Summer was rapidly drawing to a close and Jas had less than a month of freedom left before it was back to school and all that rubbish. Part of her was excited, returning to Hogwarts meant a new season of Quidditch and the ability to use magic again but it also came with things like professors and homework. The Gryffindor liked most of her professors well enough but no one but a Ravenclaw liked homework. There was a little bit of uncertainty brewing, too. Headmistress McGonagall, Professor Lupin and Professor O had hit a slew of legal trouble over the holiday. Nasty things were written about them all over the papers but she didn't believe a lick of it. Not even Merlin himself would be able to convince her that Professor G was anything other than a harmless but strict old woman. Jasmine was reluctant to believe anything that came from the Ministry, the current regime seemed hell bent on stigmatizing creatures and that was only a few steps away from deeming one wizard worthy over another. Jas had read about those times and it seemed pretty scary.
Currently Jasmine was wasting away the hot and sticky summer night by occupying a table at the wizarding pub by herself. As a rebellious teenager it was her job to fight with her parents and they'd had a particularly brutal row that evening over the fact that she wanted to go to Quiggley's the next morning rather than helping in the family's flower shop. Her parents were muggles and they didn't understand how important Quidditch was or how anxious the state of the wizarding world made her, which caused her to misdirect her anxiety and lash out. The fight ended when Jas stormed off to collect her school books and flee to a part of London where her parents couldn't reach her. The Leaky Cauldron. The Gryffindor's school bag was stuffed under the table and various books, parchment and quills littered the top along with a requisite bottle of butterbeer.
She spent a good part of her time chewing mindlessly on the tip of her quill, unable to focus on her summer homework. Jas' mind was wandering too far away to hope to get anything done. Occasionally she'd flip through the book but dark eyes scanned through the paragraphs without really reading them. When she gave up on her work, Jas leaned back in her booth and observed the rest of the room. Jasmine spotted a vaguely familiar face among the crowd, a rather large man who'd helped her one day in Diagon Alley, heading over towards the bar. Instead of waltzing over and saying hello, Jasmine embraced her teenage self and tore a piece of her parchment away, balling it up and tossing it at the back of the man's head.
It easily found it's mark, square in the middle of the man's cranium. When he turned around she played innocent, her nose in the book while she tapped her quill against the worn wooden table. When the trollish Medi-Wizard turned back around she tossed another piece of parchment at him, repeating the whole process. This time a smile twitched across her lips when he whipped around. And a third time, she lobbed a whole piece of parchment this time. When he turned a third and final time, Jas was shaking with laughter right down to the curls on her head. Clever little beast that she was.
"Oi! you big lug!" She called to him finally. "Remember me? I reckon not, seeing as I'm not trying to float away now."

Diagon Alley was packed. Young children scurried about with their parents in tow, and packs of older children roamed freely from shop to shop. Back to school shopping had officially begun, it seemed, and adding it to the usual hubbub of the Alley created quite a mess. Luckily, Theo was tall. Trollishly tall, some would say, but today being a troll finally came in handy for him. He could see clear over almost all of the heads around him, and being a troll lent him more than enough shoulder width to part the crowds right where he needed to go. He navigated the crowds like a sea of people, and when that got to be too hot and slightly sweaty for him, he decided he would reward himself with a drink. Good troll.
The Leaky Cauldron wasn't much better than the Alley, but at least it had alcohol. Theo made his way to the bar, more than a little bit amused to observe that he was one of the least frazzled people in the crowd for once. While other people were stressing over back-to-school lists and sales, Theo was just...browsing. He couldn't really say what brought him to Diagon Alley that day, and he'd picked a hell of a day for a random excursion, but his spirits were lifted so much lately that he felt like he was walking on the clouds. He had Mali back, and even though things were still stressed and strange and scary, he had her back. He was okay.
Theo leaned against the bar after finally getting his order in. He spaced out as he stared at the liquor bottles in front of him, not bothering with the people around him. For some reason, he sometimes preferred a nameless, faceless crowd to a bar full of people he might recognize. Right now, he definitely preferred being squeezed in with a bunch of strangers to the eerie emptiness of a dark wood...Theo felt something bounce against the back of his head and he started, whipping around. He looked around, nothing, then down. There was a tiny piece of paper at his foot. He tried flattening it out with his toe, but it looked blank and then his bartender was tapping him on the shoulder, bringing Theo's attention back to the bar and his drink. He took a big, refreshing gulp - and felt another tap on the back of his head.
More paper. Theo shifted himself sideways a bit, taking a bit longer to observe the crowd this time. Not behind him of course, which would have made the most sense, but sort of off to the side and down the bar. Clearly it was some drunk throwing things at him. Theo tensed up when he felt something much longer bounce off his hair a third time - this time, he looked all the way behind him, and the culprit was unmistakable. Some girl, giggling her head off at her cleverness.
Theo squinted at her when she looked up at him and said something. He tilted his head and lifted his chin a little, and only then did he recognize her (he'd spent most of their time together looking way up at her, after all). The floating girl! The memory, combined with the girl's laughter, popped a grin right on to Theo's face. Just a moment ago he'd been ready to clock somebody - but his spirits were high, remember? The cloud walking? Theo waved at Jasmine before bending down to pick up the biggest piece of paper she'd thrown at him. He wrestled his wand from his pocket and tapped the paper, forming a paper airplane that he sent zooming back her way, aiming straight for her curls. He scooped up his drink and followed it.
"No floating today, so you're looking for something equally as dangerous? Maybe a bar fight?" Theo looked down at her table as he approached. "Or...ah, a scholarly head start on your homework. I see. May I sit?"

It was definitely no drunk throwing things at the large man, just a girl with too much to do and not enough focus to do it all. NEWTs were on the horizon and she had a god awful amount of studying to do after she finished the summer assignments and no motivation to do any of it. She much preferred chucking things at the head of innocent bar goers. It was alright, though. She was picking on him because his head stuck up above the crowd and as someone who was long and gangly herself it was a hundred and ten percent alright.
He had some spunk, that one. Jasmine had only just stopped laughing like a loud, boisterous loon when there was a ball zipping at her own head. As a Lion who was used to defending herself and her hoops she blocked it easily, a hand shot up and snatched it clear out of the air. "Good try." Jas said enthusiastically with a wide grin. "I'm the best Keeper Gryffindor's had since Ron Weasley. It'd take something better than that to pelt me." If she wasn't the best she was certainly the most full of herself since the Weasley Quidditch Regime took the school by storm. Jasmine certainly embodied the bolder traits of her house without shame. She wouldn't shy away from a bar fight, actually. It sounded exciting.
The Gryffindor craned her neck for a moment, scanning the other occupants. "I'd pick more of a match if I was looking for a fight." Bar fight or not. She went for challenges, not death wishes. "Who would you pick? I bet a big sod like you could take anyone in the place, yeah?" Oh homework. A schoolgirl wouldn't be getting into any bar fights.. yet. Jas sulked into her book when the tall bastard reminded her of it, nodding when he asked if he could sit."NEWTs are this year." Any wizard or witch would understand, wouldn't they? The Gryffindor gathered up her notes into a single pile and slid one of the heavier books off the table to give the man some room. "If they can even have NEWTs with half the staff gone." So far she'd heard of three staff members who weren't able to return but that was pretty significant.
Jasmine ran a hand through her hair and then tried to smooth them down without any luck. Her curls were as wild as the girl underneath them, true to her lion mascot and unable to be tamed. "And you? You're here to drink, because that's what adults do when they're bored, don't they?" She reached for her own bottle, a butterbeer, and took a sip. "That stuff tastes terrible, dunno why you'd drink it instead of butterbeer. Then again, you must be mad, wandering into Diagon Alley this close to the new term."

In an admittedly impressive show of athleticism, Jasmine snatched Theo's offending paper right out of the air before it even hit her. Theo paused for a moment, gaping, before grinning and making the rest of his way over. "Why am I not surprised to learn you spend your free time hovering hundreds of feet in the air?" It only made complete sense, really. The first time he met Jasmine she was hovering in the air.
"I am pretty tough," Theo said with a cheeky grin as they considered bar fights. He glanced around quickly at her question, and then shrugged. "I try not to think about it too much until someone's already punching me in the face. There's a tip." Theo didn't go around trying to start bar fights much anymore. When he was younger, absolutely. He scanned every pub he went in for a bloke a big sod like him could take on.
Clearly, based on these past behaviors, Theo didn't know a whole lot about NEWTs. What he did remember, made him cringe for the poor girl. He chose not to sit for any of his own back in the day, and that had been only a slightly worse decision than actually making the commitment to studying for them. Theo had seen many a brave Gryffindor collapse under the pressure, not to even mention the Ravenclaws. He had no real tips or advice for NEWTs, just a sympathetic grimace. "Hey, you might get lucky yet," Theo shrugged again when she mentioned the missing staff. "Any idea what it is you want to do after school?"
Theo had to laugh at the girl's practicality. "Listen to you; practically an adult yourself," he nodded. He took another sip, because gulping alcohol in front of what was still technically a kid didn't seem the wisest idea. He shrugged for a third time. "Not the biggest fan of butterbeer. Must be my mature, adult tastebuds," he teased, but he agreed with a nod and another chuckle when she called him mad. "Right, though? No idea what brought me out here today, really. Checking the skies for floating girls, perhaps." Theo took another sip of his drink. "Anything in particular making you want to study in a pub?"

Ah, she knew that it was only a matter of time before that little incident was brought up. Not one of her best moments but she managed to play it off pretty well with a shrug of her shoulders and a toss of her mane. "I usually use a broomstick." As much as she liked flying, she'd keep on that broomstick, thank you. Floating freely through Diagon Alley had been fun for the first minute or so, but the lack of control was uncomfortable for such an Alpha personality. Plus the tree branches were bloody awful.
The Medi-Wizard's tip sounded terrible, to be honest. Jas fixed him with a skeptical look complete with a raised eyebrow. While she was new to the world of bar fights she got into a fair amount of fist-based disagreements with other students. Mostly mouthy Slytherin and arrogant Ravenclaw. "Here's a better tip. Punch first." When her attention turned to her studying paraphilia she examined a scribble in the corner of her Runes notes, trying to determine if it was a doodle or something significant. Curse her tendency to doodle. "Dunno which one would be lucky. If they managed or if they didn't." NEWTs were supposedly super important when it came to future careers but Jasmine would be lying if she told you she wouldn't be relieved if the whole thing got canceled.
Thinking about the future was scary. Every decision she was going to make this year felt important, including what to do after she graduated. Cass was struggling with that, they'd written about it, and she was sure that she would be in the same boat at the end of the term. Floundering through her fledgling adulthood with no direction or goal. What if she chose the wrong career path and invested a ton of time and energy only to discover she absolutely hated it? Would she be trapped by her choices? Hindered by them? The whole thing made her chest squeeze uncomfortably tight and she ran a hand through her curls. "Not a bloody clue. " Actually, Professional Quidditch Player was on her list of possibilities, but it felt like a childish aspiration while sitting in a pub surrounded by shop keepers, Ministry drones and a Medi-Wizard.
They were all shrugs, the two of them. Jasmine's lips turned up in a grin that was laced with sarcasm. "More like someone punched the tastebuds out of your mouth. Butterbeer is loads better than that rubbish." The Gryffindor took another long sip, just to savor the buttery not beer or whiskey taste of the stuff. "Find any?" First years were getting their wands, it wouldn't be a stretch for one erroneous swish to inflate some poor innocent girl and send them floating down the street much like she had earlier. In a rare move, Jasmine answered his last question with honesty and not with her armor of biting wit. "I just missed magic s'all. Hard to read about it and not be able to feel it."

"Smart," Theo nodded, grinning. He himself preferred having both of his feet planted firmly on the ground at all times. He was too big for a broomstick, darn it, and he had an inkling it would take a hell of a lot of magic to make him float without one. Not that he would be trying it out anytime soon. He was too proud to admit he had a fear of heights - that was different from spiders, everyone hated spiders - but...Theo most definitely had a fear of heights.
And while he wasn't afraid, exactly, of bar fights, he found himself...weary of them. Jasmine looked skeptical, only making him grin further. Her own tip made him laugh. "That's a solid tip basically anywhere but a pub," Theo countered. Every good Gryffindor knew to always throw the first punch - you know, for honor and all that jazz, but... "Punch one drunk guy in a pub and suddenly you're fighting his three best mates, two of his cousins, his mother-in-law, and his dog, too." Maybe that's what Theo was weary of, getting ganged up on. A fight was no fun if it wasn't fair. Did no one have any honor?
"Do you actually want to take them?" Theo tried to hide any incredulity in his voice, knowing full well this was not the kind of encouragement a teenager needed anymore of. It was just...exams. Ew. He just couldn't see the appeal. He'd turned out alright without them, right? And Jasmine seemed a lot like him, in some ways more than others. He could definitely commiserate with the not having any clue what to do with her life after school. "Hey, you'll figure it out. It took me nearly ten years after school - but look at me now!" His grin turned cheeky and he spread his wide arms wide, jostling a poor few wizards standing nearby. Theo really was proud of where he was, though. He'd finally found something he wasn't half bad at, and that he enjoyed. "Medi-Witchery could be an option. It's pretty fast paced and can be exciting. Sometimes you even get to fight people." You really never knew what you were going to get in the magical medicine world, really. Aggressiveness, irritability, and loss of control of punchy and kicky limbs were all oddly common side effects of a number of spells and potions. A Medi-Wizard (or Witch) had to do what a Medi-Wizard (or Witch) had to do. "But mostly it's helping people. And gross stuff."
"That's...actually possible," Theo laughed, taking a moment to swipe his tongue across the top of his mouth. It still felt fairly buddy...He shrugged it off, eyes roaming toward the ceiling as if there might be a floating girl or two in this very pub that they hadn't noticed before. "Nope, not yet." He looked back down at Jasmine's homework. He liked the answer he gave her a surprising amount, given he didn't really know the feeling she was talking about. Theo had never really been away from magic for very long. Even when he was doing a lot of Muggle landscaping back in the day, he had his wonderful, magical home to go back to at the end of the day. Although...
"Actually, I know the feeling." Didn't he? He'd been without a wand for quite a while this year. That sludgy, backed up feeling was coming back to him now that he was thinking about it again. "Like, I guess I get why they don't want kids doing unsupervised magic over the summer...but it's kind of messed up to show you all something so awesome and then just take it away."
