Gabriel had promised Remus he would think of something, some way that they could communicate or see each other. Remus was a special man, capable of inspiring unkeepable promises and then motivating him to actually find a way to keep them. His role in Remus' investigation had dropped significantly since the man was returned home, likely the Ministry's way of punishing them both. The Auror looked for any reason to pop over to the werewolf's residence. Questions that needed to be asked or something but nothing came. Any questioning was handled by a different Auror while he got stuck with interrogating Ron Weasley (he barely managed to contain his hero worship) and a very dreamy but surprisingly frustrating blonde who liked to talk in questions and riddles but no Remus.
The distance started to make him desperate and the desperation helped him work out a plan to visit the werewolf. It took a disillusionment charm and some careful apparating, but Gabriel managed to appear on Remus' door step a few hours before midnight. His arrival was announced by a pop so faint that one was likely to miss it if they weren't listening for it. It wasn't a perfect plan by any means, there were risks but he blended in pretty well with his surroundings thanks to the charm and if anyone was watching and noticed, he would have a chance to get away with his identity intact should they come to investigate. He knocked softly but persistently on the door. Eventually the old werewolf was drawn to the sound and Gabriel slipped past with a murmured greeting and a brushing of his fingers over the man's stomach.
Once the door was firmly shut he reversed the enchantment, leaving the auror fully visible and grinning at a bewildered werewolf. He ran a hand through his hair, ruffling his blonde locks to get them to fall just right. "Told you I'd think of something, didn't I?" It wasn't a brilliant 'something' but it had gone smoothly so far. He had missed Remus terribly. They still had a bumpy road ahead of them, Remus was going to have to earn back a trust that was freely given before but it was helped along by the fact the Ministry made him a victim of their terrible regime and invoked Gabriel's protective side. For now, he was just pleased to be near him and to see that he was whole and surviving, so much so that he pulled the man into his arms and held him close in a hug.
It felt so good to be able to touch Remus that he could almost forget that their relationship had been damaged by deception. It was easy to ignore it in favor of learning the new scars that decorated his face when he pulled away to take said face in his hands, stroking his thumb over his cheek. "I've missed you. Are you doing alright? I was hoping to stay the night with you, if that's alright? It'll be our secret."

Remus was doing his very best not to let his home become his prison. Technically, it was, because he couldn't leave it...but it didn't have to feel that way. He (and Dora) had spent so long getting everything just right in this place, and those comforts were most certainly not going to waste now. He spent most of his time in the room he found most comfortable, his study, constantly reminding himself that this is probably what he would be doing anyway even if he were the freest man on Earth. He kept himself busy - or rather, the twins kept him busy and whenever he had a quiet moment to himself he stayed busy then, too - but stayed far away from anything related to the Order for the time being. Gabriel's warning resonated with him for more than one reason. He was not going to fuck this up.
He mostly worked on school things. Whether he would even be able to return to that job was very far up in the air right now, but his personal interests coincided with the subject matter so much, why not draw up a lesson plan or ten in his downtime? In his effort, Remus had migrated to the floor with books and maps and parchment spread out all around him - though for Remus, a messy spread of jumbled half-ideas still resembled intentional and tidy stacks of texts. No reason to become a slob just because he was on house arrest.
Remus was peering at a book in his lap, having finally given in to the pair of reading glasses he'd stowed away in a desk drawer years ago. He couldn't exactly hold the book, his hands still painful and bent, and he wasn't used to looking at text from so far away. And seeing as how he couldn't just use magic to bring the book closer to his face...reading glasses, it was. He wasn't able to do any writing, either, his brain busy and full with ideas he couldn't get out. It took him a while to hear the soft knocking on his door. He hesitated. Remus wasn't too excited about unexpected guests anymore, but in the end, he decided he didn't really have a choice and got up to answer the door.
There was no one there. Or there was, maybe, but Remus was having a hard time seeing them clearly. He definitely felt them, and heard them. Maybe it was the glasses. Remus pulled them off his face and wiped them on the shirt he was wearing (it was Gabriel's shirt, the only t-shirt he owned being the one he unashamedly stole from his boyfriend). He put them back on, and now there was definitely no one standing on his doorstep. Remus looked up and down the porch for a moment and peered into the dark garden. Not even a toe. He shut the door. When he turned around, there was Gabriel, clear as day.
Remus had not expected to see Gabriel so soon, and certainly didn't expect to see him now, and most certainly didn't expect to see the man inside of his house somehow. Remus blinked at the blonde as he grinned and fixed his hair, wondering how in the hell- Oh. Oh! Remus pulled the glasses back off his face and stuffed them into his pajama pants pocket. There wasn't a thing wrong with his eyes. "Gods, I thought you were a ghost or something." Remus took Gabriel in, very real and very solid, and smiled back at him. He wasn't even thinking about what this meant, Gabriel being here, he was just so happy he was here. Remus went more than willingly into his arms, sliding his own arms around Gabriel's waist. Remus wanted to hold him and never stop, but he would follow the blonde's lead. The happy surprise started to wear off rather quickly as Remus' already overfull mind kicked into gear. Gabriel was here, and willing to touch him, but what did it mean?
Those thoughts were still pretty damn easy to ignore, of course, what with Gabriel so close and Gabriel's hands on him and Gabriel asking if he could stay over. "Do I look like the kind of fool who would possibly say no to you?" Remus grinned. Even if his brain demanded to overthink, it was at least in a positive direction. Gabriel wanted to have a little secret with him. Gabriel was here. "I've missed you so much." Remus hadn't kissed, really kissed, Gabriel since he was arrested. He so badly wanted to now, Gabriel's face was in prime kissing territory, but Remus lost his nerve and landed a peck on his cheek at the last moment. There was no point in trying to move things too fast out of desperation and need. He wasn't going anywhere, and Remus thought Gabriel might be trying to show him that he wasn't going anywhere either. "Do you want pajamas? I wasn't planning for bed, yet, just getting comfortable. But we can, if you're tired."

Glasses suited Remus' face very well. They managed to make him look even more sophisticated than he already was without aging him very much. It activated a very small kick of doubt, what was someone like Remus doing with someone like him? Gabriel knew exactly who he was and it seemed so unusual that someone like Remus would be interested in someone like them. Tea against coffee, books against bars, scars against cheekbones. Somehow they worked wonderfully but now more than ever the auror had to question why there was even something in the first place. Was he just a tool for the werewolf to keep his finger on the pulse of the Ministry? The man did seem to have a thing for aurors. Rationally he knew that didn't make sense, Remus was friends with much more influential aurors than him. Gabriel had been the lowest rung on the ladder with people like Potter, Weasley and Meadowes were up at the top. Knowing this, being logical didn't help the little flutters of doubt that emerged from the whole mess their relationship had been the past few weeks.
He slipped in and Remus could hardly believe it, bring up ghosts. That arched his eyebrows up, adding a cheeky quality to the grin on his face. "Are you often visited by ghosts?" Holding and touching Remus made it very easy to forget. A lot of things made it easy to forget. He wanted to forget and move on, but pesky feelings of betrayal and injury persistently clung to the back of his mind, occasionally whispering reminders that Remus didn't trust him and how much it hurt. His protectiveness and loyalty were bigger and more intense than the achy feeling those things left in his chest, but only just. His loyalty brought him here, to the man's house because when he'd come to take Remus' wand he promised him that they would fight back, figure out a way to resist the Ministry and Gabriel was nothing if not a man of his word. In a way their relationship was pushing back at the Ministry's demonizing and dehumanization of werewolves. Of course he was there for love too but he hadn't allowed himself to even think of the word since Remus was arrested.
He could miss Remus, he could feel sorry for the man but he couldn't allow himself to acknowledge the love that had grown for him just yet. It was hard when they stood there together, wrapped up in each other's arms. He could feel the word sitting on his tongue, begging to be spoken as affection welled up in his heart, the same heart that fluttered like it belonged to a school boy and not a grown man when Remus kissed his cheek. It was chaste and quick, but it was like giving a cup of water to a man dying of thirst. He drank it all up and needed more but... couldn't. "No, it's alright. I'm not tired." The auror was more awake now then he had been when he first arrived. He untangled fully from Remus to take his hands to examine them. Comfortable didn't exactly compute with multiple fractures. "How are your hands? No-Maj healing seems so tediously slow. Do you need help doing anything you need your hands for? I can do it for you while I'm here, write things or something."

"Surprisingly...yes." Remus was grinning now, too. Gods help them both if Lavender ever caught wind of Gabriel - the ghostly girl would have an absolute field day with such a pretty blonde, not to even get started on how said pretty blonde was dating the proclaimed world's most boringly-dressed professor. "For your sake, let's just hope you never meet her." he added with a quiet chuckle, shaking his head. There was really nothing he could do to stop her, though - Lavender was by far the most unflappable ghost Remus had never encountered - and he didn't know if he really wanted to try. The afterlife must be terribly boring, who was he to try and ruin her small joys?
Because Remus knew all about those now, small joys - with everything possible taken from him and his life thoroughly humbled, just the sight of Gabriel brought Remus a nearly indescribable happiness, a joy that could only be expressed through smiles and gentle touches. Not even his own overfull thoughts could take that away from him right now. Gabriel wasn't even tired, he said, widening Remus' smile as he beheld the man. He didn't only get to look, he got to hold and hear and feel. A whole night just for them. And Gabriel wanted Remus to put him to work. Remus laughed, staring down at his hands in Gabriel's and flexing his fingers the tiny little bit that they would allow him to now.
"It's miserable. Not the pain, really, just the time," he nodded his head and then looked back up to Gabriel's face. "But I am not putting you to work tonight. This is all I want you to do with your hands." He flattened his palms back against Gabriel's, smiling, increasing the surface area where they were touching. There was the smallest of mischievous glints in his eye. "Although, if those big, strong hands feel so inclined to opening the bottle of wine sitting on the kitchen counter...I wouldn't be opposed." Remus wasn't even thinking when he'd pulled the bottle up from the cellar earlier that evening. He could barely open a wine bottle without magic anymore - without hands, either, it was hopeless.
