacked. And the marks she found herself staring at looked familiar enough that her stomach twisted into knots. Those couldn’t possibly be from a werewolf. Could they? Mikko had no reason to be in Godric’s Hollow. Besides, surely Madison would’ve heard something if he had been hurt. (The fact that her own injury had been kept mostly secret so far was entirely beside the point.) But those marks… “Bloody hell! What happened to him?” There was worry in her eyes as she looked up at Mikko. Something had definitely happened. Something bad. And if Smudge had been hurt, it was a safe bet Mikko had been too.

Mikko was done with class for today. He was sitting in the courtyard with Smudge on his lap. The cat needed a good comb, long fur tangled like mad. Smudge liked it for the first few strokes but he grew tired pretty quickly. “Smudge sit still,” Mikko groaned as he tried to keep the cat in place. When Mikko lost his grip because he heard a familiar voice, Smudge saw the chance to run away from him and towards Madison. “Tsk, traitor,” he shook his head but grinned to Madi instead. “I’m pretty bored and my only source of entertainment just walked away.” Smudge gave him a look as if the cat knew exactly Mikko was talking about him.
The boy sighed and leaned back. “So do you have anything in mind?” Mikko watched Madi interact with Smudge until he noticed she was doing something that made the cat growl, hiss and make his hairs stand up right. Mikko had always been protective about his cat but he almost became obsessed after Smudge got hurt. It was his fault and Mikko still felt guilty for drawing the cat in. It was just that neither went anywhere without the other. “Stop it! You’re hurting him,” he shouted and pulled the cat back from her arms. The boy held his cat against his chest and hushed him like a baby. The scars were still sensitive, Mikko had known it. Sleeping on his chest had become less comfortable ever since the attack.
Then the question came and Mikko knew he had to come up with an answer quickly. “Dragons!” Why was that always the first word that came up with him? And what the hell the scars were not big enough to come from a dragon. “Nicole was having a young dragon to take care of. Smudge got into a little fight,” he assembled a lie quickly. Hopefully Madison would believe him.

Madi grinned in triumph at having been chosen by the cat. They both knew he would wander back to Mikko eventually, but Madison would definitely hoard the cat’s affection while it lasted. “I can’t help that I’m more fun,” she said innocently. Speaking of fun. The question of what to do made her shrug. “I thought about setting some Weasley fireworks in the library. I’ve got a few hidden in my trunk, and it would be hilarious watching all the boring little studiers panicking.” She wiggled her eyebrows mischievously, only to quickly sober up. “We’d have to get around Petrov though. That woman can be bloody terrifying.” The Hogwarts librarian could certainly be motherly under all her bluster, but heaven help anyone who crossed her. And wreaking havoc in her precious library definitely fell in that category.
Mikko snatched Smudge away like Madison was on fire or something. That only heightened the anxiety building in Madi’s chest. Something was very, very wrong here. Her own wounded shoulder, mostly healed but still slightly tender at times, was starting to tingle as if in warning. Madison swallowed hard. Please Merlin, not that. Anything but that. Being in the attack herself had been terrifying enough. She could’ve died. Or lost Lydia. But if Mikko and Smudge had been there too…
Her train of thought was derailed by Mikko blurting out an answer that made absolutely no sense. “Then why isn’t he burned?” Madison fired back. She sounded angry, but it was only to cover her own fear. “I’m not stupid! Those aren’t dragon scratches! They’re were-” She drew herself up short, mouth snapping shut before she could give away too much. Her eyes were wide as she stared at her teammate. Those scars had to be recent if Smudge was still sore. And there hadn’t been any real werewolf incidents aside from Godric’s Hollow, so unless something had happened that Mikko had managed to keep secret… Madison’s hands had tightened into painful fists, her nails digging into her palms. She didn’t want to think about what had happened that night. And she especially didn’t want to think about Mikko and Smudge being there. But it was the only thing that made sense. “You…” Her throat had gone dry, making her voice suddenly scratchy. She swallowed hard and tried again, a slight tremor creeping into her voice. “You were there too. That night.” She instinctively drew her knees up onto the stone so she could pull them against her chest. In a sick way, she was almost relieved. There was someone else here who knew. Someone who understood what she was dealing with. But she also didn’t want anyone else having to deal with the burden she herself was trying to pretend didn’t exist. Least of all one of her good friends.

Mikko stuck his tongue out to Madi when she claimed to be more fun. “I bet you have food with you,” he figured it to be the reason why Smudge walked over. Often Mikko was sure that Smudge was just doing these things to get a reaction out of him, this cat really. “Oh I like that idea,” he nodded, approving of the plan. “You know a true prankster never backs down from a challenge. Challenges make it all the more fun. We can do this because we’re awesome.”
All happy talk was gone when the whole situation took a different turn. Madi was not buying his excuses which caused Toby to panic. He didn’t want to be reminded and he didn’t want to talk about this. It was as if the mere memory made the wounds on his chest ache again. The boy held Smudge close as if his life depended on the cat. Dark brown eyes shot to Madi and then turned away when she caught him. “Because- because…. T-the dragon was a non firebreathing kind?” His voice had lost its usual confidence especially when he thought Madi was going to say the word he hadn’t dared to speak since the attack occurred. Panic shot in his eyes and he would have told her to stop talking if she hadn’t decided to break off herself.
How did she even recognize the scars? Unless she’d seen them before of course and knew what they were. Madi made even less sense when she decided to ramble on. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Can we talk about the prank again?” He mumbled in a last feeble attempt to avoid having serious talks. Mikko disliked things that were unfun and this was among the highest unfun that recently happened. Then things started to fall in place in his slow mind. “Wait… What do you mean by too? Did anything happen?” Perhaps if Madi started off he’d feel comfortable telling his own story.

Truth be told, Madi did have a half-eaten bag of candy stuffed in one of her pockets. But she wasn’t about to tell Mikko that. Instead she just shrugged innocently. All traces of angelic aura were wiped away, however, as they began to discuss pranking. “Good point. Think we should wait for Wolf and Rhydian? They’d get a kick out of it.” Although the two lions getting a detention on their own would put them a step ahead in Wolf’s yearly game of who could cause the most trouble. “Wolf could be the distraction,” Madison said, barely holding back a laugh. Her fellow beater fancied himself quite the ladies’ man. And maybe he was with students. But Petrov could see clean through him, a fact that had spoiled more than one of the gang’s escapades.
Madi’s eyes were wide as her terrifying discovery settled in. Mikko had been in Godric’s Hollow that night. He’d been attacked by werewolves too. Did he get scratched? Was he having nightmares too? Somehow it never even crossed her mind to wonder if he had been bitten. Werewolves were bad and Mikko was good, and there was just no way the two could mix. Madi was still young enough that she could afford to hold such a black and white view. Although it might not last much longer given the world they lived in. Mikko didn’t seem to notice what she had implied, begging her to let him change the subject. Madison barely even heard him. Mikko had been there. He could have died. First she and her sister, and now her friend. It was like the whole world was suddenly going to pieces.
Things suddenly seemed to click in Mikko’s mind as he carefully asked after Madi’s own experience. The younger lion met his eyes, biting worriedly on her bottom lip. How was she supposed to tell him? She had barely even managed to talk about it with Lydia or Liza, and that had been when she was very much in need of telling someone. Madi opened and closed her mouth while she tried to figure out what to say. Finally she managed to utter a very quiet, “Werewolves.” Just the feeling of the word in her mouth made her want to curl up in a corner. She swallowed hard. “In Godric’s Hollow.” But he knew that of course. Either from the papers or from actually being there. “Me and Lydia… we got chased. One of them scratched me.” That was very much the condensed version. It had been far more terrifying, as Madi’s wide eyes and tight grip around her knees suggested, but that was all she could bring herself to say. At least until she knew Mikko understood.
“Were you… Did they get you?” It was more a plea than a question. She knew they had. They must have if they had gotten Smudge. Mikko would die before letting anyone hurt his cat. But as terrifying as it was to think about him being there that night, it would also mean that he understood what Madi was feeling right now. And in some twisted way, that made her feel just the tiniest bit better.

Mikko rose his eyebrow when Madi shrugged. She was just playing innocent, he knew that but he had no prove. He nodded and grinned however as they discussed the prank. “The more souls the more joy,” he said with a mischievous smirk on his face. He he trouble holding back a laughter when Madi suggested Wolf would serve as a distraction. “Poor Wolf, he might be a skirt chaser but he still has standards,” he chuckled as he couldn’t help it much longer. But he’d enjoy seeing his best mate struggle with Petrov. It’d be too funny.
Madi wasn’t listening, not really. She was drawing her own conclusions. Not that anyone would believe Mikko’s terrible lie. Then she said the word. The word which brought back the terrors of that night. Mikko’s brown eyes filled with fear and he held Smudge so tight that the cat began to growl. He let the cat go after being scratched. Sorry buddy, he thought but he couldn’t bring the words out. Mikko was too shocked with the things Madi said. Not because he’d never heard of it before. How could he not know if he had bloody been there. No it was because Madi knew about it too. And she assumed he knew. Then she dropped the information that she and her sister had been there.
His mouth felt dry, it was almost as if he tasted something sour and bitter. He couldn’t bring out a word until she told him she had been scratched. “Bloody Hell! Are you okay?” His eyes widened in worry. He bit his lip and looked at Smudge who had decided to roll up in between them. “I was… on my way to Nicole. The orphanage bored the hell out of me,” he said but his voice was almost a whisper. Which was very different from Mikko’s usual loud voice. “It happened before I knew it. I escaped at first but then one caught Smudge and I couldn’t- I couldn't leave him. I thought he was dead,” he said but his voice broke as he spoke of Smudge getting hurt. “It pinned me down and I was sure it was going to kill me but then I was saved,” he told her his gaze still on smudge. “They said I was lucky it only scratched me.”

Was she okay? That was a bit of a loaded question. Physically she was fine aside from a should that kept acting up at weird times. But otherwise… She was having nightmares and jumping at shadows. Sneaking into Liza’s room in the middle of the night because she couldn’t breathe. “I… I got my shoulder scratched. It hurt really bad. But I wasn’t bit, so… Maybe? I don’t know.” She bit her lip briefly before adding quietly, “No. Not really. Are you?”
Mikko had gotten pretty quiet too as he explained what had happened. He gave a little more detail, and Madison found herself saying more as well. “One of them pinned me down. I think… I think it was going to bite me. But Lydia blasted it or something. She got it off and got me to the hospital.” She rolled her scarred shoulder, a new habit that came out whenever she started thinking about the attack. “I think my shoulder’s mostly healed, but it still hurts sometimes. Where did it get you?” That wasn’t really what she wanted to know. She wanted to ask if she got nightmares too, if he froze up when shadows seemed to move, if the scars seemed to burn when someone touched them, if he woke up in the middle of the night feeling like he couldn’t breathe. But they were walking a fine line here and she didn’t want to push it just yet. They could start with the easier stuff first.
“Have you told anyone?” she asked carefully. She could see him telling Wolf maybe. But that was about it. “I told Liza. She was at the hospital when I was, so I sort of had to. And Olivia, the Hufflepuff? She knows. Her brother works at the hospital. He told her. But that’s it.” No one else knew. Probably why she was getting so many weird looked for skipping DADA class as often as she did. A few kids weren’t too fond of Professor Lupin being a werewolf, but most seemed alright with it. They just couldn’t see the problem. Not like Madi could. “I can’t stand to be around Lupin,” she blurted out. “It makes me nervous knowing there’s a… one of them here.” What the hell had McGonagall been thinking letting a werewolf teach here?

Mikko looked at Madison as she seemed hesitant to decide whether she was okay or not. That was enough for him to conclude that she wasn’t. He moved his hand to her lower arm and squeezed it for support. Right now he didn’t know what he could do or say, he wasn’t good at handling these kind of situations. When his question was returned, he blinked up. “Huh? Me? Eh I think so. Better than then anyways. I’m glad Smudge is alive,” he said as he scratched the cat behind his ears.
He bit the inside of his cheek when Madi gave more detail on her experience. It felt weird knowing she had been there too. “Damn,” he mumbled as he couldn’t move his eyes away from her. Despite that he wanted to say comforting words, he couldn’t. Mikko had avoided serious conversations for most of his life. Then he was asked where he was hurt by the werewolf. For a moment he hesitated but then he unbuttoned his shirt. This wasn’t anything new to those who knew Mikko. He tended to try to walk around without a shirt during summers as he wasn’t used to the warm temperature. That until a teacher or prefect caught him. This time his fit body was marked in big lashes starting from his collarbone all the way down to his pelvis. “Hmm I suppose no more sexy times,” he mumbled as he touched his scar but flinched as it hurt. He’d always slept on his front but since the attack he only slept on his side or back. It hurt too much. He quickly closed his shirt up again. “But maybe people dig battle scars,” he shrugged trying to keep it cool like always. It wasn’t much of a battle really, he was already defeated before he could even do something.
The dragon lover shook his head. “Nicole knows, but we haven’t really talked about it,” he admitted. Mikko didn’t want to talk about it, he hoped that the nightmares would disappear in time. But the dementor attack had only made things worse. He gazed up when Madi told him she shared it with her friend. “How did she take it?” He wanted to know before he’d even consider telling Wolf, his best friend.
Smudge laid down in the grass and decided to take a nap. Mikko looked at him before he sighed and leaned back to gaze up to the sky. “Lupin is alright I guess. At least he seems like a good guy during the day, like he really tries not to hurt anyone.” Still Mikko always felt a cold shiver running down his spine when he passed the man in the hallway. “Then there is Turner, the kid from the orphanage. I don’t get why they even bothered picking him from the streets. Maybe I sound like an ass but some people are beyond saving, he is a wild dog.” His face turned into a frown when he thought of the younger Gryffindor. “He got kicked out because he threatened a nanny, or so I heard. And now he is in our common room.” Sure he and Turner never could stand to be in the same room. The guy was way too tense, moody and snappy. But Mikko hadn’t disliked the guy for being a werewolf until now. Whenever he saw Turner, the image of the werewolf that attacked him appeared. “Who knows maybe he was even part of it. He is scary enough.”

Mikko put a hand on her arm, and Madi placed her own hand atop his. It helped somehow knowing he understood. He didn’t sound too sure himself though. What a pair they made. Both a wreck and neither quite able to admit it. “Alive is good.” It was a rather sorry state of affairs when that was the best they could do.
The sight of Mikko’s scars made Madi swallow hard. She couldn’t really see her own without a mirror because of where they were, but they looked a lot like Mikko’s. Although no one outside of her family and the hospital healers had seen them. How did the saying go? Show me yours, I’ll show you mine? Madi swung both her legs to the same side of the ledge so she was sitting sideways and reached around with her right arm to tug the back of her collar down and to the left so Miko could see the tops of the harsh scars that stretched across her shoulder and part of her back. “Guess it’s a good thing it wasn’t my dominant arm,” she said drily. That would’ve made a real mess out of Quidditch. She tugged her shirt back into place and resettled her back against the cool stone. At any other time, Mikko’s comment about scars would’ve made her smile. But now she just shrugged. “Supposedly they do.”
Madi shrugged. “Alright, I guess. She was super worried. You know how Liza is. She can get pretty protective. And huggy.” Not that Madison minded the hugs. They were actually pretty welcome given what she had gone through over the summer. “But she’s been good about it. She hasn’t pushed me too much or anything. And she’s been there when I needed it.” Like when the nightmares got messy. Madi shrugged. “It’s nice having her around, but it’s just different. It’s hard to understand when they weren’t there.”
Lupin was a bit of a mixed subject with Madison. On one hand, he really did seem like a decent enough human being. Liza kept insisting he was no threat. But Madi couldn’t help her hair standing on end every time she was around him. Every time she saw the scars on his face, all she could think of was her own scars and how she had gotten them. She was about to say as much when Mikko mentioned Turner. Madi frowned. What did that bully have to do with this? But Mikko kept talking, and the words coming out of his mouth seemed to suck all the air out of her lungs. What the hell. “Turner’s one of them?” How in the world had she missed that? He was violent, always snapping and pushing kids around. Madison had just assumed he was just naturally an ass. But now… Now it made sense. “Bloody hell.” There was a werewolf in her common room. She swallowed hard. She knew kids in fourth year. Kids who had to share a room with Turner. Lupin was one thing. At least he could keep up an appearance of controlling himself. But Turner? The kid was a menace even when it wasn’t a full moon. “How can they just let him run around knowing he’s like that? He’s going to hurt someone.” It was a miracle Turner hadn’t landed someone in the hospital wing already. His very existence seemed to prove the Ministry’s point. Werewolves were dangerous. If people wanted to bitch and whine about them being treated humanely, fine. But they didn’t need to be around kids. Especially not when they were so clearly dangerous.
