Alec had a busy week. There were meetings, the occasional interview and practice galore. The Chudley Cannons very nearly beat them during their last match and granted half of both teams had been out sick but the near victory shook him to his core. They very well could have won had the match not been interrupted by.... something that he would rather not think about. His practices had become intense and for such a normally nice guy he could be very harsh when his competitive streak kicked in, but as Captain it was his job.
He managed to snag a few hours to himself today between morning practice and an evening fan event, heading out to Hogsmeade. He liked the village, it was quiet and quaint, the perfect place to kill a few hours. Alec wandered through the streets, ducking in and out of stores when he came across the candy shop. The Beater had a wicked sweet tooth himself and thought that he might try his hand at buying his team's forgiveness for pushing them so hard with sugar quills and peppermint toads. Who could resist a little sugar, even when it came paired with a grueling Quidditch practice designed to push the players to their limits?
Armed with a basket, he prowled through the aisles, perusing the shelves. They were packed full of sweets in every shape and color of the rainbow. He always did enjoy the sweetshop when he was in school and didn't frequent it near enough now that he was an adult. Alec paused at a display of candy floss and it whisked him right back to his childhood. Light and sugar. His attention turned to a collection of cockroach clusters, drawing his eyebrow curiously up as he reached for the box. "I always wondered if these were real cockroaches." He wasn't speaking to anyone in particular so he was surprised when he heard a voice chime in behind him.

Having money in her pocket was a new feeling for Hayden. Granted, it wasn’t much. A handful of change that would only cover a few small treats. Spending money from her new parents. But after four years of secondhand items, having any amount of money to spend on herself felt like a fortune. Hayden had yet to spend so much as a Knut of what Connor had given her at the beginning of the school year. She wanted to be absolutely sure of whatever she bought. This commodity was not to be wasted.
Weekends were open for Hogsmeade for the older students, so Hayden had wandered down to take in the sights. She liked the quaint little village and didn’t mind exploring it by herself. The weather was starting to get cooler as they headed towards the end of the year, so Hayden had on a light jacket and a blue beanie trimmed in copper (courtesy of Uncle Isaac). After browsing through Scrivenshaft’s and the bookstore, she headed over to Honeyduke’s. No kid could resist the allure of candy forever. Especially a kid not used to having access to it. Hayden was far more serious than her chattering classmates as she carefully surveyed each and every treat. She couldn’t just go splurging on everything, strong though the temptation might be. Besides, candy wouldn’t last as long as a new book or set of pencils. If she was going to spend the money on sugar, it had to be something absolutely perfect. Something worth depleting her small stash.
She was weighing out the pros and cons of chocolate frogs (Micah collected the cards. Maybe he would like it if she mailed him one?) when a voice sounded behind her. The comment caused her to make a face. “Ew.” Only after the disgusted sound left her mouth did she realize the person hadn’t actually been talking to her. She glanced over to see if maybe they hadn’t heard and found herself staring at a face she recognized. And not just because it was in the papers and Quidditch magazines so many of the other students loved to pore over. Seeing as Hayden didn’t really follow the sport, she wasn’t normally one to get excited about seeing a star. But this one meant something to her. A grin spread across her face as the man turned her way. It was actually him. Would he recognize her? She was older now. Taller too. But after the kindness he had shown in his letters and the gifts for Toby, Hayden didn’t bother waiting to find out. “Alec! You’re actually here.” She promptly stuck out her hand, still grinning. “Hayden Pierce. O’Brien.” She made a bit of a face at the rapidly added afterthought, almost as if it was confusing. “I keep forgetting that’s my name now.”

While Alec certainly wasn't expecting a commentary as he poured over the candy's label, trying to decipher if they were real cockroaches or not, he got one in the form of a very decisive 'ew' from a young girl. He looked up from the package and turned, with an easy smile settling in across his handsome (if not slightly stubbly) face. The source of the disgust was a young girl who seemed please, if not a little shocked to see him standing there. Alec's smile took on a bashful quality as recognition dawned in the young girl's expression. It was an interaction he'd had a hundred times and would have a hundred times more before the month was out.
Alec enjoyed his fans very much, even if he occasionally found his fame uncomfortable. Usually everything was well and good until the magazines pried too much into his private life, not his supporter's fault though and he was disinclined to take his frustrations out on them. He nodded at her exclamation that he was there "I find it hard to stay away, I've got a bit of a sweet tooth." the Beater commented, setting the box of questionable candy on the shelf so he could take her hand, shaking it. The name tickled a familiar part of Alec's brain and he quickly sifted through his mental list of important names to remember. "Oh, you're the one who's written me." He inclined his head in greeting while burying his hands in his pockets. "It's nice to meet you and put a face to the letter."
The Puddlemere Captain leaned forward and dropped his voice low as if sharing some deep secret. "After the way the Arrows played yesterday I probably would have 'forgotten' that name too." he added a wink with his teasing. It was all in good fun, of course. Alec respected all of the teams, even the cannons although the two teams played up their rivalry. Enough about Quidditch, sweets were the objective of the day. One thing that he did find a bit odd was that the girl was there alone, Hogsmeade was more fun with friends. Perhaps now that the students could visit every weekend it had lost it's appeal and excitement. "I'm here to try and buy my team's forgiveness, myself. They've been pushed particularly hard lately." He picked up another box from the shelf, wrinkling his nose as he read the label "Hopefully jelly slugs do the trick."
Alec placed the package in the basket hanging from his arm before looking back to the girl, Hayden. "What about you?"

In spite of their recent letters, Hayden was still a little impressed that Alec actually remembered her name. He probably got a lot of fanmail given how popular he apparently was. Not that Hayden really followed Quidditch enough to know. The sport had just never caught her interest. She could, however, appreciate the skill it took, of which Alec seemed to have a considerable amount. “Yeah, you too,” she said with a nod. His face had been buried somewhere in the depths of her memory, but it had gotten fuzzy with the years. Now it was suddenly clear again.
She laughed when he brought up the Arrows. Uncle Trace was mighty proud of his team, and his girlfriend Emily was possibly even more so. Either one of them would’ve pretended to take grave offense at the comment. But Hayden didn’t take it personally. “That bad, huh? Maybe I should Trace and Emily some chocolate as a consolation prize,” she joked. Although Emily had very high standards when it came to chocolate, having grown up in France with rich parents. Sometimes Hayden wondered what the redhead saw in her teammate. Not that Trace wasn’t a great guy. They just seemed to come from completely different circles. And yet somehow it worked.
Hayden made a face at the mention of jelly slugs. “That doesn’t sound appealing at all.” Not that she had ever actually had one. “Are they any good?” Most of the candy filling the store was completely foreign to her. Sugar such as this was a rare treat for the kids at the orphanage, usually coming from outsiders or the rare kind-hearted worker like Ari. Alec asked after her own purpose, and Hayden shrugged. “I’m just looking, mostly. Haven’t really decided if anything’s worth the money.” That was the real rub. She had a limited amount of allowance here, and it would probably be better spent on something more practical like new drawing pencils. But the allure of sugar was strong. Hayden looked around the store with the expression of someone who didn’t really know what they were looking for but fully expected to recognize it when they finally saw whatever it was. “I don’t really know where to start. My brother likes chocolate frogs, and my little sister likes sugar quills, but I haven’t really decided yet. I’ve never tried most of this.” Only a Ravenclaw could turn picking candy into such a practical and logical decision. She turned curious eyes up to Alec. “What do you like?”

The girl seemed rather pleased with his joke, laughing even. At her question he grimaced, as if the match truly pained him as he nodded. "It was dreadful. I thought for a moment they might've replaced their players with trolls or something." Honestly, the match he was referring to wasn't that bad, and Alec made a point to watch other teams play each other but he couldn't let the chance for good natured ribbing slip through his fingers, even if it was with the man's new niece. "Chocolate is a very good consolation prize." Alec agreed with another nod. Chocolate could fix all the world's problems, he was sure.
"Ah, true." When the girl was right, she was right. "But unlike cockroach clusters I can personally attest to the fact that Jelly slugs are not made with actual slugs. They're my third favorite." The Wizarding World of Sweets seemed to be fond of naming things after the most unappetizing creature they could think up. Jelly slugs, cockroach clusters, ice mice, peppermint toads... No peppermint bunnies or sugar kittens. Maybe the namer of sweets was a sadist who delighted in tempting children while repelling them with repulsive names and imagery to see if their disgust or their sugar craving would win out.
Alec, who had a wicked sweet tooth found it odd that someone would question whether the things in the shop were worth the money. "Everything's worth the money." It was candy! Was anything worth the cost as much as candy? He tilted his head, a child who didn't seem to like candy, now he'd seen everything. Speaking of everything? "All of it." he said with a grin. "You're putting too much thought into it, Miss Ravenclaw. Sweets should never be thought about so deeply." She was going to try everything, he decided. "You're going to need a basket." Alec dropped the jelly slugs into his own basket and handed it off Hayden before hurrying off to grab a new one, calling a "Wait here." over his shoulder.
When he returned to her he had another basket of his own hooked on his arm. He examined the shelf with a critical eye before deciding where to start. "Chocolate frogs are a classic. You'll need one of them." The Beater plucked a few right off the shelf and dropped them into the fifth year's basket. "Or five." He did the same with his own before moving on to the sugar quills. "You'll appreciate these, I think." Alec mused, filling the girl's basket with a handful. "You can look thoughtful while you're eating it. Just don't confuse them with your normal quills."

Hayden had already decided she liked Alec just from his letters, but listening to him joke with her like they were old friends only confirmed that. “Don’t let Trace hear you say that. He might have a thing or two to say about the Hogsmeade game.” Alec’s team had gotten close to losing to their opponents. And while that really didn’t meant much to Hayden, Trace and Emily had acted like it was an incredible upset.
While the jelly slugs sounded rather disgusting, Alec seemed to think they tasted pretty good. Hayden shrugged skeptically. “If you say so.” Come to think of it, a lot of the candy in the shop had weird names or shapes. Hayden didn’t have enough experience with any of it herself. Although she had been warned by a few housemates that it was safer to stay away from the Every Flavor Beans. Just in case. But aside from that and the occasional sweet from Ari or prospective adoptive parents, that was about the extent of Hayden’s candy knowledge. She tilted her head curiously. “If that’s your third favorite, what are your first two?”
Apparently it was all the worth the money. Still, Hayden eyed the bright sugary displays with caution. Sweets were indeed something to be thought about. “They should when they’re expensive,” she said as she looked over at a shelf with just a little too much longing. The sugar surrounding her did look good. Ridiculously so. But. “That’s a lot of money for something that won’t last very long.” Her hand slid subconsciously into her pocket as she fingered the coins there. She had a limited amount of funds. To be fair, it was more than she’d had in years. But there might be other things she wanted later. Like new pencils. As someone who spent most of the last four years with little more than a small trunk to her name, the idea of spending so much of her money on candy, especially all in one go, just didn’t sit quite right. And there was absolutely no way she was asking Connor and Claire for more allowance when this ran out. She was still new to the family. It wouldn’t do for them to think she needed too much. So for now, what she had was it.
And then Alec was handing Hayden his basket. “Why?” she asked, thoroughly confused. Her question was answered when Alec returned with a second basket. Seriously? Hayden couldn’t help grinning at his enthusiasm. Were all famous people this fun? He proceeded to give her a handful of chocolate frogs and then another of sugar quills, and Hayden could feel her initial resistance fading. “Thoughtful is good.” His advice about quills made her laugh. “That sounds like it could end badly.” Alec’s enthusiasm was catching. Something about him just seemed to relax the air of self-sufficient responsibility Hayden was so used to maintaining. Her eyes were starting to sparkle a bit as they roamed the shelves. She pointed over at a display of peppermint toads. She didn’t have much experience with peppermint, but Micah was obsessed with the flavor. “What about those? Are those any good?”

Alec grinned and laughed, shaking his head. "The Hogsmeade game was an anomaly. We could hardly be judged by it, half of both our teams were gone." The Cannons nearly got them. Nearly. He enjoyed the match all the same and was still trying to twist Potter's arm into playing for them more regularly. Their Seeker was talking about retiring after the current season and who better to replace him than the best seeker of his age? The Boy Who Lived And Played Quidditch Brilliantly. He wasn't sure what the man's hold out was, most would jump at the chance to play Quidditch professionally... Especially for Puddlemere. Alec had his pick of the litter when it came to players.
Nothing brightened his grin like talking about sweets. It brought him right back to his youth, made him feel like a kid again standing inbetween the shops shelves, faced with an endless assortment of sugar. "I'm rather fond of chocolate. Cauldron Cakes will always be my number one." Mm, cauldron cakes. His stomach rumbled at the thought. What wasn't to love about them? Chocolate cakes with a tasty cream filling, shaped like a traditional cauldron. They were cute and delicious. "I think I'd like chocolate frogs better if they didn't jump, but that knocks them down to the number two spot in my opinion." And he took his opinion on candy very, very seriously. He didn't want to work for his sugar rush, when one was craving something chocolatey catching the frogs could be a pain.
As a professional Quidditch player, Alec was fairly well off and he often barely registered the cost of the things he bought. He never wanted for anything and lived very comfortably in his less than modest beach front home. Candy, expensive? No child should have to fret over the costs of things like candy. "Sweets can turn someone's day right around if used effectively. Their power to do that is priceless, really." On top of being well off, Alec was a very generous soul and understood the power of a little bit of gifted sweetness to brighten the darkness that so often crept into people's lives.
"Oh, it can." he assured her, nodding as he reached for the shelves again, hand hovering uncertainly between ice mice and fizzing whizzbees. "Feathers taste surprisingly unpleasant." Alec pulled both candies off the shelf and tossed them into Hayden's basket before turning his attention to the candy in question. "Oh, of course. They're just like chocolate frogs except they're peppermint and...well..toads, not frogs." The Quidditch player grabbed a handful as he spoke and into the basket he went. "Personally I don't know the difference between a frog and a toad. They'll still get a good jump in if you're not careful."
Alec made sure to fill the young Ravenclaw's basket and his own with all sorts of sweets. Honeyduke's fudge, acid pops, licorice wands, and exploding bon bons. "You've got an assignment." he said, taking the basket so he had one in each hand, motioning up towards the counter. "You're to try these and write me to let me know which is your favorite. I've got a feeling it'll be the sugar quills. But you've got to pace yourself a bit or else you'll end up in the Hospital Wing with a stomach ache and if that happens, I had absolutely nothing to do with this."

Alec definitely seemed to love his sugar. Not that Hayden minded. It was actually rather nice to be around an adult that acted more like a kid. Made them more relatable. “Cauldron Cakes, huh? I’ll have to try them.” There was a lot in here she would have to try if she ever had the funds. Hayden was still a little skeptical of the prices, but she could feel her resolve wearing down as Alec kept talking. He had a point about chocolate frogs. “Yeah, it’s a pain if they get away. Why do people even want to eat food that moves anyway? That just sounds weird.” Chocolate frogs weren’t so bad. One good jump and they were back to being normal chocolate. But some of the other candies could move around in a person’s stomach, or so Hayden had heard.
Candy certainly did make for a good way to cheer people up. “People always brought candy to the orphanage when they visited. I guess kids are more fun to look at when they’re happy.” She shrugged nonchalantly. Hayden wasn’t a cynic exactly, but she had been around the orphanage long enough to know how it worked. Prospective parents didn’t want to be around kids who were dirty or sad. So they brought presents. As if that would somehow make up for it when they inevitably picked someone else. But Hayden had a family now, so those days were over. Besides, if candy was so great at cheering people up, maybe she should try buying some for Toby. He could use a little extra joy with the registration deadline coming up.
Feathers tasting unpleasant? There was a story there or Hayden’s last name wasn’t O’Brien. “You speaking from experience?” she asked in a teasing tone. Alec kept piling in one candy after another. It was all Hayden could do to keep up with what was even going in her basket. This was definitely going to cost a small fortune. But the orphan in her was winning out now, awed at the thought of so much tasty goodness residing in her possession. She was so caught up in the moment she barely even notice when she answered his question like the nerd she was. “Toads usually have drier skin and they live on land. Frogs like water. And they hop more than toads.” How she knew that, she had no idea. Hayden could be a wealth of facts that she had picked up in all sorts of odd places. The trick was getting her to actually offer up those facts.
Haden gave him a skeptical look at the mention of an assignment, but she grinned when she heard what it was. “Okay,” she said with a chuckle. “I’ll try not to eat them all at once.” Actually, she could pretty much guarantee she would hoard the sweets and ration them out like some kind of miser. But might as well play along. Maybe she could get Toby to help her eat some of them. Mikko didn’t need the sugar. He already had too much energy.
