Mali was a personified cheering charm. She wanted to make people feel better, brighten their days and was constantly thinking of new ways to do that. Right now, her sympathies lay with a very specific group of people and her focus was on them. One idea she had might seem silly to others, but one should never underestimate the power of freshly baked pastries to turn a frown upside down. It was hard not to feel at least a little better with a full stomach, in Mali's not so expert opinion. There was only one problem with the little plot of hers, she was terrible in the kitchen. Ovens trembled and whisks fled in terror when she was near.
Mali understood the power of books. While she was never a Ravenclaw, she did love to read and learn new things so when the need to learn something arose, she headed right to the book shop. This trip was a little victory for her, anyway. While being in the wizarding world alone scared her, Mali managed to make it all the way past the Leaky Cauldron on her own, without pausing to stew in her own anxiety and apprehension for a bit. It was little things that made her day. Once she was passed the pub, everything felt easier. If she could do that, she could do anything. Granted, alleys looked particularly sinister when she was alone and she made sure to walk in the middle of the street so as not to veer too close to the side streets. Her gaze was constantly searching the crowd for signs of trouble and her pace was a little faster than normal but eventually she made it to the book shop.
Once inside the shop, Mali was in pure bliss. The smell of the leather binding and thick pages was almost like amortentia to her, so many options. There were stories, how tos, books on any sort of magic that one's heart could possibly desire. A sea of possibilities lined the shelves and by the time she made it to the section that was home to magical cook books, her arms were already full up of various tomes and volumes. She spotted her prize on the top shelf, a little spiral bound book that smelled like vanilla and boasted a cupcake with color changing frosting on it's cover. The vertically challenged witch eyed the top shelf with a look of determination and tension set in her jaw. Under normal circumstances a witch would just summon the book right off the shelf but Mali had spent months without use of her wand when she was under house arrest and had reverted back to her old muggle ways, the thought of summoning didn't even occur to her.
She looked to her stack of books and back up to her desired purchase. To the stack, to the purchase and to the stack again. The wheels in her head were turning and she set down her stack of books. It wasn't a good idea, she was clumsy on her best days but she needed the book and nothing was going to get in her way. Mali climbed on to the stack, using the shelf for balance. Pushing onto the tips of her toes, she just managed to snag the book when her improvised step stool wobbled and Mali squealed, throwing her arms out in an attempt to right herself again. It was no use, the stack of books toppled over and Mali went backwards, crashing right into some poor soul who was unlucky enough to break her fall.

For the book-lover Kisuke, the nearest wizarding bookstore he could go to would be here - Flourish and Botts - in Diagon Alley that was accessible through the Leaky Cauldron in Muggle London... which was only a couple of stops away from where his family was currently living via the Underground. Stepping through the archway onto the magical street, he was greeted by the usual colorful stores that flanked on both sides of the road, leading up to the white building of the wizarding bank, Gringotts, at the end. Though, the crowd was thinner now compared to the time he brought Miyu here to get his school supplies; all the Hogwarts students should be staying in school until the summer break next year, anyway. Tugging at the midnight-blue muffler around the collar of his khaki trench coat, he scrolled down the street towards the bookstore. Warm air from the heater blew into his face when he entered the shop, tickling his nose with the oh-so-familiar smell of books; he walked further in, squeezing through the copies of newly released volumes piled high towards the ceiling, moving to the far end of the store - where books on divination and the occult stuff were displayed. However, he couldn't help being somewhat distracted by volumes of other subjects along the shelves and display glass cabinets. He decided to take a detour, to skim through more covers of the available books in this shop. He was so absorbed at the books to notice a shadow falling down towards him. He looked up, but was a second too late as the figure rammed into him, forcing him backwards and his back crashed into the shelf behind, knocking down some hardcovers in the process. He thrust out his hands to the person's shoulders on instinct, in an attempt to steady himself and the figure. "...Are you alright?" It was a lady, clearly Asian, and roughly half a head shorter than him. His eyes glanced around at the mess they had caused, before he spotted an odd stack of books in the direction where she had fallen down on him. Putting the two and two together, he commented, "That was... dangerous." Mali JoharOOC:Hope you don't mind me joining this.

It wasn't one of her better ideas, to be honest. She wasn't a creature of balance or grace and the outcome was almost painfully obvious. She squealed as she fell, hands flailing out to try and right herself before the crash. Lucky for the victim of her harebrained idea there wasn't much to her. Mali was small and thin and her tumble didn't have much power behind it. The stranger was even gracious enough to save her from hitting the floor as he hit a bookshelf by way of a steadying hand.
The fall dazed her and it took a moment for her brain to work through what had happened. Once it had caught up she whipped around, eyes wide and babbling out an apology to the unlucky man she'd smashed into. "Ohmygoodness!" Mali could talk a mile a minute, especially when she was upset. The set her prized book down on a random shelf and tugged her wand from it's inside pocket. If only she'd thought of the wand minutes ago. Her healing instincts kicked in pretty powerfully when there was the possibility of injury. "Areyouokay? I'msososorry! I can heal you!" The man didn't seem too disturbed by the incident, commenting on the dangerousness of her book retrieval method.
Her cheeks flushed, gaze drifting back to her makeshift step stool. "I--yeah." she nodded her agreement. In hindsight, it had been a really bad idea. "Yeah, I s'pose it was one of my more reckless ideas. I--Are you alright? Sorry 'bout that." He appeared to be mostly intact and that allowed her to relax a little. Mali eyed the offending tall shelf as if the furniture betrayed her. "I just really needed the book.." Oh! The book! Realization dawned across the Healer's face and she snatched the book back up, grinning with pride as she turned it over in her hands. "This book! It's on magical baking. A friend of mine is having a really rough time and I thought something tasty would cheer him up."

For a moment, Kisuke wasn't sure how he should react, both at how the young woman appeared to be flustered at her clumsiness, and the amusing way she strung her words together when she apologized to him. He couldn't help raising an eyebrow when she offered to heal him... even though the worst injury he could possibly get was a couple of light bruises from crashing into the shelf behind and knocking down the hardcovers, or maybe a few paper-cuts.
...Hang on. Did she just say 'heal'? He swallowed down the urge to ask her if she was a Healer. He shouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly - any wizard or witch would probably learn a spell or two to be able to fix minor injuries like this on their own (which, unfortunately he was hopeless in - Yuko was always the better healer in the family). His brother, on the other hand... He had once contemplated if Skele-Gro might be able to cure Kira's paralysis and allow him to regain the ability to walk again, but he was hesitant - he didn't want Kira to become a guinea pig for magical medicines. He wasn't sure if there might be any side effects on his muggle brother... so it was better for him to check it out with a certified Healer first. "...I'm fine," he finally said, raising a hand with his palm facing towards the Indian lady. "Really."
Relieved that she was calming down and regaining her composure, Kisuke chuckled at her delighted reaction that she had found the book she wanted. "Baking with magic?" he asked, going down on one knee to pick up the fallen books. The shopkeeper might be occupied with other customers to rush here and give them a lecture for making such a mess. Good for them, but better clear this up fast before they really got a scolding that might drag on for the rest of the day. "I can bake some stuff - there's someone in my family who is quite a gourmet - but I try not to be too dependent on magic." He stood up to place the hardcovers back onto the shelf. "I feel like the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment would be greater if I'm able to make something without the need for magic." He then turned his head to look at her. "Hmm... What does your friend like? Or maybe something that can send him a message to cheer him on." He shrugged, and continued to return more books back to where they originally belonged.
He realized that he had unknowingly went with the flow and was being chatty with someone he had just met today, something he would normally avoid doing. He wasn't sure why, but he had a strange hunch that he should continue the conversation, to talk to her more. Was he becoming that desperate to expand his connection with the wizarding community in Britain in order to better pursue his personal goals?

"Ooh." Mali breathed out a sigh of relief, glad to see that the man was in fact alright. "Great, I'm glad to hear that." Maybe he'd leave their little chance meeting a little sore, but he was otherwise intact. The last thing she wanted to do was injure someone. While she was a talented healer, her wand was new and she wasn't confident in it's ability just yet, it was untested. Convinced that the man was undamaged, Mali stowed her wand away, shoving it into the pocket in the lining of her jacket.
She held the book in her hands, grinning down at the cover. It made her just a teensy bit hungry. Her new friend laughed and she peaked up, confusion as to why he would be laughing fluttering across her features. He went to pick up the fallen books and she tucked her cookbook under her arm and crouched down to help. "Mm." the witch nodded. "Baking with magic. I don't use magic as much as I used too." Mali had got caught up in an unfortunate string of events that led to her spending a few months of house arrest while the investigation cleared everything up and while one was under arrest they didn't get to keep their wands. During that time she'd adapted pretty well to doing things the muggle way. It was easier for her than it had been for her boyfriend, Theo. She was born a muggle, he was born a wizard. "But I think it can really enhance some things."
The witch nodded along as he explained that he got a sense of accomplishment without magic and she straightened up and shelved the books collected from the floor. "I s'pose it probably feels like you had a more active role in the outcome." When the conversation turned to her friend she tapped her chin thoughtfully. "I don't know what his favorites are, but I think everyone likes baked goods." Who could resist a freshly baked muffin? After the books were reshelved, Mali went to collect the rest of her purchase, the books she'd used as a step stool. "I only came for the cookbook, but I'm rubbish at just buying one thing in book stores." The witch gathered the books back into a stack and picked them up. They were on an array of subjects, from defensive magic to lycanthropy to a book on healing advanced curse damage. When she turned back to the man, Mali asked "What sort've books have you come for?"

Kisuke lowered his hand, exhaling with a barely audible sigh when the witch was no longer pointing her wand at him and tucking it away in her jacket. He still found it somewhat unnerving when someone directed their wand towards him, regardless of their intention. Not that he was afraid of wand duels, but he would prefer not to get into unnecessary conflicts with anyone, throwing himself into needless troubles... and in turn exploiting his weak spot and getting his family hurt. It would be best to resolve disagreements in a peaceful manner, a win-win conclusion for everyone. Of course he knew that there would be times the only way to settle the dispute was through the use of force, but even so people should try to strive for minimal casualties as much as possible.
...Ah, he was getting off track there. This lady didn't mean him any harm - and was offering the exact opposite instead. He flashed her a small smile as a sign of gratitude for her attempt to make up to him, then went back to pick up more books. Though, the way she said she hadn't used magic in awhile sounded strange. As if it wasn't because she didn't want to... she simply couldn't, for some reason. "I take it that something bad had happened to you, preventing you from casting spells?" he asked, his curiosity got the better of him. However, he found her afterthought a little amusing. "'Enhance some things', eh? You must be very close to this friend of yours."
Satisfied that the fallen hardcovers were back onto the shelf where they belonged, Kisuke straightened up, and loosened the muffler around his neck. It was getting warmer in here - maybe he should take off his coat, but wouldn't it be a little awkward to do that along such a narrow aisle between the shelves? At her opinion about people liked baked goods generally, he responded her with an arched eyebrow. "It's great that your friend isn't a picky type. My son only eats pastries that have chocolates." He shook his head. "Well, at least he doesn't pick on the vegetables, so I guess it isn't so bad." When she asked him about his purpose for visiting this bookstore, he gestured towards the end of the shop. "The shady art of divination and occult arts," he laughed a little at how he had described that section. His gaze fell on the wide range of subjects of the books the witch had in her arms and frowned. She tried to heal him moments ago, and aside from the one on baking, these were all about or related to healing.
"I have been wondering..." he began slowly, looking up from the books to the girl's eyes. "...Could it be that you're a Healer?"

That was the curse of a Hufflepuff. They were too chatty, sometimes spouting off about things they didn't really mean to say. She didn't know this person and if he by the grace of god hadn't heard about her recent..erm.. legal troubles then she didn't need to enlighten him. Mali offered the a strained smile at his question and shook her head. "Not exactly. Sometimes magic is more impractical than doing it yourself." That was true, sometimes it was easier to just grab something rather than pull out a wand and summon an item over.
The witch laughed at the man's implication. "My roommate is a potioneer, he's always looking to enhance things. What can I say? I guess it's rubbed off. There's always room for magical improvement!" There was something special about a bond between father and son, it was always nice to hear parents talk about their children. Mali's mothering instinct was strong, but more when it came to taking care of other people. There was little desire for little ones of her own. "He's got good taste. Pastries are always better with chocolate." Chocolate was a powerful thing, kept the gloom of dementors at bay, Mister Lupin taught her that.
When he called divination 'shady' Mali wrinkled her nose, tilting her head thoughtfully. "Why would you say it's shady? I never understood why some people were so adverse to learning divination. Maybe it's the muggle in me, but if you can believe in the fact that you can create water from a piece of wood why is looking into the future such a difficult thing to believe?" Personally, Mali was dreadful at Divination. She was a run of the mill witch, average in almost every way except healing. That was her niche in life, although she could barely produce a shield charm, Mali was capable of complex healing spells.
Speaking of healing, the stranger examined her intended purchase. She looked down at her stack of books, nodding. "Mmhm." Shifting the stack into one arm she stuck out her newly freed hand as she introduced herself, wide grin settled on her face. "I'm Mali. I specialize in spell damage but I'm pretty handy in all healing modalities. And what's your name?"

Kisuke regarded the tight smile on the young witch's face with a raised eyebrow. She seemed rather reluctant to talk about whatever reason that prevented her from using magic... but why? He took it as a cue not to question her further, and merely responded with a curt nod. "Some things can be done quicker manually than to go through a third medium," he agreed. "And it's dangerous to be overly dependent on convenience... and in turn we start drowning ourselves in the sin of sloth." As she babbled about her friend - roommate - he couldn't help thinking if her relationship with this friend was something much more. Even if the society seemed to be more 'open' in Europe compared to his homeland, he still found it unusual for two young people of the opposite gender (and unrelated by blood) to be living together as if nothing could possibly happen between them. Again, it would be best that he didn't jump to conclusions too quickly about this. When she commented about Miyu's good taste in pastries, he laughed. "If you say so. Chocolate is good, though I'd been hoping he could also give fruit tarts a try. He doesn't like fruits much; he doesn't like sweet or sour food much, you see." The man shook his head - his son was quite a picky eater, and it didn't help that the strict Yuko would use force to make the child eat them at times. Kisuke chuckled at the look of displeasure on the young woman's face. "That was supposed to be a bad joke. Well, I have been told that by many people who are skeptical about the kind of magical arts my family specializes in, which includes Divination." He shrugged. "Though, only my wife is truly capable of the more advanced techniques because she's a direct descendant who has inherited the power and skills, while I was just her... unofficial disciple." He recalled the times Yuko had taught him how to use talismans to perform simple tricks and spells when they were still students in Mahoutokoro; he had also watched her summoning her shikigami, a Kyubi no Kitsune1, to obtain blessing from the spirit before their marriage. He smiled a little to himself at the nostalgic memories that were coming to his mind. The smile widened when the witch, introducing herself as Mali, confirmed his suspicion about her. Well, well... forgetting the slight bruising he could still vaguely feel on his back, maybe today was his lucky day, after all. First, he should return the favor and tell her his name. "Kisuke," he replied; he extended both hands, offering to help her carry her books. "I live in the muggle side of London, which is why I can't use magic much, not in front of so many non-magical people." She had said that she was a spell specialist, but it wouldn't hurt to ask for her opinion about about something he that had been on his mind for a long time... Notes:- Kyubi no Kitsune: Nine-tailed fox, a type of familiar spirit in East Asian mythology.

He was certainly the philosophical one, speaking about sins and convenience. Mali shrugged her shoulders again. "I like sloths, they're cute." Of course she knew he didn't mean the animal, but she was a chatty thing by nature and often veered off on tangents. She was as un-slothlike as they came, more like a bee constantly buzzing with activity. Even as they stood and talked, Mali tapped her book idly against her leg, gaze occasionally wandering from her new companion to the rest of the bookshop whenever a bit of movement caught her eye. Her mind was as incapable of 'sitting still' as the rest of her and was constantly running a mile a minute in five different directions.
"Aah." Mali nodded, listening to the man's plight. A kid who didn't like fruit didn't sound too unusual. She remembered being young, it wasn't all that long ago, and if she could help it she would've eaten nothing but chocolate frogs morning noon and night. Maybe her affinity for sweets had something to do with her hyperactivity. "Maybe you should try some chocolate covered fruit to ease him into it. Strawberries are good for that. I had chocolate covered pineapple awhile ago, you wouldn't think it would be good but it was delicious!" Sweet and tangy mixed with sweet and chocolatey. "Apples are good with caramel, I could only assume they'd be good with chocolate too." All the talk about candy and fruit and tarts was making her hungry and Mali thought she might swing by the sweet shop before heading home.
There was something endearing about someone who smiled when they talked about their family and Mali found herself smiling too. "So you specialize in divination, then?" she asked with a tilt of her head. "My dads are both muggles, but I feel like if they were magic they'd get a kick out of divination." She was pretty fond of her own family. She didn't have a large one, just her and her parents plus Eoin, who wasn't blood but was just as good as, having been her best friend for many years. What her own family lacked in size it made up for in warmth and support and she wouldn't trade them for all the galleons in Gringotts.
Kisuke. "That's a nice name. Does it mean anything?" Mali was all about the power of words and name meanings, finding it fascinating how well meanings usually fit the person. Her offer of a handshake was met with an unspoken offer to carry her books and Mali wasn't one to turn such a thing down, handing her stack over with a bright "Thank you!" And it was definitely a small world. "Ooh, I live in Muggle London too!" she enthused, bouncing excitedly on the tips of her toes. "Just a few blocks from here! The location is fantastic, it's really close to St. Mungo's as well. My roommate and I both work there, he's a pharmacist. My boyfriend actually works there too, he's a Medi-Wizard. I feel like my whole life is at that hospital sometimes."

Kisuke gave Mali a blank look when she made a comment about sloth - it took him a couple of seconds to catch on that she was actually referring to the animal sloth. "Ah, right." The way the witch seemed to fidget every now and then when there were movements near where they currently stood was also making him feeling increasingly distracted. Was she expecting anyone today? Or that she was hoping not to bump into someone she knew? Either way, her bubbly personality was contagious. Especially when the conversation was about food. He couldn't help feeling amused as the animated way Mali talked about the various types of fruits that might go well with chocolate. "Hmm... Chocolate-coated banana 1 is a rather popular snack in my home country," he mused out loud, looking off to one side as he recalled the times he went for the summer festivals when he was still in Japan. "I guess chocolate can go well with pretty much any food. My boy probably won't mind a full-course chocolate feast, but I don't think most people can stomach that much cocoa without getting a diarrhea." He shrugged. It was good that Miyu had little to no interest for generic candies (except for spearmint-flavored mentos) and greater liking for bitter-dark chocolates, but Kisuke hoped that it didn't deter him from being able to socialize with other kids of his age. Partly it was the fault of him and Yuko for being rather strict with him, which made Miyu more aloof than most typical children. When questioned about his specialization, he shook his head. "No, not really - I'd say I'm more apt at exorcism than having the Inner Eye to peek into the coming future." It was ironic, really - he didn't have the luxury to begin his magical education as early as Yuko, who was born with the magical blood that accumulated over the generations in her clan, but he had soon overtaken her in terms of dueling ability. He was the better fighter, and Yuko was happier with being his support when battling against evil spirits to purify them. "I'm a muggleborn, too," he said, his gaze softened at Mali, sharing similar sentiment towards their respective families. Even with him being the only magical person in his family, his parents, not even his brother, had ever asked him to use magic to help them in their daily life. Instead, they would always remind him to never be too dependent on power and forget about hard work to accomplish his goals. "The meaning of my name?" he echoed after Mali, slightly confused at the strange curiosity she had for his name. Oh, right - of course she would be, since Asian names weren't as straightforward as the Europeans... most of the time. "The literal meaning would be someone who... likes to help others, a selfless being," 2 he finally answered, his smile stiffened after those words left his lips. Another irony - he was nothing like the name his parents had given him. Maybe they have made a mistake and switched my name around with Kira's, he thought sarcastically as he carried her books, turning towards the counter. "My family owns a cafe house in London Chinatown - that's a few stops away via the Tube," he said, nodding to her enthusiasm. "And it sounds convenient, to live near your workplace." Boyfriend... so her roommate was just a friend after all, and her life partner was someone else. Hmm, he shouldn't read too much into that, but if this was a television drama show, it would be natural for anyone to assume that their relationship was more than what it seemed. That aside, another jackpot for Kisuke - Mali said she wasn't technically a Healer and more of a spell-reversal specialist, but she had connections with Healers. "Speaking of your profession - and your boyfriend's, I guess - I actually have a question for you..." he began slowly, careful to keep his tone neutral and suppress the rising emotion that there was a way to save Kira, which was was right before him now. "...About the possibility to heal someone from paralysis. Someone I know... a friend, who is now wheelchair-bound due to an accident. I'm looking for a way for him to be able to stand up and walk again." He paused, formulating an excuse to make this sound... less suspicious. Hopefully. "It's inconvenient for me to bring him all the way to St. Mungo's from where he lives - you know, it would attract unwanted muggle attention if we attempt magical means of transportation carelessly - so I thought it's best that I ask around to be sure first." Today was his lucky day, indeed. Notes:- Chocolate banana: A type of street snacks in Japan, most commonly seen during Japanese festivals (e.g. Tanabata, shrine events, etc). It's made by dipping a peeled banana on stick into chocolate fudge, then decorate it with toppings before allowing the fudge to cool and harden. There's also a variation suitable to bring home as souvenir, called Tokyo Banana.
- Kisuke's first name, when written out in Kanji, is 喜助; "喜" - like, "助" - help/helpful. Hence the literal meaning as explained by Kisuke in the IC above. There are other kanji combinations for the romanji name "Kisuke", hence why Japanese names (in fact, even Chinese) may involve multiple meanings, depending on the specific characters used.
