His visit was only barely announced, a note scribbled on a crumpled scrap of parchment stating he would be by shortly and that they had to talk, sent via one of the Ministry's owls. It was a terrible thing that Gabriel was tasked with, but it was one he took upon himself. Werewolves had very recently been stripped of their right to own a wand and the Ministry wasn't waiting for them to come in and surrender the wands themselves, they were sending out representatives to take them. He didn't agree with this directive and would have preferred to distance himself from it as much as he could but there was a werewolf he cared for very much. The thought of almost anyone else walking up the same walk he was currently trekking up, knocking on the same door he would knock on and taking the wand was very uncomfortable. Maybe one of his friends would have been acceptable, but Gabe thought it ought to be him. They were together now, and this was something he would have to help him work through. The weather was nice, the sky was a beautiful clear blue and the air was crisp with the perfect bite of warm sunshine. Gabriel couldn't really enjoy the weather as he shuffled up the walk outside Remus' home, he felt absolutely bleak inside. When Gabe had left home he intended to be one of the good guys, to make a difference but it was becoming increasingly clear that Death Eaters weren't the only enemy to be weary of. What was worse is he didn't know who was more terrible, the Ministry he worked for or the Death Eaters who were trying to organize and rise up spouting the same rhetoric. The Ministry was more discreet about it's wickedness, slowly seeping in to society's bloodstream like a slow acting poison. He wasn't just some bystander watching it happen, either. Gabriel was one of the moving parts in the monster machine, allowing it to carry out it's objective of stripping certain citizens of their dignity. Gabriel looked almost like he always did as he arrived on the door step of the werewolves home. He wore the same jeans and plain knit t-shirt, his long blonde hair was pulled back away from his face in a messy ponytail and he stood with the same careless bad posture as always. There were subtle differences, though. There was no cocky half grin or playful charm, he wore his auror badge clipped to his hip and Gabe worried his lower lip between his teeth as he waited for Remus to answer the door. Gabriel was standing with his hands in the pockets of his jacket when the wizard appeared in the doorway. "Hello Remus." he said, voice flat and heavy with regret. He pulled a folded piece of parchment from his pocket, an order from the Ministry demanding that Remus J Lupin be relieved of his wand. He didn't know what else to say, so he just offered it out to the man while simultaneously resisting the urge to pull him close and protect him from all that was wrong in the world. "I thought it would be easier if it were me rather than someone else. I'm sorry. It can be quick, I just need your wand. I'm so sorry." He was sincere, but his tone carried a pleading edge. He needed Remus to understand that this was necessary and that he knew that Gabriel was only trying to soften the terrible blow. Remus Lupin

They needed to talk? Lead poured into Remus' gut at the few short words of Gabriel's note, sent by a very official looking owl (Remus didn't even register it as one of the Ministry's, in his shock). Those words didn't bode well. They weren't words he expected at all in the middle of the day, either, and they blindsided him. If they hadn't...Remus might have left. Not been there when Gabriel showed up, so he didn't have to hear whatever the man had to say. Remus was still vulnerable, still overthinking everything there was to overthink. He questioned his every decision on his own and he didn't know if he could take someone else questioning them right now, not again. The lead in Remus' gut solidified the more he worried and he sat heavily on his living room couch, waiting.
Remus' head was clearly out of whack, evidenced by what he was giving so much worry to and what he wasn't giving much of a second thought to at all. He'd heard the talk, of the wand ban. Remus just didn't have it in him to worry about those things too much anymore. He was a man who had everything taken from him, more than once, at some point in his life. And he always managed, somehow. He was still alive, at any rate. But people...Remus couldn't lose anymore of those. His craving for companionship was stronger than any other force in him, it always had been, and the continuous loss of people he cared about was more debilitating than hunger or loss of magic. Remus managed to keep himself alive but he never managed to keep himself alone.
And as he sat on his couch and waited, he blamed himself. It was clear to him this was the very reason why Gabriel was coming to talk to him. Remus was too needy. He was too much, in general. He'd worked himself into quite the funk by the time there was a knock on the door, so much so that the sight of Gabriel behind it pulled only half of its usual smile to Remus' face. "Hi." Gabriel didn't look happy but Remus didn't have time to examine every inch of him - the man was handing him a note. He'd already sent him an owl, so that was sort of strange...Remus brought his eyebrows together and unfolded the parchment.
Remus' face cycled through such a rapid series of emotions he was in danger of pulling a facial muscle. The official Ministry parchment, strangely enough, initially brought him relief. This was Ministry business, not Gabriel's. The words on the parchment, though...now that they were being addressed directly to him, Remus J Lupin, now he had time to worry about them. The Ministry wasn't demanding their wands. They were coming after them. Anger colored the new expression on Remus' face.
"They're not allowed to do this. There was nothing in the Act-" It wasn't anger at Gabriel, though. Remus took a mental step back when he looked back up at the man, cutting himself off and listening to his voice of reason. Gabriel was doing nothing here but his job. He was even trying to make it easier on Remus...all of Remus' thoughts from when he was waiting flooded from him now. His face crumpled; he had to tense his whole body up to regain his composure. He wanted to apologize for even thinking it. Gabriel sounded so sincere, so...real, was the word for it. He wasn't someone Remus had made up in his head.
"I'm sorry. I'll go...I'll go get it. It's upstairs." Remus lingered in the doorway for a beat too long and then reached behind Gabriel to shut the front door, leading the man inside with a gentle hand on his back. It probably wouldn't be good for either of them for him to stay too long right now; but Remus wasn't going to leave him standing on the doorstep. He hurried up the stairs and fished his wand out of his bedside table.
Once it was actually in his hand, Remus felt another flood of emotion, like it was coming from the wand itself. Like magic. He'd had this one for a pretty long time. He'd gotten it when he first started his serious study of wandless magic; his previous wand had been too jealous, and had stopped working for him entirely once it learned Remus could sometimes do magic without it now. Remus had never used this current wand all too much - but he usually took it with him, at least, and kept it in a safe spot in the house so he could always find it. He felt an inexplicable nakedness without it; like it was one more link that connected him to wizard, man, and not beast.
Before the time he spent upstairs became suspicious, Remus tucked the wand into his palm and headed back down the stairs. He went back to Gabriel, holding the wand handle-end out to him. "You're not causing yourself any trouble doing this, are you?" He tried to smile and he tried not to feel so bloody ashamed but he failed pretty miserably at both and his voice sounded uncharacteristically small. Not having a wand wouldn't be as devastating to Remus as it would be to other werewolves (and he'd get to work on that as soon as Gabriel left, by Merlin) - but there was nothing like a little sanctioned discrimination to knock a man down a peg or two on his self-esteem. The Ministry was working so hard nowadays to strip away all of the good things Remus spend forty years trying to believe about himself, and they were doing it in one-tenth the time.

This felt like it could be easier on him, too. Remus might've had time to stew and worry with his pre warning via owl, but at least that meant he wouldn't have to watch a full on happy smile melt away from his face. Remus was a captivating man, his scars made his face interesting and hinted at an intriguing past. They gave him a hard, thorny edge that was able to be blunted and softened by a smile. It would've killed him to see his face cycle through happiness straight to heartbreak. It wasn't such a shock to him, this way. He could've avoided it all together by pretending not to know about the whole ordeal, hiding his nose in the stack of parchment waiting for him at his desk and let someone else break the man's spirit but he owed it to Remus, didn't he?
That was a marked change in Gabriel. He was a nice guy, don't get him wrong, but he often put his needs above everyone else's. Maybe no relationship had mattered as much as this one, or maybe being around Remus actually made him want to be a better person but ducking his head and pretending that the man's dignity wasn't getting stripped away wasn't something that he could do. Gabriel has to be here, at Remus' side when it happened so he could offer a shoulder to lean on or cry into. The auror was braced for despair, but not for anger. Luckily he was well practiced in keeping a good grip on his emotions. The man tightened his jaw and the expression on his face changed into something more neutral and passive. "I know." he agreed softly. What could they do? The Ministry couldn't do this but who was a higher authority?
Gabriel's heart crumpled right along with Remus' face. There was a painful tightness in his chest and his stomach twisted itself into uncomfortable knots. This was wrong, it was so so wrong. The feeling of Remus' hand on his back, sweeping him inside felt wrong and so did standing just inside his doorway. Gabriel was an invader, come here to rob the man of one of the links anchoring him to his humanity. A wand was a wizard's extension of themselves and he was taking that. It wasn't necessarily by force but it might as well be. Remus had no choice but to comply even if he wanted to fight him on it. The werewolf's hands were tied, the Act laid out the penalty for harming a wizard pretty clearly and Remus' wouldn't risk losing his children while he was away in Azkaban.
Moments ago he'd said it could be quick, Gabriel wanted it to be quick for his own sake but it wasn't fair to rush Remus through such a thing. "Take your time." he told the man's retreating back, crossing his arms over his chest as if it could defend from all the awful feelings settling in. Remus soon returned and was ready to relinquish his wand, but the auror wasn't quite ready to take it. His blue eyed gaze was fixed on the wand handle. It even looked like it belonged in Remus' hand and to present it in such a way was dishonoring the instrument. Gabriel lost himself for a moment there, frozen by the wrongness of it all 'til Remus spoke. He tore his attention away from the wand to the poor man's face, sympathy giving the tightness a sharp edge. "Not at all." He did manage a very strained smile for him as he reached out and took the wooden instrument from him.
He had to say something, had to make it better. Gabriel was very desperate to make it easier on Remus and said the very first thing that came to mind. "I won't let them destroy your wand." It was a promise that he didn't know how to keep but by God he would do everything in his power to do it. The wand felt far too heavy and foreign and he set it down on the nearest end table before taking Remus' face in his hands. "Alright? I won't let them." He looked the werewolf straight in the eye, genuinely meaning every word he spoke. "This isn't fair, but it's only temporary." Gabriel stroked his thumb along the older man's cheek, right over one of the scars. "We'll figure out a way to fight them on this." A way that wouldn't see them into Azkaban. Political activism was a big thing back home, protesting and fighting laws people didn't like. "We'll figure out a way to work this out."

It didn't take much from Gabriel to make Remus feel like everything was going to be okay. Everything wasn't going to be okay, and Remus knew that, but just a look and a few soft words from Gabriel let him feel like it could be. Like it would be, in the moments whenever the young Auror was around. That was more than enough for Remus. He was used to nothing being okay and could just be grateful for the refuge the other man provided. It was gratefulness that ate right through any anger the world incited in Remus, and it all it took was a look and softly spoken phrase.
Those looks and words were part of the reason Remus didn't bother with the time upstairs that Gabriel urged him to take. The longer he dwelt on this alone, the hotter the anger returned. May as well get it over with, pass the baton, so to speak. Once it was out of his hands, Remus would have an easier time accepting and letting go of that anger. Maybe he could convince Gabriel to stay for tea, or something. He was sure that would help, too.
Even with all the tea and handsome blondes in the world, the actual moment of turning in his wand was tough. Remus couldn't help but feel ashamed; the Ministry had always been most excellent at making an innocent man feel like the world's most heinous criminal. Remus felt as dangerous as they said he was, in times like these, and it made him feel dirty. He had a hard time meeting Gabriel's eyes, which wasn't really an issue because Gabriel wasn't looking at him either. The passing over of his wand, an act of half a second, felt stretched to an hour.
And then it was gone. Gabriel had his wand. Remus shuffled on the carpet, feeling a bit lightheaded. He didn't really need a wand, but now he didn't have one. He wasn't allowed one. He wasn't allowed to have what other wizards had because there were people, a good chunk of quite powerful people, who didn't consider Remus a wizard. He was an animal. Thoughts like that were beyond the realm of logic and sense, the two powers Remus used to order the world, and they made him feel very small. Powerless.
His gaze shot up from the floor at Gabriel's promise. Gabriel. Refuge. Safety. Remus watched him set his wand down and then he all but collapsed into the other man's hands. So grateful for those hands. "Don't get in trouble for me." Remus nuzzled against the thumb on his cheek, letting pain and hurt and shame float to the surface to show on his face among all his scars, because Remus was vulnerable but there was nothing more vulnerable than surrendering oneself to the mercy of another. Gabriel wanted to fight for him. He wanted to make the world easier for Remus. Remus stepped in closer, past Gabriel's hands to his arms, and hid his face in the man's shoulder. "I know we will. I know." They were a we. Their troubles were the same, to some extent. Remus rolled his head to peek up at Gabriel from his shoulder. "Can you stay? I need to thank you and the only way I can think of right now is a stupid cup of tea."

Gabriel completely loved being an auror. It had been his life goal, and now he was living the dream. Only it didn't feel like a dream. Aurors were supposed to be all about protecting the innocent and banishing darkness to rot in the dank cells of Azkaban but that wasn't what he was doing now. He was working as an agent of a sociopathic dictator. Not a Minister, but someone who decided to target a group of people.. The Minister didn't believe that werewolves were people, but gods just look at the man. His human face (albeit scarred), his human hands and his very human emotions. Creatures didn't shuffle their feet on the carpet because they were being stripped of their rights and their dignity.
His promise sat heavily on his shoulders, weighing him down. Gabriel had no earthly idea how he was going to pull it off, but nothing felt more important in that moment than saving his wand. He'd sneak it back and turn in his own, if he had too. He still had his American wand tucked away among the packed boxes shoved off in the corner of his living room. Remus didn't want to get in trouble for him. "Some things are worth getting in trouble for." Like that little tingle of warmth Remus gave him, that soothed away some of the worries. As long as they had moments like this then everything would be okay. It had to be, because this felt so warm and right. "We'll be fine." There he was, using the word 'we' again. Remus used it too as the man stepped into his embrace. While Gabriel was fortunate enough not to be afflicted by lycanthropy, Remus fight was going to be his fight too. That's how it went when you were a 'we'.
He wrapped the werewolf up in his warmest, most secure embrace. The auror turned his own head to press a kiss to the one on his shoulder. If only standing there and holding him could actually protect him from all the ills of the world, he wouldn't let go. "I'll give them my British wand. They wouldn't know the difference, would they?" His 'British' wand was an attempt to assimilate over here, the wands back home had different cores and a different feel to them. The wonderful thing about Remus was that he didn't need to assimilate for the man to like him. Their differences were some of the most wonderful things about the relationship. Like Remus' proclivity to throw tea at all his problems. Gabriel snorted with laughter, grinning for the first time since he darkened the man's door way today. The auror tried to hide the grin by pressing his lips together but it could still be seen in his eyes and his cheeks. "You Brits and your tea. I'll stay for a little while if you'll show me how to make a proper cup?" He knew that this problem was only the start of it so Gabriel figured he was going to need a lot of tea to get Remus through it, might as well learn to make it good and proper for him.

Gabriel wanted to get in trouble for him - said he was worth getting in trouble for. And Gabriel was using what was quickly becoming Remus' new favorite word again - we. It made Remus feel warm all over, combined with the way Gabriel was hugging him close, chasing out all the chill seeping through Remus' body. A hug like that did fix everything, in its own way. Remus had faced the ugly world before and he would face it again and again. Having someone that still wanted to hold him afterward made the fight to keep on slightly more appealing. He didn't feel like giving up nearly as much when he could slip his arms around Gabriel's waist and hold onto a warm, solid piece of the world.
Remus instinctively rolled his head up when he felt Gabriel's lips against his skin, but the man had something to say that was even more generous than his kiss. "Mm, doubtful. The only other person that should know what's in my wand is Ollivander himself. Have you used your other wand lately, though? They can get jealous." Two wizards without a useful wand between them would just make their troubles worse, and Remus felt a sense of outright dread at having Gabriel sacrifice anything more than what he already was for him. He straightened up a bit, staying in Gabriel's arms, and returned a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you. If it doesn't work out, don't worry. I can do most of what I need to get by with my hands. There's nothing in the Act about that." Gabriel's embrace was more than just warm and safe; it was emboldening. His heat spread through Remus and reignited his own fire, the one so easily doused by a lifelong shame but just as easily brought back to life with a little encouragement and support.
And tea. Remus' mind inevitably wandered to tea; it was the only proper way to thank Gabriel right now. Gabriel, never more American than when the topic of tea was brought up, of course found this hilarious. He was absolutely beautiful (even moreso than normal, somehow) when he grinned, so Remus didn't really mind the serious national affront all that much. He even managed to grin back, disengaging himself from around Gabriel only to slip the man's hand in his own and tug him toward the kitchen. "A man after my own heart. We'll even do it the proper proper way. No magic."

The name Ollivander drew his eyebrows together in a curious sort of confusion. It felt familiar but he couldn't pin it down. "Who?" There was the smallest twinges of jealousy that someone would know Remus in a way that he didn't. Wands could be considered a very intimate part of a wizard given it ties them into the magical world, another reason the banning of wands in the hands of lycanthropic wizards was so terribly cruel. His old wand, the one he dubbed his 'American wand' may get jealous but Gabriel definitely did get jealous, though only a little and it was easily brushed aside in favor of the conversation. It was sort of funny that a man able to deftly use magic without a wand knew so much about them.
"She'll be fine." he gently assured the werewolf, touched by the fact that even with everything sitting on Remus' plate at the moment including worries about his own wand that he managed to drum up concern about his. "She's used to spending a few months alone." Ilvermorny didn't allow for students to take their wands home 'til they're of age. "I really should go back to her anyway. " The thing about trying to pretend to be something you're not is nothing would ever feel quite right, wands included. The sycamore instrument performed well enough to suit his needs but it felt like there was untapped potential in the wand that he wasn't capable of accessing. His own wand of several years, though... "My British wand never felt completely right and my American wand'll be happy to get dueling again." Gabriel's wand was ornate, sort of like him. Mother of Pearl in the handle and a core made of Wampus hair, it was like it was made with him in mind. "It'll be fine."
If he said it enough, maybe Gabriel could believe it too. "It'll work out. You should still have your wand, even if you can use your hands." It was such a small way to fight back, he could only do it for Remus and not the countless others who were getting similar visits right about now without the benefit of having a romantic relationship with the messenger to soften the blow. He could do absolutely nothing for them, but small acts of rebellion eventually spurned larger acts of rebellion. Part of him didn't care about the rest, he just wanted to keep Remus safe and happy, the other half was appalled at the state of things. Remus was grinning though, and so was he. That was the important part right now. "Your heart is quite the prize." The werewolf peeled away from his embrace, leaving a little void that was soon filled when the man took his hand. "No magic?" He teased along as he was led towards the kitchen, sounding the part of petulant teenager instead of mid-twenty auror. "That's barbaric."
When they reached the kitchen, Gabriel turned Remus' hand over in his own, running his thumb over the knuckle. "You might have to show me twice, the No-Maj part of my brain's a bit rusty."
