Kisuke Kisaragi (formerly Kisuke Amano) |
Shop Owner - Café la Vie / 31 years old, born February 9th / Muggleborn / Male |
Happily Married || Hetrosexual |
APPEARANCE
Played by Naohito Fujiki (link)
DESCRIPTION: Kisuke has a lean build and slightly tan complexion; while his height is average for standard Japanese men, it's considered short with respect to a typical British male. His tousled hair is of a natural brown rather than the more common full-black among generic Asians; his face is diamond-shaped with dark eyes and thin lips. Kisuke often dresses casually - he has a preference for autumn-themed top wear such as jumpers, sweaters, cardigans or hoodie, which goes with a pair of jeans, and complete with boots for his shoes.
PERSONALITY
POSITIVE TRAITS: Kisuke is a man with composure and a lot of self-control - his quiet demeanor gives off a comforting and peaceful vibe without the need for words or even spells to diffuse tensions between people; his mere presence was enough to silence the whole room at times. Hence, he often becomes the peacemaker between his strict, no-nonsense wife and cheeky, rebellious son; he is also a great listener, the go-to for Miyu whenever the little boy needs some advice. If one is able to gain his trust, you can expect him to return that with unwavering loyalty. He is polite and patient, because he believes that everyone deserves some form of basic respect, regardless of their background. Kisuke also values hard work and knowledge, and he spares no effort to constantly improve himself to be a better person for his family.
NEGATIVE TRAITS: While Kisuke may have a calming presence, that doesn't mean that you can trample on his kindness and take him for guaranteed; in fact, getting on his bad side is the last thing you'd ever want to do. He doesn't hold grudges over petty things, but he won't hesitate to pay back tenfold if you ever betray his trust for you, and you won't get that trust back, ever. Beneath the nice smile he's not as gentle and sweet as you think - he is more apathetic than he appears to be, and he won't go out of his way to help people unless it involves his precious family or those who truly matter to him, such as his own son. Some may view him as being selfish, but to the man, he's merely being practical, as he is painfully aware of his own limitations and weaknesses (it's impossible to save everyone or the whole world, anyway - he isn't like Harry Potter). He's more than happy to just watch from the sidelines and maintain his neutral stand than throwing himself into unnecessary troubles. It doesn't help that he tends to have a cynical view of the world and people around him - he doesn't trust anyone easily, and he feels that whatever everyone does is for personal gain more than anything else, rather than things like honor, justice, et cetera. He has a sharp eye for people, which in turn makes him rather judgmental towards others, though he has enough sense to keep those snide thoughts just to himself.
LIKES: Kisuke immediately falls in love with Quidditch when he got to play as Chaser for his school team in Mahoutokoro, more than he's old passion for muggle sports like soccer and baseball - well, who can resist the thrill of shooting off through the sky on a fast broom? He's cool with alcohol - he does drink beer and wine with Yuko over meals - but he's still more of a coffee addict, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee every morning is more than enough to start off his day on a good note. A fan of classical and instrumental music; he also plays the saxophone casually. Above all else, he is someone who loves to have some quiet alone time away from the social hubbub; and of course, to spend more time with his own family!
DISLIKES: Kisuke greatly dislikes loud, irritating, and unnecessary noises. This may come off as strange given his working place where the ambient sound of human crowd is prevalent, but as long as the customers don't make too much fuss and create a scene in the store, Kisuke is a pretty chill guy. It's also the reason why he'd rather keep tabs on sports news rather than watching the matches live. Also, as mentioned in the 'Negative Traits' section, Kisuke absolutely despises betrayers and disloyalty. Oh, another thing - don't you dare hurt his family, or you'll get a taste of his wrath... and he's not gonna hold back, at all.
HOBBIES: Quidditch (mostly just keeping up with the World Cup news), cooking, 'armchair traveling' (a classier way to say reading, duh), listening to music, playing the saxophone, origami (more details in 'Magical Abilities' section).
GENERAL PERSONALITY: Kisuke considers his alignment that of a True Neutral - as mentioned in his 'Negative Traits' section, he is no hero and feels no obligation to extend a helping hand to other people or get himself into unwanted troubles, preferring to mind his own business as much as possible. Less about morality, and more about how he just doesn't have much motivation to butt his head into other people's troubles unless his family's well-being is involved. His vast knowledge and sharp wits make him a rather wise person. However, he's not really someone you'd go to if you want any advice or for comfort; rather than giving a direct answer, he tends to be more vague and cryptic with his words.
BIOGRAPHY
Parents: Ryutaro Amano, Erika Amano
Siblings: Kira Amano (33, muggle)
Partner: Yuko Kisaragi
Children: Miyu Kisaragi (11)
Other Family: Megumi Kisaragi (mother-in-law)
Character History: Born in Yokohama, the largest city in the Kanegawa Prefecture in Japan, Kisuke came to the world and grew up in a normal loving family, living a normal life. Messing around with his elder brother Kira (either they fooled around together or ended up getting into childish fights), later on going to muggle elementary school - each day was a repeat of the mundane routine to the young boy's boring life, but as long as he was happy, his family was all he needed.
...Until that fateful day.
The brothers were on their way home from school, and Kira suggested that they took a detour to a convenience store and get some snacks to munch on. Kisuke was overjoyed - who wouldn't be? It was a treat from his older bro! That happiness was quickly turned into horror as a motorbike sped towards the pair while they were crossing the road. Kira pushed the stunned Kisuke out of the way and took the hit... It was a miracle that Kira was still alive, but he was paralyzed waist down for the rest of his life. Kira never once blamed his younger sibling for how things had turned out this way; deep down, Kisuke still continued to blame himself for crippling not just his elder brother's body, but also his future. Notice of enrollment into a magical institution was the second blow to Kisuke's regret towards Kira. At first he was reluctant to go... then he thought: if muggle treatments couldn't heal Kira's paralysis, maybe he could try to find a cure using magical means. That could be a way for him to repent for his 'sin'.
He experienced difficulty with magic when he first started off in Mahoutokoro; for one, unlike most of the students who began magical education as early as aged seven, he only joined the school like the other 'latecomers', as the institution only switch to boarding-school style when the students were ten years old. He later on discovered that he was better with defensive than offensive spells, and he was even selected to play for the school's Quidditch team as a Chaser! It was also at Mahoutokoro that he met his girl - Yuko Kisaragi. No, it wasn't your cheesy 'love-at-first-sight' nonsense; no teenage angsty stuff often dramatized in romantic fictions either (do note that Asians are generally more conserved than Westerners, so no wet snogging, sorry). In fact, it was as boring as stated in Miyu's app - they pretty much friend-zoned each other. Kisuke would help Yuko with theory work and flying, while Yuko would teach him how to duel and impart some techniques of Onmyodo to him. They only started to date each other seriously in their fifth year, when Mahoutokoro threw a ball event to host the Chinese and South Korean wizarding students for a triennial exchange program between the Far East magic schools... and yes, they had asked each other out for the dance. Oh, Yuko had a crush on him even before the dance thing, but the apathetic Kisuke was too slow to realize her feelings for him. (Okay, maybe not as boring as I had claimed... but more would be developed in their short story arc.)
Anyway, the real drama began after he and Yuko graduated from Mahoutokoro.
Yuko had pushed to get married on Kisuke's eighteenth birthday; the latter agreed, though he was curious why Yuko seemed to be in a rush to tie the red knot* between them. Later on he finally understood, that it was all part of Yuko's plan to make sure her family would accept their marriage, to prevent her parents from trying to separate them and marry her off to some other guy the clan had chosen for her (whom she had no feelings for). It did work, but at the cost of a sour relationship with the members of Kisaragi House. Even after the name change, he was never welcomed in the clan, scorned for his 'inferior' blood (yes, prejudice of pure-bloods against muggleborns also existed in the Asian wizarding community). The tension reached its peak when Yuko gave birth to a boy, much to the clan's exasperation. Unable to stand the politics and power struggles within the Kisaragi House, Kisuke convinced Yuko to take the still-infant Miyu along and fled to Britain with the help of a mysterious contact from there, cutting ties with the Kisaragi's completely to protect the Yuko and Miyu from their unjust wrath.
About five or so years passed rather peacefully for them after they settled down in Chinatown, in the muggle part of London. They had to go into 'hiding' for awhile (with the help of their mysterious contact) when Voldemort and his Death Eaters terrorized UK that later led to the Second Wizarding War. Kisuke and Yuko didn't exactly refrain themselves from sufficing little Miyu's curiosity about the world around him, both muggle and magical, but they would keep their stories vague, only to make the young boy wonder more about the things his parents were hiding from him...
Kisuke and Yuko were astonished that their son got accepted at Hogwarts, but they didn't see harm in sending him to study Western magic just like they did when they were young, and hopefully he would one day be able to succeed them in creating a new form of magical art from hybridizing European magic with Asian. While Miyu was away trying to get used to his school life at Britain's famed magical school, Kisuke had some matters to sort out... on his own.
*In Asian culture (especially Chinese; also, many traditional Korean and Japanese cultures are derived from Ancient Chinese culture), the phrase 'tying the red knot' is synonym to the term 'marriage' in the European and Western world.
MISCELLANY
Wand: Kingwood and unicorn hair, 11 inches, reasonably supple
Former School: Mahoutokoro
Affiliation: Neutral
Amortentia: Freshly-brewed coffee, especially espresso (it makes him feel calm), sake (reminds him of his homeland - and precious wife)
Magical Abilities:
- Apparation || Well, of course.
- Occlumency || His high level of self-restraint allows him to master this difficult Western magical art with more ease than most people do. That doesn't mean that his brain is impregnable - if one manages to break through his defense, they will realize that he isn't good at conjuring false mental images to manipulate and trick the mind-reader. Inversely, he has little to no affinity for the art of Legilimency.
- Onmyodo || For the technical details, please refer to Miyu's app.
Kisuke is obviously better than his son but nowhere as gifted as his wife. Kisuke is most apt at casting this magic using origami as his medium as opposed to the kirigami (lit. paper-cutting) style that Yuko and Miyu employ. Similar to Miyu, Kisuke is able to give crude 'life' to inanimate, non-organic objects (again, do not confuse this with Creation!), but he can animate multiple things at once, even leaving them to move around autonomously for a short while until the magic wears off. He and Yuko have also experimented on combining limited Western magic with Onmyodo to give more variety and flexibility to the techniques they can use, but it doesn't always work well as both are different branches of magic.
- Although I stated his occupation is a shop owner of his own cafe, I don't have any plans whatsoever to set up a board/thread just for his shop at the moment (located in Muggle London) because he will be more of a wild card character in the plots, so I guess he might possibly be grouped under Misc Jobs?
- I left the 'mysterious contact' part vague, to see how he can get involved with the main site plot.
- It sounds odd that his brother, Kira, isn't mentioned much in the 'Character History' section due to the following problem I have. I contemplated about bringing Kira over to St. Mungo's to treat/cure his paralysis through magical means. Kisuke may be a wizard, but Kira is a muggle, so I'm not sure if this is feasible and therefore I didn't include it into the backstory stuff, to clarify with the awesome founders first before going further.
