The morning after Tonks' death - The Burrow
Crystal takes the loss of her friend hard and ends up at the Burrow.
Crystal was in a daze. Her brain seemed to have completely shut down, unable to process the information it had been given. It was just too much. One sentence was all it had taken to make her entire world implode. She didn’t notice the cold morning air cutting through her sweater or the tears slowly trickling down her cheeks. It took her a while to even notice where she was – sitting on the porch of the Burrow. She didn’t really remember how she’d gotten there. Apparating probably. But now that she was here, she couldn’t seem to make herself do anything. She should probably knock on the door, see if those inside had heard the news yet. It might be just the wind, but occasionally she thought she could just make out the sound of someone crying inside. If they knew, Crystal didn’t want to go in. Seeing everyone upset would make it that much more real somehow, would force her to accept this was really happening. (It couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t. It was all just some sick dream, and any minute now she would wake up.) And if they didn’t know… Well, if they didn’t, Crystal couldn’t bring herself to deliver that news. She couldn’t do to their hearts what had just been done to hers.
She really didn’t even know what she was doing here. Actually, that wasn’t completely true. She was here because there wasn’t anywhere else to go. Because the place she usually went when life fell apart was currently a ransacked mess and the person whose comfort she usually sought was… She couldn’t even get herself to think the concept. It was just too unreal. She hadn’t believed it at first when one of her colleagues had told her. But the crushed faces in the auror department hadn’t let any question. It was true. No matter how badly she wanted it to be a lie, it was true. She knew somewhere in her mind that there were things she should be doing right now. Someone needed to check on Remus. Someone had to tell Teddy and Lily James. (Bloody hell, where had their parents sent them last night? Were they in the Burrow right now?) Someone had to figure out who the hell had done this. But Crystal couldn’t seem to make herself move. All she could do was sit and stare as slow tears rolled one by one unheeded down her face.
The front door opened behind her, and she somehow found the energy to look up. @onlyjoking was standing there in the doorway. It was only then that Crystal finally noticed the moisture on her face. Not that she particularly cared. She turned her head to stare back out at the land in front of her. “It’s Tonks,” she said, her voice flat and hoarse. “She’s gone.”
Finally saying it out loud seemed to bring the whole thing slamming home. The emptiness filling Crystal’s chest erupted into sharp pain. It wasn’t possible. This just could not be happening. Tonks was always so full of life. No matter what scrapes or danger she ran into, she always came out the other side. Always. She was like the big sister Crystal had never had. Tonks was the reason Crystal had pulled through losing her father. So who the hell was going to pull her through this? Crystal pressed a hand over her mouth as she tried to swallow the flood of tears rising within her. She had to keep it together. People were going to need her to be strong right now. But how was she supposed to do that when the brightest person in her life, the one who always made everything seem like it would be okay, was gone?
