It was a wonder that Mali liked living in London, given how drearily overcast and unbearably hot it was for a good part of the year. Her shopping trip in Diagon Alley was cut short by an afternoon shower, forcing the witch to seek cover in The Three Broomsticks. The rain did little to cool the weather down, instead making the air wet and thick. It wasn't a unique idea, to wait out the storm, and the old wizarding pub was packed full of magical beings. Mali retrieved a cold butterbeer from the bar and thought she'd make a new friend to pass the time with. She spotted a sullen looking young girl tucked away in the corner. Sullen girls needed a little sunshine, didn't they?
The witch got a second butterbeer from the bar because the young one's glass, whatever it was, looked empty from where she stood. Mali headed over, humming something that sounded vaguely like a Celestina Warbeck song as she waded through the crowd, winding her way over to the brunette. " 'Allo!" She said cheerfully while taking the seat across from her new friend, asking "Mind if I sit?" without waiting for an answer. There was no option, really. The girl looked sullen, Mali was feeling cheery and she was determined to share that cheer. It was hard to feel anything but happy, given how well things were finally going. The Death Eaters were gone, there was no threat of death looming over them, things had quieted down a bit with the Ministry, too. It was still heavily slanted against werewolves, but nothing new had come out and Mali counted that as a victory. She and Theo were doing spectacularly, because everything else was doing spectacularly too. It was nice to enjoy their relationship without worrying about losing him or leading him into trouble. To spend her time with him because she could, and not because she needed him to feel safe.
"I'm Mali." she slid the spare butterbeer across the worn wooden table. "And you look like you've got a lot on your mind." With the gift given, Mali relaxed into her seat and brushed back rain soaked hair from her forehead, tucking the damp strands behind her ear. "You know what's a good remedy for a full mind? Butterbeer. Look it up, it's in all the healing books." The older witch teased with a grin, lifting her own bottle to her lips. "S'the best tasting medicine there is."

Cassidy sort of hated the rain. Just sort of, not all the way. She liked rain when she was curled up comfortably around a cup of coffee and watching it from a window, or even on a walk through the woods when it pushed autumn leaves from the trees. But she hated rain in the city. It was all dirty puddles and seas of umbrellas getting snagged on her coat - not to mention her hair. Her poor, defenseless hair, which in the rain turned into nothing less than a giant poof of frizz.
So, when Cassidy got caught in a rainstorm in the middle of her job hunt through London, she had the bright idea to seek shelter at the pub. It turned out to be a not so bright idea, only because it seemed every other witch in the city had the same idea for the same pub, and all of them packed together in here kind of blocked out all the brightness. Now it was stuffy and dim. And damp. It was better than rain, though, so Cassidy got a drink and tucked herself into a corner to wait the rain out.
Alas, when she found herself at the end of her drink, it was still raining. She eyed the bar, but people were still pouring into the place, crowding around the bartender, and she wasn't much for crowds. With no drink to quench her thirst, Cassidy instead tuned into the conversations around her for some good old fashioned eavesdropping. Lots of people were talking about rain, some about Quidditch...and one smarmy looking duo two tables over from Cassidy were talking about werewolves. Not in an exactly sunny way either, as sunny as one could get about werewolves. Cassidy knew she should tune them out, that getting silently pissed wouldn't help her or her brother, but she found herself unable to. As of late, she found herself mad at the world and helpless against it, so it felt sort of good to have two specific jerks to focus that anger on.
Apparently these emotions were dripping her from along with the raindrops, because Cassidy blinked and there stood a girl at her table, asking to sit. Cassidy managed to blink again and mumble an, "Um," before the girl went ahead and sat down anyway. Cassidy shoved her frizzy curls behind her ears, looking at the girl from underneath furrowed eyebrows. She looked just a little older than Cassidy herself. Maybe her brother's age.
"Hi Mali," Cassidy said cautiously, eyeing the butterbeer Mali pushed across to her. Her brothers had told her not to accept the drinks strangers bought her at pubs...but she had to admit, Mali didn't really look like a stranger. Not stranger danger, anyway. She sort of looked like sunshine personified, even if she was currently soaking wet. She ignored Mali's comment about her current mental state and introduced herself instead - "I'm Cassidy. Thank you." She wrapped her hand around the butterbeer.
"That's not what my brother says. And he's a Healer." Cassidy was passing back her own slightly less endearing form of teasing. In fact, she wasn't sure she and Clayton had ever had a conversation about butterbeer...but still. He would know. It relaxed Cassidy's full mind quite a bit to think about her brother in this context, as a Healer, rather than the one she was stuck on before - as a werewolf. "But I think I'll take your word for it. You look like you know what you're talking about." And thus, she sipped.

Mali's sudden appearance had thrown the girl off a bit and the young brunette seemed a bit weary of the butterbeer. "It's not poisoned, promise." the witch told the girl with amusement as she settled into her forcibly claimed seat. After introducing herself, Mali's new friend.. Cassidy, apparently, accepted the drink but countered her argument about the medicinal advantages of butterbeer. Mali blinked and furrowed her eyebrows in thought, picking through her brain to see if she could turn up the name 'Cassidy' in her mental archives.
The girl took a drink of the remedy for all the world's ills, claiming that Mali looked like she knew what she was talking about. "I'd hope so." Mali said, lips curling back into her smile, brightly lit with the same amusement as before. "I'm a Healer, too. What's your brother's name?" The other witch's facial features did tickle something in her memory, but she couldn't quite place where that tickle came from. "Maybe I know him." Was it her eyes that felt familiar? Or the slope of her nose? It could be that she didn't know the girl's brother at all, that he'd been her replacement when she left. That thought took a little stab at her heart, the sharp twinge straining the corners of her smile. Sometimes Mali missed St. Mungo's and she wondered if she could go back. Maybe now that things had quieted down she could handle the stress of remembering what happened there every day.
She covered up this chink in her armor of cheerfulness with a sip of her own butterbeer, washing away the guilt of abandoning her position and her patients. "I used to work at St. Mungo's up on the spell damage unit. Are you planning on following in your brother's footsteps? You're out of Hogwarts, aren't you? Or have you snuck out for the night? Bloody terrible weather for a sneak out."

"That sounds exactly like what someone who just poisoned a butterbeer would say," Cassidy observed, but she shrugged and sipped the drink anyway. A poisoning would at least make today more interesting...though Mali was already filling that role nicely. Cassidy was a bit of a loner, not because she particularly despised people, but mainly because she never really made the effort to not despise them, either. To talk to them, get to know them in a friendly way. Mali, on the other hand, walked up to complete strangers and bought them drinks. Interesting, indeed.
And she was a Healer! Cassidy tilted her head at Mali, trying to remember her face. "Really?" Maybe Cassidy was a bit of a loner because she was a very private person, too. She was fine with vague sorts of conversations and connections, but once they started to get into the details, she clammed up. Still...Mali looked like a person you could trust with your details. "His name's Clayton. Tall, looks like me but less cute, less curly."
Mali traded details with her, yet more evidence that she was trustworthy. "Oh, he works in creature damage, or whatever it's called." Honestly, Clayton's Healer speak confused the heck out of her sometimes. She shook her head at Mali's question, curls and raindrops flying. "I just graduated. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do. I don't know about Healing, though. It seems...interesting. And gross."

Mali snorted out a laugh when Cassidy drank the butterbeer. As a very honest former Hufflepuff she would have likely sold herself out if she was trying to feed random strangers a poisoned drink. Her behavior was probably pretty weird to people who didn't know her, but Mali loved people. They were her favorite. She loved talking to them and learning about them and doing nice things for them, so this was all par for the course especially given the fact she was trying to wait out rain and finish her shopping.
The two women were both searching through their memory to place each other. "Mm." she nodded her confirmation, digging through her memory of a hundred different faces. St. Mungo's was such a large, busy place. Mali knew she knew that face the more she looked at it, it felt familiar and like the name sitting on the tip of her tongue, just out of recollection. Clayton! "YES!" the witch clapped her hands together in unearned victory. Now that she knew it was obvious, she saw Clayton everywhere in the girl's face. "I know him! I haven't seen him since I left." Mali didn't make much of an effort to keep up with the coworkers she left behind, preferring to firmly close the door on St. Mungo's but she could afford to peek inside a little right now. The distance she'd gained would make it easier to close it.
It was ironic that Clayton worked in Creature Injuries given his very permanent creature injury. She nodded along as Cassidy spoke. "Yeah, Healing can be really gross, but it's a niche. You either love it or you don't. There's lots of other things to do that aren't quite as gross." Mali shrugged and took another sip of her butterbeer. "Clayton's a pretty good Healer, though." The witch paused for a moment and cast a glance to the rest of the pub before leaning in and dropping her voice low, like her next question was some dirty secret. It sort've was. "How is he doing with his.. monthly problem?"

Mali had a cute laugh, and in Cassidy's world people with cute laughs were always people you could trust, so she didn't clam up and refrained from ducking from Mali's gaze as the girl tried to work out if she knew Clayton or not. It was okay, she had to remind herself, to let other people in sometimes. It was much easier to accept that when those other people had connections to her most favorite people in the world. Mali did know Clayton, and that made Cassidy's soul rest even easier over this encounter with a stranger. "I'll tell him you said hi," Cassidy smiled.
As Mali tried to sway Cassidy toward Healing (or agree with her point...it was kind of both, and for some reason that made Cassidy like her more), Cassidy observed the other girl. She still couldn't quite place her name or face...that didn't really surprise her, though. Cassidy and Clayton were pretty similar in some ways, a membership to the Loner's Club being one of them. It also didn't surprise her that Mali thought of Clayton as a good Healer, though it did make her smile - the Bradshaws may have been of rather sparse interests, but when they liked something, they dedicated themselves to it. "Is Spell Damage gross?" She asked. She already knew Creature Damage was gross. Cassidy was a big fan of magical creatures, but more on the side of caring for them, and not the humans they sometimes damaged.
Cassidy furrowed her eyebrows as Mali suddenly leaned in, like they were in on a secret. She considered herself a fairly observant gal, but the tone of the conversation switched so suddenly it left her head spinning. Or maybe Mali's question was the cause of the spinning - more precisely, the panic her question caused in the curly-haired girl. Cassidy pulled back instinctively, like she could pull Clayton's problem and Mali's knowledge of it away with her. Cassidy was of the strong opinion that the less people knew about her brother, the better. At least while things were still dangerous for him. So it bothered her greatly that this girl, whom she couldn't even remember ever being mentioned by Clayton, knew so much about him and his...problem.
Cassidy was quiet for a long moment, and then another moment, and then another one after that and she knew she needed to say something because this was getting awkward. But her brain was on fire with weighing her options. She'd already decided she liked Mali, and honestly, her question seemed harmless. It just shocked Cassidy, is all. She wanted to protect Clayton and that meant keeping his secret locked up tight. But Mali already knew that secret...maybe that meant she wanted to protect Clayton too, to help him, and at some point Clayton had obviously made the decision to trust her. And anyone Clayton trusted, Cassidy trusted.
"He's...okay," she murmured finally, staring into her butterbeer. How much did Mali know, though? How much did Clayton trust her with? "Trying to stay safe, mostly. He's...having a hard time getting the potion every month." Mostly because the potion was cost prohibitive at this point, maybe a little because Clayton hadn't exactly registered himself yet...
