Muggle London felt safer than the magical world. There were more people and it was easier to fade into the background and become part of the anonymous masses. Plus, on the chance that someone did try to snatch her off the street again, there would be witnesses. Someone would report something and hopefully that would make it back to the Ministry or Mister Lupin's secret society or something. It wasn't easy to be out in the general population and aside from a night or two with Eoin, Mali had been hiding out at her parents house. Every dark corner looked menacing, like it could be hiding someone with wicked intentions. Every jostle and bump felt like someone trying to steer her on towards said dark corners to be whisked away to a rotting, dirty farmhouse again. That's why she'd chosen early in the morning to meet Theo, when the sun was rising and filling all those sinister corners with morning light. Things felt fresh and new and just a little less scary. They were to meet in a quaint little coffee shop. The location was ideal, just a few blocks from the apartment she shared with Eoin and just close enough to walk (or flee) to Grimmauld Place. Charing Cross Road was nearby as well and if Mali could convince Theo to go with her she planned to stop in Diagon Alley and see about replacing her wand. Eoin would have come along for either errand if she had asked him too but he'd done so much and had so much on his plate that she couldn't. Mali arrived ahead of schedule as always and had claimed a table where she sat and fidgeted with a paper coffee cup, waiting for Theo to arrive. She alternated between watching the door and glancing down to her watch. The minutes ticked slowly by, almost agonizingly so. At least the coffee shop had cupcakes, that would make their meeting a little bit sweeter. They had to talk, they'd taken time to process and now they had to figure out how to move on. It was partly Mali's fault, the thought that Theo might die had hurt so much that it frightened her, she didn't want to feel like that. He didn't keep her waiting long, Theo's large frame was soon lumbering through the door. She stood to greet him as he headed over to the table, pushing onto the tips of her toes to press her lips against his. "Hi!" Mali said, grinning despite her earlier nervousness. "I've missed you." After she'd gotten over the reluctance to feel so intensely about someone that the thought of losing them physically hurt, the fact that she was spending so much time away from him had physically hurt. It was intense, it was a little scary, but life with Theo was definitely sweeter than life without him. She loved him and that was something precious in a world where love was being overpowered by hate. When Mali sat back down and resumed her fidgeting with a now empty coffee cup she caught her lower lip between her teeth. It was worth asking now, so she could start the mental preparation if the answer was no. "D'you think after we talk a bit you could come with me to Diagon Alley? I need to replace my----" Oh, that's right! They were in Muggle London. "My... The thing that they broke. You know.. " __________________________________________________________________ Theo Ashland

Theo was not a morning person. He was groggy at best, but he slumped along the city streets the best he could. He at least had a destination in mind, and a beautiful girl waiting for him there. And tea, too - there was also most definitely tea in his future. Theo would wake up at the crack of dawn for Mali (there were close enough right now, as it was). He missed her so bad it was starting to hurt. That ache was a good thing, though. Not only did it motivate him out of bed and keep him awake - as far as he was concerned, it was the answer he needed. The reason they decided to take a couple of days of 'space' between them. What Theo and Mali (and Draco) went through was nothing short of traumatic, and they needed a few days to set their heads straight, see where to go from here. With how much he missed her over only a few days, Theo had a good idea that wherever they went, it was going to be together.
He had his doubts too, of course. Even though he wanted the space too, it worried him that Mali wanted it. He was terrified of the thought that she would leave him, even it felt unrealistic. As he came upon the designated coffee and cupcake shop, his heart thrummed in his chest at a speed unnatural for him at this time of morning. Even so, when he walked through the door and his gaze fell upon Mali sitting at a table, he smiled. He did miss her something terrible, after all. It was good just to see her. He went to her and she greeted him with a kiss which he returned as enthusiastically as the morning hour would let him, throwing in a hug to make up. "Missed you more," he grinned, settling into the chair across from Mali.
Mali looked nervous. Theo still felt it, too, his hands fidgeting together on the table. They made quite the twitchy pair. Theo looked up when she spoke, asking him to accompany her to Diagon Alley later. "Of course," he nodded. He'd go anywhere with her, even if he was nervous about being around a lot of other wizards (Mali was a genius, he realized, picking a place in the heart of Muggle London for them to meet). "I guess I'm going to need another one too." After house arrest, Theo had gotten kind of used to not using magic as much. But what was a wizard without a wand?
With a glance down, Theo noticed Mali's empty coffee cup at the same time the wonderful aroma of caffeinated beverages hit him full force. He smiled back up at her. "I'm going to get some tea. Want a cupcake?" Sweetness also sounded excellent this morning.

Although missing Theo was terrible, seeing him again after missing him was wonderful. The fluttering of butterflies in her middle was pleasant and the little flip floppy dance her heart did warmed her chest and made her feel light in the best way. He was so handsome in the mornings (or anytime, if you asked her) and there was a note of innocence and sweet simplicity in his sleepy face. It was genuine heart, nothing else. It was too early for anything else. This felt right, oh so right that she wondered why she ever thought space was a good idea.
"I doubt it." she told him while leaning into the hug. Maybe if they pressed close enough together they would never have to be apart again. Mali reveled in the feeling of security she got from being in his arms. It was precisely something she needed after what they'd both been through. Theo couldn't prevent what happened, but he tried to protect her and that's what mattered. He was always there for her when she needed him to be, which made her question silly. Of course he would go, she knew the answer before she even asked but the space planted a tiny seedling of doubt.
Mali abandoned her empty coffee cup to take Theo's hands in her own. Both of them, they were big and strong just like him. She loved every single inch of him but none more than his hands (his lips might be tied, followed closely by his eyes.). These hands put people back together again, healed up wounds and literally saved lives and she got to hold them, run her fingers over them, even kiss them. Which she did, a move she picked up from Theo on their very first date, Mali brought his hand up and placed the gentlest of kisses on his fingers. "Thank you, I knew you would." Mali tilted her chin up thoughtfully, considering the past couple of months. "I think it's going to feel weird to use it again. We really didn't have much of a chance to back into the swing of it after we got them back. I'll miss my old one, though. I liked it a lot." A hint of a smile played on her lips and she tried to hide it by pressing them together but it was futile as she gently teased "Maybe my next one will have a veela hair." Theo, with a veela hair core. It was cute in hindsight.
"Mm! I do actually, but I'll come with you." the wandless witch nodded, letting go of Theo's hands and standing up. Now that he was so close she couldn't let him wander far again. She tugged him up onto his feet and led him off to queue up behind the growing line of customers. Mali leaned into Theo, wrapping an arm around his middle as they stood. A pair of muggle nurses strolled past the shop window, wearing scrubs and Mali watched them with a hint of longing. "I want to go back to work. I miss it but I'm worried that my new wand---" Mali, who wasn't used to be around muggles after months of nothing but Eoin, Lupin and cats for company slapped a hand over her mouth the moment the word escaped her.

"Wanna bet? A kiss if I'm right, two if I'm wrong." He grinned cheekily down at Mali before settling across the table from her. The thought that Mali could have missed him more was indeed laughable to him. Theo was head over heels, absolutely madly in love with the woman. He didn't think it all had to do with their predicament, either. Surely what they went through together had some effect on their relationship - thankfully, a bonding effect rather than a separating one (not for long, at least) - but Theo was sure he would love her just the same if none of that had happened and they'd just lived their regular old lives together. Because he didn't love Mali just for what she did for him, getting him through all this and being by his side. He loved her for the person she was, kind and funny and strong and full of sweet, sly little things like stealing his moves and turning them right back around on him. Mali's hands were tiny over his but just as warm, and her kisses along his fingers absolutely melting. Theo leaned down and rested his chin on the table, looking up at Mali and running his thumbs across her palms. He nodded when he thanked her. Of course he would.
"It is gonna be weird," he agreed. "I think I'm actually used to doing everything the hard way now, I might get lazy." He grinned, watching a smile bloom on Mali's face and awaiting eagerly to hear what could draw such a smile. Teasing, of course, which only made his own grin wider. "Maybe. I hear they're saved for only the very best." Because if he could both compliment his girl and stroke his own ego at the same time, why not? "I'm kind of excited to see what we get. I feel like I've probably changed since my last one 'picked me'."
Aromas of coffee and cupcakes whirled their way over to the pair's table and Theo sat up, his nose dutifully following the scent. That's right - tea. He needed tea. His offer of a cupcake was met with something even better - Mali accompanying him to the line. As cheesy as it may have been, he wanted nothing more than to literally have her right by his side at this moment - and she snuggled in there quite nicely as they waited. Theo draped his arm across her shoulders, watching the same nurses Mali had her eye on. He looked down at her when she spoke, eyes widening a bit at her slip-up but she caught it beautifully. After a quick glance around for any nosy neighbors, Theo looked back down at her with a grin, holding a finger over his lips and winking. "I bet it's just like riding a bike," he said with just a bit of forced confidence. He couldn't say the same thoughts hadn't passed his own mind, but Theo didn't want to even fathom the thought of not being able to practice Healing anymore. He reached out to tuck stray strands of hair behind Mali's ear. "You're too good to have forgotten how to do it, no matter what tool you're using. It's all up there, just waiting." He tapped her noggin and graced her with a smile, moving them forward in line with a little push.

It felt so good to be happy again. Really and truly happy to be with Theo. She grinned so widely and brightly that she could feel it in her own cheeks. "Dunno." she joked as he settled across from her. "Those are awfully high stakes. I feel like you win either way." Really, she won either way. A kiss from Theo? She'd take that bet every time. Later, though. Right now she was enjoying this too much, sitting across from him with his hands all to herself. His thumbs against her palms sent a tingle down her spine and she laced her fingers through his. How long had it been since they held hands without a well meaning new friend lingering close by? Mister Lupin was wonderful to do what he did, but as unobtrusive as he tried to be having him around was a little daunting. Even in a full coffee shop, this felt more intimate and private than they had in months.
"You, lazy?" she asked, re-brightening her grin. "Never. I sort've like the satisfaction from doing things the muggle way. At least with my knitting." Maybe not so much with the not being able to summon. Not everyone was Theo's height and as she was not a creature known for her grace, climbing up on things to reach the high shelves often resulted in some sort of bruise or five. Mali disentangled their hands to reach over and ruffle Theo's hair, nodding along. "That must be true, only the most wonderful person I know has had one." She was sure she'd changed just in the past few months, not even accounting for all the changing since she got her first wand. It made her curious as well. "I feel like an aspen wand would suit you well. You're a bit hotheaded and..." she tilted her head, considering which word was appropriate. "Punchy."
Theo was wonderful, trying to reassure her when he sounded less than sure himself. It coaxed a reluctant smile back on her lips that broke into a full on grin and a laugh when he bopped her on the head. They moved up in line and Mali stood on the tips of her toes, straining to see the bakery case over the line of people in front of them. "You think they have any cupcakes that are as sweet as you?" Doubtful, that much sugar was bound to cause an instant cavity. When she was satisfied with her glance at the choices, Mali resettled into her spot under his arm, cuddled up against him. "I did learn how to do some things the..erm.. hard way. Did I tell you about how I tried to use stitches on Mister Lupin's wounds from--- when he--the dog... The thing he does every month."

Theo nodded, cheeky grin spread wide across his face. He did win either way, one kiss or two (though he, of course, would always prefer two). He supposed a little time each to themselves had been necessary after the ordeal they went through, but just from the past several minutes of being back in her presence, Theo knew the two of them couldn't be separate any longer. He could barely keep his hands off of her and the same could be said for Mali, reaching over to ruffle his hair even as she teased him. Honestly, the woman could say whatever she wanted as long as she had her hands in his hair - it was the one surefire way to make Theo melt. "Never," he mumbled in agreement, trying to blink away his adoring distraction so he could actually talk.
He only managed a nod, though, because along with a hair ruffle came a compliment and those were the sweetest when they came from Mali. He craved her attention and approval - maybe just for the mere fact that she could both acknowledge his flaws and still think him wonderful. Theo laughed, shrugging. "Fair enough. I've always been that way, though. Nothing's changed there." Not a lot, not at all, but Theo may have even tempered a bit with age. At any rate there was certainly less crying and screaming when he got...punchy.
On his feet, Theo was back on his game. Mali messed with his head in the most wonderful way but he could occasionally dole it right back out to her. "There's one right here," he grinned down at her, the sweetest cupcake, and squeezed her when she settled back against him. Never mind they were both being absolutely saccharine right now - it had been awhile, okay? They needed this. Theo continued to gaze down at Mali as she went into a story, smiling at both the adorable way she censored herself and her creative Healing practices. "Yeah? How did that go? I'm not a fan...I think my hands are too big. I bet your knowing how to knit helped, though."

They were an awfully cheesy pair, all lovesick grins and light teasing. They were both giving the cupcakes a run for their money in terms of sweetness but according to Theo, she took the cake although she had her doubts. It was hard to believe that anything or anyone could be sweeter then her handsome, punchy man troll. Even her. The line for tea and cupcakes moved slowly but they inched their way along. The wait was pleasant given the company. Their distance, when they chose it, had been good for them. She appreciated Theo and his little nuances even more, like the way he squeezed her close when she settled in under his arm. It was affectionate and helped her feel secure.
Mali reached up and ran her fingers over his cheek and along his jaw line. He even seemed genuinely interested in what she had to say as she started her story about Mister Lupin and his wounds. The witch took his hands as he spoke of them, turning them over in her own. "I think they're perfect." Maybe not for stitches, but they were perfect because he was perfect. "But no, knitting doesn't really help but sewing does." She had many crafty talents. Knitting and sewing were only two of them. "It's not really stitching when you knit, more like looping. It didn't go very well." He didn't die, though, so it could've definitely have gone worse than it did. In the end they managed to scrape him together, patch him up and send him on his way. "I forgot that you need silver and dittany for...." Unsure of how to describe it without giving too much away to any muggle eavesdropper she chewed on her lower lip for a brief, thoughtful moment "His condition... and he kept bleeding through." Mali looked up at Theo. She thought the world of him but the thing she liked most, the thing that drew her in was his ability as a healer and the compassion that hid between all his punchy layers. "You wouldn't have forgotten that. I kept wishing you were there because I didn't know what to do."
The line moved up and Mali pulled them forward this time. "But it worked out. I was gonna.. pop down to the apothecary." Muggles had those, didn't they? "But Eoin came home and was able to go get it. I think they'll be good friends. I think we'll all be. I like him." While she was declaring her affection for everyone, Mali tilted her head up to place a kiss on the highest part of Theo that she could reach from the tip of her toes, his chin. "And I love you." When it was finally their turn, Mali selected a cupcake decorated and flavored with orange zest along with a cup of milk. When the pair re-settled at their table she took a bite before offering the pastry out to Theo, a smudge of frosting on the tip of her nose. "Want some?"

While Theo was schooled on the differences between knitting and sewing, his mind was completely somewhere else, too easily distracted by Mali's closeness and the way she was playing with his hands (it was like that anytime she touched him, really, but most of the time he at least tried to pay attention). His perfect little hands - that got him grinning. His brain did come back into the conversation as more healing talk was brought up, because he was very surprised to hear what Mali said. He'd never really thought of it before, that werewolf blood would have the same effect on Muggle remedies as it would magical ones that didn't involve the power duo of silver dittany. "Really? It came right through? Huh." He looked down at her and raised an eyebrow, for not more than a second before he was grinning again. She was really going strong today with the compliments and Theo was eating it all right up. "It sounds like you knew exactly what to do. You needed to fix him." Theo didn't have enough fingers and toes to count all the times he'd tried something completely useless before getting to an effective treatment. They all did that in their field, he figured.
And this story did turn out eventually, just like they usually did. Eoin showed up with the assist, nothing wrong with getting a little help, and they got their patient all patched up. "He's a good guy. They both are," Theo nodded in agreement, and then he got a kiss. He was ready to return the favor but the pair was finally at the counter and he couldn't make the poor cashier's day any worse with his PDA, so he went with, "I love you, too," to Mali, and ordered a cup of tea.
When they were back at their table, Theo set to prepping his tea just the way he liked it. When he looked back up, Mali had frosting on her nose and was offering him some cupcake. He grinned yet again, leaning over to take a bite from the cupcake and wipe the frosting from her nose simultaneously - quite the multi-tasker, he was. "Thanks."
