October 31th 2003 - Ministry of Magic
Aje Odili is guiding Tobias to the registration. Ever since the conversation in Profesor Odili’s office, Tobias hadn’t been able to get some rest. All he could think about was today. He didn’t want to do it but he didn’t see any other options. There was too much information about him already from different places that it was hard to hide. Tobias felt as if he was walking towards his execution. He had never been here before but almost everything he had heard about the Ministry was bad. This place was huge and intimidating. Toby kept his eyes on the ground the whole time, he didn’t dare to look anyone in the eye. It felt as if the look on his face alone betrayed why he was here. The young Gryffindor stayed close to his teacher. He was scared, terrified enough to break his usual dislike of physical contact. His hand clung tightly around the tall man’s wrist. Toby felt as if the evil people would get him if he let go. If it hadn’t been for Professor Aje, he would have never dared to do this. Even now his courage was failing him. With every step they took he felt the bitter taste in his mouth worsen. When laying eyes upon the sigh ‘Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures’ he started to tremble. His grip around Aje’s wrist tightened but even then his body was still shaking. “Prof… c-can we g-go back?” The words came out as nothing but a squeaky whisper. He took a step closer to the man and bit down his bottom lip. “I’m scared, I don’t wanna do this,” he started sobbing. Tobias hated to cry in front of people but fear got the better of him.

The Boy might be tall, but Aje was taller and he was angry. He used his height to look intimidating, imposing as he stalked through the corridor with a student clutching at his wrist. It was the day before the registration deadline, it wouldn't be too hard to guess what a scared boy was doing in the halls of the Ministry. Aje glared at anyone who's gaze looked too critical or lingered too long, occasionally demanding a 'What?' when his own hard gaze wasn't enough to deter onlookers. Most moved on when they caught one look at his face, Aje could be frightening when he wanted to be and the stragglers would move on or avert their eyes when actually challenged.
He wasn't mad at his Gryffindor companion of course, and he made sure to make that clear several times, telling Toby that he was not doing anything wrong, that everything was fine. He was mad at the fact a teenager, a child was being forced into a political battle, used as a pawn by the Ministry as a scapegoat. Werewolves were hardly the most pressing issue facing the Ministry. People were dying or going missing every other day, not just on the full moon. They did occasionally pass by people who were familiar to Aje and he would soften his face and nod a greeting, occasionally even murmur a 'Hello' in passing. They were old coworkers who he respected, some current Order members too. As soon as he was clear of them, though, he would resume his hard face and looming posture. He made a promise that no one would bother Toby and he was going to make good on that promise.
The boy finally spoke and Aje felt his heart crumble a little in his chest, the broken pieces floating in a sea of sympathy. It was an uncomfortable and heavy feeling. The former auror stopped, turning to face the Gryffindor with a look of understanding and concern across previously angry features. "I am sorry, but we cannot go back." His voice was edged in genuine regret that the child was subjected to such a thing. "You must do this." When Toby started to cry, Aje looked around the corridor and tugged the Gryffindor into what he hoped to be an empty conference room or office, although he did not check to make sure it was unoccupied. "You may be scared, and that is okay but this is what you must do. When it is done you will go back to school and do your homework or go have dinner in the Great Hall. No one will bother you, I will bite their ankles if they try." Badgers might look cute and cuddly but he had some wicked claws and sharp teeth in animagus form.
"We will dry your tears." he withdrew his wand from the inside pocket of his jacket. "And then you will put your name on the list, you will show them your wand, and then you will move on. This will not be a defining moment in your life. You are bigger than this." After he gave his wand a reproachful, warning look the wizard flicked it and summoned a box of tissues from a desk in the far corner of the room. "We will go when you are calmer." Aje pressed the box into Toby's hands before re-pocketing his wand, a hint of triumph in his eyes. His wand must've taken pity on him and complied with his request and that made him feel good. "You will not let them see that they have upset you, you will not give them that satisfaction."

His lip started to tremble when his teacher told him he had to get this through. He bit it down to gain something of control. This wasn’t like Toby. He never cried, when he was usually upset he resulted in violence. But he was more than upset, he felt devastated and lost. The thought of begging even passed his mind and he wasn’t someone who begged. Shit. He didn’t want Professor Aje or anyone to see him like this. Toby gasped when Aje pulled him into a room, the tears did not stop. He felt pathetic and embarrassed on top of the fear he felt before. This was a terrible day.
Toby glared down and frowned, mentally cursing himself for crying like a little kid. “I just wanna go back to bed...” Toby was so tired of this all. Ever since he was bitten he never had a day where he just could be a normal kid. There was always something or someone reminding him that he was some kind of freak. If he registered the whole world would know and things would never be peaceful. The boy sniffed and rubbed his eyes fiercely in the hope of stopping them from shedding more tears. A lot of Aje’s words just passed him by. The kind man was only trying to help him. Unfortunately for the man, Toby only caught a few glimpses and of course it was something that only triggered anger in the young Gryffindor. Bigger than this? “I can’t even control my own emotions!” How could everyone always be so calm and collected but he couldn’t? It was not fair.
He stared at the box that was pushed in his hands he grinded his teeth together and then threw the box against the wall on the other side of the room. He would lie if he’d claim it didn’t give him a little satisfaction when the box fell into a trash can. But this was not the time to discover throwing skills. The Gryffindor took a very deep breath and exhaled slowly. “I’m sorry, Prof… I’m wasting your time..” Toby sniffed some more and dried his tears with his sleeve. He felt guilty for asking the Hufflepuff head of house for a favor only to have this happen.

The Ministry was getting more irritating by the day. Crystal was an auror, not a bloody errand girl. Her supervisors could deliver their own damn reports. She couldn’t decide if her sudden lack of legitimate assignments was due to her bosses knowing exactly who had stuffed the office with live Weasley products the other night or if this was the Ministry’s way of striking back at her for being so vocal about werewolf rights and the inhumanity of how they were being treated. Either way, she had spent the last two days filling out reports and seeing them to the correct offices. And it was driving her mental. If the trolls in Hogsmeade this weekend had been lured in with portkeys, she should be out there looking for who had done the luring. Not running reports to the bloody portkey office. The paper-pushing bureaucrats down there clearly weren’t going to be any help. But Crystal was already on thin ice as it was, so she had done the obligatory grumbling and taken the damn files anyway.
She was coming out of the Department of Magical Transportation, still in a rather huffy state, when she caught sight of what appeared to be Aje heading into an office with a teenager in tow. Weird. Why would a teenager be here? McGonagall ran a right ship. She would never let a student out of the school without a legitimate reason. A paper airplane memo headed for the creature task force zoomed past Crystal’s head, nearly clipping her ear, and her surge of irritation faded as a thought struck her. Remus had mentioned there being at least one werewolf student. An orphan, if she remembered correctly. The poor kid would have to come here in person to register. Maybe that was it. Although the very thought made Crystal’s fists clench. It wasn’t bloody right.
To hell with being an errand girl. There was still one more file in her hand, but it was worthless and she knew it. She caught the arm of some lackey and shoved the papers into his arms with instructions on where to take them. Before he could protest, Crystal was already off down the hallway. She opened the door to the office, empty save for Aje and a red-eyed boy, and slipped in with a smile. “I thought I recognized you,” she said warmly to Aje as she closed the door behind her. “We don’t see you around here much anymore.” She kept her eyes on him for a brief second to give the poor kid time to pull himself together before turning his direction and holding out her hand. “Crystal Meadowes. I’m a friend of… Professor Odili.” The words still felt strange coming out of her mouth. Aje might be a quiet bloke, but Crystal liked him. It still felt a little odd not seeing his large form around the office anymore.
She smiled warmly over at the poor upset boy as she crossed her arms comfortably over her chest, feet sliding slightly apart into a relaxed stance. “So. What brings you two fine gentlemen here today?” She was pretty sure she already knew, and she was willing to do anything she could to help. But she could also play dumb if it made the kid feel better.

"That is fine." he agreed when the boy said he wanted to go back to bed. "After we are done, you can go back to bed. If your homework is finished. Homework is very important. It must come first." He was trying to find the balance between sympathy and authority. It was easy for him to fall into a friendship role and abandon his position of professor. Even in the face of adversity, people must not forget their studies. The world marched on even when you didn't want it too and it would do well for him to fall behind because he was upset.
The child was certainly very emotional. Aje was used to tantrums from small ones, but not the larger children. His siblings all knew better by the boy's age but then again, they were never forced into a situation such as this. "Calm yourself." he said firmly. It didn't bother him so much that the child was expressing his anger towards him, but he knew that it would not be wise to mouth off to Ministry officials. If he couldn't hold his tongue with him, a man who was only trying to help, then he would not be able to speak to the official (who was likely only doing their job) without anger. When the child threw his offered box of tissues, Aje frowned at the rubbish bin. "The only thing you are wasting is tissues. There is nothing to dry your eyes with now." Throwing things was unacceptable, Aje never threw things even when his anger got intense but getting angry would not help the situation.
He placed his large hands on the boys shoulders. "You must control your emotions or you will only make it harder for yourself. We will breathe together." If the boy had an objection he did not listen to it, only closed his eyes and coached the child through his breathing exercise. "Breathe in slowly through your nose. Breathe deeply, so the bottom of your lungs fill up. Hold, two, three and breathe out through your mouth, very slow." He slowly inhaled through his nose, taking care to expand his lungs and fill them up. He held his breathe for a three count and then exhaled just as he had instructed before. If the child did not cooperate then at least Aje tried his best and was feeling calmer himself. He could try to help, but he couldn't make the horse drink the river.
The door opened and Aje wheeled around to face it, his expression hard and hands held up and ready to hex away whoever dared to approach them. He relaxed visibly at the sight of Crystal closing the door. "You would see me here even less, ore mi, if it were my choice. They have destroyed the Ministry I knew." He left his job as an auror at the perfect time. He wouldn't be able to cope with the conflict against his moral compass. He looked back to his young charge. "This is Miss Meadows, she is an auror and my friend." He would do well not to sass the woman, Crystal would only sass him right back. "We are here for the registration but we got distracted."

Toby was a bit relieved knowing he was allowed to turn to bed when they returned. He really didn’t want to go to the Halloween party. The Gryffindor would probably be exhausted enough after this. Mostly because he was wearing himself out by being stressed and tense. Then again it wasn’t like it could be helped. He heard many things about the Ministry and none of it was good. In his eyes they were big mean adults who abused their power. However when his teacher told him he had to do his homework first, Toby looked up with a frown. He hadn’t want to pout but it happened without realizing it. “Homework can come tomorrow,” he mumbled in protest. While Toby was pretty decent with school he struggled with the deadlines and the work given in free hours. He much rather spend some extra time in class so he could finish the work before he forgot he had to do it.
The young wolf was having one of his emotional outbreaks. He’d never had these when he was little, only since he was bitten and later abandoned by his parents. And even if he knew these tantrums only caused more problems, he couldn’t control himself. It was embarrassing, fifteen year olds should be more mature than he was.
He felt the man’s strong hands on his shoulders, keeping him in one place. Tobias was still very emotional and confused. “What are you doing?” The man started a breathing exercise. “Stop, this looks stupid.” But eventually he joined in, he got the idea that struggling against the teacher wouldn’t really work. Even if he wouldn’t downright admit it, he felt a little calmer already.
That was when the door opened and he jumped up in panic. With Aje’s hands in the air and Toby free to move again, he hid behind the tall adult and peered from there. He held the Professor’s robes as he tried to see who this person was. It was a Ministry worker. The enemy. She was talking to Aje as if she knew him, which later seemed to be the case. Toby bit his lip and gazed up to the man with insurance. The woman introduced herself but Toby didn’t really reply, she got nothing more than a nod which was barely visible as he was shielding himself behind the Hufflepuff Head.
You will not let them see that they have upset you. Aje’s words echoed through his mind. Toby knew he had to stand his ground but it was easier said than done. Just when he was trying to gather his courage, Aje bluntly told the woman why they were here. Toby gasped and hit the teacher’s arm from behind. He didn’t just have to go and tell everyone! Then again… Soon it wouldn’t really be a secret anymore. He sighed and shook his head, realizing the woman probably had guessed it already when she had seen him. Students never came to The Ministry while there were classes going on if normal teenager ever got in here. “It was obvious, wasn’t it?” Toby glanced up to the woman. “You don’t have to pretend. That the Ministry tells you to lie is one thing, but you don’t have to lie to us.” Toby hated adults who were only faking kindness. They were the reason he no longer trusted others easily anymore.

The tall Professor shook his head to the pout and objection. This was something he would not be gentle and understanding with. just firm. "Homework can come tomorrow but it will come today. Tomorrow's homework will come tomorrow. Professor is my job, student is your job. Students do homework." Normalcy and routine were important, especially to someone who didn't seem like he had a whole lot of structure going for him. If the boy was going to look for his help then he would give all he could, even if it was for things that were not asked of him. It came from caring for his siblings while his mother worked, Aje could be intimidating but he was a soft old mother hen on the inside.
The student did not take to his breathing exercises well but the former auror was unphased. "It is not what I am doing." he said, slowly inhaling a deep breath until his lungers were fully expanded and then letting it out. "It is what we are doing. We are breathing. Nothing else is very important as long as you keep breathing, everything else is fixable, temporary. Breathing is the only thing that you do as long as you live. Now, begin." He coached the boy through several sets of breaths until he felt calmer, or at least seemed like he felt calmer, interjecting a "It is not stupid, it is essential to life." when the boy called it stupid.
When Crystal joined the room, Aje was appalled at Toby's behavior. When Mister Turner hit his arm, Aje turned to face him. "Do not not hit me." his voice was calm but with authority. "I have brought you here to help you. Hitting is unacceptable." The child's behavior further deteriorated when he spoke to his friend with disrespect. Now, anger seeped into his voice and demeanor. He crossed his arms over his chest as he told his young charge. "You will not speak to her like that. Miss Meadows is very kind and very honest. You owe her an apology."

Aje wasn’t the only one put out with the Ministry. Crystal nodded. “Yeah, they’ve done a real number on the place,” she said bitterly. There was even talk among some of the more moral aurors about leaving. Neville had jumped ship to be a healer. Not that Crystal could blame him after his father. And Ezra seemed pretty conflicted too, which was a strange look for the normally friendly man. But as messy as things were getting, Crystal couldn’t see herself leaving. Not yet. There had to be a way to stop this ship from sinking. Tonks had wanted them to at least try.
The kid didn’t take her offered hand. Not that Crystal had really expected him too. Aje confirmed they were here for the registration, so it made sense for the boy not to trust anyone with the Ministry. The words that finally did come out of the kid’s mouth made her raise an eyebrow. So did the sight of him actually hitting Aje. Merlin, that was stupid. Aje might be a big softie at heart, but Crystal had seen the man in action. He was not someone to mess with. Although she had to try very hard not to smile as he chastised the kid. Apparently being a professor suited him quite well.
“It’s alright,” she said easily. “I wouldn’t trust me either if I was in his shoes. The Ministry’s treating him badly, and he’s got a right to be upset about that.” She shifted her gaze from Aje to the boy. He wanted honesty? Then honesty he would get. “I’ve got a good friend who’s like you. You probably know him. Professor Lupin? He’s a really good person. He deserves better than he’s gotten. You all do. But you should know we’re not all like that. Some of us are trying to fight it. Maybe someday we’ll be able to make it right.” She wasn’t going to promise him that they would. This kid had clearly seen too much of reality to believe in idle promises. But he needed some level of hope or he would waste away.
Crystal reached into her pocket and pulled out a card with her name and how to contact her at the office. She held it out to the boy. “Here. You want to shred it up, that’s fine. But if you ever need something, let me know. I’ll see what I can do.” Kid seemed like he needed someone in his corner. Besides, Aje wouldn’t be here if this was just some arrogant little upstart. He saw something in this kid, and Crystal was willing to trust that.

Tobias frowned and pouted when the teacher stood his ground about homework. He hadn’t asked for guidance on that matter, just to take him here. Af if he could still think clear to do his homework well. Did he want to screw it up and get bad grades? He didn’t want to look like a fool in front of his class that was for sure. “You’re not my dad,” he murmured but as he thought of what he said he couldn’t help but think how much rather he’d have this man as his father than his own. His dad had abandoned him after he became a werewolf. This man was helping him even if he didn’t owe Toby anything. The boy bit his lip as he noticed his eyes were starting to form tears again. He grabbed Professor Odili’s sleeve in a nonverbal apology. Still it was Corey he wanted to take him in. Of course he’d never tell the man. Toby was already grateful for the fact that he could return to Hogwarts which was made possible by Corey.
Now and then he grumbled a little. He didn’t know what the use of this breathing was but as he gave in he did notice he was getting calmer. This exercise prevented him from hyperventilating.
The Gryffindor gasped at the man’s voice of authority. “I didn’t hit hard!” This man seemed to have different morals than Toby. Why was telling someone’s secret okay but hitting not? He took a step back as anger echoed through his teacher’s voice. Aje was being scary right now. Toby didn’t like yelling adults, they scared him and often tried to hurt him. “YOU should apologize to me for telling my secret, I trusted you!” It had happened before with Lupin. Aje had gone and told the man in order to ‘help him’. But that time he sort of agreed. That was different. Lupin was his teacher, he knew that man. This woman was a total stranger and it didn’t matter if she was a friend of Aje or not she was working for the ministry.
The woman turned herself to him. Toby wanted to hide behind his Professor’s back but he was angry with the man right now so he did not. Again there it was. Whenever someone knew what he was Professor Lupin was mentioned. Now Toby didn’t have anything personally against the man but he hated to be compared. Especially because he was very well aware how much of better person Lupin was. People liked Lupin despite what he was because he had done things that earned him respect. What had he ever done? Nothing. “I’m not a war hero like Professor Lupin. I haven’t done anything good,” he whispered with his eyes turned to the floor not sure to whom it was aimed to. Or even if it had anything to do with what Meadowes tried to tell him.
When he was offered a card, he looked up with insecure eyes. He stared at the woman for a moment before his hand started to move hesitantly. He was trembling but he tried to remember the breathing exercises. After a while he had the card between his index finger and his thumb, holding it, not pulling it away but waiting for the woman to let go. His eyes showed that he was unsure if he could trust her but the card wouldn’t randomly explode once she was gone. Right?

Aje was not the boy's father, he was the boy's professor. While he lacked parental authority he had professional authority, especially over the subject of homework. The former auror shrugged his shoulders finally, calmly stating "If you want to fail your studies then do not do your homework. That will not serve you well in the future. Everything here depends on tests, what classes you may take and what jobs you may have. If you want to damage your chances because you are feeling sour and sulking today, then young man... that is your choice." It was his way of washing his hands at the argument, because Aje fought enough in his private life. He was an Order member, there were duels and Death Eaters and he would not let fighting seep into his professional life. That is why he left the Ministry in the first place.
The child had so much disrespect. It was stomach turning but Aje could not turn his back on the boy and leave him. He never turned away someone asking for help, and that is what the boy did. "It does not matter the force of the hit, but the intention. You struck me, and that is unacceptable. You think because you are unhappy that you may treat people however you wish?" Aje was kind and loyal, but he was not a doormat by any means. The child had pushed his buttons and he would not get away from this without a scolding. He had his hands in his pockets, gaze intense at it focused on the Gryffindor. "You are behaving very badly. Miss Meadows is an auror, she has nothing to do with the creature registration and I am the professor that you asked to bring you here. We have done nothing to you and you will not treat us poorly. You will apologize to Miss Meadows before we go any further."
Crystal may have brushed off the need for an apology but he would not let it go. He looked at her and shook his head. "You have not treated him badly. He has no right, and I will not allow such disrespect simply because you work for the Ministry. That is like saying you have a right to treat him poorly for being a werewolf because of the incident in Godric's Hollow." He looked back to the boy, still not done with his life lesson or scolding. "I will not let anyone treat you poorly because you are a werewolf, but I will not let you treat anyone poorly because they are Ministry workers or because you are angry." When the child said that he was owed an apology, Aje twitched into an exasperated smile. Mister Turner was very trying. "You think that she did not know why you were here?" Here on the last day for registration, here while school was in session. "Your secret is very poorly kept." He waved the very notion off, shaking his head with a tired chuckle as if he found it amusing and leaning his large frame back against the wall.
They were not moving until Crystal got an apology, and he watched as the Gryffindor moved to take the card. "Now you say 'Thank You'." If the boy was so lacking with manners, he would teach them to him.
