Life had gotten a little busy lately, so this meeting had been delayed much longer than Becca would have liked. But finally she had found time to stop off at the pub. Jon would probably consider this her cheating on the Leaky Cauldron, but it had to be done. And not just so Becca could try and weasel out the true stories behind his famous broken nose, although that would definitely be a nice bonus. But she was here because the Ministry was tightening its noose on creatures by the day. If there really were werewolves at the Three Broomsticks, and the Ministry's interest was making that look more likely by the day, then they were going to need help. Help Becca’s connections just might be able to provide. Personally, Becca had never had much of a stance on creatures before Connor’s marriage. She had been far too focused on blood status and the crimes its champions committed. But Claire had been raised by a werewolf, and Becca’s sister-in-law was one of the kindest people Becca had ever met. Besides, the enemy of my enemy and all that. And the Ministry was most definitely becoming the enemy. The pub was doing fairly average business for a Thursday night. One of the slower nights in Becca’s opinion. Probably because everyone was gearing up for Friday night. But that meant the bartender would be less busy, which made it perfect for conversation. Becca wove her way through the tables to the bar and set her satchel on the surface as she slid into a seat in front of the bartender. Cute girl. Definitely Jon’s sister. Becca gave her a smile and held out her hand. “Meg, right? I’m Becca. Jon’s friend. You said I could drop by.” Now came the complicated bit. Family connections had gotten her this far, but if Meg really did know something, Becca had a feeling that wouldn’t be shared easily. Especially not with a reporter. Somehow she had to convince this girl to trust her. And Becca knew from experience how hard it was to trust an outsider when family was on the line. But the lives of the werewolves here just might depend on it. Meg Ashland

Another day, another Galleon. Meg liked Thursdays at the pub. All her regulars were there, just like every other day of the week - but they were generally in much better spirits, as compared to every other day of the week. People didn't go to the pub on a Monday to drink for fun, but Thursday was a different story. The atmosphere was bright and warm inside without being too crowded or wound up, like it would inevitably be tomorrow (snow drove people inside warm places like no other force). Not that Meg really minded that, either. It was all in her element. It was just nice to have a day in the week where everyone was both amicable and laid back, where there was no need to rush and Meg could do her very favorite thing - talk people's heads off.
A slight lull came over the bar when a new face joined them. Meg smiled at the new arrival, a woman, and began to offer her a drink - but the woman introduced herself first. Ah! Jon's friend. "Hi! Yes that's me. It's nice to meet you!" Meg shook her hand enthusiastically. Anybody that liked Jon was good people in Meg's book. Even reporters. Yes, Meg asked and asked and asked about this Rebecca O'Brien until she got her answers - because anyone that liked her brothers were also set up for intense scrutiny from Little Sister.
Even so, Meg already liked this reporter friend of Jon's a lot more than the reporters that were visiting Theo some weeks ago. Probably because she wasn't snarling and frothing at the mouth, at least not yet. Those months put a very bad taste in Meg's mouth when it came to reporters and the media in general, but Rebecca seemed nice enough. Plus, Meg kept having to remind herself, she was Jon's friend. She trusted her eldest brother's judgment of people more than most other people's, sometimes for the worse, mostly for the better. "About that drink," Meg grinned once their shake was through. "What would you like?"

Meg certainly seemed chipper. And there was something almost innocent about her childlike smile. Not at all like someone who was secretly harboring werewolf colleagues. Then again, that could be exactly why it worked. “The pleasure’s all mine,” Becca assured her. She had wanted to meet Jon’s sister anyway. She just wished it could’ve been under less serious circumstances. “Jon talks about you all the time. All good things.” Well, aside from the usual lighthearted mockery that older siblings tended to engage in.
Apparently it just wasn’t a meeting with an Ashland without a drink. Becca shrugged in answer. “Bartender’s choice. What do you recommend?” She wasn’t too picky when it came to drinks, especially if there was pleasant company. Which certainly seemed to be the case tonight. Besides, she could use the chance to build up a little good will before she destroyed it all by revealing why she was really here.
With that in mind, Becca leaned forward slightly with a grin on her face as Meg set about fetching the drink. “This may seem a little crazy, but I have to ask. You wouldn’t by any chance be able to tell me how your brother broke his nose, would you? See, we have this drinking game going where we make up stories about how he did it, and if I actually got one right, his face would be priceless.” It was really a bit of a tossup as to whether she would get a solid answer. Becca knew all too well how happily siblings could dish out stories on one another. But Meg also might be the sort to let loyalty win out. Still, it was worth a try. And Becca refused to consider this cheating. She was simply making use of all the resources at her disposal.

"Better be all good things," Meg said with a wink, trying to grumble it out but ending up giggling instead. That wasn't really ever their style, doting on one another and being sickly sweet. How else could you really show someone you loved them if you didn't vaguely insult them every once in a while? If her brothers ever stopped making fun of her - or she them - Meg would really start to worry. Though...she supposed that really was only when they were around one another, available for picking on. She bragged on them like they were the best people in the world (and they were, two of them at least) otherwise. And Jon was the brother most likely to do the same for her.
Bartender's choice - those were dangerous words. Meg loved to experiment, when her customers would let her. Because this woman was Jon's friend, though, and because word of a disgusting failure of a cocktail would most certainly get back to her fellow bartender of a brother - Meg would at least ask first. "Are you adventurous?" She grinned, rummaging around for several bottles and a glass to put them in. "I've got this new idea...it's sort of a caramel apple...something. I'm not sure what yet. But it's really good, and really boozy." While she waited for permission, Meg went ahead and poured some apple cider into two mugs and warmed it up with her wand, taking a sip from one for herself. "Or you can just drink this with nothing else, it's so awesome. Some bloke down the street makes it."
At Becca's question, Meg laughed. Apparently Jon was still playing this old game with people! She grinned apologetically at Becca, shaking her head and throwing her arms up. "Would you believe it, he's never even told his own sister? I honestly have no idea! Did you know he's actually broken it four times, though? I'm fairly certain Theo's had to have broken it at least once. He's our other brother, have you met him?"

Meg’s eyes seemed to light up when Becca handed the decision to her. “I’ve got four siblings,” Becca said drily in answer to the question. “And I’m friends with Jon.” As much as she liked the oldest Ashland, she couldn’t resist the subtle jab. Worst case scenario this would make a good story to tell at the weekly O’Brien family dinner. Somehow she doubted it would come to that though. Bartending seemed to run in the Ashland blood. And caramel apple actually sounded good. “It sounds interesting. Lay it on me.”
No dice with the nose breaks. Rats. Becca sighed. “It was worth a shot. Although if he hasn’t even told you, it must be pretty embarrassing.” Her eyes were twinkling now. Jon was one of the best friends she had (becoming sole guardian of her siblings had pretty much killed her social life up until pretty recently), but what good were friends if you couldn’t poke a little fun at them? Especially when their siblings were involved. Becca lowered her voice into a more conspiratorial tone. “He always makes up these elaborate stories that make him look all heroic, but personally, I think he probably stepped on a rake or something.” Although a fight was also a solid possibility. Jon had definitely helped Becca defend her own honor more than once during their school days. It was half of why they were friends. As far as she knew though, he hadn’t broken his nose in any of those heroics. “I haven’t had the pleasure yet. Jon talks about him a lot though.” Half of the point of their little gettogethers was so they could blow off steam about their siblings. And one-up each other with how stupid their brothers could be. Becca knew all sorts of stories about Theo.
Unfortunately, this visit wasn’t all about fun. Becca’s smile faded and she took a casual glance around the pub to be sure it was clear of enforcers as she finally got down to business. “As much as I would love to talk about your brothers all day, I have a little bit of business I need to get out of the way. And it’s probably better if you let me finish before you say anything.” She highly doubted Meg would want to confirm having werewolf colleagues, so it was important that Becca get through her whole sales pitch before she got shut down. “My sister-in-law works as a beast liaison in the Ministry. Her father was a werewolf, so certain recent events are fairly personal for our family. And I have reason to believe they might be for you too. That some of your friends might need some help.” She reached into her pocket and tugged out a business card that she placed on the counter. “I know you don’t know me, and I won’t blame you if you don’t trust me. I probably wouldn’t either in your position. I’m not asking you for names. In fact, it’s probably better the less I know. But I don't agree with certain moves the Ministry is making. So if you or your friends need a set of eyes in the Daily Prophet or the Ministry, or if there’s any other way I can help, all you have to do is ask. Or if you don’t know what I’m talking about,” here she paused for a long look at Meg to show that this was indeed a chance for a clean exit regardless of whether or not it was true, “then we’ll move on and this conversation never happened.” It was completely up to Meg.

"Good point," Meg nodded, with a quiet giggle as she pulled bottle after bottle. Becca opened up to Meg's suggestion and Meg lit up, nodding again and scurrying to make the drink. In her haste, she knocked the glass over - luckily, before she'd put anything in it - and it rolled to the edge of the bar. She had to jump to the side to catch it, but catch it she did - bartending did run in their blood after all. Meg slowed herself down to make the drink properly after that. She grinned at Becca all the while, not really needing to look down to see what she was doing. Teasing her siblings (gently, of course) just happened to be one of Meg's very favorite hobbies. "I bet it's super embarrassing," she snickered. "Mhm. He does that. Both things - tries to make himself sound like the Chosen One, and he steps on a lot of rakes." All in good fun. Becca hadn't met Theo - and honestly, if Jon talked about him a lot, it was probably for the best. She probably knew everything she needed to know about Drama Queen Supreme. "You've got to come have dinner with us all sometime, then," she offered halfheartedly anyway.
Meg finished off the drink and passed it off to Becca - who was, she found with some concern, no longer smiling. Meg tilted her head as the other woman began quite a little speech. Meg didn't really like being told to be quiet, but she tried her best for the sake of Jon's friend, biting down on her bottom lip. Of, it was about werewolves. Always the werewolves. Meg thought she was doing so good about staying quiet about her coworkers but people were bothering her all the time and it was bloody tiring. She tried her best not to show it on her face, but Meg wasn't very good at that either.
Becca didn't want to exactly bother her, though. At least, that's what she was making it sound like. She wasn't demanding anything, just offering. It was a far better tactic than some others already used on Meg, she had to admit. Still... "You can't blame me if I don't trust you," she repeated, quiet and distracted. She slid the business card to her side of the bar and looked at it for a moment. Fancy. Official. Didn't exactly inspire trust in Meg. "I get a lot of people in here, you know, asking a lot of questions." It was her turn to pause, to try to speak with her eyes (another thing she wasn't good at, subtlety - unless it was important). No matter who she did or didn't trust, it wasn't safe to talk here. "Pretending they want to help when they really just want something from me. I never have what they want." Becca said she didn't want names. Good. Because Meg wasn't giving names. She wasn't giving anything. She'd grown into quite the suspicious creature, questioning people's motives where before she trusted every stranger with blind faith. She'd promised to keep her friends safe and that's just what she had to do now. She probably could have used all that help that people were supposedly offering; but how could she possibly figure out who to trust? "Thanks for this," she flashed the card and slipped it into her pocket.
