There was a whole slew of new faces at the staff table last week and Jas was slowly making her way around to welcome them all. No, that wasn't yellow on her robes but just because Gryffindors were the brave ones didn't mean that they couldn't also be friendly too. She remembered what it was like when she arrived as a first year and didn't know anyone. Sure, these were adults and maybe they already knew each other but a welcome wouldn't hurt. There was a definite advantage to getting on the professors good side, too. Maybe that was a little Slytherinish of her but honest, her intentions were mostly genuine. Jasmine walked down the corridor with a little bounce in her step. The sixth year carried a cute little decorative cellophane bag full of cookies courtesy of the house elves, the Professor could wander down to the kitchen any time but it was the gesture, right? Along with the cookies the Gryffindor carried a potted oriental lilies. Benefit of being the child of a florist, she had access to spectacular flowers. It was a cheery little welcome gift if she did say so herself and Jas was grinning when she knocked on the office door of the DADA professor. When the Professor inside answered she entered the room with a upbeat, musical "Heeellooo!" and a wide smile. His appearance was slightly startling with the scars and all but her grin only faltered a little. "How are you? Professor Lupin, right? I'm Jasmine, 6th year Gryffindor and I thought I'd just drop in and say hello, see how you were doing. I've brought you these." She presented the gifts "Mum's a florist and is always on about how flowers can spruce up a room. Castle's dreary enough so I thought your office could probably use it and everyone can always use cookies!" Once the items were out of her hands the curly topped Gryffindor ran a hand through her hair before propping them both on her hips. "You enjoying the castle alright? S'big, but that's not a bad thing. Is it your first time here or did you go to school here? I met one of the other new professors yesterday who went to a different school. Bloke used to play for Puddlmere! Are you into Quidditch?" _____________________________________ Remus Lupin

He was home. Remus was very pleased, and not at all surprised, to find that sense of home had not faded one bit from Hogwarts. Even during the year when he taught Harry, when he was eventually driven out by forces beyond (and a bit within, he supposed) its walls, the place fit him like a comfortable old sweater, warm and familiar. Sweet memories were around every corner, and nowhere was Remus more nostalgic than Hogwarts - and the older he got, the more he greatly enjoyed indulging such nostalgia.
Admittedly, the professor's offices held memories gleaming a different sort of light than the others - a light that made Remus' grin a bit more mischievous as he looked back and saw himself, and James and Sirius and Peter, thinking they were oh so clever and always, always in trouble. Remus was sitting at his desk with that grin on his face, mind only half on the lesson plan he was outlining in front of him, when a knock sounded at his door. He told the knocker to come in, putting his quill down and leaning back in his chair to watch the door.
In walked a girl, certainly not shy, named Jasmine. "Hello. Yes, that's me." Remus' grin remained uninterrupted by his visitor, who apparently was here to check up on him and cheer up his room with gifts. How pleasant. And she was a Gryffindor, of course, which only furthered his grin. Remus stood to take the packages from the girl's hands."You're quite right about the cookies. From the kitchens?" Hopefulness colored his tone, surprising himself with how much he missed the elves' cooking. He placed the bag on top of his lesson plan and then took a moment to hold up and admire the potted plant before settling it in the center of the window behind him. He turned back around to Jasmine with a genuineness in his smile. "And I absolutely adore lilies. Thank you, Jasmine. You're very kind."
Jasmine had much more to say. Remus wholly welcomed the distraction - the very best part of the castle, after all, was its students. That's what he came back for in the first place - the bright, happy young minds he could only hope to leave an impression on. He missed that most of all, and now he was doing something about it. "My favorite place in the world," he nodded, "I went here, many moons ago. I'm interested to see if she still holds all the same secrets from those days." He raised an eyebrow at Jasmine, having just an inkling that she might have a penchant for exploration, in such a big place. Gryffindor and all - a personality that also shone through in her excitement for Quidditch (what else?). "Well, how about that! Which one is that?" Life had been an utter whirlwind lately, and Remus was nearly ashamed to admit he hadn't met all of his new coworkers yet - that was very unlike him. "I like it alright, I suppose." Remus briefly wondered if any of these young Gryffindors would still be impressed with his closeness to the Potter boys. "I take it you are a big fan? Are you trying out for the house team?"

From the kitchens? This man must have been a former student of Hogwarts. The House Elves' cooking was second to none. Jas' lip curled up in a teasing grin. "God no! We've got a secret baking operation up in the dormitory. Suck up cookies are our specialty." It was obvious she was joking, mainly because she was laughing at her own sarcasm. Jasmine Watson found herself very funny, thanks. If one couldn't make themselves laugh then they would be hopeless at coaxing it out of other people, wouldn't they? The Gryffindor beamed with pride as he thanked her for the gift, genuinely pleased that he liked it. "You're welcome. I'm glad you like it. Your office is looking brighter already." Professor Lupin was already shaping up to be one of Jasmine's favorites. He listened to her speak with interest, not like he was just bidding his time 'til she finally stopped talking. Knowing her that could take quite awhile as she could talk to anything that stood still long enough to listen. "It's a pretty alright place, innit?" It was hard for most students, former or present, to talk about Hogwarts with anything less than a strong note of fondness in their voice. For Jasmine, Hogwarts was her chance to be spectacular instead of painfully ordinary. Maybe she wouldn't be the best witch but she would definitely be the best witch in her family. Plus Quidditch felt like her niche in life. The sixth year snorted a laugh at the term 'many moons', the irony of his word choice lost on her but it was a funny phrase all the same. "You don't look that old. I'm sure it wasn't as 'many' moons as you seem to be trying to imply!" He, apparently hadn't met the other professor yet. Maybe the dueling professor really was as shy as he seemed or the DADA professor too busy. It was a popular subject, after all. "Professor O." It was awkward to call him that after knowing him as Aje Odili, former Keeper for Puddlemere. She was all about keepers and Puddlemere always had the best. "He's from some school in some African mountain but he was a bloody brilliant keeper years ago, but apparently quit to take up auror business." The lanky Gryffindor girl made herself comfortable in one of the chairs in front of Professor Lupin's desk, crossing her legs and running a hand through unruly curls in an attempt to tame them into something more manageable. It was a tick, she constantly fretted over her hair because it never seemed to fall the way she wanted it too. "Me?" her face lit up with excitement and she leaned forward, elbow propping on her knee. "I've been Keeper since my third year. Rubbish they're making everyone try out for the team this year. There's not a finer keeper in all of Hogwarts. Maybe a humbler one, but humble doesn't keep the quaffles out." ____________________________________________ On the off chance she ends up in another position we can pretend the conversation was different

Remus laughed along at Jasmine's joke, enjoying her easygoing nature. She seemed like the type that could engage just about anyone - Remus could relate to that. He might be a bit more reserved, but he thought he could at least relate to just about anyone. Even people much younger than him, as evidenced by the cadre of his current friends. "You know, I wouldn't be surprised. Only a Gryffindor would actually go through with an idea like that," he teased. He nodded his agreement that his office looked brighter already, turning around for one more brief appreciation of the flower Jasmine brought him. "Lilies are the perfect flower for it, definitely."
Jasmine also seemed to share his fondness for the castle - not that that was surprising. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who actually hated Hogwarts - especially so soon after missing it for a while, be it for a summer or a decade. She didn't buy his 'many moons' logic, which actually made Remus laugh out in surprise. "It's not often I hear that, now. Trying for extra house points already?" He was teasing again, but it was all honest. Remus' scars and condition in general aged him beyond his years, and for some strange reason, people often found it fit to tell him that. It was refreshing to hear to hear from someone that he didn't look that old, he supposed. "I taught here about a decade ago now, too. That's a bit more recent," he grinned.
"Ah!" Jasmine's further explanation of the other new professor caused him to exclaim. There was only one person he knew with that particular backstory. "Aje? Yes, I know him. He's a...friend of mine." Friend wasn't exactly the right word, Aje mostly kept to himself in Remus' experience of him, but he did do some work with the fellow and liked him well enough. "You see my Quidditch ignorance. I always forget that side of him. I met him as an Auror; my wife is one, as well." Did the young lady need to know all this, or want to? Perhaps not, but Remus found himself quite chatty these days and Jasmine an eager listener. Remus filled that role as well, of course. He sat back down and listened with interest as she detailed her burgeoning Quidditch career. "Well, you certainly sound like you've got it in the hole, to me. Good luck. Have you thought about trying out for Captain?"

Professor Lupin was quickly climbing up her 'favorite professor' list. Professor King would always hold top spot out of house loyalty but Lupin was sure to give the Head of Gryffindor a run for his galleons. The man seemed to genuinely enjoy their interaction and wasn't humoring her out of obligation. Jasmine pondered what he said with a tilt of her head and thoughtful squint before shrugging her shoulders. "Secret brown nosing cookie making yeah but I think you might find a secret lab set up in the Ravenclaw dorms, there's a few mad scientists in that bunch." Brilliance often went hand in hand with eccentricity, some of them were plain odd. Speaking of the flowers, Jasmine nodded her head before adding on "My mum's a bit into flower language." Being a florist it was rather important, after all. "Lilies are supposed to represent sweetness and beauty. Perfect thing to combat the darkness, yeah?" There was too much ugliness in the world and it was leading to a lot of tragedy, maybe flowers meant little in the long run but the meaning would be well remembered. "Jasmine's s'posed to mean friendliness and cheerfulness or something. Flower language fits pretty well in my case, I'd say."
Extra house points? Professor Lupin was (sort of) on to her and her plan to wiggle up into the new staff's good graces. She laughed at his teasing. Jasmine was a full on laugher, not a chuckler or a giggler. She laughed hard, holding her sides and leaning forward. A few moments later she regained her composure and shook her head, grinning as she ran a hand through her mane of curls. "You've caught me! I'm trying to get Gryffindor a good lead so we won't fall behind when our secret cookie operation is discovered. The Headmistress will go bonkers when she finds us out." Jasmine listened to the dark arts professor with genuine interest exclaiming a "Blimey, a decade?" The Gryffindor wasn't even apart of the magical world that long, ten years seemed like an awfully long time to teenagers. "Why'd you stop?" Normally bold and blunt, she bit her tongue to hold back the question of where he got his scars. Maybe it was teaching last time, horrible accident or something?
Aha! He knew Professor O and Jas thought that was great, thrilled for any opprotunity to talk about how cool it was that the former Keeper was now teaching. She was sure he had a poster of the man stuffed somewhere in her trunk. "I've always wondered why someone would make a jump from Quidditch star to Auror. Seems like a big leap to me, they're not even remotely similar." An auror for a wife, maybe that explained the scars. He could be an auror too. "Were you one as well? Is that where you learned about Defense?" The implication that she should try out for captain actually made her blush and Jas shook her head hastily, waving off the idea. "Me? No, 'course not! Liza's the captain and she's aces. Brilliant at quidditch and really fair and level headed. Not a lot of people like my brand of gentle, constructive criticism. I couldn't lead them like she does."

"True," Remus nodded in agreement with Jasmine's assessment of Ravenclaws; then he held up a thoughtful finger. "But. I've known a few mad scientist Gryffindors too. We can't forget the namesakes of Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes." Remus had little doubt, as a Gryffindor herself, that the girl wouldn't know about the infamous owners of that mouthful of a joke shop.
And speaking of namesakes, Jasmine couldn't possibly know what all this flower talk was doing to Remus. The old man was bound to get weepy eyed here soon. "Absolutely," he nodded in solid agreement as she informed him of the nature of lilies. "I can think of no better flower for it." He smiled when the girl detailed her own floral name - he could agree with that assessment as well. "It fits. Names can certainly say a lot about a person, can't they?"
Cheery and friendly, indeed. It usually didn't take Remus very long to decide if he liked a person or not, but Jasmine was helping him reach that decision with record speed even for him. Even her laughter was pleasant; genuine. He joined her when she fessed up her secret plan. "Your secret is safe with me," he promised, crossing his heart with a finger that again went into the air with a thought. "As long as you keep my secret bias for my favorite house hush-hush, too." He winked. Remus would never, but he couldn't deny the thought hadn't occurred to him a time or two his last time around teaching; especially when the Slytherins that year had been just so, snivelly...With a grin, Remus leaned across his desk conspiratorially. "For the record, the Headmistress is just as fond of cookies as the rest of us, don't let her fool you. Her favorite is shortbread, if I remember correctly." Now he was stepping into dangerous territory - getting himself in trouble with Minerva.
They could joke and smile all day, and probably would, but Remus equally enjoyed the inquisitiveness. Even if it was personal. "A whole decade," he echoed, nodding. He had a light smile on his face even as she asked her question. He knew it was coming, from someone, eventually. Even if all these students were too young to have had him personally, they had older siblings. Besides, his name and his story weren't exactly a secret. "Not a lot of people were very happy with me in those days. A lot of people still aren't, actually, but I have more people vouching for me now. The Headmistress, for one." He was vague on purpose, allowing Jasmine to ask more if she wished but he didn't want to come off as a sob story. He just wanted to make sure he didn't come off as dangerous, either.
As much as Jasmine apparently admired Aje, as long as Remus continued to associate himself with the Dueling professor, he thought he could rest assured the girl wouldn't fear him. "Aje is a fierce protector," he tried as way of explanation as to why the man left Quidditch. Remus wasn't entirely sure himself, truth be told. He knew some of the reasons but he had never gotten to know Aje well enough to know if those were the only reasons. "I suppose he needed some way to exercise that drive in him." Remus shook his head at her question. "Never an Auror, no. Just things I've picked up over the years. It's been the focus of my study since I was younger than you."
Beyond her friendliness and her cheeriness, Jasmine also showed a humble side. He smiled when she waved off the very idea of her being Quidditch captain. "That's fair. Have you thought about what you want to do after Hogwarts any?"
