Lyall paced her office, thin lines creasing her skin and showing her age. Yes, she was stressed (how could you tell?). She let out an annoyed huff form her nose and rubbed at the old scar on her arm. A werewolf had done that to her, so one might wonder at the fact she was now Head of a department trying to help them. But she had learnt long ago not to judge the many by the few, and in her heart held the belief that there'd be fewer attacks if they had the rights they craved. Was she deluded? Perhaps. Was she going to give up? No. At the moment she was trying to push through some new legislation to help magical beings; she was working hard on it, hence the pacing. What she needed was a break, but she couldn't have one. Not until this was done! The Beings didn't get a break from the discrimination and harassment, why should she have a break from working to help them. (Perhaps she was a workaholic, but now wasn't the time to worry about that). A break, however, (whether she wanted to or not) was not possible. As she returned to her desk and began tweaking her work, a knock sounded upon the door, and in walked another. She put on a smile. "Good day, can I help you?"
OOC: Lyall's first post! Anyone's welcome to post a reply, with anything.

Several conversations from the past few weeks replayed over and over in Remus' head as he made his way through the halls of the Ministry of Magic. He was heading back to the atrium, to Floo home after surprising his wife at work with a lunch date, but those darn conversations were as persistent as some of the flying memos he saw buzzing about Ministry worker's heads. He couldn't let them go. Many people had come to him recently with word of looming new legislation regarding creatures, not from the rightful Department of Magical Creatures that regulated and controlled them - but possibly from the Minister herself. Remus didn't trust Minister Bennett one bit. He couldn't let this go.
He was directly in front of a fireplace before his hesitations got the better of him. Remus took his foot off the hearth and walked back to the lift, punching the button for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. He thought it useful to see what they had to say, if anything, about all this - to see who was on his side and who he could or could not trust. Surprisingly, Remus didn't know many people in this department. He'd suffered so much abuse under them long ago that he rather shied away from them now, though many things had changed for the better since then. He knew of the Head of the department, a Ms. Santel, but didn't know much about her. Most of what he knew of the Ministry workers came from his wife, and Dora had never really gotten close to this one. Remus hoped for a practical explanation for that - the woman was shy, maybe - rather than a sinister one.
When he reached the department, he began to feel a bit guilty. He didn't have an appointment, and certainly didn't want to interrupt anybody...but hell, he was already here. The receptionist allowed him back, and soon he found himself knocking on Ms. Santel's door. He walked into her office a moment later. Remus had experienced too much of the world to rely too much on first impressions, but the woman had a nice smile. That was usually a good sign. He put on his own gentle smile, bowing his head at Ms. Santel before walking up to her desk and sticking out his hand. "Hello, Ms. Santel. My name is Remus Lupin. If it's not too much of a bother, can I have a moment of your time? I'd just like to chat."

Lyall took the offered hand, shaking it with manufactured warmth. It wasn't that she wasn't that she disliked the visitor (she didn't know him) she was just a rather distant person. "Good morning Mr Lupin." She subtly looked him over. She would hopefully be able to see what kind of man he was. The smile was promising, but she knew all too well that smiles could be faked as easily as the ball could roll, and she was not in the mood for a visitor who meant her, or the creatures she strove to protect, any harm. He did seem rather too polite to be a ruffian out to get her, and she relaxed slightly. As she looked closer she could see the tired bags under his ice blue eyes, and she then trusted him. That and his scars seemed to lead to one thing, and that thing guaranteed his alliance to this part of the ministry. She gave the almost compulsory request, "Please, call me Lyall." But she said it for a unique reason. She resented the Ms; she hated it. It taunted her, rubbed in the fact that she could have been a wife, a mother. Years had passed, so many years, and yet it still stung. That was why she threw herself into her work, refused to socialise and become attached to another, refused to rely on others. But that wasn't the point. The point was that Mr Lupin had something to discuss, and Lyall had a feeling she could guess what it was.
"It is never too much of a bother to talk to those who seek me. If you have taken the time to chat, I will take the time to listen." She frowned slightly, "I do hope my department hasn't been a bother."

After so many years, Remus was used to the looks. Nearly everyone he met had to give him a look over; some more subtle than others, but he stayed open and patient while they did so all the same. He didn't mind it much anymore. His face was an interesting map of scars that was hard not to look at, not to mention the curious way so much age seemed to sit so heavily on a still relatively young body. Remus used to be very self-conscious about the way he looked (the threadbare clothing he wore back then helping none at all), but he learned to love those scars because Dora loved them, and loved him despite them. He would never go around parading with pride his scars and condition, but he no longer hid his face either.
"And you may call me Remus," he responded to her request with a smile. That was a good start; Lyall certainly wasn't pretentious, if a little stilted. More and more, Remus thought maybe she was just an introverted person, maybe intensely private. Neither of them bad qualities, compared to some of the things she could be. Remus took a seat and folded his hands in his lap, listening to the department head talk with that gentle smile still on his face. "That's a healthy philosophy," he commented. He reckoned he was much the same way. He shook his head when she frowned. "No, no, nothing like that. I've...reason to watch your department over the years, and I'm actually impressed with some of the improvements I've seen pushed through. Werewolf legislation is a particular interest of mine." Like he said, he didn't go parading it about, but he had nothing to hide. Remus didn't fear for his life nearly as much as he did in his twenties, but that could always change...he glanced around Lyall's office with the best nonchalant air he could muster, adding in a shrug for good measure. "My wife works here. In the DMLE, she's an Auror. Nymphadora Lupin, do you know her? Or Tonks, as she would probably pressure you into calling her if you did know her." Remus was rambling with purpose, smiling like he hadn't a care in the world. He didn't want to seem too suspicious, if Lyall was in fact on the Minister's side of these rumors. She looked trustworthy enough, but he needed to hear it, too.
"She likes the gossip. Always coming home with little rumors and tidbits. Something strange caught my ear the other day. If you would excuse my nosiness, Lyall - is there anything substantial behind this news of new werewolf legislation floating about?"

Lyall smiled back as her visitor gave the standard reply. It was all a game, and even names were implicated. Start with the surname, then be forced to use the personal one. Give off an aura of friendliness. It was all politics, and she hated the falseness of it. Remus took a seat and folded his arms. He seemed to listen well, and she gave a small nod when he commented on her words. Perhaps he was the same, perhaps he wasn't.
She felt the relief as he denied her department being a bother. That would have meant a hastle; finding out the who, what and how of situations was time consuming and annoying. A reason to watch, eh? That certainly confirmed it, definitely a Werewolf, what with scars and curious extra aging. "I'm glad your impressed, Remus. We do try and make a difference." She answered, but to herself she couldn't help but think how much easier it would be if the powers that be were less prejudiced.
She watched with thinly veiled amusement as looked round and shrugged with falsified nonchalance. It was excellent acting, and perhaps with a less experienced worker would have succeeded. But she had been around for a while, and had learnt to see through acts with little effort. He began to ramble about his wife, an auror. A sharp sting of memory sounded like a thorn in her side. "No, I'm afraid I have been denied the pleasure of her acquaintance." Her smile gave way to a sadder, more reflective look, "It's been nigh on 15 years since I've had social time round here." Was that truly how long it had been? Yes, she'd been 35 when Alfred passed and she'd become a recluse. She brought herself out of her thoughts and focused on the man before her. He was clearly gearing up for a question, what with the rambling and smile. Ah, there it was. rumors of Werewolf Legislation. She kept silent for a moment, trying to decide what to say.
"Rumours, Remus, are rarely accurate," She began, "But they do tend to have some truth within them." She gave a small sigh. "I am trying to get through Legislation to help Magical Creatures, that is true..." She trailed of and looked to the door. It was slightly ajar, but a flick of her hand closed it. She then continued. "I can assure you that only Pro-Werewolf and Pro-Creature legislation will come from this department whilst I am it's head. From other sources, I can give you nothing but the promise that I'll try to find out whats on it, and change what I can." She scowled slightly. This new minister kept sending things back and she was sick of it. And she had no doubts that she would have full hands at with them, if her view of their prejudice was correct. "Forgive me my curiosity and assumptions," She began. "I am well versed in recognising a Werewolf in human form." She gave a wry chuckle and rubbed slightly at an old scar. "I even met one in my youth! So I must ask, what opinion do you hold of our Minister?"

"Truly all I can ask," Remus said, with a slow smile and nod. They were all trying to make a difference, weren't they? That's what it was all about, in Remus' opinion - the differences. It always seemed the bad guys, the oppressors and the corrupted, wanted to keep things the same. Even when they were creating 'change', it was just a route back to the old ways. Remus thought what this world needed was some good, solid change, and he truly appreciated anyone trying to make it.
Lyall wasn't falling for his act, if the expression on her face was any evidence. This just made Remus grin more. He didn't need to her play along, really; actually, it was points in her favor that she didn't. Politicians liked to play along. Good, honest, hardworking people liked to get things done. Lyall definitely had to be one of those people, if she'd spent fifteen years straight without any office fraternizing. Remus couple appreciate that, sure. He could be quite chatty in the right context, but he also appreciated quiet and concentration just as much. Lyall didn't exactly look happy about it, though. Remus tilted his head just slightly at her, contemplative. "Maybe you two ought to lunch together sometime. I think she'd like you; and she has plenty to talk about." It was a gentle suggestion, no pressure (though, when he suggested the same to Dora later, he couldn't promise no pressure from that end). Certainly a grown woman didn't need any help at all from some stranger on making friends. That look on her face was just one Remus thought he might recognize.
Once they reached the meat of the conversation Remus came seeking, he forgot all thoughts of friends. Or rather, making other friends for Lyall, because he found he rather liked the woman himself. She was convincing in her convictions, leading Remus to truly believe that she was a good heart, fighting the good fight. "Thank you," he nodded once she paused to scowl. "Really, that's very reassuring. Like I said, all I can ask is that you try. And at least you, for one, seem to have your heart and head pointed in the right direction." Unlike other certain Ministry workers...
Remus raised his eyebrows in slight surprise as Lyall spoke up again, eyes drawn to her hand rubbing over a spot on her arm. A scar. He smiled gently and looked back up to meet her eyes. "I wasn't so lucky, I suppose." He ran a hand over his own scars, much more copious and obvious, not all inflicted by someone else. Once, Remus might have been bitter over meeting someone who got attacked by a wolf in human form. But he knew life still wasn't easy that way, and Remus was far beyond (mostly) his days of feeling sorry for himself at the expense of others. He sighed at Lyall's question of him, relaxing and feeling candid. He'd decided he did trust her after all, not afraid to speak his mind around her - but it was still a difficult question to answer. "I'm not quite sure, to be perfectly honest. Do I trust her? No. But as you see, I feel that way about anybody I haven't met yet. Haven't managed to sneak my way into her office yet." He winked at Lyall, and allowed his smile to fall a bit. "She's certainly not doing herself any favors at gaining that trust, at any rate."

After Lyall gave her confession, she almost regretted it. Here she was, the usually cold Ministry worker, spilling her woes to a stranger. Was she mad? But then came a gentle suggestion, without pressure or pity (that hated fiend), of meeting the Nymphadora - Tonks - Lupin. She hesitated. When was the last time someone had offered her companionship? Merlin, it had been so long she'd forgotten. She'd cut them off, refused company, and then they'd withdrawn, left her to herself. She had been mourning the dead for so long, she'd forgotten the living.
"I... I think I might like that, Remus." She answered quietly "If you'd introduce us..."
She smiled slightly at his compliment, the best compliment he could have offered her. She had always put her very soul into her work, it was her life. It was nice to know that her 'heart and head' were right. She was glad the people she tried so hard to help, the Werewolves, seemed to appreciate it.
She watched Remus run a hand over his own copious scars. There it was, the confession.
"I suppose not." She said quietly. She never ceased to be thankful that he had been human, never stopped acknowledging that it could have been so much worse. She would never be as brave as the men and women and children who had met the beast. At her question Remus sighed, and Lyall could see him relax. Hopefully that meant he would answer truthfully. She wanted to see what the Werewolves thought of the Minister. She wanted to see if they agreed. She nodded along as he mentioned a lack of trust, and offered a light chuckle at his wink and joke. As his smile fell she prepared for the hard opinion, and agreed with every word. She wasn’t helping herself, what with rejected legislation and the rumours, good Merlin the rumours, of other things. Lyall sighed.
“I quite agree, Remus. She doesn’t help herself. I haven’t met her personally either, though I may try and pay a visit.” She paused, before deciding to try some optimism, “Still, I’m sure she’s lovely really, just trying to find her feet.” The falseness of her tone reached her ears and she sighed again. Optimism did not suit her.

A little bit to his surprise, Lyall seemed to accept his offer. Maybe she was just being polite, maybe something else. Either way, she showed Remus with her answer that she was a nice person - and nice people, he could usually trust. "Of course," he nodded, unable to hide his happy smile. "We can go now, if you're not busy. Or I can tell her to just stop by sometime." Still, no pressure. Remus just always got a bit excited at the prospect of another good soul in the world. Not to be put to any use of his necessarily, but just because the world needed more of them.
She had been quiet, but Lyall had a bit more to say on the topic of the Minister. In the true fashion of the nice kind of person she was revealing herself to be, she even gave Minister Bennett the benefit of the doubt. "True. We can't know until we see it for ourselves, right?" He conceded, nodding thoughtfully. "And they do have to come off a bit strong-handed at first, don't they, to show they mean business." In his gut, Remus didn't feel that this is what the Minister was doing - but jumping to conclusions was a dangerous business for anybody, and he reminded himself that his head was usually more accurate than his gut anyway.

Remus seemed surprised, Lyall noticed, when she accepted his offer. Was it truly so shocking? Yes Lyall... it really is shocking. But Remus smiled happily, before adding something. Her eyes widened slightly. "Now?" Well, she wasn't very busy. Quite honestly she could use a break. And it would perhaps be a good idea to talk to someone. But now? That could be arranged, she supposed, but... No. Now or never, she'd never be able to work herself up to it if she didn't do it now. "Ok, all right, I guess I can leave early... we can finish up here and then, if you'd be so kind, you could introduce us?" She tried to smile in a nonchalant fashion, but her nerves shone through. "Or if she's busy, I'm sure we can sort something. I hear rumours of galas and the like." She waved her hand airily. "I don't usually attend, but if it were more convenient I could make an exception."
She nodded as Remus also gave the Minister a chance, and also a sentiment. Clearly he didn't pick up on her falseness, but she picked up on his. "I suppose you're right." She muttered, "It stressful enough to work for the Ministry, let alone run it." Privately she decided that she would be having a conversation with the Minister at some point. But she shouldn't dive straight in, that's how people got hurt. Killed, even. She wondered if her worry showed on her face... she hoped it didn't, but her mask wasn't so perfect as it once was.
