Lavender was bored and listless without the students. Eternity was a long time, even longer when days dragged on and on, minutes ticking by agonizingly slow. Certainly she regretted her inability to move on, existence as a ghost was very bland. Lavender never appreciated the taste of butterbeer or the smell of fresh parchment until she couldn't taste or smell anything at all. Just another thing lost to this cursed half life. Being a ghost was definitely not all it was cracked up to be. It quickly grew monotonous and a bit lonely and bitter. Friends moved on to living company, lovers found someone who could actually keep them warm at night. The former Gryffindor princess had taken to the streets of Hogsmeade to drift along and pretend that she could smell the rain that hung in the air or smell the sugary candy that radiated out from the sweet shop as she wafted by. Somewhere along the way Lavender slipped into the rather intense and philosophical thoughts about deep things she never would have bothered with in life, like what the afterlife could possibly be like and the fragileness of mortality. Distracted, Lavender took no notice as she drifted right through someone tall, dark and handsome as he exited The Hog's Head. She shivered, not enjoying the almost-feeling of being run through and whipped around to tell whoever rudely passed through her off but stopped, mouth hanging open briefly before pulling into her most charming smile. She was delightfully surprised by the stranger, it could possibly be the most interesting thing to happen to her all day. "Ooooh, hello." she purred, previously blue eyes prowling up and down the man's very long form. "Was that as good for you as it was for me?" Lavender glided towards the man, hovering an inch sky of his personal bubble. "Just stopping in for a drink?" ________________________ Theo Ashland

After a good night there with a good friend, the Hog's Head was kind of starting to grow on Theo. It was the kind of place where no one really bothered you - not nagging little sisters, or traumatized Muggles - and it was full of little surprises, like old friends and a surprisingly amicable bartender, once you got to know the old bloke. Theo and the commander-in-chief of the old pub were becoming fast friends; which, in and of itself, probably wasn't that great of an idea, because Theo didn't really need to be drinking all the time. He wasn't, though. He just needed something to occupy himself when he wasn't working and when Mali was busy, and the old bartender made for good and non-intrusive conversation. They could bitch about the weather and Quidditch and everything else and not get to know each other at all and that was just fine by Theo. The only thing he needed to know about the old man was that he was a Cannons fan and he hated the bloody mountain winters as much as Theo.
Alas, his time at the pub was drawing to a close. He'd need to sleep eventually before his next shift or he positively wouldn't make it. Theo left the building and headed out for the streets of Hogsmeade, intending to walk his buzz off a bit before attempting Apparation. As soon as he was out of the door, though, he was overcome with a positively icy chill - kind of odd, in the middle of summer. "Oh, Merlin, yugh...," he grumbled, trying to shiver the sensation off. When he looked up, his vision was strangely cloudy for a moment, but soon cleared up - to reveal the ghost he'd just walked right through. The very unhappy ghost, by the way she was whipping around on him. "Er, sorry," he mumbled, but then something very strange changed in the ghost that left Theo's mouth hanging open in confusion. She smiled. And...and was she checking him out? He was almost flattered, but mostly creeped out. "Uh," he said smoothly, the ghost gliding up right in front of him and rendering him dumb. "That was...mm." Cold. Very cold. He didn't want to be rude, but he couldn't help but shiver, from the cold or the closeness he couldn't really tell. A drink? Oh, oh right. Theo had to look behind him to remind himself where he was. "Uh, yeah. No, actually. Just, er...on my way home." The ghost was so close, Theo was essentially trapped between the pub door and her otherworldly form. His only way out was through, and he didn't really want to relive that sensation again anytime soon. "You just, uh, passing by?" Please just be passing by. He had no idea how to make small talk with a ghost; he heard they were a bit touchy about the whole being dead thing, and that was pretty much all he could think about right now - a dead girl was flirting with him. Of all the things Theo had ever gotten himself into...this was the strangest.

Walking through a ghost was an unpleasant experience for all involved, as evidenced by the man's 'yurgh'. Of all the things he could have said, yurgh was it. Logically Lavender shouldn't have minded, it was a strange almost sensation that brought her as close to actually feeling something as she's ever been since her death several long years ago. It was more the thoughtless implication that put her off, that she was invisible (she was NOT, just a little transparent) and not worth taking notice of. How dare they, Lavender was a war hero, fallen defending the wizarding world from the darkest set of wizards it had ever seen. Surely her tragic death should have earned her a little more consideration than that. Her umbrage (not umbridge, the ugly toad) was quickly forgotten, washed away by an attractive man. Lavender did always have a weakness for handsome boys, bonus points if he had an Irish accent which unfortunately, the stranger did not.
He sounded a little confuddled by their encounter, his words seeming to trip him up. He said things like 'Er' and 'Uh'. Lavender's gaze flicked back up to his face. "Not much for words, are you? That's alright, the pretty ones don't need to have a lot going on upstairs." Her smile took on a teasing quality as she spoke. His answer to her question coaxed her eyebrows questioningly up. " That was 'mm'? Is that a good Mm like Mmmm, yes, let's do it again? Because I'm game." The Gryffindor ghost hovered half an inch closer, enjoying the way the man shivered. It was the extent of her physical influence over the world anymore. His discomfort was a bit bothersome, but not entirely detrimental. The perpetual seventh year ran her spectral finger up the man's chest. "On your way home? All alone? A handsome man like you? Such a shame."
The normally confident and collected Lavender Brown faltered slightly at his question, what was she doing? Not much anymore, obviously, not much for the past five years. She smoothed it over beautifully, meaning to give the man a playful little shove but failed as her hand passed right through him. "Well, I'm not passing on obviously!" She giggled at her own joke, the edges of her charming smile becoming strained. "Oh, but really I just thought I'd get out of the castle, you know. It gets awfully boring haunting those halls without the students. Snot nosed little gits that they are."

Oh goblins. The ghost was checking him out - and hitting on him! Theo liked being called pretty; he couldn't deny that (he preferred handsome actually, but pretty worked). The part of his brain currently soaked in booze kicked in pleasure at that, numbed to the slight insult that went with it. "You just, uh, caught me off guard, I guess," he blinked. But how did ghost ages work, exactly? Because this one looked young, and suspiciously like it was wearing Hogwarts robes. How did ghost-anything work, really? What offended them, what did they...enjoy. Theo was too buzzed for this, completely forgetting every interaction he ever had with a ghost at Hogwarts - but he was stuck, with this ghost getting closer to him and very much invading his personal space. "Er, maybe later?" No, gods. Why did he say that, why? He had no desire to do any walking through any ghosts. This was just so weird, Theo didn't know what to do, the reptilian parts of his brain responding to things the more conscious parts were rather disturbed by. He was overwhelmed, and had to get out of this very spot at the very least. Get some air and some space, please Merlin, some space. As the ghost traced her finger up his chest, Theo gave one good shiver and blurted out, "Want to walk with me?" Oh gods. Walk, really? This one wasn't doing much walking nowadays.
He was in for it now, surely. As Theo braced himself for the accompaniment of a heavily flirtatious girl-ghost, she actually caught him off guard in a different way. A joke. Theo found himself snorting out a laugh even as her ghostly hand went right through him and produced more chills. On top of many things, he'd been worried about offending her...death...but she seemed sort of okay with the whole situation? "I suppose that's true," he shrugged with half a grin, testing the waters. This was good, a good direction of her not trying to...float through him, again, and maybe letting him go home eventually. The ghost was apparently taking a vacation from the castle. "Ah, I see. Other ghosts are pretty mournfully boring, huh?" Ha. Theo laughed at his own jokes, too, at least they had that in common.

Still, Tall Dark and Handsome offered little in the way of substance. If she were alive and he was younger he might have been adequate for a snog in a private corner but not much else. As frivolous and superficial as Lavender was, she craved a little mental stimulation along with her eye candy. Someone with a personality that couldn't be mistaken for a potato that had taken root. Lavender cleared her ghost throat, nodding awkwardly as he tried to explain away his behavior. "Ahh, okay. We'll just say my beauty has left you speechless." she preened as she spoke, running dull, permanently manicured fingers through formerly ash blonde locks.
Her face fell into a pout as he declined to do their little walkthrough again. It was akin to turning her down for a date, ghosts got so few pleasures in their Not Life. He mitigated his snub by inviting her to walk with him and she brushed off the fact that she didn't actually walk anymore. "Oh, well, if you're going to twist my arm I suppose I could." Her current boy toy laughed and grinned, Lavender actually found him handsomely attractive when he smiled, and returned fire with a joke of his own. Her own smile took on a genuine quality and Lavender giggled behind her transparent hand. Puns, who didn't love a good one? "Mournfully so, yes. How do you think I died? They bored me to death."
They were supposed to be walking, or rather she would be gliding. Lavender tilted her head thoughtfully for a moment. "A gentleman should offer a lady his arm, but I'll save you the trouble and decline it. Were you really drinking by yourself? That's almost as sad as a ghost flirting with someone ten years her senior."

"Yeah," Theo agreed and tried his best to smile charmingly, though he still felt pretty gobsmacked. Still, the ghost talking to him and being full of herself was better than her hitting on him incessantly and trying to glide through him, so he'd talk all darn night if he had to. Until he could get away, which didn't really feel like it was going to happen anytime soon. The ghost was still very close, and very concentrated on him, and really Theo found himself more and more not wanting to be rude to it...her. She was probably just lonely. He could imagine being a ghost pretty much sucked; they had to take their fun where they could get it (why else would haunted houses even be a thing?). Theo couldn't completely deny her this moment - or maybe that was just his drunkenness convincing him that chatting up a ghost was a perfect normal, even good, idea. Either way, the bloke wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.
Well...sort of. He wouldn't be out of her company, but the ghost girl at least agreed to a walk. That would give him a little more space, something he was eager for at the moment. He already found that just not having the ghost breathing up his neck and focusing all her attention on him was freeing, and he was able to laugh at something she said. Why, they even cooked up a bit of banter! Theo laughed again; he remembered some of the Hogwarts ghosts being very touchy about the subject of their deaths, and was glad the one flirting with him was at least able to joke about her own. She could joke about her condition, too, saving Theo the trouble of having to awkwardly explain why he thought taking her arm would prove a bit difficult logistically. He shrugged apologetically, shoving one hand in his pocket and keeping the other arm hanging loose by his side as he turned to walk down the street - he could at least give her the faint illusion that they were holding hands or something. Floating next to his free hand was close enough, right?
The ghost's little jab at his drinking habits made Theo pause as he just started to walk. That stung a little bit - was she calling him both an alcoholic, and old? Ouch. Theo turned to look at her with a measured look. "It's not like I do it all the time. My girlfriend's just busy tonight, so...," he shrugged. Just a little bite back; his being a taken man ought to put a little thorn in the ghost girl's translucent side. His expression then turned playful, because given any remote chance to do so, Theo would inevitably brag on himself. "I don't really think that's sad. Obviously I'm just irresistible."
