Things were pretty good for Gabriel, but they could be better. Remus and he were doing well despite the doubt that whispered softly in his ear when things were quiet and still. People seemed to be gradually accepting him over at the Auror office, although he wasn't sure if it was because he was working so hard to prove himself or because Remus had a lot of influence with his coworkers but he was glad all the same. One woman wasn't warming up to him, though. She didn't work with him or even on his floor but it sometimes felt like the little dark haired witch was finding reasons to wander down to his part of the Ministry and glare at him. She'd come by to drop off a memo or invite one of the aurors to lunch with her. He knew who she was and what Remus meant to her, he even met her boyfriend in a pub. Nice guy. But no matter what he did, she gave him dirty looks that peered right down past his shell and into the depth of his insecurity. Gabriel had a deep need to be liked and so he worked to get on her good side. Remus thought that cookies would get to her good side. Not the sort you could buy in a store but ones you made with your bare hands. Gabriel was a surprising good cook when he wanted to be, having learned when he was a young latch key kid with busy parents. Unfortunately he also lived the life of busy twenty something and existed primarily on take away and alcohol, leaving him absolutely nothing to bake with. No pans, no sugar, no nothing. It took an early morning trip down to the nearest Tesco for the baking paraphernalia and supplies, towing his favorite partner in crime along with him. By the time the two made it out of the store he had it all, whisks and vanilla extract and sugar. He even picked up an apron although they were clear out of the manly looking one and he had to settle for something floral and pink. Pink went well with the blue in his eyes, so he'd make do. The werewolf and the auror were elbow deep in dough some hours later. If he was going to bake the daft woman some cookies he was going to do it up right. There would be cookies of all kinds, decorated with frosting and sprinkles. He'd ply her with so much sugar that she'd have no choice but to sweeten up to him. The baking party was fun and they added their own extra sweetness in small shows of affection. He was feeling a little extra happy to be spending time with Remus today, something about the domesticity of it all made his heart grow fonder by the minute. When his feelings intensified to the point of being impossible to ignore, the auror abandoned his mixing bowl to join Remus. Gabriel placed his hands on the man's hips and peered over his shoulder. The cookie dough had enough attention from his boyfriend, it was time for him to get some himself. "What kind cookies--sorry, biscuits as you call them, are you making?" Gabriel enjoyed their little differences, as silly as they could be. Remus was all biscuits and hogwash and tea. Honestly, Gabriel would be lying if he said he wasn't surprised that Remus' suggestion wasn't 'invite her to tea' given his proclivity for fixing all the world's problems with a hot cup of the stuff. The blonde slid his hands forward, arms encircling the werewolf's waist to pull him closer. Gabriel nuzzled into his neck, breathing in the man's scent and sneaking a kiss or two. "Do you really think this will work?" Who cared if it did? Holding Remus was one of his favorite things to do. Okay, he cared a little bit. Remus Lupin

Now here was a problem Remus was more than happy to deal with - in the slightest sense that this was actually a problem. The last time Remus was in this flat, he was lying to his boyfriend and plying him with cuddles and kisses to alleviate said boyfriend's suspicions. Now, he was here to bake cookies in an attempt to woo Mali into liking (or at the very least tolerating) Gabriel. Cookies were much more preferable to lies, in Remus' humble opinion.
He still felt guilty, about the lying, but he knew it was for the best. For now. Gabriel made him very happy and Remus was very smitten with what they had together - but it had been so short a time. A buzzy, happy, wonderful time...but there had to be plenty of things they didn't know about each other yet. Right? A secret society was a pretty big secret to spill. Remus felt like he could trust Gabriel, but it wasn't only his call. Not just his secret.
And honestly, Remus liked having Gabriel all to himself. He was fantastic - Remus couldn't really understand why his other Auror friends hadn't warmed up to Gabriel as quickly as he had (the man was so cute, were they blind?) , but in a way he was glad for it. He liked having just Remus and Gabriel, and not the whole bloody Order breathing down their necks. It was maybe a little selfish, and maybe in time he could introduce Gabriel to what he really did most nights - but for now, Remus was content to bake cookies in blissful ignorance.
The cuddles were especially good in blissful ignorance, too. Gabriel seemed extra happy today, which was good for Remus, because he was starting to notice that with the blonde's high emotions came extra cuddles. Remus was hard at work separating out balls of dough when he felt hands slide over his hips. Gabriel's voice near his ear made him shiver, and Remus had to rework the ball of dough in his hand from squishing it between his fingers. "Listen to you, you're catching on." Remus turned his head just slightly so Gabriel could catch the corner of his grin. "Chocolate chip. Want some?" Remus scooped a bit of cookie dough onto his finger and held it over his shoulder for Gabriel.
Gabriel didn't seem all that interested in Remus' cookies, though. Remus dropped the act, too, dropping another dough ball and making a contented noise as Gabriel pulled him in and wrapped him up, kissing his neck. If only Mali saw the conditions in which her cookies were baked... "If we ever get finished," Remus teased, running his hands over Gabriel's forearms to show he had no intention of being let go right now. Instead, he twisted around in Gabriel's arms so he was facing him, and smoothed out the man's pretty pink apron before leaving his hands to rest on his chest. "I really, honestly think it will. She's a dessert fiend." He tilted his head and considered Gabriel for a moment. "She really is sweet. Just sort of...strong-willed. Funnily enough, she hated my guts too, when we first met." Remus bit at his lip. He wondered if Gabriel would fall for his 'potion accident' excuse...

Domestic moments with Remus were some of his favorites. It was a simple, easy distraction from the doubt and suspicion that loomed over the couple. Gabriel grinned at his effect on Remus, making the man shiver and sabotage his own work. "Mm. So what do you call actual biscuits, then? Sounds like it would make breakfast confusing." He could practically forget that there was something off about Remus when there was cookie dough to taste from his finger. "Fitting. Tasty too." A man who was into classics and old things picked the most classic cookie of them all, a universal favorite. It was sure to woo the small but terrifying woman right off her feet. At the very least it should keep her dirty looks at bay for a little while.
They were certainly not going to get finished like this, snuggling and distracting each other from the task at hand. "I guess you'll just have to stay over then. We'll be baking all night long." Or pretending to bake, unable to keep their hands off of each other. The werewolf turned around so they were facing each other and his heart could beat right out of his chest with Remus' hands resting on it. He wasn't so insecure to think the woman hated him and on some level he even understood it. The man in his arms was important to her and she worried about him. He worried about him too, facing all that he had to face. The world wasn't very kind to werewolves right now, but it didn't sound like it ever had been and Remus was tough. He could handle it. "I'm sure she is." He was a little worried about earning the woman's favor but the real question was, how did he even manage to earn Remus' affection? They were two very different people and he was bursting with admiration for Remus, the man was definitely out of his league. Sure, he had a charming smile and cheek bones to die for but Remus had wisdom and sophisticated wit. Out of league was an understatement, really. The two men weren't even playing the same game.
"Really? I find that very hard to believe." He asked with genuine bewilderment that was complicated by a spike in that damn suspicion. Remus bit his lip and Gabriel stole a kiss from those bitten lips, resting his forehead against his. The auror peeled his arms away from the werewolf's waist so he could take his face in his hands, thumb stroking along one of the scars on his cheek. "How could anyone not like you?" He could forget all about the cookies he was baking, they slipped out of his mind as easily as the suspicion did and were replaced by much more pleasant thoughts about Remus' warmth or how well they seemed to fit together. They would really never get done if they keep this up, though. He looked past Remus to the neglected cookie dough. "Should we get them in the oven?"

"These are actual biscuits," Remus said, quiet and gentle because he knew Gabriel still seemed a little insecure about not fitting in fully to his new homeland. It was Remus' job to make him feel at home, and it was a responsibility he took on gladly. "What's a biscuit to your lot?" Remus was just as ignorant of the food culture across the pond, really. "You don't eat biscuits for breakfast. Tea, maybe." Or right in the middle of making them, even. Gabriel accepted his offer of chocolate chip dough and Remus smiled. "I told you, getting the good chocolate would make all the difference." Remus took his chocolate very seriously. If he was going to eat half the bag of chocolate chips while baking, it had to be the good stuff. And he supposed actually having the good stuff in the biscuits themselves was pretty important, too.
As enamored as he was with chocolate, even it was pretty easy to forget once Gabriel had his hands on him. And threatened him with such tempting things, right against his ear. Remus couldn't take it anymore and had to turn around for the full experience, the sound and touch and smell and sight of Gabriel. "What a cruel fate. We might be baking forever." Forever with Gabriel sounded very good, especially if it was all made up of moments like these. Moments like these made all the rest of it easier, from the war and terror they both faced in the world, down to little things like Mali's wrath. "She'll come around. Promise. Especially once she sees how happy you make me."
Gabriel actually looked shocked to hear that Mali didn't initially like Remus, either. Remus tilted his head at the blonde, caught a bit off-guard. Was it really that hard to believe? Remus certainly didn't look like the most trustworthy character, if you knew nothing else about him except his scars and eternally mussed look. In fact...thinking back on it now, the day he officially met Gabriel, he didn't remember any sort of hesitation or suspicion on the Auror's face. Maybe Remus' smiling face in the picture Gabriel had been looking at for so long had something to do with that, he thought. It certainly earned him favors now, his smile. Gabriel kissed him and Remus sighed happily into it, his hands falling down to Gabriel's hips as the blonde's moved up to Remus' face. He laughed, love drunk, at Gabriel's question, drinking in all the wonderful features suddenly so very close to his. "I can be a bit of a difficult patient, I think, when I'm hurting. She used to work at the hospital, you know. She healed me. She's a natural helper, she loves people - sometimes you just have to give her time to work you out."
He supposed they did have to pay some sort of attention to the baking, or drop this charade all together and get out of the kitchen. He glanced over his shoulder at the dough balls, mostly perfect and ready to go. "I suppose. What's next? More chocolate chip?" Remus turned his head back around and nodded over Gabriel's shoulder at the mixing bowl he had so wantonly abandoned.

"These" Gabriel started, faithful to his native version of the food in question. "Are cookies." Try as he might, Gabriel still had difficulty with the local vernacular. He was only being playfully persnickety in regards to calling a snickerdoodle a biscuit but Remus' question threw him momentarily off. "My what?" His light colored eyebrows knit in confusion 'til it clicked a half a beat later. "Oh, biscuits are sort of like a softer scone, eaten with jam or honey or something along those lines." Who was Remus trying to fool stating he wouldn't eat cookies for breakfast? Gabriel grinned into Remus' shoulder. It was just another adorable personality trait and he loved every single thing about Remus, from his sweet tooth to his cute but confusing Britishisms. "And knowing you and your sweet tooth I wouldn't put it past you to eat your version of biscuits for breakfast." A man who took his chocolate so seriously wasn't going to banish a sweet to a certain time of the day.
Baking cookies quickly became the last thing on his mind when the werewolf turned around to face him. Gabriel found it difficult to be concerned with the opinion of a silly young girl when he had someone as wonderful as Remus to distract him and steal away his attention. They joked about spending the night together but he wouldn't mind if Remus never left. They could stand in this very spot in his kitchen and wrapped up in warmth for hours and Gabriel would be beyond content. "That doesn't sound so terrible." Gabriel mused lightly. He pulled his arms from around Remus' waist just enough to tuck his hands into the werewolf's back pockets before adding, "Although I could think of a few better things to do to occupy our time." Talking about said silly young woman was not what he had in mind, but his deeply seated need to be liked poked through, tapped him on his shoulder and reminded him that he did really care. Remus was confident that he could win her favor, that she wasn't quite as mean as she was projecting but the blonde latched on to the last sentence because it made something in his chest buzz pleasantly. He made Remus happy and that only deepened the cuddly, affectionate mood he was in. "You make me happy too."
So happy that he really didn't believe that anyone could ever not like Remus. His explanations had a funny way of driving up his suspicion but things like the hum of Remus' sigh against his lips and the secure, comfortable feeling of the man's arms around his waste smothered that suspicion and it shriveled and died before he could acknowledge it. "Mm. It sounds like she's wasted at the Ministry, then." Why would a talented Healer work for such an oppressive, soul destroying regime? A question better left for when he wasn't intoxicated off of Remus' affection. Gabriel dropped his hands back down, one arm curling around Remus' waist because it felt like it belonged there, and he reluctantly peeled himself away from the werewolf. He didn't go far, just enough to look back at the lone mixing bowl, but the loss of the man's warmth against him felt like he was plunging into cold water. "I don't know. If we use all the chocolate chips what will we put in the pancakes tomorrow morning? I mean, since we'll be baking all night.."

In all truthfulness, 'cookie' was a more accurate and practical word for what they were currently making (only to be made more practical if they were called bake-ies, of some sort)...but Remus wasn't sure there was ever a time the British were concerned with being especially accurate or practical. He was happy to leave that to the handsome Americans while he continued to charm one particular handsome American with his British quirkiness. Remus only smiled at Gabriel's confusion, running a finger over the man's knuckles and waiting. Gabriel was clever and Remus had yet to see him truly stumped over anything - just another irresistible thing about the man to add to an ever-growing list. Remus loved a big brain. "Do you know how to make them?" Remus asked. He may as well get used to American cuisine - he had no intention of letting Gabriel go, even if they'd only known each other for a short while Remus recognized how strongly he felt for the man - and a biscuit didn't really sound half bad.
Remus could feel Gabriel smiling against him, and that wasn't half bad, either. "Only sometimes," Remus said, grinning, as he turned around to face Gabriel. His sweet tooth only demanded early morning chocolate three, four times a week maximum...but Gabriel, he could indulge in all day. Had to. Remus pressed in closer under the man's touch, always eager for more of him. "Ah, little do you know, 'baking' just might be an indecent British euphemism," Remus teased from somewhere close to Gabriel's left ear. He was quickly forgetting cookies and biscuits and the reason they were in this kitchen to begin with, Gabriel making it exceptionally easy to forget everything else but him. Remus moved his head a little so he could look at him properly again, bumping his nose against Gabriel's and smiling. "Good." That tiny worry always lurked within Remus, that things were too good to be true, but it was hard not to believe Gabriel when he said he made him happy, too, mixed in with all the affection he was currently showing.
And the kiss - that kiss. There was no lie behind that kiss, from either of them. Remus could relax, completely content, in this moment. Comfortable, they were able to somewhat move back to the task at hand - or at least the subject of the task, as their hands were still a bit too occupied with one another. "Oh, she's on at the school, too. Healing. She keeps busy." That was for certain. Nothing about Mali's time was wasted - she might be astonished, actually, at how much time Remus and Gabriel were dithering away in the kitchen...but she had her distractions, too.
Suddenly, Gabriel wasn't right in front of him before, and his absence was almost a shock. He hadn't gone far at all, though, and Remus turned instinctively with him, one hand running back up his chest. He said exactly what Remus wanted to hear, leaving him grinning like a fool. "A man after my own heart," he said, tapping the spot where Gabriel's heart was. "You're absolutely right. We'll need the sugar rush, after a long night of baking. Ah...perhaps, sugar cookies next, then?"
