If the Quidditch match last weekend had shown Hayden anything, it was that Toby was most definitely upset with her. And that bothered her. She didn’t have many friends. Mostly just Helena Ravenclaw and Mikko and Toby. (And Ari, but the guidance counselor was a different story.) Although it was questionable whether her friendships with the two Gryffindors even counted. She and Mikko had really just bonded over being some of the oldest kids at the orphanage, a fact that no longer held. And Hayden’s relationship with Toby had mostly revolved around them sitting next to each other while she drew or read. It might not count as a traditional friendship, but it was one of the only ones Hayden had. Especially at school. Except now Toby could barely stand to look at her. And it hurt. She had figured it might take him some time to get over her adoption. Hayden probably would’ve felt a little abandoned herself if the situation was reversed. But Toby was straight up avoiding her. Half his house had turned against him, and apparently he had still preferred being alone to Hayden’s company. The Ravenclaw was at a loss. How was she supposed to fix this? Well, today she was going to give it her best effort. Alec Wayland was turning into something of a pen pal of late (the press would probably have a field day with him writing a former orphan if they knew), and Hayden had asked him for something he had seemed happy enough to give. Actually, he had gone above and beyond. Not only was there a signed photograph but a signed beater’s bat as well. Toby had definitely perked up while watching the Hogsmeade match. At least until he saw Hayden. And Alec’s performance in particular had seemed to hold his attention, so Hayden was desperately hoping the package she was carrying would be enough to get him to stop being upset with her. She doubted it. Nothing was ever simple with Toby. But she was feeling more alone than ever with worries about the adoption rolling around in her brain, and she really didn’t need Toby giving her more reasons to stress herself out. She finally managed to track him down in a nook off a rarely used hallway near the courtyard. Actually it was Helena who located Toby, but the ghost was happy to help Hayden out. Alec’s package was clutched firmly in the Ravenclaw’s hand as she turned the corner to the find the hallway abruptly ending in a small nook of sorts with a window. Toby was sitting on the ground beside the window. Hayden paused briefly at the sight of him, trying to decide what to say. But then she gathered her resolve and walked straight up to Toby. “You’re avoiding me,” she said bluntly. “And I don’t really know why. I don’t know if I did something or if you’re just upset at me for leaving you behind. Which I didn’t because we’re both here for the school year now, so I’ll actually see you even more than when I lived at the orphanage. But whatever I did, I’m sorry, okay?” She held out the package containing the autographed picture and beater’s bat. “I got you something, and I’m hoping it’ll make you a little less upset with me. Just please stop avoiding me?” Toby might not be her friend exactly, but Hayden missed sitting quietly with him beside her. And considering how much everything in her life was changing right now, she desperately needed that consistency. @julia7 (OOC - I don't really care where this goes. Angst, sweetness, whatever. I just had an idea and went with it.)

Even if he had returned to the Gryffindor tower for bed rest, he still stayed away from it whenever he could. Toby had ruined it for himself. Sometimes he wondered why the sorting hat even put him in Gryffindor. All the people he liked hanging around with were Ravenclaws. But the hat didn’t sort friend based it seemed. Well he still got Pat, the little dove he found this July. The small bird sat in on his head and had made itself comfortable nestled in Toby’s thick black hair. Sometimes Tobias prefered being alone. Peace was something he needed to progress all the crazy things that were going on. He found a place on the ground floor where it was quiet. The Gryffindor wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to do. He had brought a drawing pad with a pencil and a eraser. But he also brought the Ministry’s letter as he still had to decide what to do. It didn’t feel like he had much of a choice. If he wanted to stay in Hogwarts he should get himself registered. Just how did one do that? He couldn’t really go to the ministry to do it.
He sighed as he held the letter and put it back in his cloak. Sketching seemed like a better plan. That was if he could get some inspiration. The boy stared at the plain white sketch book as if he hoped a sketch would appear out of itself. Whenever he was doing stuff like this he always had to think of Hayden. That girl didn’t seem to realize what was important. She had been bloody adopted! This time in a good stable family where she was almost certain of a permanent stay. It didn’t seem to get through with her at all. This was her chance on a normal and good life. And yet instead of taking this chance to bound with her new siblings and make some good friends, she was there at the Quidditch game. He didn’t understand this girl at all, it wasn’t as if they were friends.
Toby had closed himself off in his own little world, daydreaming even. He hadn’t noticed the footsteps or he would have gotten up and left already. She was already standing in front of him when he noticed her. You’re avoiding me. The words snapped him awake causing the Gryffindor to look up in bewilderment. The moment he saw Hayden, Toby immediately turned around to face the window to gaze outside. Now and then he took a peek to her reflection in the window but he never really faced her. Pat woke up but decided to turn around and continue sleeping. Silence was the route Tobias choose, he didn’t say a word in the hope she would leave. But she didn’t instead she continued to ramble. Hayden decided to give it all out at once. Toby bit his cheek and tried to shut it out but failed. “We should stop hanging around,” he eventually said, ignoring the package. “It’s better that way. You get to spend time with your new family, make some friends and build a future.” There was no future where Tobias was going. The Ministry was going to prevent that from happening. Hanging around an outcast like him didn’t help your overall popularity in school either. He tried to smile at Hayden’s reflection but his eyes were sad. Despite how badly Toby wanted to say he was not upset with her, he was. Just knowing Hayden couldn’t do anything about it made him only feel bad about himself. He felt jealous and abandoned. Every time he thought something was there people decided to leave him behind. It had happened way too many times already.

This wasn’t going well at all. Toby could barely even look at her, preferring to stare out the window like she wasn’t even there. And then he said they should stop hanging out. Hayden frowned in confusion. Toby might not be the warmest person ever, but he had never outright denied her company. So why would he now? Because of the O’Briens, apparently. “I don’t want other friends,” Hayden informed him, completely oblivious to the fact she was implying that she and Toby were exactly that. “Those kids haven’t wanted to be my friends for four years. And so I have a family now. So what? That’s for summers and Christmases. But right now I’m here. And you’re here. So what’s wrong with us both being in the same place?” Why did it feel like she was banging her head against a wall? Was this how Ari had felt when Hayden had gotten so mad at her after the Eye?
Seeing that he wasn’t going to take the package, Hayden let her arm fall back to her side. Then she sighed. She could talk all day about intellectual subjects, but discussing her feelings wasn’t exactly her forte. She glanced out the window, chewing briefly at her lip before continuing. “Everything’s just changing really fast, and it still feels like it could all far apart. And I just need something to stay the same.” She needed things to be okay with her and Toby. Maybe because he didn’t have anywhere else to go. Maybe knowing that made it easier to believe he wouldn’t walk out. That he would stay consistent even if everything else went to pieces. Or maybe Hayden just plain missed his silent presence.
In a sudden surge of defiance, she stepped forward and dropped the package with the autographed picture and bat right into his lap. Then she put her back against the wall opposite Toby and slid to the ground. She crossed her arms stubbornly over her chest. “I’m not leaving until you open it,” she informed him. If he could look at the picture and bat and still be upset with her, then she would know things were definitely bad.

‘Other friends’, that saying caught Tobias off guard. He was puzzled and it showed on his face. What did she mean by ‘other friends’? The Gryffindor gazed up and used their reflections to look her in the eye a light sparkle of hope was present before he flustered and sort of deflated. His head hung and he hugged his knees. It probably was a slip up, he told himself. She didn’t mean it like that, stop getting hopes. Half of what she’d said afterward had been missed until he regained control of his thoughts again. “Don’t worry, I probably won’t be here for long,” he mumbled as he looked at the grass outside. His hand slid unintentionally to the pocket where he had the letter pocketed. Would she still want to have contact with him when things weren’t that easy anymore? He doubted it.
And there it was. Hayden wasn’t the best person in speaking her mind. Tobias should have known that but he was already so fed up with her that it slipped him. He interpreted her words completely different from what she probably meant. “Oh,” he said coldly. His eyes that had been sad turned to anger and frustration. “You know, for a moment you actually had me thinking that you liked spending time with me. But it seems you just need something to stay the same.” His voice dripped from bitterness. It was perhaps good that they weren’t facing each other right now. For he had a scary look on his face. This hit him deep, perhaps deeper than the words actually should. “Guess what this thing doesn’t stay the same. I can’t even hold this form for a whole month.” Toby’s scary look was now turned towards himself. He gazed at his hand, a human hand but it had looked different before. The streets had changed him, three weeks had been enough to make him more hostile than ever.
“Oi!” The Gryffindor yelled when something heavy and hard was dropped on him. It hadn’t really hurt, a small bruise was nothing compared to his usual injuries. Still he was shaken up. Pat seemed to have woken up too. The young bird panicked and started flying around before it crashed down. The little one was still a terrible flyer, it probably wouldn’t have survived in the wild. Toby gazed at the package and shoved it off his lap, not even thinking about opening it. He couldn’t be bought, not if the prize he had to pay was bigger than what there was to gain. Not that he could really tell what was inside the package but still. He was sure this would hurt him eventually and Toby didn’t like being in pain. Especially not if it was his heart that ached. What the bloody hell was the meaning of this? He was so confused about this girl and her actions. Nothing made sense. Then she put up a childish act which made him roll his eyes. Something snapped and he jumped up. “WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT?” The werewolf shouted. “I don’t get you! I really don’t understand what you’re thinking! Why can’t you see that I’m doing this for you?!” Toby groaned and grasped his fingers in his thick black hair. He was so frustrated and confused.

Toby seemed to sag as he mumbled something about not being around long. “Don’t say that,” Hayden said strongly. She couldn’t deny she was worried about him. Being a werewolf had landed him in the Ministry’s crosshairs lately. But there had to be something they could do to help him. Maybe Claire could do something? She worked in that department. Merlin knew she was up in arms about the Ministry going behind their backs to pass the new legislation. Maybe she would know how to help.
Just when she thought she might be getting through to him, Toby suddenly went on the offense. Hayden shook her head angrily while making a mental note to apologize to Ari for the yelling incident after the Eye fell. Now that she was on the other side, she understood how it must have felt. “You can be a real ass, you know that? Do you honestly think I would be trying this hard if I didn’t actually want to be around you?” She shook the package still in her hand as proof. “Why can’t you ever just let anybody be nice to you?” For the same reason as Hayden, probably. Because it never lasted. Because why bother letting someone in when they were only going to leave again?
And then he started yelling. Hayden might not generally be an angry person, but she could most certainly hold her own when someone did manage to piss her off. Which Toby had just accomplished. “I want my friend back!” she yelled. There. She had said it. She had never really used that word before. Mostly because she assumed Toby just tolerated her company because no one else would put up with him. Surely if he had a chance he would rather be with other kids. Like that girl at the Hogsmeade match. But he was her friend, whether Hayden had ever called it that or not. Although at the moment she was too angry and hurt to even notice the word she had just used. Instead she just blazed right ahead. “I want to know that there’s one person in my life, just one person, that’s going to stay! Not because it’s their job or because some stupid piece of paper says I belong to them but because they actually want to be there! Because they actually want me! Why is that so much to ask?!” She took a breath as her eyes started burning. This was supposed to be about Toby, not her. But even with the adoption, it was still taking some time to get her head around the idea the O’Briens weren’t going to drop her when things got hard or that Ari wasn’t going to just stop checking in because she had better things to do. And now Toby was trying to shove her out, and Hayden literally didn’t know how to handle that.
She shook her head fiercely when he said he was doing this for her. “That’s bull, and you know it. You’re doing it for you. You’re pushing me out before you get hurt. But I’m not going anywhere. So get that through your stupid head.” She turned her gaze to the wall across from her, glaring daggers at the stone as she refused to move an inch from her place on the floor. “If you want me gone, you’ll have to be the one to leave.” An ultimatum admittedly might not have been her best move. But Hayden really didn’t know what else to do.

Tobias rose an eyebrow when Hayden told him what he couldn’t say. “Why not? Because you don’t like hearing the reality? It’s says so right here: if I haven’t been registered by November first I’ll get immediate expulsion from school! Oh and don’t forget a nice vacation to Azakan. I need to register in person at the Ministry but teachers aren’t letting me go!” Toby had grabbed the letter from his pocket and held it firmly. It was getting folded and pretty much looked like a mess. None of that mattered, he’d have torn it to pieces if he could. He hadn’t planned to share this information with Hayden. But as he didn’t understand her at all, he might at least try to make her understand him.
The Gryffindor bit the inside of his cheek when he was called an ass. Well he hadn’t tried to be nice so he could have expected something like this. He crossed his arms. “You didn’t try to meet or owl me this summer, instead you went off to have fun with your new happy family,” he snarled. She left and disappeared from his life for weeks. It wasn’t until Hogwarts until they saw each other again. It was true that contact came from both sides. Toby had written letters but never sent them as they didn’t feel right. That last question cast a shadow in Tobias’ eyes. He couldn’t bear to look at her.
“I thought you understood,” he whispered suddenly in very fragile tone. He bit his lip till he tasted blood. “It has always been the same story. People are nice because they pity you. They take you in and you warm up to them. You start to smile again and start to care for them. Then they cast you away or leave you behind. And you find out they never really cared about you, they just felt responsible. It’s the worst. The worst of all feelings,” he shook his head tears started to form in his eyes. Toby turned away and saw Pat struggling on the ground. The werewolf knelt to pick the little bird up and stroke its feathers. “It makes you feel disposable. Like you’re some animal they pick from the streets and throw you back on when they grow tired of you.” He couldn’t bring himself to say anything anymore. This should be enough to have her understand, at least he hoped so. She was an orphan like him after all. If anyone was going to understand it had to be her.
Toby was taken aback by the yell but even more by the word she dropped. The boy took a step back and found himself lost, puzzled. His hands fell limp next to his body. He’d never seen Hayden angry before and needed a moment to take it all in. His brain was in overdrive as he tried to find connections. “Then...” Blue eyes puzzled over the ground as if the answer was written there. His eyebrows turned to a frown but because he was thinking. His voice was surprisingly calm when he said the following: “Then we want the same thing, right?” To be wanted, to not be alone. “That’s such a shame, huh? We find this out when my time is almost up.” If he had to leave Hogwarts, where would he go? What would come of the contacts he’d made here?
He glared up when Hayden claimed he was doing this for himself. It was partly true and he felt caught. “I’m doing this so at least one of us can have a normal life,” he said firmly. “That’s all I’ve ever wanted. I’d be selfish if I stuck around with you because I don’t really fit in with normal.” Now he dared to look at Hayden again. When she left it up to him to walk away, he took a step, and another and another. Until he was past Hayden but then he stopped, facing her from his side. He put Pat on his shoulder, seeing the bird was more stable on his feet than he was good at flying, it’ll be fine. Toby gave her a sideway glance. “They’re good folks, ya know? The O’Briens I mean. I’m pretty sure they’re for real with you. Aren’t you grateful for having them?” The look on his face was neutral but a shade of jealousy slipped past his eyes.

Talk of registration made Hayden nervous. It wasn’t fair. Toby hadn’t done anything. They didn’t have any right to take him away, but what could she possibly do against it? “They can’t throw you out. McGonagall won’t let them.” That woman could be terrifying when she wanted to be. But she also gave Hayden an idea. “Have you talked to her? Maybe she would let you go. Or work something out with the Ministry so you don’t have to.” Personally, Hayden didn’t want Toby registered at all. It sounded like a terrible idea. But she knew better than to try and talk him out of something when she was angry.
The question of letters drew a scoff from Hayden. “You didn’t write me either! And then Ari said you got kicked out. Where the hell was I supposed to send a letter? It wasn’t like you had an address. I didn’t even know if you were going to come to school! For all I knew, you could’ve gotten yourself killed!” She wasn’t mad at him exactly. More mad at the situation. She was mad that Toby had this condition beyond his control and mad that the world kept making him pay for it.
Toby’s words tore at Hayden’s heart. She knew exactly what he was talking about. That feeling of abandonment. Of being broken. “I do understand. That’s why I thought we were different. I thought we weren’t going to do that to each other.” She couldn’t stop the hurt from seeping into her voice on that last sentence. If Toby understood what it was like, then why was he putting Hayden in this position? Why was he pushing her away just like everyone else?
She shook her head hard. “You’re not going anywhere. We’ll figure something out. We’ll fight it.” The wheels in her head were turning, rapidly searching for a solution. There had to be something she could do to help. “Claire, my new mom, she works in the Ministry. But she’s not like the rest of them. Her dad was a werewolf. She’s mad as hell about the registration. Says it’s not right. She keeps trying to find a way around it, some way they could reverse the new laws. Maybe she could help.” Not that Hayden was actually expecting Toby to trust anyone from the Ministry. And Claire would probably be shocked speechless at Hayden suggested she could be helpful. But if anyone in Hayden’s world could do anything about this, it would be her.
Toby was still trying to talk his way out of this. “Because hurting me to protect yourself isn’t selfish?” Hayden shook her head. “I don’t care if you’re not normal. All those normal kids out there never wanted to be my friends anyway.” And then Toby started to walk away. Hayden could feel her heart dropping down to her toes. She reached out to catch his hand, stopping herself just short when she remembered how much he hated being touched. But mercifully, he stopped on his own. His words and the jealousy they had caused Hayden to drop her gaze to the ground. “I know. And I am. It’s just really hard to believe it’ll finally stick this time. I keep waiting for them to change their minds.” She looked up, her eyes pleading as she changed the subject. “Don’t go. Please.” Bargaining hadn’t worked. Bribery, logic, appeals to emotion. None of it was convincing Toby not to walk out. All Hayden had left was the plea.

This subject made Toby highly uncomfortable. He hated talking about his condition and the things it took away from him. The lost everything to it. Many people would never guess it if they saw him but once Tobias was a happy energetic boy with a loving family. There wasn’t even a trace if that in him anymore. The happy memories only made him depressed. But at this point he was so unsure, he wanted to hear someone else about it. “They can, they’re the bloody law,” he groaned with a frustrated sigh. Toby rubbed his forehead and looked lost. Because that was what he wa. There was nothing he could do but wait until they’d come. Hayden mentioned talking to McGonagall which caused Toby to raise an eyebrow. If he were honest; he was terrified of that woman. After the incident during career day and the fight in the Gryffindor common room, he was sure she was going to expel him. “I haven’t. I don’t know how to approach her,” he mumbled. He gazed at the letter and bit his lip. “What shall I do? I don’t even know what it means to register. It doesn’t say what happens to me if I do. Only what happens if I don’t. At this point I have no idea what’s worse.” All he knew was that he wanted to stay in Hogwarts. Here was warmth and food.
The Gryffindor’s mouth opened to spill a defense on the matter that he didn’t sent letters. But then Hayden dropped the fact on him that he was kicked out. “You knew?” It came out in a hoarse voice. Toby panicked and stiffened, his face was showered in embarrassment. Did she know why he got kicked out as well? Either way he avoided her eyes at this point. He’d completely forgotten about the previous topic now that she told him this.
Toby only sunk further in embarrassment and self blame when Hayden told him she thought they were different. The hurt in her voice was sincere. Toby mentally cursed himself. This only proved that she was a way better person than he was. While she had believed in him to not abandon her, he… “I thought you were going to,” he admitted in a whisper. “Everyone had done so before, so why wouldn’t you?” His excuse didn’t make this any better.
He scoffed at her eagerness, chuckling in defeat. “Fight it? We’re two kids who haven’t even finished their OWLs. They’re the Ministry, among the most powerful witches and wizards of the current generation,” he shook his head. Because of everything he’d already given up on having hope. But it didn’t take away the frustration. Perhaps it only made things worse because Hayden DID sound hopeful. “No,” he said firmly when she suggested pulling in her new family. “You can’t ask those things from them. You should focus on mendling in before you decide to take crazy actions.” He wasn’t going to risk her adoption on this.
“I thought I was doing you a favor by disappearing from your life.” Hayden seemed to really think differently about him than he realized. He felt terrible for thinking bad things about good people. For a while he just stood there, past Hayden but not leaving. Toby shook his head when she told him she waited till the O'Briens would change their mind. “They won’t,” he said and turned a sideway glance at her. “You’re amazing and they see that. It’s embarrassing it took me so long to realize.” Toby took a step, but not one towards the exit but towards Hayden. He sat down next to her and took a very deep breath. He remained quiet, progressing everything. “This is Pat,” he suddenly started a conversation like all before hadn’t taken place. Toby took the young dove from his shoulder and held it between his hands, stroking its feathers gently. “Found the little one when I was on the streets. It was hurt and weak so I took em under my wing. It still can't fly well. I don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl. How does one even check?”

Hayden could feel her heart tearing as she looked down at Toby. He just seemed to small and alone sitting there. It wasn’t right how he was being treated. He was only dangerous one night a month (the main reason his presence had never bothered Hayden), and even that wasn’t an issue now that the school was getting him wolfsbane potion. The Ministry didn’t have any reason to be vilifying him like this. There had to be something Hayden could do. Like talking to the headmistress. “I could talk to her.” The idea of going up to McGonagall’s office really wasn’t that intimidating for Hayden, mostly because she was never in trouble. Besides, Toby needed help. Hayden would do whatever needed doing to help. And then Toby as asking what he should do. “I don’t know,” she admitted helplessly. “Claire, my new mom, she seems to think it’s a bad idea. That if the Ministry gets a list of names, they’ll just abuse it. But if you do it, they won’t take you away, right?” She really had no idea. Maybe it would be worth writing to Claire for some advice. Assuming she even wanted to give it considering how rocky things were between her and Hayden right now.
Toby seemed shocked that she knew he had been kicked out. “Yeah, I know! Why do you think I’ve been trying so hard to get you to talk to me? I wanted to see if you were okay.” She glanced down at the stones beneath her feet as she used the toe of her foot to trace the outline of one. The thought of Toby living on the street was worrying. “Ari came by sometimes after I got adopted. She said you got thrown out, but she didn’t know why.” Hayden looked back up, concern written across her face. “Did something happen?”
Her injured tone seemed to finally to get through to Toby at least a little. Although Hayden was still at a loss. How could she convince him she wasn’t going anywhere. “I won’t. I know it sounds stupid because that’s what everybody says and they always end up leaving anyway. But I mean it. You’re stuck with me.” Her firm tone turned slightly unsure as she added, “If you want to be, anyway.”
And now they were back to this. He had a point. What were two fifteen-year-olds against the whole Ministry? Hayden’s only real idea was quickly shot down. Toby didn’t want Claire involved. He might have a point though. Hayden didn’t want to ask so much of her new family that they changed their minds. But still. “So what am I supposed to do?” She lifted her hands and then dropped them helplessly. “I can’t just sit here and watch the Ministry do whatever they want with you. There’s got to be something.” Nothing was coming to mind, but Hayden wasn’t prepared to give up. Toby was her friend. One of the only ones she had. She couldn’t lose that.
For some ridiculous reason, Toby actually seemed to think things with the O’Briens would last. That seemed to be everyone except Hayden. She wanted it to last. She did. She just wasn’t quite sure yet that it would. It seemed too good to be true. Toby even slipped in a compliment. And about the closest thing to an apology Hayden had ever heard cross his lips. “Well, better late than never,” she said with a very tiny smile. Toby turned around, and then he was sitting down next to her. Hayden let out a breath she hadn’t even known she was holding. Maybe things actually were going to be okay. Toby took the bird off his shoulder (Hayden had been wondering what the deal was with the little guy) and introduced him as if the last few minutes had never even happened. “Hi, Pat.” Hayden reached over and very carefully stroked the feathers on his head. She had always gotten on well with animals. So did Toby, apparently. And how the Ministry could make a villain out of someone who rescued baby birds was completely beyond Hayden. She grinned at Toby’s question. “I have no idea. Um… Maybe ask Professor Hagrid? He probably knows.” That man adopted all sorts of strange creatures. Which personally, Hayden thought was fantastic.
Now that Toby seemed calm again, Hayden leaned over to grab the package he had left on the ground and held it out to him. “Now will you please open this? Or do I have to beg?” There was a hint of teasing in her voice. To say she was excited would be an understatement. Any kid who liked Quidditch would probably love to have a signed beater’s bat and picture of their favorite player. But for an orphan kid with a shortage of nice things? It was as good as gold.

Tobias swallowed when Hayden suggested she could talk to McGonagall. He really didn’t know if he wanted this to become a big thing. If the whole school was going to get involved this could turn out as a mess. Then again he was not the only werewolf in this building so maybe other had taken steps already. “If it helps you sleep at night,” he shrugged really wanted her to do it for herself. I don’t know, nobody seemed to know what the hell the Ministry was doing. He let out a frustrated sigh and scratched his neck. “I don’t know either. It doesn’t say what will happen IF I register, just what happens if I don’t. So right now I really have no clue which is the less worse option,” he shook his head and cursed the Ministry. They’d probably come up with something in a few months ‘innocent children shouldn’t be exposed to monsters’ or something like that. If his name was on the list it would be easier to point fingers at him. Then again the Orphanage and Hospital had records on his condition so it would be impossible to hide even if he didn’t register. This felt like a lost battle.
The young Gryff frowned when Hayden explained she came to know because Ari told her. “Damn that woman,” he whispered to himself. What was she thinking, Hayden should have used that time to focus on her new family. Toby watched his breath and counted till ten in his head. He didn’t want to lose it again. “You weren’t supposed to know,” he said with a deep sigh. Well he couldn’t make it undone now. He kept his lips firmly pressed on each other when asked if something happened. But on the look on her face he could see that she wouldn’t take silence for an answer. “I said something I shouldn’t have said and picked the worst time to do so.” It had been the day after the attack on Godric’s Hallow. Toby had been cranky as usual after the full moon (well not only after the full moon). He hadn’t watched his mouth when he should have. People already were already scared of werewolves.
He gazed up as Hayden claimed she wasn’t going to leave him. At first he rose an eyebrow, not believing her until she explained further. Toby remained silent, he just rose his hand and brought his pink towards Hayden. Nonverbally he gave her a look that asked her to promise him, to promise each other.
Hayden seemed very eager to do something. Only Toby didn’t know what, was there anything either of them could do? He shrugged. “Stay with me until it happens,” he mumbled as he gazed at the floor before her. “Keep contact even when I’m no longer here.” Maybe if he really had to leave he could look for something in Hogsmaede, the candy shop for example. Then they could meet in the weekends.
Sitting next to the Ravenclaw brought him at ease. He’d missed these simple moments of peace. Nothing was ever simple anymore these days. A smile crept on his face when Hayden greeted Pat. The little bird blinked and made itself comfortable in the boy’s hands. “Hagrid? Hmm could work,” he nodded approvingly.
Toby had completely forgotten about the package, he was happy enough to have Hayden back. She told him to open it, he had to admit he was a bit curious. “Uh? Ah… If you want me too,” he said cooly. “But don’t think stuff can buy me over, if you thought it would have worked,” he said teasingly. It was alright now even if it felt odd opening something. His last celebrated birthday was almost four years ago. When he opened the package and saw what was inside, his cheeks automatically turned red. “I can’t accept this,” he said quickly as he pushed the half opened package in her hands. He hadn’t even seen the autograph on the bat nor the picture yet.

Hayden’s gut instinct was to rail against the Ministry. Tell Toby to fight back against the injustice. But she took a breath and forced herself to look at the situation logically. “The orphanage already knows you’re a werewolf. It wouldn’t be hard for the Ministry to find out. If you don’t register, it’ll look like you’re trying to hide it.” She bit her lip briefly, and then her shoulders seemed to slump a bit in defeat. “It’s probably better if you do it. At least then they don’t have an immediate reason to come after you.” And if they did try to take him away, Hayden liked to think the headmistress would fight back against that.
“I’m your friend,” Hayden pointed out, using the word for the second time in this conversation. “Of course I should know.” She sighed. “I should have been there. Maybe I could have helped.” No wonder Toby was upset with her. He had needed someone, and Hayden hadn’t been there. Maybe he was right. Maybe she really had abandoned him.
For a second, she thought Toby might not believe her. Not that she could blame him. But then he held up his pinky. Hayden stuck out her own hand and linked her finger with his. “I’ll stay if you’ll stay,” she said, with only the slightest of tremors in her voice. They were in this together.
The defeated tone in Toby’s voice broken Hayden’s heart. “Of course I’ll stay. And I won’t let them take you. I don’t know how. But… I’ll think of something. I can talk to my new parents or Professor McGonagall or Ari… or something.” Toby didn’t seem to buy that, asking her to stay in contact even once he was gone. Hayden wanted to argue, to insist that they would figure this out. But maybe they wouldn’t. Maybe it was better for now to give him what he wanted. So instead she just nodded. “Of course. I promise.” She meant it. She was going to stay in touch this time, no matter what it took.
Toby finally took the package. About time. Hayden was starting to think she’d have to find another home for the bat. “Yeah, you made that pretty clear,” she said drily. But Toby quickly handed the half-opened package back to her when he saw the bat inside. What was wrong with it now? “Yes, you can. It didn’t cost me anything, if that’s what you’re worried about. I know someone who got it for me.” The fact that she had asked was completely irrelevant. Hayden leaned her head back against the stone wall behind her. “I was going to tell you this after you opened it, but since you’re being difficult… You know Alec Wayland? The Quidditch player? Well, he sort of saved my life when I was a kid. And my new uncle plays Quidditch for the Appleby Arrows, so he got Alec a letter from me. And then Alec wrote back. And now we’re sort of pen pals or something.” She paused briefly as she realized how weird that sounded. Her being pen pals with a Quidditch player. Huh. “Anyway, I told him I knew someone who liked Quidditch, so he sent me that for you.” She definitely hadn’t asked for an autograph for Toby. Nope. He would probably see that as pity, and it was already hard enough getting him to take the bag. Hayden pushed the package back into his hands. “So it’s yours whether you want it or not. I don’t even care that much about Quidditch anyway.” This would doubtless mean far more to Toby than it did to Hayden.

Tobias bit the inside of his cheek and pulled the sleeve of his pullover. His eyes glanced down in defeat. He’d already figured this out as it troubled his mind every minute of the day. “It’s not like I have much of a choice,” he mumbled and groaned. He felt as if it didn’t matter if he registered or not. Hell was to come sooner or later.
The Gryffindor fell into a silence on the topic of the orphanage. He felt as if he were to say something Hayden would find out why exactly he’d been kicked out. After losing his only ally in there, Toby has been more hostile than ever. That was where things started to go wrong.
There was the slightest hint of a smile when Hayden linked her pinky to his. He wasn’t sure what he was feeling or what he was supposed to feel. Both happy and scared? He’d taken someone in trust now. Something he had sworn himself not to do anymore. But on the other hand he knew he couldn’t handle all this on his own and he didn’t want to lose Hayden. Not again.
“Thank you,” he whispered with a small sniff in his voice. But then when she suggested pulling adults into this he fiercely shook his head. “I can’t trust them. I can only trust you. They’re just doing their job, they don’t really care.” It was the same with Coney, he had learned the hard way. When he had been first found he was happy with the thought that someone cared enough for him to offer him a second chance. But it turned out that King was just doing his job as head of Gryffindor. At least that was what it felt like.
It was a bat. It was a freaking beater bat! How the hell did Hayden get something like this? He shook his head when she told him he could have it and that it hadn’t cost her anything. Toby fiercely shook his head. “That’s a bat,” he pointed out the obvious but to him nothing made sense anymore. Things weren’t going to make sense anytime soon either as Hayden’s story caused a small malfunction within Tobias’ brain. Alec Wayland? THE Alec Wayland, saved his only friend? How could this man be any more perfect in the boy’s head right now? Wayland was everything Toby wished he could be; charming, funny, likable, heroic and good with Quidditch. And of course he had made a fool out of himself in front of the man during career day. “Oof.” The package was pressed back into his hands. “I do want to have it!” The words slipped him before he knew it. His cheeks turned a little red when he caught himself. “It just doesn’t feel right… I’ve never played Quidditch and I haven't really looked into professional Quidditch until recently...”

Toby seemed pretty adamant about not involving adults. Not that Hayden could blame him. She’d been of a similar opinion until pretty recently. “You can trust a few of them. What about Ari? She’s a good person.” Hayden was absolutely convinced of that now despite having made a solid effort to keep the counselor out of her life at first. She was pretty sure the adults of her new family could be trusted as well. And there was the librarian, Hayden’s head of house. She had been good to Hayden over the years. She was definitely trustworthy. But that was where the list ended. And if Hayden was being perfectly honest, there probably wasn’t much the people on that list could do. Claire stood the best chance since she worked in the beast division, but the new regulations had gone right around her department. Maybe Toby was right. Maybe they really were alone with this.
She was winning him over. She could tell by the look of awe on his face. “So? You don’t have to play Quidditch to have a bat. It can be a souvenir or whatever. People do it all the time.” She nudged him playfully with her shoulder. “And if you do want to play, you’ll need something to practice with.” Toby was definitely a beater. Not that Hayden knew much about the game beyond the basic positions. (A fact that would no doubt appall Uncle Trace.) But she knew that much. Besides, maybe she could ask Alec to help Toby out or something. The chances of him making his house team were pretty slim given at least two of the players couldn't stand him, so he would need all the help he could get.
