Gabriel heard Remus and his various attempts to explain everything, but he never really listened to them. The auror wasn't ready to hear them, afraid of what the resulting blow would be. Listening meant that he would either have to acknowledge that Remus didn't fully trust him the way that he trusted Remus, or that the werewolf's reasoning for keeping him in the dark was sound and that his own anger was irrational and unfair. Gabriel tried his best to be good to Remus through it all, there were times that he could have been kinder but over all he managed to look out for him and take care of him. The conflict of not listening did start to eat away at the blonde, occupying his mind when it was otherwise quiet and keeping him up at night. He would waffle back and forth between needing to listen and wanting to leave that issue unresolved forever. Part of him craved the closure and that part got loudest when he was alone with his thoughts, keeping him up some nights.
The auror decided that it had been one night too many. He needed to understand and listen so that together they could truly move past it, so their very occasional visits wouldn't be poisoned with mistrust and doubt. The sun had only just started rising when he sent an owl ahead to announce his visit before Gabriel made his way to Godric's Hollow. He wasn't overly concerned with hiding his visits anymore, having developed a certain apathy towards the Ministry as a whole, but early in the morning when everything was still hazy and almost-dark just felt safer. Plus, there was something charming about a still sleepy Remus that he thought might help soften him up enough to listen.
Gabriel knocked on the door and then leaned against the doorframe, waiting for the werewolf to make his appearance. His heart was pounding , egged on by anxiety over the uncertainty of it all. Of course that same heart did a little flip in his chest, like always, when he finally saw Remus. He pushed off the door frame and straight onto his feet before tucking a stray strand of blonde behind his ear with a "Hey." He wasn't entirely sure if they were being watched or not but he figured it was best to get inside as quick as possible. With a glance over his shoulder, Gabriel slid inside the old Victorian home. He turned to face Remus as he closed the door. "Sorry to bother you this early in the morning..." he trailed off for a moment as his gaze fell on the man's hands. His hands were a very sore spot with Gabriel, the barbaric nature of the injuries made him feel uncomfortable and squirmy. Instead of dwelling on that thought, Gabriel reached out and took the hands very gently in his own. They were battered and fractured but they still felt like Remus' when he held them. "I just--I finally feel like I'm ready to listen, if you're still ready to explain."

Remus awoke in the early morning hours to a light tapping on his bedroom window. The sun was very weak this early, but he still squinted against it as he rolled over to see what all the ruckus was about. There was an owl sitting on the windowsill, holding a letter. Remus felt a rush of nerves as he pushed out of bed and into his slippers - he much preferred early-morning owls to late-night owls, but the content of any such letter that couldn't wait until a more reasonable hour was usually never very happy.
This one, though, was. Maybe. It took Remus a while to maneuver the window open with his slowly healing hands, and then he had to rummage around for both a treat for the owl and his glasses before he could sit back down on his bed and read the letter. It was more of a note, really - and it was from Gabriel. Remus' stomach did another flip. It was quite early to be thinking about the man, and Remus was extra vulnerable to all of the things thinking about Gabriel did to him. Gabriel was coming to visit. That was happy, right? Remus was always happy to see him, at least, even if the man wasn't very happy with him right now. Apparently he had something to say that couldn't wait. Remus couldn't even begin to describe how he felt about that.
Coffee would help him sort out his feelings, surely. Remus was thoroughly a tea man, a true Brit, but sometimes a situation just called for coffee. Situations in which he wanted to be as cognizant and present as possible, for instance. It did tend to make him a bit jumpy and agitated if he drank too much of it - but that wasn't a worry this morning. Remus just got a pot started when there was a knock on his door.
He knew who it was, but he checked through the curtains anyway. Perhaps he was hesitating just a bit, buying time. Right now he was living in a world where Gabriel might possibly hate him, but was still taking care of him. Once Remus opened the door, that world would be gone - for better or for worse. That was a risk he had to take - because there was no way in hell he was leaving Gabriel standing outside on his front porch.
Remus lost what little of his nerve he had left as soon as he opened the door. Gabriel positively glowed in this light; Remus swore, sometimes he was just too good to look at for very long. "Hello." Almost immediately after the first thing from his mouth that morning, Remus yawned. He shook it off as he moved out of the way so Gabriel could come inside, gazing up at the slightly taller man and, as always, falling into a smile. "You never bother me." Remus wondered how many times he would have to tell Gabriel before he believed it. These thoughts, the haziness of early morning, and the feeling of his hands in Gabriel's...all served as a very good distraction, almost making Remus miss the man's next words. After a brief pause of staring lovingly down at his knuckles, Remus took a sharp intake of breath and snapped his gaze back up.
"Really?" He tried to squeeze Gabriel's hands, but ended up just wincing instead. His face thereafter kept a mixed expression of pain, happiness, and hope - right at home on his scarred visage. "Okay, yes. Of course!" Much more gently, he tugged at Gabriel's hands, before turning to loop an arm behind his back and nudge him toward the kitchen. "Let's go to the kitchen. I made coffee."

Despite the emotionless image that Gabriel liked to try and project, he was a highly emotional (not so) little bean. While he perfected the art of the reserved and aloof demeanor, the auror was a slave to his own moods and feelings. Once the decision was made that he would listen and try to understand Remus' explanation, he had to act quickly before the uncomfortable sensation of vulnerability sent him scrambling back behind his protective walls. It was a risk to willingly listen and forgive. There was a very good chance that it would drowned him in guilt or that he would be confronted with the fact that trying to move past such a blow so early on in a relationship was a mistake, but Remus was worth all of the risk.
Remus' sleepy smile helped abate the heavy feelings of doubt that were already creeping up. The werewolf didn't necessarily fit the traditional definitions of 'handsome' or 'beautiful' like a tall, blonde haired and blue eyed auror would, but he was smitten just the same. Remus had light, kind eyes that contradicted the turmoil and suffering he wore on his skin in the form of vicious looking scars. His age and wisdom announced itself with splashes of grey that peeked out from underneath light brown. Remus was not the traditional definition of beauty, but Gabriel found him to be beautiful in wonderfully unique ways. "You always say that." he said absently, running his thumb over Remus' hand. "But it's so early..." The werewolf's gaze shifted abruptly and there was nothing but sincerity behind his own as he watched the older man's reaction.
When the werewolf winced his heart squeezed uncomfortably, coaxing his neutral expression down into a frown. He brought the man's hands to his lips, placing a gentle kiss across the fractured fingers before Remus was urging him along towards the kitchen. "Coffee?" he asked, incredulousness mixing with a hint of humor. "You, who's more fond of tea than the queen herself, made coffee? I'm impressed." The prospect of Lupin made coffee provided a nice distraction from his nerves and eased a little of his worry as the two men made their way into the kitchen. He promptly took up space leaning against one of the kitchen counters, preferring to slouch against it where he could tap his fingers and fidget away his energy to sitting quietly at the kitchen table. Gabriel swept back bed-tousled tangles of blonde as he settled against the counter and crossed his arms loosely over his chest, sans coffee. "So.. How do we start? Do you wanna just tell me your side of things, or should I tell you what my questions are? I don't want this to start feeling like an interrogation or an investigation."

"It's true," Remus shrugged. It was true. Seeing Gabriel instantly lit him up every time - how on Earth could he be bothered by that? "Someone must have forgotten to tell your owl that," Remus teased quietly, sneaking a glance up at Gabriel beneath his eyelashes just before the man filled his heart to the brim, giving Remus the two things he wanted most out of Gabriel - plenty of kisses, and a chance. Gabriel was going to listen to his explanation, finally. Remus had to struggle to reign in the unbridled joy he felt at this chance as he led Gabriel to the kitchen. It was just a chance to explain, not necessarily to fix everything. There was a chance his explanation just might make everything worse. Oh, Merlin. Remus shook his head at himself and focused on the fact that Gabriel was here, right here and right now, and he had an arm around him and everything felt fine. Just fine.
"Well, it is just so early," Remus teased the blonde again, winking and releasing him to lean against a counter. Gabriel always brought out a youthfulness in Remus no matter what else he might be feeling - and for Remus, youthfulness meant mischievousness. He sneaked glances at Gabriel as he poured the coffee, mostly because he liked to look at him but also for any sign or clue of how the other man might be feeling. Gabriel could be pretty good at hiding his emotions and that made Remus nervous, too. His hands shook a little as he topped off the coffee mugs and brought them to the counter, setting them down next to Gabriel. Remus looked at him a moment, and then left his side again to fetch the milk and sugar. When he finally settled in, turned toward Gabriel with his hip against the counter and his hands tucked under his arms, they were ready.
"I think...you should ask me what you want to know. And I can fill in the other bits as I go." His voice lifted into a question at the end, seeking Gabriel's approval of this plan. Now that the time was here, Remus actually had no idea how to start. When he imagined himself telling Gabriel everything, it all sort of just came out at once, as is only possible in dreams.

"I didn't realize it was ever too early for tea." Gabriel commented as they arrived in the kitchen 'til it dawned on him that Remus was being a cheeky bird and turning his words back on him. He broke that neutral expression once again for a restrained grin of amusement. "Oh, that's very clever of you." He settled back against the counter feeling a little less tense about the whole matter. If they could joke, they could get through this. The conversation to come still had him on edge and he felt too unsettled to sit still. He watched Remus move around the kitchen, mostly in silence. The tremble of his hands prompted him to break said silence. "How are your hands healing?"
Gabriel didn't really know what to do with his hands as the two men readied themselves for the hardest conversation probably ever. He didn't want to keep his arms crossed, that looked closed off but what else to do with them? Stick them in his pockets? Rest them back against the counter? Instead he picked up the cup of coffee. His hands felt warm around it and they were occupied in a casual way that didn't scream 'defensive/not listening'. "Alright." he agreed vaguley. He would have to be very careful not to turn it into an interrogation. The auror in him had to resolve to ask questions and listen, not accuse and try to puzzle things out on his own. He had to make the choice to trust what Remus said was true or this would all be pointless.
His gaze shifted down to the cup in his hand as he thought for a good long moment about what questions he would like to ask. There was about a thousand begging to be asked and they spoke to different parts of Gabriel's personality. The neediness in him wanted to know why Remus didn't trust him, did they not mean the same to each other? The auror wanted to know more of the technical details and the warrior-based Wampus wanted in on the whole deal. "Alright." he repeated with more confidence. "Okay. What is your group's main objective?" That would be a good starting point. The Ministry's description of the group was very dark in nature and it just didn't align with what he knew or thought he knew about Remus.

He didn't have all of Gabriel, he could tell by the way man restrained himself and the tension that seemed to radiate from his very bones - but it was a whole lot better than nothing. Gabriel was here, and that was something, something Remus could work with. It was much better than not having him here at all, and this was Remus' chance to put that to bed for good. Gabriel was giving him his chance to explain and Remus wasn't going to waste a drop of it. He made sure to flash his most adoring smile Gabriel's way when he caught onto his little early morning joke, and he made sure to pull down Gabriel's favorite mug for him to drink his coffee out of (did he have a favorite mug? Remus was pretty sure he'd seen him drink out of this one at least twice.)
"Slowly but surely," Remus answered Gabriel's question over his hands, pausing and flexing his fingers almost fully for him, both to show off his newly regained trick and to stop their shaking. Once he was leaning across the counter from Gabriel, he busied himself with the milk and sugar because the more awake he felt, the more restless he became. He had so much he wanted to tell Gabriel, and he had to do it right. He handed Gabriel the lead, hoping that would maybe help him get his thoughts in order.
Though Gabriel seemed to be struggling, too. Remus knew there were just as many questions as there were answers about this whole ordeal, but it didn't really make him nervous. He thought, given a chance, that his excuses really were rather sound. Only time would tell, and after a few false starts where Remus watched Gabriel patiently, Gabriel asked his first question. It wasn't really the one Remus expected first - it didn't really have anything to do with the two of them, and that was where Remus felt the biggest need to explain himself - but really, it was a good one to start. A little thorough background research never hurt anyone, Remus always said.
"The Order of the Phoenix has always been, first and foremost, an opposition group to Voldemort and his followers," Remus began, sounding every bit the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor he was born to be - and that was probably not good. He didn't want to be condescending or anything of the sort, just open and honest. He took a sip of coffee before starting again. "That's grown a bit more complicated since the '70s, though...mainly because there is no longer a Voldemort to speak of. We've evolved into quite more of a resistance movement since then, with no one main goal, just trying to help clear the world of his...residuals. I for one very much doubt Voldemort's influence will be gone from this Earth in my lifetime, or yours. We just want to make sure it doesn't become a problem again."

Since. The. Seventies. Those three words felt louder than all the others, ringing in his ears and wiggling their way into his brain like an earwig. Since the seventies. Seventies. This was something that Remus had been doing for decades. In a way it made it more forgivable but also more unforgivable, all at once. It had been an established group for long before he met Remus.. Gabriel was born in the seventies. But then.. It just made the whole thing feel bigger. This wasn't some tiny, thrown together group. Remus hid a gigantic part of himself from Gabriel and that left him feeling very put off. The auror looked down at his cup of tea, not really seeing it but being unable to look at Lupin. He listened, though, as Remus continued on with his explanation.
More questions bubbled up. Some of them were half accusatory, others were too interrogation-like. Gabriel could not and would not fuck this up by changing the dynamic of the conversation. The blonde chewed thoughtfully on his lip while staring at his tea, working through and discarding his questions one by one. Why didn't his group just let the bloody Ministry handle whatever was happening now? Why did Remus have to make himself the Minister's enemy? That's what got him in this predicament. "Why didn't you trust me?" That question escaped before he had the chance to shove it aside.
Gabriel tore his eyes away from the cooling coffee to look Remus straight on. The dam holding back the torrent of his suppressed emotions broke with that question. "Why, after everything, did you have to lie to me?" It felt like they were going in circles, it always came back to that. In the end he could easily forgive the fact that the Order of the Phoenix existed, he could even understand it, but the lack of trust hurt. Honesty was as important as loyalty to him. "Did you think I was going to turn you all in? Throw you to the wolves?" The corner of his mouth ticked up at that, amused by the irony of the question. Remus was the wolf. It didn't lighten the mood nearly enough. Gabriel gave up the guise of coffee and set it aside to cross his arms over his chest. Almost immediately he unfolded them and stuck his hands into the pockets of his jeans, determined that he would not close himself off to Remus. Yet. He wouldn't do it yet.
Doubts were creeping into the back of his mind faster than he could shove them back out. Was this something he could really forgive? Could they pick up the shards of their broken relationship and super glue them back together after this? "I really want to understand, I've tried to understand but I just can't do it. The more you tell me about it the less I do understand."

Maybe Remus did a little too good of a job making this sound like less of a history lesson, because Gabriel's next question threw him completely off guard. He was expecting more questions about what exactly it was that the Order did, or maybe what Remus' role in it was...but Gabriel went straight to the heart of it. Remus gaped at him for a moment, the weight of Gabriel's sudden and undivided attention holding Remus still in place. He busied himself with another sip of coffee to give himself time to switch his train of thought over. Explaining why he had lied to Gabriel might prove more difficult than explaining the history of a multi-decade secret organization.
Remus waited until it seemed like Gabriel got all of his questions out - this was something quite a bit more emotional than simple questioning, and Remus needed to know what he was really asking. What was really bothering Gabriel, more than anything. When the corners of the blonde's mouth ticked up, Remus blinked in confusion but smiled back instinctively. Ah - wolves. "I didn't personally think that, no," Remus said, shaking his head. "But it wasn't just my decision to make. We have protocol, given the sensitive nature of the organization. Everyone has to come to an agreement on who needs to know what we're doing, and it takes time." Surely Gabriel could understand that, knowing now who was a part of the Order - half of his coworkers, the same people he'd been trying to gain trust from for months. "I've trusted you, Gabriel, for a long time. I know you're a good man. If it means anything, I was going to tell you eventually. Invite you in. I would have fought for you. The timing was just off." The future of the Order was still rather up in the air, but Remus knew Gabriel would have been a perfect fit.
Gabriel abandoned his coffee just like he abandoned any pretense that he wasn't bothered by this conversation. Good - Remus liked Gabriel best when he was open, vulnerable with no distractions. He spoke his truths then, like explaining what he wanted and how he just couldn't get it. Remus sighed and put his own coffee cup down, reaching out and putting a light hand on Gabriel's forearm. "And that's all I want, is for you to try. I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit, though. You came here this morning wanting to listen. I think you're starting to understand something, good or bad."

There were so many things running through Gabriel's head that he couldn't focus on just one, so he jumped from subject to subject. It was no help, succeeding in only making him feel dizzy and disoriented, not enlightened. Gabriel managed to stump Remus, or at least make him stumble a bit. His own emotions were running wild while Remus took a stalling sip of coffee, buying himself time to gather his thoughts. Gabriel was needy and desperate and angry and sad, all at once. His heart was racing, anticipation seeping into every thumping beat as he waited for the man to answer, to finally lay out why he wasn't trusted with this bit of information.
What came felt like an excuse. It couldn't have been his fault if there were protocols, could it? "And where did that protocol get you?" He asked viciously before he could catch himself. "Locked in your home, having nearly the same conversation that we've had a dozen times, trying to figure out if any of this is salvageable." And even if there was a protocol, that didn't completely absolve him from guilt. Gabriel had asked time and time again if there was something that Remus wasn't telling him only to be told no over and over. It was driving him crazy by the time everything came to light. "You could've just told me that you couldn't tell me. You pretended like there was nothing there, like I was out of my mind to be suspicious when you were hiding something. You looked me straight in the eye and hid something from me, every single day."
It became painfully clear the longer their conversation went on that it couldn't work, at least not right now. Remus touched him and he shifted away, folding up his arms to put them out of reach. Gabriel kept his spot leaned up against the counter. All Remus wanted was for him to try, and he tried. Gabriel put an enormous effort into trying to ignore it, to pretend. He could only be distracted by his protective instincts for so long before his own feelings came bubbling up. "I don't think I can do this, Remus. How can I ever trust you again?"
