Bat wasn't the least physically coordinated at Hogwarts, but he was far from the best. Being as blind as his animal namesake and a bit prone to distraction, organized sports weren't quite his thing; he liked swimming because prescription goggles were a thing (you couldn't lose them if they were strapped to your head!!) and he liked to dance, though he wasn't the best at it, just for the sake of enjoyment. However, Dueling was another matter. It required coordination and timing, and it also required his glasses to stay on his face. " Are you sure about this?" he squeaked at Jasmine Watson , who looked entirely too enthusiastic about this assignment. Jas was a ball of energy, anyways, and he had no doubt that she delighted in chucking pillows at people often, just as she was very talented on the Quidditch pitch. Her reflexes were probably fine. His, however... Bat wrinkled his nose, toying with the feather that he held. " Here goes, I guess," he mumbled, and swish-and-flicked his wand, resulting in the feather floating timidly into the air. He adjusted his glasses and narrowed his eyes at Jasmine, trying to think of a defensive spell. Currently, his mind was blank. Bat sighed lightly, causing the feather to wiggle in his noisy gust of air. " Go?"

Jasmine was a ball of energy. She bounced on the tips of her toes, weight shifting foot to foot. "Yeah! It's going to be brilliant!" Jasmine encouraged with a nod, bouncing her mass of tangled mass of curls. "You'll do fine, don't worry." She paused her bouncing long enough to stretch out her arms, just like she would do before quidditch. It might not be much help in the long run, but the assignment they were about to do felt more physical than the rest. They weren't going to just read something out of a book or name bright dots in the sky, they were actually going to use magic. The sixth year wasn't worried about the assignment herself, dueling just felt like something that she would be good at. It fit her, if she did say so herself. Jasmine was a fighter.
Bat looked apprehensive with the way he wrinkled his nose and regarded the feather. Jasmine pulled her wand from where it was stashed in her back pocket, giving it a spin between her fingers before she held it at the ready, just when Bat was resigning himself to the assignment. "It'll be fun, you'll see!" Jas would do her best to enthuse him, but she couldn't make him enjoy the assignment like she was about to. Dueling was becoming her favorite class and she was eager to do well in it. What wasn't to love? She got to stare at a professional keeper (or former professional) and chuck pillows at people. This person happened to be a Ravenclaw she liked a lot. Bat was sweet and his glasses were a little nerdy but she liked them all the same.
When Bat cued her to go, Jas propped a hand up on her hip and 'Hmm'd as she considered the best way to toss a pillow at her partner. She didn't want to go all out like she might with someone like Madi, but she was sure that Bat was capable even if he didn't look like he felt confident. "Alright." she said, nodding and running her previously propped hand through her curls. "I've got it." Grabbing the pillow and literally tossing it into the air, the Gryffindor banished the pillow towards the Ravenclaw with a flourish of her wand.

He really tried, you know. He had a spell in mind and everything to arrest the pillow's progress towards his face, he really did. Jasmine encouraged him, and Bat couldn't help but smile in response to her bouncing, bright self, shaking out his hands and getting ready to go. "We'll see," he muttered in response, flicking up an eyebrow in sardonic amusement. "10 knuts that you have to repair my glasses by the end of the day..."
Jas was very enthusiastic - a little too enthusiastic for someone he was about to trust to fling a pillow at his face. He managed a grin in response, though, as Jasmine spun her wand around gleefully, and then managed to focus on the best way to fling a pillow at him. Not at the face, he thought, not at the face. The feather wobbled a little and he sighed gustily, refocusing with effort. "Whenever you're ready," he said, and then watched as Jasmine threw the pillow upwards and Banished it his way.
The next events were not Bat's proudest moments. The pillow flying his way resulted in no action other than a slack mouth as he watched it arc through the air. When he remembered what he was supposed to be doing, Bat squeaked "Merlin!", and summarily dropped his wand and the feather to put his hands up between him and the pillow. It thumped into his forearms and dropped, leaving a crouching Bat and all the tools for their assignment on the floor. Bat peeked up at Jasmine, sheepish. "... uh..." he started, tentatively. "I think my reflexes need work."

Jasmine did well banishing her pillow, if you asked her. It flew true without too much force behind it but Bat still froze. He watched the pillow approach with a blank look that Jasmine thought might mean he was too scared to function. His survival instincts kicked in and instead of defending himself he dropped his only weapon against the oncoming pillow and squealed. The poor Ravenclaw looked sheepish after all was said and done and Jas pursed her lips and re-propped a hand on her hip.
"I suppose so." she agreed with a nod, tapping a finger against her cheek as she thought. The assignment surely wasn't going to work if he was going to cower in fear whenever the pillow was chucked at him. Jasmine caught her lower lip between her teeth, gaze shifting down. They could work this out, she was pretty smart (if you asked her) and Bat was a Ravenclaw. Their combined brain power should be able to come up with something. After a moment of thought, an idea brightened her face.
"I've got it!" she exclaimed, clapping her hands together. "You just need practice reacting to it! Maybe if I throw it at you and slow it down, so you have more time to react? Then you'll get used to it and it won't scare you as much?" She tilted her head along with the question, watching his response closely.

Bat usually wasn't this terrible at physical things. He liked swimming, for example, though the fact that you could get prescription goggles that didn't fall off your face was quite possibly a contributing factor towards this. However, the act of repelling a pillow had stymied him, and Bat, as he crouched on the ground with a remorseful expression and the pillow sitting forlornly in front of him, gave a tiny little sigh of woe.
However, he wasn't going to let a pillow conquer him. He was no quitter. And Jasmine was an excellent friend, who was quite thoughtfully considering ways and means to conclude their assignment without him dropping the ball (or pillow) every time. "Practice?" he asked, picking himself, the pillow, the feather and his wand off the ground, "I guess that makes sense. We could try that." Bat eyed the pillow thoughtfully. "Okay, let's try that. But you should have a turn right away too." he didn't want his reflexes, or lack thereof, to slow Jasmine down.
He tossed the pillow gently in Jasmine's direction, then flicked his wand deftly, bringing the (slightly mangled) feather into the air once more. His glance flickered to Jasmine once more and he pushed his glasses up his nose, already apologizing to them for the likely nosedive that was about to occur. "Ready!" he proclaimed, though it was more like a mumble as his gaze flickered between the feather and the pillow, determined not to flinch.
