Gabriel was on the verge of doing something very stupid for the past few days. Remus had been brutally attacked within the walls of Azkaban, making it very clear that he needed to make good on the promise he uttered out of pure devastation. He needed to get the man out. At first the stupid thing was going to be making those guards regret what they did, but then the very stupid thing was going to be smuggling Remus out of Azkaban. It would have definitely ended his career and likely his own freedom, but thankfully the prisoners were all released pending trial. It was an unforeseen move on the Minister's part, likely trying to placate a growing unrest. A lot of people didn't buy the Ministry's spin on things, weary of the last time the Ministry and the Prophet tried to paint Potter as a mad man.
Not a criminal himself (for now), Gabriel was trying to get Remus settled in back at home. It wouldn't be wise to visit him often and honestly things were still very strained, but he allowed himself to be present today. The Auror had even brought along several vials of potion to help mitigate the pain of fractured hands that were unable to be healed. It was a barbaric way to control Remus' use of wandless magic. The pair of them were sitting at the kitchen table, early on the morning of Remus' release. The children were to be returned later, when the sun was fully up but for now there were things to make absolutely clear. "You need to be very careful, Remus." he reminded the man, gently holding one of the brutalized hands in his own. The inability to do anything about what had been done to him left a deep achy feeling in his chest. "You have to follow the rules of your house arrest right down to the letter, if you give the Minister any reason to act against you she will without hesitation."
He hated that woman, not just for what she did to Remus but for what she was doing to him as well. He was turned into a pawn to carry out her sick, twisted agenda. She was making a mockery of the auror department, using them for her personal vendettas. Her corruption was spreading through the Ministry like a cancer and paired with the whole 'Order of the Phoenix' business it didn't leave very many people for Gabriel to trust and that felt very lonely. "You can't take one step out of your house, don't even put a toe out into the garden. You're not allowed magic, even if your hands manage to heal." He lightly traced a small circle over the back of the man's hand with his thumb. His poor, poor hands. "I wouldn't even allow anyone to use it around you, who knows who she'll have watching."
Enough doom and gloom. The day one gets out of wizarding prison should be a happy one, full of high notes and reunions. "Anyway, are you hungry?" Gabriel asked, carefully bringing the hand up to press the gentlest of kisses to it. "I'll cook you breakfast. Pancakes?"

Remus thought transforming without any Wolfsbane was the worst possible thing that could happen to him in prison...until he accidentally used magic to defend himself, and they broke his hands for it. At least with the werewolf wounds, he only suffered their aftermath, never remembering the actual moment he inflicted them upon himself. He was there for every painful second they smashed his hands and fingers up. He even had to watch. With so many bones, they would take months to heal completely, and they'd made sure it had to be done the old-fashioned way, too. No magic.
Getting out of prison was his consolation prize after that, he supposed. He didn't want to say nothing worse than that could possibly happen to him now...but he'd already made that mistake. He was just grateful to get out alive and in one piece - shattered and bruised, but still one piece. And, he was grateful for Gabriel. He still had Gabriel. Remus figured he had probably ruined their relationship but the man still showed up every time Remus needed him. Whether it was through loyalty to Remus or to his job, Remus didn't really know, he was just happy the man was there and he soaked up every remaining minute he had with him.
Luckily, Remus was going to have plenty of time to figure out how to win Gabriel back. Remus wasn't all that excited about the prospect of his beloved home becoming his own personal prison now, but it was certainly more attractive than the alternative. As long as he was a good boy, no one would try to break his hands here, probably, and someone would probably bring him Wolfsbane. Plus, he got his kids back. Remus worried himself sick with the idea that they were going to be taken away permanently. If he was going to be good for anybody, it would be for them.
Because Remus didn't want to be good. He glowered at his kitchen table as he sat there with Gabriel, listening to his words with reluctant acceptance. Remus wanted to fight and he wanted to try twice as hard to expose the Ministry for what it really was - but now was most certainly not the time. Remus sighed and dropped the sullen expression once he looked up at Gabriel, revealing the exhaustion in his face. "And what are the rules for you? I'm sure she gave you rules." The Minister was going to try to keep people away from Remus, he knew it. He didn't know how much Gabriel even wanted to see him again, but it would hurt less thinking he had to stay away because of her.
Remus melted into Gabriel's touch, slouching in his chair. "I know," he nodded. "I know how it goes. I'll be good, I promise." Remus tried to stuff his words to the brim with sincerity. He wondered if Gabriel would ever believe anything he said ever again. "I'm not going to let everything you've done for me be in vain. I promise. I'll do this right." Gabriel switched his tune then, suddenly, and it made Remus smile. He got a kiss out of it, too - a couple more thousand of those, and his hands would be good as new. Remus just had to keep him around that long. "Starving," he nodded, and then he stood up. "I...can't really help." He glanced down at his hands. "I give pretty good directions, though. Pans are down there," he pointed to a cabinet next to the oven and smiled at Gabriel.

Sometimes it was easy to forget the distrust and anger that had festered in the rift Remus' secret had created. The Minister, for all her faults and sick motivations, was unknowingly strengthening their relationship and making it easier to forgive the poor, battered werewolf. Anger felt inappropriate when he was being so horribly oppressed and mistreated. It invoked Gabriel's protective streak and drew them closer. Once all was said and done, he would begin to process his feelings and they would take two steps back but for now, he shoved them off in the back of his mind. The same ability to shut down his emotions made it exceedingly easy to manage them, ignore one feeling in favor of another.
He wanted to heal the hands himself, Merlin help him and it was a struggle to resist. Healing wasn't even something he was good at, but the broken things were so pitiful. Remus couldn't even hold his hands back. It was easy to understand why Remus glowered, but he didn't like it. It wasn't a facial expression that suited the werewolf's face. Gabriel liked how it could be soft and hard at the same time, but right now it was all cold, rough edges. When Remus asked him about his own rules the auror sighed. "She doesn't make rules for me, I've done nothing wrong." Besides illegally healing a bleeding, dying werewolf and helping him keep a wand. Maybe it was easier than he thought to understand Remus' intentions. Love made people do things they never dreamed of doing. But what was love when it was tainted by secrets?
Gabriel hesitated for a moment, running a free hand through his hair. "Although..." The auror started cautiously. "I do think it's a good idea to keep visitation down to a minimum. I feel that maybe I should only stop in if I have a verifiable reason to." It wouldn't help either of them now to lose his position at the Ministry. He was in the best position to look out for Remus, they both had to know that. Given their rockiness, space felt like the last thing they needed but they couldn't go about this emotionally. They had to use logic. "But we can write---" the suggestion died on his lips and his gaze trailed down to Remus' ruined hands. Hands that wouldn't be holding a quill for a long time. He stroked his thumb regretfully over the fractured knuckles, promising "I'll think of something."
Sympathy poked painfully at his heart over how resigned and defeated he sounded, assuring that he would behave. "It's not about me and what I did at all. I don't care if everything I did was useless..." He would do it all over again, too. "This is about keeping you out of trouble. For your own sake, please don't push the Ministry's boundaries. They'll be even less forgiving if you provoke them." Who was he to tell someone about the Ministry? Someone who'd lived through several Minister's instead of his few months of a terrible one? Gabriel could feel his anger climbing and had to change gears, or the first of what would be precious few precious post Azkaban meetings would be ruined. He stood up when Remus did, making his way around the table.
Pancakes were life's answer to most things. "No, it's alright." Gabriel said, guiding the pointing hand back down and urging Remus into his chair. "I'm surprisingly good at figuring out my way around people's kitchens. You rest. Although I do find your lack of flowery aprons disappointing." He placed his own hand on the man's shoulder to give it an affectionate squeeze. He could feel new scars through the man's shirt and that made him frown. Gabriel leaned down to press his lips against Remus' battle scarred cheek in an effort to distract himself from the new wounds. The scars felt unfamiliar there too.

"That's true," Remus agreed immediately, even though that's not exactly what he meant by rules for Gabriel. Remus just assumed there had to be some sort of rule set down about visitors, especially...special visitors, and even more so for special visitors that happened to also work for the Ministry. Though, now that he thought about he supposed that was pretty much just Gabriel. And the Minister didn't make rules for him. Because he'd done nothing wrong. Remus was glad to hear Gabriel say it, that he believed it, so Remus didn't have to tell him a thousand times. He wasn't mad at Gabriel, and he didn't blame him for anything he'd done. Not like he even had a reason to be mad at the man - Remus was the obvious jerk in this situation, and that was saying something when your boyfriend came to the door to arrest you. Gabriel was just doing his best by Remus, trying to protect him, even after Remus betrayed him terribly. Gabriel had done nothing wrong.
And Gabriel had no rules - not ones set by the Ministry, anyway. But he was setting them himself. When he announced he wouldn't be coming by as much, Remus made a humming noise in his throat, and then cleared it. He looked at Gabriel, too exhausted to hide the hurt in his eyes. He didn't need to hide it, anyway. No more secrets. "That sucks. But I understand." Seeing Gabriel was one of the few things over the past few days that gave Remus peace, and he didn't think he would fare well without it. But he did understand - if he wanted a chance of ever seeing Gabriel again, period, they had to both be careful. Gabriel suggested writing and Remus almost laughed, but as it crawled up his throat it turned into more of a sob so he stifled it. "Yeah. We always do." He watched Gabriel's fingers running over his. We. He hadn't got to use that word as much as he liked lately. He looked back up at Gabriel, wondering if he was still allowed to use it.
Whatever was happening between them, Remus knew something was still there. He felt it so strongly that he simply couldn't imagine, or bear, the thought of Gabriel no longer feeling the same way. Remus had hurt Gabriel, badly and perhaps irreversibly...but you could still love someone that hurt you, right? Why would Gabriel be doing all these things for him if he didn't still love him? Remus wanted so badly to just ask but he knew they weren't there yet. "I know, I promise, I know. I don't want to make anything worse, either. But I do care - about what you've done for me. To me it is largely about that. I know I fucked up Gabriel, and we don't have to talk about it right now, but I'm going to make it right." Gabriel looked like he was getting a little worked up and Remus felt it, too, so he dropped his intense gaze and let the grumbling in his stomach take over his mind.
Pancakes, yes. Gabriel was up with him and then putting him right back in his chair. He wanted to do things for Remus, and while Remus would have preferred him wanting to do things with him, he could work with this. As long as Gabriel was still there, in the house with him. He was pretty bloody tired, anyway. Remus watched Gabriel and played home movies in his mind, trying to remember every moment he'd spent with the man and siphoning up all the happy feelings he could muster. If this was going to be his last time seeing Gabriel for a while, he needed to make the most of it. "That would make you a good Hufflepuff," Remus smiled lightly. "And you're very helpful. And loyal." Remus seemed to have earned himself from physical contact from the man and he relished in it. Gabriel was frowning, though. Working with such limited resources on his end, reversing that frown would be difficult, but he had to do it. This had to be a happy moment for Gabriel, too. Remus lifted his hands and ever so lightly ran them over the front of Gabriel's shirt, smoothing it down. He looked up at Gabriel with a hint of old mischief in his eye. "Mm, me too." He grinned then. "I think LJ's got one, I'm sure she wouldn't mind you borrowing it."

That's true. Of course it was. Gabriel wanted to be patient and understanding but he had his own unresolved feelings bubbling up in little flares of annoyance. He wanted to be patient and understanding. He wanted to be kind, but Gabriel still felt betrayed by Remus. It was something that could only be ignored for so long before it would rear it's ugly head. He tensed his jaw and bit his tongue to keep a sarcastic remark off of it. The auror fully believe that he had done nothing wrong. Not in arresting him, not in saving him either. Sometimes he felt like he was floundering through the whole thing, blindly unsure of when he could feel what he felt and when to clamp it down in favor of seeing Remus through it all. Did Remus even deserve the loyalty he was given? Deep deep down, Gabriel understood the secret he kept. The ripple effect from telling the wrong person had proven devastating for his whole organization but Merlin, it hurt not to be trusted. He simply nodded along. Yes, that was true.
The humming noise grinded against his nerves for some unknown reason. How inconvenient for you that it sucks Gabriel averted his eyes away from Remus, the look in the werewolf's own made him uncomfortable. Despite the biting remark in his head he nodded and looked down at their hand together. His poor scarred hands and fractured fingers contrasted sharply against his own. Gabriel's hands were soft, well cared for and free of injury. "Thank you for understanding." The word 'We' made him grimace, jaw tight. Were they a 'We'? Secrets weren't kept between 'we's' and yet, Remus kept a huge secret from him. The last time Gabriel freely used it he was reassuring Remus that they'd fight back against the Ministry's effort to strip him of magic, but the Ministry won, didn't they? The proof was in the horrifically broken hands.
Fucked up didn't even begin to describe what happened between them. "The time to 'make it right' is long gone." He would allow himself to indulge in his own feelings, just a little. "You could have been honest with me, or at least acknowledged that you had something that you couldn't tell me." Would he have understood then or pressed it? Gabriel liked to think that he would have responded rationally but they would never truly know. "That would have 'made it right' but it's too late." The blonde wizard was being constantly torn in two different directions and the effect was dizzying. It made him feel sick, something he softened by grazing his thumb over Remus' broken hands. It reminded him who the real enemy was. "We can move past it." We, him and Remus. "But it will always be wrong."
Pancakes were never wrong, though. He'd make them (and they would be tasty, too.) and they could forget all about the strife for a little while. They could forget about the fact that Remus couldn't write, or that he was still a prisoner. The comment about Hufflepuff's confused him. Tragic that honesty wasn't a Gryffindor quality he thought bitterly, but raised his eyebrows and asked "Are Hufflepuffs unusually fond of pancakes or something?" Touching helped to cool his temper and soften him up. He caught Remus' hand and held it against his chest, right over his heart. The mental image of him in Lily James' apron made him grin and shake his head. "I'm sure she wouldn't." His children were wonderful, really. A man who could raise two kids like that couldn't be bad, despite past mistakes. "But I'm not sure it would fit. Somehow i'll survive these flower-less conditions... As long as you have actual flour?"

Remus knew he was saying all the wrong things. Every word that slipped out of him flipped his gut in uneasiness. He knew the best thing that he could say right now was nothing at all, that Gabriel needed time. The blonde just looked so unbearably tense and uncomfortable in his presence that Remus couldn't stand it. He was supposed to be the one that worked that tension away, that returned Gabriel to their cozy and comfortable fascination with one another whenever work or something else got to him. But Remus was Gabriel's work now, in some manner. Gabriel had to treat Remus like any other citizen involved with the wrong end of the Auror department, and Remus trying to force the tattered shreds of their personal relationship into that already complex situation didn't help either of them, personally or professionally.
Remus was just so terrified that Gabriel wouldn't come back at all. His physical presence right now prompted Remus to feel compulsive in his need to fix things. But he just couldn't get the right words out, apparently, his attempts short and fragmented and Gabriel's responses even shorter. Remus forced himself to hush, the attempt petering out in a quiet sigh as they sat silently and watched their hands together. He tried to convince himself that he should be happy he was still allowed to touch, but that wasn't all there was to Gabriel. Not at all. Remus liked talking to him, had grown accustomed to their conversations both deep and silly. He let himself find a sense of normalcy in it. And now Gabriel wouldn't be coming by very much, if at all.
Suddenly, Gabriel was talking. A lot. Remus spoke his piece like a eulogy, not expecting anything back right now, or maybe ever. Maybe Gabriel would never forgive him. Something Remus said prompted Gabriel to finally talk, and it certainly sounded like it was going that way. Remus lifted his head and watched his mouth with sad eyes. He wasn't going to get a chance to make it right. He didn't really deserve one anyway, he knew that, but the finality in Gabriel's voice was nonetheless heartbreaking. And then utterly confusing, as he threw Remus' favorite word in there. We. Remus blinked and moved his gaze up to Gabriel's eyes, soulful and expressive as they were, looking for more. "Okay, yes. I understand." Remus still wasn't doing too good with the whole words thing. His heart was beating very fast, renewed with hope. "As long as you're open to giving me another chance." His voice turned that into a question.
Remus was a strange mixture of devastation and excitement now, and pancakes just added to the surreal nature of the morning. He just went with it. His eyes followed Gabriel's every moment. "Hufflepuffs are fond of all food," he said with a distracted smile. "And they're very good at finding things." Remus happily held his captured hand over Gabriel's heart, its steady beat pounding in his own pulse when Gabriel grinned at him. "I do...think you can find it?" He tilted his head at the blonde, grinning. "I'm really excited to watch you try to find where I hide the chocolate chips." Don't think for a second that Remus Lupin will eat a pancake without chocolate chips in it. And don't think for another second he didn't have to hide the bag of them from his equally as sweet-toothed children.

Hums and sighs. There were so many things left unspoken and unfelt between them that everything felt wrong. Every sound from Remus grated hard against his nerves and the tension only climbed higher. Gabriel was well aware that there was an elephant in the room but he did nothing as the weight of the creature crushed the both of them, making him complicit in the mess that their whirlwind relationship had become in an even shorter time. There were very very brief moments in time where he wasn't sure that he wanted to fix anything, that it would be worth the effort that it took to repair things but the moments were gone as quick as they came up. Remus always managed to draw him in and make him want to forget and forgive every sin.
His eyes did the auror in every single time. They were easy to get lost in and dangerously expressive, allowing Gabriel to feel Remus' pain as if it was his own. They were both hurting but in different ways. Gabriel took the first step towards cleaning out the festering wound the werewolf's dishonesty had left. It was such a small step but it was agonizing. The words tasted bitter as he spoke them because he could see Remus breaking through those beautifully soft eyes. It broke him, too. The words felt resolute and final, but they weren't. Gabriel gave a single nod of his pretty blonde head in response to the question, murmuring another "Thank you for understanding." His walls were down and the auror felt raw and out of his element, rendering him desperate to move on and change the subject. He grasped at straws, finding some levity with the promise of pancakes but the change in climate felt surreal and dizzying.
Remus' smile, however distracted, gave him a piece of solid ground to stand on and get his bearings, allowing the dizzy feeling to settle. "I don't remember that in any description of the Hogwarts Houses." Food and finding things... While he always considered himself a bit of an honorary Gryffindor he could certainly get behind the ideology of the Hufflepuff house. Remus' hand over his own heart brought a thrill of pleasant and familiar warmth. "I suppose I can, if I'm as one with the Hufflepuffs as you say." He was a clever beast, at least. Reluctantly the auror moved towards the rest of the kitchen and away from Remus. He observed the room thoughtfully for a moment, with the professional eye of an investigator. "You've got children, so I'm guessing the chocolate is going to be hiding on one of the higher shelves. You're lucky I'm not hypocritical enough to violate my own rules or else I'd just rain on your little parade with a summoning charm."

And so it was done. Whatever this new phase in their relationship was, Gabriel set it in stone with a curt nod and a short phrase. Minimal visits and only with official reasons, no real way of talking to each other, no talking at all about the one thing they needed to talk about until Gabriel was ready...Remus still had so many questions, but he knew better than to ask them. He was about to have quite a bit of free time on his hands, so maybe that's how he would keep himself occupied - thinking up a thousand different answers to every question he had about Gabriel, their relationship, and himself. Right now, while Gabriel was still here, Remus would enjoy the time he got with the man.
"Well, I'm your inside man. Here to give you the real, dirty truth." Talking about Hogwarts was as natural as breathing, so that was a good place to start as any. And teasing Gabriel, of course. That came easy, too, the two of them always able to play off of each other no matter what else may be standing in the room. "And as a terribly mischievous Gryffindor, I'm not going to give you one hint." Remus pressed his growing smile into a tight line and zipped his lips, eyes dancing at Gabriel. He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms like he was settling in the for the show. He had offered Gabriel a challenge, and the blonde took it without hesitation - find the chocolate. He...guessed right almost immediately, dammit. Of course he did. Gabriel tracked down things far more nefarious and elusive than chocolate chips everyday. Remus rolled his eyes and tried very hard to remain tight lipped - and failed. He grinned and said, "Oh, you don't even need the magic. I think you're too clever for this game, it's not fair." He considered the blonde for a long moment as he worked, enjoying the view. "Care for another challenge? Surprise me. Secret ingredient. Tell me when to close my eyes." Remus didn't think he was going to find anything Gabriel wasn't good at, but the silence bothered him and any conversation they might have right now was going to feel stilted and awkward. Playfulness it was, then. Gabriel sort of brought that out of him anyway.

The rules that Gabriel set down would be miserable for both of them. Space was the last thing they truly needed, it would allow the wounds to their relationship to fester and rot but they didn't have a choice. Gabriel had to walk a very careful line between his professional and personal life and getting removed from his position would benefit no one. Besides, he had little experience in this sort of thing. In the past, he would just bail on relationships that took this kind of hit but he never had someone he craved like Remus. Smart, kind, strong and funny. Gabriel couldn't abandon this relationship, especially when Remus truly was his man.
There were more sarcastic snarks brewing in his head. Real dirty truth. Could he believe that, even in jest? Those remarks were swatted back from his tongue, banished to lurk in the far corners of his mind where they couldn't poison breakfast. "Terribly mischievous?" he asked with an arched eyebrow and a smug, restrained grin. "I don't believe you were ever mischievous. What kind of mischief could you possibly manage to get into? Returning books late to the library?" Weeks ago he thought that would be the absolute worst thing that Remus was capable of, returning books late. Maybe some jaywalking or in his younger, wilder days.. littering. Now, he wasn't sure. Gabriel managed to retrieve the bag of chocolate chips once the older man confirmed his hunch, they would be in one of the higher cabinets. "All's fair in love and pancakes." he remarked as he waved the easily found bag tauntingly at the man. The word had slipped in there so easily and felt so natural that he could almost forget that it had been a good long while since he'd used it around Remus.
The werewolf had another game for him and that one was very interesting. "Alright, I'm game." The auror turned breakfast chef set to work, making the pancakes and mulling over his secret ingredient. Bacon would be a very American addition, you could pry the stuff out of the yank's cold, greasy and dead hands but it would be a very easy guess from the sound of it cooking and the scent. Besides, Remus had an enormous sweet tooth and bacon didn't go so well with chocolate. "Alright." He settled on his ingredient and turned to lean against the kitchen counter, folding his arms over his chest. "You're about to put an awful lot of blind trust in me." Trust was another buzz word and there was an uncomfortable pang in his chest that he ignored in favor of their game. "Literally. Close your eyes and I'll tell you when you can open them again. No cheating." When Remus complied he went back to work. Soon he returned to Remus with a plate full of secret ingredient pancakes. "No opening your eyes yet. I'm adding a rule to the game, you've got to eat them without looking." He set the plate down on the table and pulled over a chair. The wizard leaned over to whisper breathily in Remus' ear. "I'll play nice and give you a hint."
Gabriel plucked something from the top of the pancakes. "The Spanish word for it is 'fresa'" He ran a slice of strawberry over Remus' lips. There was something that felt very intimate about feeding another person. It was an act of trust and affection, things he craved from Remus but couldn't let himself have the past few weeks. He shouldn't be treading into such dangerous territory but Gabriel was vulnerable and needy, Remus would have a terrible time with his hands, anyway. This was sparing him the frustration of his broken hands, one of which Gabriel took gently in his free one because he missed how their hands felt together. "Care to hazard a guess?" It wasn't quite the same, he had to watch how he held it but he liked it. Sort of like how their relationship would be in the end.. Not quite the same but still good.

Gabriel didn't believe he was mischievous. Ever! Remus' mouth hung open with mock affront, and a little bit of real affront. Returning books late to the library...as if. That was one thing would Remus would never do, no matter how mischievous he was feeling - that was just uncivil. Gabriel's phrasing pricked at Remus' ears, though, and it made him giggle. Mischief managed, indeed. "Oh, that's only the start of it. Did you know, our library had a restricted section." He waggled his eyebrows at Gabriel for a moment, letting him imagine what mischief little, bookish Remus Lupin got up to in the restricted section of the library.
Remus was finding himself in rather high spirits as the morning got brighter, given his unsavory, looming situation. The kitchen felt like a little bubble where nothing had changed, Gabriel still charming his little cotton socks off like nothing at all dreadful had transpired between them yet in their new, shiny relationship. Remus clung to those high spirits, knowing he would need them later when Gabriel wasn't around. He huffed and threw his arms across his chest (gingerly, because of the hands), grinning all the while, as Gabriel gloated upon his clever chocolate finding skills. And threw the word 'love' in there, for good measure. Remus didn't miss it - it had been so long since he'd heard it from him - and he felt heat creep up his neck as he smiled at Gabriel. "I suppose so."
All was fair in love and pancakes - but also not challenging enough, at least on the pancakes front. Gabriel rose to Remus' challenge brilliantly. He spoke of trust then, too, making Remus' stomach flip over but he kept his smile and kept quiet. He trusted Gabriel with his life and he wanted the man to know it, but he'd done a right shit job of showing it so far, and he didn't want to ruin this happy memory so he kept quiet and nodded. Remus closed his eyes and waited.
Soon, the wonderful aroma of pancakes was wafting up his nostrils from below. He nodded again as Gabriel added a new rule to the game, a grin spreading across his face. And then, Gabriel was right up next to him, whispering in his ear, and Remus nearly melted all the way to the floor - or rather, into Gabriel's lap, where he so badly found himself wanting to be the moment Gabriel's words hit his ear. "You're not playing nice," he breathed back. His first taste of the man's affection in weeks let him know how desperately he was starving for it, and Remus had to hook his feet around his chair to stop himself from doing anything rash.
Because it wasn't that easy anymore. They could afford this moment of early morning playfulness but not much beyond it, because now, they had so little to spend. Remus was going to have to fill a Gabriel-sized hole in his heart with pancakes. And...strawberries. He missed completely what Gabriel said for his hint, distracted as he was by the closeness and the whispering and the - oh, dear Merlin, Gabriel was going to feed him. Remus was almost grinning too much to eat the strawberry, but he got it down eventually, and then anchored himself to Gabriel's hand as best as he could as he opened his eyes. Looking at him was going to be too much, he knew it, but he was going to need to do as much of that possible now as well, while he still had the chance. "Hmm. I'm almost sure, but I think I need another," he grinned cheekily at the blonde, cocking his head.
