Things were all out of sorts with Mali. She and Theo were very tense, Mister Lupin and her were very...not tense. Things were easy with him, like they used to be with Theo. There was laughter, sweet moments and a feeling of intimacy but unlike Theo, Remus didn't occupy her thoughts when her mind was idle. That was something especially reserved for her handsome man troll, he was still the one who made her heart skip a beat or five. Perhaps the best way to get back to normal was to make Theo see her side of the argument, to prove that she could do the same things he could.
The fight had started when she made the big switch from Specialist to Medi-Witch. Theo thought it was too dangerous, that it wasn't her cup of tea and Mali took it as him implying that she wasn't talented or skilled enough to do the same job he could. If things were reversed, if Theo moved to a floor and decided that he wanted to specialize then she would help him refine his healing magic, not discourage him. It hurt that he wouldn't do the same, maybe that was the problem. Maybe she wasn't quite up to snuff yet, but if he wasn't even going to try and help her then maybe he didn't think she was capable of learning it. Of course that wasn't what they fought about, when it came up (and it did so often) she whined that he didn't want to work with her, that if it wasn't safe then he shouldn't be doing it either. There was not enough nerve in her whole entire body to bring that insecurity up and she was afraid of getting it confirmed.
So, Mali was on her own. She'd improve, and she'd show him. Show him, and anyone else who thought her change was ridiculous. One thing that definitely need improvement was her apparating skills. Medi-Witches and Wizards had to apparate without splinching themselves every fifth trip or so, and they had to safely bring along injured people when the situation called for it. The witch found a secluded place by the shrieking shack, the building had been in the news last month when someone set it on fire, but it looked pretty deserted today. She set up a hoop in the snow like they used to teach apparition back in Hogwarts and stood several meters away, twisting on her heel and attempting to appear in the center of the ring.
There were several louds cracks and she hadn't managed to make it in the middle. A few times she overshot it, another time she ended up too far to the right, and once she ended up further away than when she started. Mali lost several strands of hair and a fingernail as her frustration grew but she refused to give up. She stared the hoop down through narrowed eyes, determined that she would make it this time. With a deep breath, the newly minted Medi-Witch turned back on her heel, face screwed up in concentration. There was a pop and Mali disappeared only to crack back into being standing with one foot in the hoop and one foot out. It was the closest she'd come and Mali, pleased with herself, squealed in delight and hopped up and down, clapping her hands in glee.
Her victory dance was cut short when she heard someone behind her. Mali whipped around while drawing her wand, a little jumpy and suspicious of others when she was off by herself.

School was finally out after what had seemed like an endlessly long first term of school. OWL year was stressing Lucy out more than it needed to, so it was good to finally have a break. One that she had decided to spend at least the first part of out of the house. She missed her sisters, but the good-natured quarrelling would do her head in if she stayed there twenty-four hours a day. She was currently in Hogsmeade - she'd already been into the Three Broomsticks for a butterbeer and a Christmas cookie, and now she was headed towards the Shrieking Shack. From the side, there was an excellent view of the castle, and Lucy enjoyed sitting down and watching Hogwarts. It was crazy how much she loved the school. She couldn't quite fathom life without it. The castle was big and its stone walls lit up in the sunlight. It was always breathtaking to look at.
As Lucy got closer, however, there was loud crack from... from inside the shack? Lucy jumped slightly at the noise and then peered curiously towards the entrance. She was brave enough to stand outside the shack; even lean against it, but she'd never worked up the courage to go inside. She left that sort of thing to the Gryffindors. There was another crack, though this time Lucy managed to keep herself composed. It sounded like someone was apparating or something. Lucy's curiosity was piqued, though a small measure of fear made her apprehensive. It could be anyone, doing anything, inside. Perhaps it was one of the terrifying spirits that all the kids talked about when they told ghost stories at night. Lucy took a few steps towards the shack and then paused, wavering. There was another crack that definitely sounded like someone apparating, and the Slytherin's curiosity won out.
Lucy closed the distance between her and the door, pausing and taking a deep breath. She imagined the looks on the faces of her friends when she told them she'd been inside the shack. Carefully, she pushed open the door, another crack blocking out the sound of the creaky hinges. There was a rather loud squeal, and Lucy found something she had not been expecting. A woman with dark hair who didn't look all that much older than Lucy was jumping up and down, clapping her hands. Lucy supposed she'd achieved her apparition goal - she was standing in a ring on the ground. A rather sensible way to practice the branch of magic, Lucy thought. She stepped forward, intrigued by this woman who did her apparition practice inside an abandoned, rumoured-to-be-haunted old shack, and the next thing she knew, said woman was spinning around with her wand out. Perhaps the rumours were true. Lucy took a hurried step back, and put her hand instinctively towards her coat pocket, where her wand was. "Shit, I'm sorry, I can leave, you can... you can just do your apparition thing," she stumbled out clumsily, taking another more cautious step backwards. Was this a death eater? She didn't look bad. But Lucy took one more step backwards, just in case.

Mali should be terrified of the shack, of nasty spirits and the creaking, settling wood but the Shrieking Shack held a special place in her heart. It was the background for a date and the start of the most beautiful and treasured thing that Mali had, her relationship with Theo. While others might find the shack to be stark and dreary, it was full of warmth and a fantastic memory for her. It was also a very clever place for apparition practice, most would be deterred due to the shack's dark and seedy history. Apparently hauntings didn't deter those with a strong enough sense of curiosity. The groan of old floorboards gave the young girl away and Mali whipped around faster than even she thought possible. Someone lurking through the shack couldn't have had good intentions, could they?
Her heart dropped into her stomach, beating a mile a minute as she turned. There was really no practical use to holding the girl at wandpoint. The incantation to all defensive and offensive spells jumbled up into a lump in her throat, her wand was unsteady due to trembling hands. As much as she wanted to be, Mali would never be a fighter. That was better left to people like Remus and Theo. Remus was just all around briliant and Theo never let fear paralyze him, it provoked him into action. She usually crumbled under pressure and tension, better suited for support roles. The girl was speaking but the adrenaline pumping through her system drowned her voice out. After a pulse pounding moment, Mali lowered her wand. The girl looked frightened and that made her feel very uncomfortable. "What?" she asked, shaking her head to clear the adrenaline-laced haze from her head.
She held her wand loosely at her side, looking around to see if anyone else had invaded her practice space. The girl, she was a girl, too. Looked to be Hogwarts age, seemed to be alone. "What are you doing here?" There was a hint of irritation in her voice, not only that she was interrupted but that someone saw her practicing something as simple as apparation. Mali knew that she was very average when it came to magic and she coped with that pretty well but to have to practice something that seventeen year olds did with ease? That was a slight blow to her pride. "Shouldn't you be in school or something?"

Thinking back, Lucy was very unclear on what exactly had made her take a step towards the woman in the shack. She was in the Shrieking Shack, practicing magic and she wasn't facing Lucy. All the Slytherin had to do was back away slowly, and the woman would never have even known she was there. She could have sat at the side of the shack in peace - well aside from the occasional loud pop of the apparition. It just hadn't occurred to her that a woman standing in a ring who looked to be about twenty practicing apparition could be dangerous. Apparently she was wrong - or at least it seemed that way, with the wand pointed at her and all.
Lucy made a hasty and slow retreat all at once. She didn't want to be in the firing line of the wand, but sudden movements were supposed to provoke such things, right? So Lucy took a cautious step back and then another managing to spit something out about leaving that sounded far too pathetic for Lucy's liking. She may not be a Gryffindor, but she liked to think she was brave enough to keep her voice steady.
Not that it mattered too much. The woman lowered her wand and seemed not to have heard what Lucy said (which was good, because Lucy wasn't one hundred percent sure what she said either). The fifth year shook her head in answer and couldn't stop the small breath of relief that escaped her when the wand was no longer aimed at her. Suddenly it didn't seem quite so frightening anymore, though Lucy was hyper-aware of the fact that the wand hadn't left the woman's hand.
When the woman spoke again, she sounded less confused and more angry. Or perhaps angry was too strong a word - she was more annoyed than anything. Probably because Lucy had interrupted her. "I, uh, heard noises," Lucy said, please at the lack of pathetic-ness in her voice this time. "I come here to sit and watch the castle. But I heard you apparating - were you trying to get into the hoop, by the way? That's a smart way to practice. Landing in an exact position sounds like a bloody nightmare. I won't learn until next year." Perhaps it was the relief or perhaps it was the hint of nerves still waiting for action, but Lucy was suddenly the opposite of pathetic, and her voice seemed to rattle off of its own accord, spewing out words that Lucy herself was hardly aware of. "Anyway, I head you apparating - it's pretty noisy stuff - and I thought now was a better time than any to go in. I've never been in before. My friends seem to think it's daring enough that I like to sit outside it and lean against it." At the woman's second question, it occurred to Lucy once again that she probably wasn't wanted here. She left a pause before she answered.
"Schools out," she said with a small shrug. "For Christmas." Another pause followed this. And then… "I'm Lucy, by the way. I'm, um, sorry for just sorta barging in on your… practice. I just wanted to see inside. Wasn't thinking." She held out her hand, figuring that it was the polite thing to do. Another part of her wondered what on earth she was doing, offering her hand to some stranger in the Shrieking Shack who had been pointing a wand at her only moments ago. But for some reason, Lucy didn't feel quite so threatened by this person anymore. The more she looked at her the more she became convinced that she wasn't going to hurt her. "I can leave, if you want." But Lucy didn't want to leave. This woman was rather interesting, a little familiar and the fact that she wasn't scared shit-less by being inside the shack intrigued the Slytherin girl very much.
