DESCRIPTION: Jonathan, or Jon, is the kind of guy you might want to photograph for your romance novel cover or calendar pin-ups, despite the four-times broken nose and perpetually messy hair. Tall, fair, and with a set of very nice teeth he uses to smile at everyone, Jon likes to say he's just growing into his charm at age 35. He definitely won't blame you if you swoon a little bit. Though he's not a particular athlete, he keeps healthy and strong enough between working and bar fights, and though he might tell you he has a tattoo somewhere, he's never actually gotten one because he hates needles. His expression is usually one of three things - a smile, brooding, or resigned, with most things prompting the first, internal conflict prompting the second, and dealing with family

LIKES: Gardening, digging in the dirt, wandering off on long walks through nature, making friends, learning how to make new drinks, inventing new drinks, his family, bossing around his younger siblings, hugging his younger siblings whether they want it or not, charming people, he's also a big fan of kissing, but when he's not charming people he's likely to be found nurturing plants or animals.
DISLIKES: When people hurt others- intentionally or no, being called 'junior', winter because one can only garden so much indoors in Britain, bullies, people who make others uncomfortable, when people look down on his work and ask him what his goals in life are, hurt animals, talking about people dying, people dying, dealing with dying people, and flies that bite.
HOBBIES: Becoming one with the dirt (gardening), planting things, nurturing plants, building things with his hands and forgetting he has a wand, testing new drinks, fiddling with whittling or tiny bits of leather and metalwork, seeking out cuddle buddies, bossing his siblings around, do we see a theme here yes we do, resisting the urge to adopt many pets, climbing trees, getting absolutely lost.
GENERAL PERSONALITY:
Jon is generally a relaxed, friendly personality. He doesn't stress much about the direction of his life or worry about what he might or might not have, instead choosing to pursue a happy equilibrium of bartending, gardening and working with his hands, along with enjoying the company of his family and hopefully a little romance mixed in. He's a glass-half-full kind of person, choosing to enjoy small things in life. As such, he can get frustrated when that perspective is questioned or his equilibrium threatened.
He's a very charming kind of guy, with an attitude seen in many Westerns or romance novels; the rough-around the edges, honest charmer with a heart of gold. He's very at home as a bartender and has no grander aspirations- and why would he? He's young, pretty and friendly, and fits in to any group very nicely.
He does have a side that isn't all sunshine and rainbows, though it's rare for any expression other than a smile to be seen on his face. His family is privy to more of his faces: bossy older sibling who thinks he knows better, brooding when he gets a rare bad mood, frustrated when his worldview or ambitions are questioned or people lash out needlessly. Jon is stubborn in his own way, and it would take a lot to change his mind on certain points. Overall, though, he's a good guy to know- a good friend, a good song, and good in a bar fight.

Character History:
Jon was the first child born to Jon and Marigold Ashland, right at the family homestead. It was obvious who he took after from the very first day, with his blonde hair and wide smile echoing his mother. For the few years that he was the only Ashland baby (well, of that branch of Ashlands - there were quite a lot of them), he was doted upon, and learned to love the many things Ashlands love: family, gardening, grounds, and animals. Jon was an adventurous child, often wandering off to the far reaches of their home before coming back with his hands and nose covered in dirt, scraped knees and a big smile. When Theo came along, Jon was thrilled - someone else to explore with! From that day on, he dragged Theo around, taking his duties as an older brother and as an explorer (with a new sidekick) very seriously. Despite the fact that Theo was
Meg was born six years after Theo, and both of them were instantly smitten with the little blonde. Unfortunately, Jon's plans to take both the new baby and the middle child exploring were interrupted by the sad passing of his mother, very shortly after Meg was born. Jon, who had been taught his entire life that family was the most important thing, ever, was devastated by the news. He wasn't sure what to do with himself. For the first little while Theo actually took it better than Jon did, to everyone's general mystification, as Jon would retreat to somewhere on the grounds and return covered in twigs and dirt but looking a little happier. By the time Theo started lashing out, Jon had managed to at least appear as though he'd gotten over the loss of his mum, and served as a genial punching bag for Theo's mood swings and a good babysitter for little Meg whenever he could steal her away from the hordes of doting Adult Ashlands.
Jon turned eleven that year and received his letter to Hogwarts. It couldn't have come at a worse time, because Jon did not want to go to school and be buried in a stone castle for the next seven years of his life, but unfortunately (in his mind) he wasn't able to stay at home. It was probably better for him, actually, because it forced him to meet people who were not Ashlands and not be in the same space every day. He was Sorted into Gryffindor with remarkable promptitude and after a few misses started making friends.
Teenage Jon grew into his looks with a vengeance, charming everyone with a very wide smile and messy blonde locks. He also grew into himself, making friends, standing up for people... but still remained close to his roots, with Herbology being his best subject, and never mind about the rest of them as long as plants were around. He was about average in terms of grades, but left the school with a number of lasting friendships. He'd never had a massive amount of ambition, perfectly comfortable with working with his hands and with people, and became a bartender very shortly after school in a Muggle club.
A lot of people jumped into new and exciting careers or left to travel the world, but Jon wasn't particularly interested in either of those things; he was having a good time right where he was and he personally enjoyed working with his hands to having a fancy title like Grand High Minister of Pomperosity or whatever his classmates were bragging about. His family supported him and he spent his years making friends, lovers and the occasional enemy, as well as working in various bars. Eventually he managed to interview with the notorious Leaky Cauldron, and claimed a coveted position there just before the second Wizarding War - he occasionally toyed with the idea of creating his own woodworking curiosities or learning about the art of metal, but he was truly happy where he was and the ambitions never fell much beyond little trinkets and things to do with his hands when it was slow at the Cauldron.
When the second Wizarding War became a reality, Jon was unimpressed. He didn't like bullies, but he also had approximately zero desire to face his own mortality (let alone worry about the rest of his family's lives), and that was what made him retreat to the Ashland homestead, keeping close to home and wary about strangers (something difficult for the friendly Jon to do). A lot of the tension between Jon and Theo can probably be traced to this time, as Jon was more overbearing and stubborn as an older sibling than ever, less likely to indulge Theo in his mood swings. Meg probably was also a bit stifled, but as Meg was and is less likely to punch Jon in the face, their relationship didn't change. Aside from one or two arguments with overzealous Snatchers, though, the Second War passed Jon by.
He returned to the Leaky easily, and also picked up a groundskeeping job, feeling a bit restless for a reason he couldn't define - perhaps it was the new, relative freedom, or the fact that he was getting older, or maybe that he'd just spent the last year in very close proximity with his family. Whatever the reason, the gardening and manual work helped ease those feelings. Recently, while Theo has been very much in the spotlight, Jon has been feeling increasingly restless, and actually thought of moving out of the Homestead during the house arrest (only to be horrified at the very idea and shaking it off, thinking it was just dealing with a moody wand-less Theo that made him feel that way). In the future, he'd like to work out what to do about this, if he gets that off the ground, and maybe work on trying to be more understanding with Theo and, as always, spoiling the heck out of Meg.
