Remus and Gabriel were being more careful than ever, after paying a heavy price for their carelessness days before. Gabriel would've liked to have some polyjuice potion to better disguise his identity but that involved convincing a very reluctant witch to have her roommate make it for them under the table. Instead he went heavy with concealment. Several charms and an hour later, Gabriel was nearly unrecognizable. His hair was shortened and jet black, his eyes were magicked into a steely grey instead of his bright blue and his nose was transfigured to change the profile of his face. His temporary look was so different that he'd startled himself when he caught glimpses of his reflection in windows and mirrors.
They weren't going to follow the No-Maj's so closely anymore. They knew who they were, they knew their intentions and when they had their meetings. Tonight they'd shown up at the same old dusty pub to make sure that nothing had changed since their confrontation. Gabriel had even 'borrowed' a car with heavily tinted windows for them to camp out in as they watched the door of that pub from the parking lot. Soon they would have to take action, bring some sort of irrefutable evidence to the Ministry but for now, they just needed to know that the group was carrying on normally and hadn't gotten spooked away by the sudden withdraw of three of it's members. He and Remus had collected the cell phones of their No-Maj 'victims' and had Mali, who was more adept at texting, send messages to the group saying they had met up and decided they were done with the 'nonsense' in an effort to explain away their future lack of participation.
Gabriel was growing restless as he sat in the car, watching and waiting. The minutes ticked by agonizingly slow and he passed the time by shifting around petulantly and huffing and sighing his annoyance at how slow the hour was creeping by. Eventually, like clockwork, the men showed up one by one. Exactly on time. Then something very very curious happened, a young girl with dark bushy hair slinked in to the very same pub they were watching. "I know her.." Gabriel said, already reaching for the door handle. "She's a witch." His protective streak fluttered to life. The girl was walking into the lion's den. The auror climbed out of the car and waited for Remus to join him before heading into the pub. The girl wasn't just there... but she was sitting at the same group of tables as the witch hunters.
Stunned, Gabriel wrapped his hand around Remus' and towed him into the nearest empty booth so they could watch whatever was going on.

This part of London was wildly different at night than what Cassidy was used to - as a newly minted adult, and newly minted alcohol drinker, she'd had no reason before to visit this district after sunset, when the shops closed and the pubs and clubs opened. Now, she had a reason - and fittingly, it was also wildly different from what people usually expected from her. The normally strong and silent Cassidy was not here to party, no, but she was here to socialize. With a purpose, like a true Slytherin. She was taking a chance and taking the next steps to do what she had to do, to protect her family and her friends.
Her one acquaintance from so many months ago had turned into several, her one ideal - protecting Clayton - proliferating into many. Her new associates filled her impressionable young mind with things that sounded too good to be true, too perfect - alas, being young and impressionable, she couldn't see them for what they really were. Cassidy was convinced they were on her side. Why else would they want to help her? She didn't consider herself a stupid girl, just desperate, but she thought she pretty well knew when she was being taken advantage of. This didn't feel like that. She felt included in this - case in point, letting her come to one of their meetings tonight.
Cassidy was overwhelmed by the lively street and the livelier pub, but she tried not to let it show. She just needed to listen tonight, anyway, to learn - so she stayed mostly silent as the group gathered and began talking. The conversation sounded sort of...stilted, and awkward, but Cassidy chalked that up to her own discomfort making her over-analyze everything. Plus, they were in public...they had to be a little careful. Never knew who was listening in.

Who knew cautious could be so stylish? Remus was having complicated feelings about going back out into the field after their very recent fuck-up - but Gabriel made it very easy to feel okay. To feel safe. They were in a car, for Merlin's sake. That practically made them Muggles themselves, didn't it? Gabriel and Remus blended right in with the heavy nightlife crowds, and that's exactly what they needed. Gabriel, maybe a bit more than Remus - even with a different visage all together, he was still young and handsome and hip. Remus looked like he'd fallen asleep in 1977 and only just woken up, with stubborn wrinkles he couldn't quite charm away to go with his lightened, lengthened hair down to his chin and a pair of round spectacles that hadn't seen anything outside his cabinet drawers in three decades. As they sat and watched, though, Remus saw a handful of blokes out on the street reminiscent of his style. He was officially so old, he was vintage. Great.
People-watching was fun for all of five minutes, but as they waited for a certain group of people to show up so they could watch them, both Remus and Gabriel grew quite restless. Gabriel attempted to work off his restlessness by fidgeting, which Remus earned a marginal sense of amusement by watching. "So...this car," he started, but he didn't get to finish asking Gabriel where exactly he'd gotten a car because he'd just seen one of their targets mosey by the window. Remus went quiet and counted as the rest of them arrived at the pub, just like clockwork. When they were all in, he turned back to Gabriel - their every move needed to be very carefully considered now. Gabriel, however, was still watching the pub.
Remus just missed the witch's curly head disappearing into the pub when he whipped his own head back around to watch, but it didn't matter - they were going in. He climbed out of the car instinctively right after Gabriel - sometimes, you just knew the right move. No consideration needed. Remus could see it written all over Gabriel's face, so he happily let himself be towed along and stowed into a booth, settling into a role. He leaned against Gabriel and found the group again with his eyes, recognition sliding over him instantly at the new face. Remus Lupin never forgot a student. "She was one of mine. Just graduated, I believe." He turned his head to catch Gabriel's gaze, needing to speak with his eyes more than his words. Whatever this meant, it couldn't be good. Whatever the purpose of this group was, having to go after the young and vulnerable witches and wizards was never a good sign.

Gabriel was so agitated by the mistakes they'd made and the consequences of those mistakes that he couldn't take his eyes off the pub. Not when he was bored out of his skull and not when Remus voice cut through the silence along with his own irritable sighs. He wouldn't make another mistake like missing an important person waltzing into the bar. A young important person with curls who didn't really look like she belonged. Not running around in the dark and not in a fucking bar. He was both horrified and irritated at this development and it sent him quickly out of the car to investigate further.
The auror doubled checked that his wand was in his pocket as he stalked toward the pub and soon they were sitting in a booth. Remus reminded him that the girl had been in his class, making him grin. Quite a feat when he was in the mood that he was. "That's right." He was supposed to tease Remus about that, wasn't he? He'd forgotten but now he couldn't let the opportunity slip away a second time. "That's where I know her from, I met her in the alley, after she performed the worst disarming I'd ever seen. What do you Brits even teach at that school of yours?" The grin faded off his lips when his attention returned to the group. Cassidy was sitting with them and that made him feel very squirmy and uncomfortable. It could mean several things. Maybe she was some sort of hostage or something? No, that didn't make sense. The girl had walked in on her own volition. Maybe they'd coerced her into it.
Or maybe she was betraying her own kind. Scourers had betrayed their own kind back in the 1700s. Captured witches and wizards and delivered them to be drowned or burned. "Why do you think she's there?" He asked Remus, his foreign feeling face heavy with concern. Gabriel reached up to run a hand through his hair, stopping when he realized it was now much shorter, nothing to play with. Nevermind that, he'd fix it afterwards. "Is she even old enough to be here? She's what... 17? 18? Why isn't anyone throwing her out?" Too young. Nope. He was about two seconds from getting up and pulling her out of here by her ear, scolding her and sending her straight home. Back home she wouldn't have made it past the door before any self respecting bar tender came swooping in and shooing her away, worried for their liquor license. "I wish I had some extendable ears or something." He should've thought of that.

They were not supposed to be grinning on their very important mission - especially not after the disaster they'd made of their last one - but they just couldn't help it, apparently. Their work together just felt so right that, even with the mistakes, Remus was confident in what they were doing. Maybe a bit too confident - but they were being extra subtle tonight. Just watching. It was okay to have a good time doing it, especially if it made them grin like lovesick puppies at each other. Who would ever suspect them of anything beyond perhaps having one drink too many?
"Well, we certainly teach them to be wary of strange wizards in dark alleys, at any rate. Perhaps that's why she tried to disarm you. What were you doing, meeting girls in alleys, hmm?" Remus grinned back. "Alas, I can't capture them all with my charm. I don't particularly remember much about her beyond her face." And that - that was rather concerning. Remus' face fell alongside Gabriel's as he observed Cassidy. Not a star pupil in his class, in others maybe...but a decent grade in a defense class might've done her some good if this was her future endeavor. Magic was useless to the witch if she didn't know how to wield it properly.
"I don't think it's a coincidence," Remus offered by way of ideas why Cassidy might be here, meeting these Muggles in a pub. "But I don't think she's daft enough to be telling them all about magic, either. Maybe they've tricked her into something?" Possibilities were running wild in Remus' head and he was just speaking them as they came. A different set of possibilities seemed to be running through Gabriel's head, his observations taking him in a different direction - and all the way to a different country. It took Remus several silent moments to catch on to what he meant, but then he couldn't help the small grin that reappeared momentarily on his face. "You're in England, love, remember?"
Remus would have loved to tease Gabriel further about his American ways - he still wasn't off the hook for his Hogwarts bashing - but he also would have really loved to have some Extendable Ears to do the work they came here to do. "Do you want to try to get closer? We could sit at the bar." He spoke hesitantly - maybe it wasn't the best idea. Their every move had to be considered.
